“Hey, you gotta try some of this tres leches cake. It’s hella good!”
“No thanks.”
“Seriously? The last time you turned down desert was, like, never. Come on, have a bite.”
“No, I don’t want any. I’m not into goat milk.”
“What?”
“I’m not into goat milk.”
“Uh…I don’t think there’s goat milk in it.”
“Really? Isn’t it one of the three milks? — cow milk, goat milk…”
“Dude, really? They mean regular milk, evaporated milk, condensed milk — get it?”
“Ohhhhh…”
So went one of the many odd conversations I’ve had with my good guy friend N. Black. Playing with Dior’s new Five Golds quint today reminded me of that conversation. What would N. Black have thought if it had been five milk cake instead of three??
The $58 quint also goes by the more marketable stage name, the Dior 5-Colour Eyeshadow Palette in Five Golds #001, and it’s one of two new Dior eyeshadow quints for holiday 2010.
The five metallic shadows aren’t as pigmented as usual for Dior, but they certainly do shimmer!
Based on the colors, I’m not entirely sure why Dior chose to call the palette Five Golds. Two of the shades (the silvery one, and the one on the far left in the swatch pic below) don’t have any (or very little) gold in them at all.
But I forgive ’em. After all, everyone loves gold.
Gold like…
- The Solid Gold dancers
- Black gold/Texas tea
- Tri-color gold jewelry
- Goldfinger (and Golden Eye)
- Golden Tickets
These textures are classically Dior (they blend like buttah!), and despite requiring multiple layers to get these colors to come through, they don’t cake or look heavy on the skin.
I don’t mind the limited pigment, but if you and pigmented shadows are as inseparable as The Situation from his tan, you might want to apply these Five Golds with a wet brush head (or do some serious layering with liners or cream shadows).
Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: B/B+
Oh, gawd, this is pricey ($58)! And where’s the pigment? I still like it, though, because the textures are so easy to blend. If you have room in your makeup bag for five easy-to-use metallic shadows, this quint could be worth the splurge. Available at Dior counters and Sephora stores (haven’t found it online yet).

Pretty! 🙂 Karen, I have been meaning to ask you – have you seen the Pink Golds clutch palette yet? I found a couple of brief reviews, but no swatches yet…
Marie says
What are you using on your lashes/lips? You look pretty!
Jess says
Gorgeous!! Love Dior 🙂
Ariel says
wow, if that palette wasn’t $58, i would totally buy it. love the colors for the holidays more than any other palette i’ve seen yet this season.
Tasha says
Hey you know what.. you are asian version of Carrie Underwood. I hope you don’t mind me saying this… really!!!
Rachael says
In the pan, the silver looks more like my bathroom and kitchen drawer handles, but more silver on skin. I like that brushed and slightly tarnished color.
makeup morsels says
ooh cute FOTD, I love your dangly earrings. hahah hmm I’m a bit confused about the name as well. I don’t understand why Dior won’t release any all-matte quints anymore, they did such nice ones before.
BeckBeck says
Agreed! I have this issue with Dior and Chanel – gorgeous eyeshadows to look at, but wayyyy too much bling for my admittedly average lifestyle.
steph b says
I’m with you two. I could handle sheen for everyday, but why do they all have to be full on frost and glitter?
makeup morsels says
I have no problem w/ shimmer, but Dior did the best matte eyeshadows I have ever used in my life, which is why I have no idea why they would ever discontinue them.
Trisha says
You look lovely! And the eye look goes really well with your hair. Glam city, over there.
Tina says
Karen you look STUNNING!! New hairdo? Love the earrings!
Agnes says
o.m.g. that looks so pretty in the pan!! i sooo wish it had more pigmentation though.. i mean, for $58, i expect it to be “BAM” hahaha. but then again, it looks amazing in your eye shots… i can safely assume that skills in applying the eyeshadow is a huge factor!! i loved your look 😀
gio says
I could never bring myself to spent so much for eyeshadows that aren’t very pigmented but the colors look beautiful on you!
Lee says
Hey Karen and beauties 🙂
I really really really like this quad…infact, i want it lol
The colours look awesome on u 🙂
Dunno y but i wouldnt have thought the silver and the black-ish colour would go with the bronze/golds, i usually just put the darkest bronze i have with those sorts but i have 2 say they look cool 2gether 🙂
I might try and copy the look with the closest match shades i have till i can afford the quad lol!
Lee says
U know what, i just thought of something cool…usually when i do a smokey eye with a silver and charcoal shade i look a bit, i dunno, washed out in the eyes, but im thinking with the bronzey colour as the base it will fix that!
steph b says
Me too. I usually add a bit of plum to breathe some life into it, but it definitely changes the feel of it. This could really work for a daytime smokey (with less frosty shadows). I’m going to go try it now.
Kajal Couture says
I’m not impressed by the quad, but I am impressed by the look you did with it! Very appropriate for the holiday season…
Tiffany says
You look great! I feel like I could dupe this with some of my MAC shades. I would love to see a quick rundown of how you places the different shades so I could try to copy 🙂
Felicia says
You look gorgeus! Really like the look 🙂
Nina says
Oh thats such a pretty look — I <3 it a lot!
Paris B says
Hello? I thought it looked too warm but on 2nd thoughts, it doesn’t. Crikey I might need to take a look at this one! I love how you used more of the greys and you look great!
sarahc says
Gorgeous!, and LOL at your conversation with your friend. I have a friend like that. He’s a little slow on the uptake. 🙂
Hannah says
It’s a shame that the pigmentation is so meh, because those colors look gorgeous on you! You look radiant.
Becca says
This is a gorgeous look on you…I’d lem it myself but I have yet to give any of my Dior quints the love they deserve…so sad…lol.
Marian says
That looks beautiful on you! You look very sophisticated. I want to run right out and buy that palette after seeing it on you!
Resham says
Personally I had very high hopes wth this one. I think the name GOLD misled me. I just assumed it wud be different!!!

Glosslizard says
Not my first choice in quints (yah, I like the pigment), but you certainly do look smashing in those pics!
Karen says
Thanks! Seriously, it’s the bangs. They make life about 100000% better, LOL!
How’s your Thursday going? BTW, am about to send you an e-mail…
Andreea says
Mmmmh, they will look good on a fair skin, rather basic colours and all so lovely! But you can pull some more COLOUR off – what about the Shisedo colours, I would love to see them on you (the crazy one with pink, yellow and green).
Andreea says
BTW: Any quint is worth the splurge if you do not have any 🙂 *lol*
I counted my palettes (CHANEL and ARMANI, not the cheapest!) and I have 6 for my daily routine to choose from. Weird. Of course I will never finish them… and I keep buying.
Isabelle says
Hi! This is my first comment and I must say, I reference your blog every time I go to purchase make-up. I love this new quint and can’t wait to pick it up when it becomes available! This is totally off topic but I bought Dior’s Sunset Cafe quint about a year ago and have honestly used it once or twice, primarily because I do not know how to put it together. Is there any way you could take a picture of the Sunset Cafe colors on your eyes? We both share the same hair and skin color so I’d like to see it in action! Thank you!
Elle says
I LOVE your reviews and photos. Without seeing how you use the colors together, I would only buy the Endless Shine quint as I honestly don’t know what to do with all the colors for the Five Gold quint 🙂 I have about 7 of Dior palette (still not sure what to do with the Green Design quint) and bought most of them because they look so pretty. Oh, I was told by one of the Dior makeup artist at Saks black gold, platinum/white gold are the 2 odd one in the Five Gold quint. Doesn’t make sense in the pans but on my skin, it fit the description (^_^)
Thank you for the fabulous photo Karen.
Karen says
You’re welcome, Elle! It’s always nice to meet another Dior Quint fan.
Which of your Dior palettes is your fave?
Elle says
Karen, thank you for letting me participate…and a good laugh as well. I was falling off the chair laughing at your blog/review, totally get your humor, made my day 🙂 I haven’t get around to use the Endless Shine quint yet and waiting for the Five Gold from Sephora.com (thanks heaven for the FF2010 promo code :P). However, my very favorite of all Dior quint still has to be Petal Shine. It’s so easy to use because doesn’t matter what color I use or all at once, always come out so pretty like I’m actually know what’s I’m doing. lol. I also like to use the darkest color as eyeliner with a wet brush 🙂 Which is your favorite? Do you have any thought for the green design quint? I usually shy away from green altogether but somehow, that quint speak to me.
Have a wonderful weekend Karen.
Karen says
Hi Elle,
Petal Shine is a fab quad. I have many girlfriends who are way addicted to it! 🙂 My fave is a toss up between Golds 569 from Goldrush (it’s like my Petal Shine equivalent… basically I can throw any of the colors in the dark and be okay in the end, LOL) and Electric Lights from Cristal Collection.
For green design you can do something like this look:
https://www.makeupandbeautyblog.com/product-reviews/product-reviews-makeup-chanel-garden-party-quad-and-makeover-with-national-artist-john-fussell/
This was done with Chanel shadows but I think you could sub the medium and light green shades from Green Design. Just add your fave pink and/or peach for the brow bone and you’ll be good to go!
So, do you have any exciting plans for Halloween?
Elle says
Karen, how was your Halloween? Did you have any special makeup done cuz I would love to see it 🙂 I was working the whole entire weekend up till now, sorry for the late reply!
OMG, that Golds 569 is beautiful. I’ve never seen it in person though, how would you compare the Five Gold this season with those gold quints in the past? I have to say, they all look good on you because your skin tone is so versatile or maybe it’s the skills because I tried both Five Gold and Endless Shine on me today and they just look blah. I’m using Dior Nude Sand 031 shade foundation and Make Up For Ever HD 123 shade so I thought I could pull it off learning how you layer the colors but I guess I have much to learn 🙁 If you don’t mind me asking, what did you have on the day you took the photo, foundation/powder I mean.
Oh, and thank you for the link, extremely helpful for newbie that play around with colors for sure. LOL. I can report back that the Green Design is my new favorite. I have light brown eyes but look too dark in most light and with green shadows done right, I now have hazel eyes…hehehe. Thank you Karen.
Karen says
Hi Elle,
Aw, bummer you had to work! Was work good at least? What do you do?
I did end up doing a look — a bright green eye with a hot pink lip. El Hub and went to a party on the USS Hornet. Kinda random, but fun! Here are some pics:
https://www.makeupandbeautyblog.com/just-for-fun/the-weekly-roundup-posts-you-might-have-missed-23/
Anywho, Five Golds is a little different in that it’s more glittery than some of the straight up shimmer quints like Gold 569. Hang in their with your blending! Keep practicing, maybe take some pictures of your face (you can totally use a camera phone) so you can critique your work, and keep at it. I’ve been really into eyeshadow for about four years and I still feel like I have a lot to learn. 🙂
Regarding the foundation/powder I used in this pic, that’s Laura Mercier Oil-Free Foundation with a 50/50 combo of MAC Blot Powder with MAC Prep+Prime Powder. This trio photographs really well.
Lemme know if you have any other questions! I’m always happy to help.
Ariel says
Karen, I think this is my favorite look of yours so far this season! I love what you created with the colors. I remembered it as I was in Sephora today and picked up the palette with my F&F coupon. I don’t mind all the glitter in it because for some reason there was less fallout for me than with UD eyeshadows.
Karen says
Hi Ariel,
So glad to hear you picked this baby up. When you do a look send me a pic! 🙂
And that fact that you got it on sale makes it all the more better.
