Clarins Wonder Mint Mascara: Rise of the Teal Terror

Published in: Makeup, Product Reviews

Here’s how you know you have a problem with makeup: when you get home really late, exhausted and ready to pass out, and the first thing you want to do is play with your new teal mascara. Yup, I finally got my multi-colored mitts on a tube of Clarins Wonder Mint Waterproof mascara ($23.50). You remember — I first spotted it at the mall a couple nights ago but came home empty handed because it was out of stock.

As luck would have it, my local Nordstrom DID have it in stock, and I brought it home with me yesterday. As tired as I was after work, blogging, shopping and dinner last night (I got home around midnight), I found the strength to hold that mascara wand steady enough to apply two coats.

That’s when the magic happened.

My lashes haven’t partaken of a color this bright since, well, ever. I thought I’d have to layer Wonder Mint on top of a black mascara to get the color to pop, but that was so not the case. Too bad it’s a limited edition! If Nordies still has it in stock when I head back to the store tomorrow, I am definitely going to pick up a spare.

This morning, after getting some sleep, I reached for Wonder Mint again and applied two coats. This time around I noticed a few things I missed last night: Wonder Mint fails as a lash thickener, but it does provide great length and separation, fanning the lashes up and outward while maintaining the curl.

I thought green lashes might look too crazy for work, so I skipped eyeshadow and liner to tone it down a notch. All day today I waited for someone to comment on my green lashes, but not so much as a peep! — nothing, nada, zip. I’m guessing Wonder Mint looks a lot bolder up close than it does from afar.

When I got home from work a few hours ago I applied a third coat, and that’s the one that took it from subtle-and-appropriate-for-work to you’re-totally-fired-you-crazy-green-lashed-lady. Stepping back several feet from the mirror, there was no missing the teal. I gotta admit, I liked the bolder color, but I’ll reserve the third coat for nights out dancing.

The fine folks at Clarins must have had clubbing in mind when they concocted this stuff because it’s also waterproof. It should hold up nicely when I get my sweat on at the club. This afternoon, in a completely non-scientifc test of Wonder Mint’s waterproof-ness, I spritzed MAC Charged Water all over my face and then danced around my living room to Missy Elliot’s Supa Dupa Fly CD (soooo good!). After the song, I checked myself in the mirror. There was a tiny bit of smudging under my eyes but no green streaks running down my face. Hallelujar!

Wonder Mint is part of Clarins’ limited edition Summer Fever collection, which is surprisingly filled with really pretty makeup. Mistakenly, I always thought of Clarins as a strictly skin care brand, but now I’m looking forward to checking out more of their summer line. I’m most excited about the brightly colored Waterproof Eye Pencils (in Violet, Turquoise, Bronze and Black) and the Sun Lip Balm.

Looks so pretty on you! It brings me back to the days of the maybelline color mascaras from jr high! Am I alone here? I think they came in a light blue or light purple tube…

Anywho the collection looks pretty fun..I LOVE SUMMER!

Have you ever used Maui babe? I got it back in maui on our honeymoon and have been ordering it ever since! It rocks the hiz-ouse!!!

  2. Meaghan says:

Wow that rocks! Love it! I read somewhere that a little blue mascara on the tips of your lashes makes your eyes look whiter and I think this totally holds true for mint also! Love it! Might just have to pick me up one of those little wonder tubes 🙂

Karen have you ever used any Urban Decay products? They have a new foundation out there that I am thinking I may need to pick up (I love the UDPP and it comes with matching packaging- I’m such a sucker for cute packaging!!!!)

This sounds really cool! I love the way it looks on you! I bet it would look gorgeous with purple shadow!!

You should post a pic of you from a distance, so we can see what it looks like from afar.

    Hi KK,

I wasn’t allowed to wear makeup when I was in Jr. High, but I vaguely recall those colored mascaras. I guess I’m making up for lost time, LOL.

I love summer, too. The bright colors, the fun clothes, the weather, everything. 🙂

Maui Babe! For some reason I ended up with a wee sample bottle years ago but never ended up trying it. I tan pretty easily so I don’t have to use tanners. I do remember it smelling really good, though. Does it work well for you?

  7. Karen says:

    Hi Meaghan,

That’s an interesting tip! I suppose that’s because of the contrast between the two colors. I guess when my allergies really kick in I’ll have to wear this stuff 24-7, because my eyes get all red and watery, LOL.

  8. Karen says:

    Hi Paris B.,

You can’t deny the teal terror’s siren call. I am a black mascara person, too, but this tube o’ teal melted my heart.

I hope you can find it! *crosses fingers*

  9. Karen says:

    Hi Meaghan,

It’s been years since I’ve used their products. I used UDPP for a few years but after my tube ran out I moved on to other things. What items from the line do you like?

  10. Karen says:

    Hi Mariah,

Okay! I will wear it for an FOTD in the next few days. I didn’t think to wear it with purple, so thanks for the idea. 🙂 Are you thinking a jewel-toned purple or a lighter violet?

  11. Megan says:

Girl that’s cute…I need to bust out the blue mascara I bought (max factor) but I’ve been thinking the same thing all week…that blue lashes are not office appropriate…not that my makeup has never verged on office insppropriate. My boss is male and sometimes he just looks at me…and keeps going. He’s not fashion conscious in any way…so I don’t think he cares…but sometimes I think he thinks I’m weird…but that’s okay because he and his pre-schoolers are pretty weird too. 😉 Hmmm I might have to bust out the bloue tomorrow. We’ll see… okay I need to get to bed…the BBQ was so much fun today 🙂

  12. Aleks says:

Yay, you got it and it looks hot! Would be cool to see a FOTD of you wearing it! 😉

Girl, I got the job! :D:D:D I had never been more nervous than right before the interview. I had even prepared myself for all the questions (thanks for the tips, really helped me to get ready) they might be asking, but the woman just asked me if I had any experience of customer service and wanted to see me wrapping a gift *LOL*. So, from today to Sunday, I’ll be wrapping gifts there. It was less than thirty minutes and I got a job. Ahmazing. I suppose the next job interview will be a *tad* bit more demanding, haha.

Sorry to hear you’ve been suffering from lack of sleep. Being sleep-deprived is NO fun. But just like you said, it’s Friday soon. 🙂 In my case there’s still two more days at work (feels funny to say I’m working), but I’m excited.

Oh hey what did you get from the Naughty Nauticals? I’ve got Ensign and Bateaux Lustreglasses and love ’em both. On Tuesday I was in Helsinki and asked help from a MAC MUA and she chose neutral eyeshadows for me: Era and Sable. I would’ve never had thought of getting those, but I’m glad I asked!

Talk to you later & take care!

Oooooh, I’m likin’ that violet eye pencil! I totally agree that Wonder Mint would look amazing on lash tips over black mascara!

Whoa, today was exhausting! Good though, and I just got back from a serious aikido workout! Woo-hoo! The virtual beach party was good too! 😉 Only two more days ’til the weekend!

  14. Karen B says:

That colour looks great! 🙂 I can so see you jumping up and down in your living room. Hehe

  18. Miss QQ says:

    Hi Karen

It looks cute and really makes your eye looks wider. So far I only put on black and brown mascara. Maybe I’ll try a coloured one for a party.

Anyway, I’m getting the chip of tooth aka “foreign body” embedded in my gums out tomorrow. My dentist looks cute and hopefully that will give me some comfort. Of course, thanks for your support too!

  19. Amanda says:

yay, you found one! fun times. I love a good colored mascara. in addition the the navy ones I keep talking about I’m eyeing the new colored urban decays….they have a burgdany that I’m drawn too, but think that might be more fall-ish.

  20. Dao says:

Wow, pretty! The one and only time I used color mascara was the time I had a purple tube. But it was no where as bright as yours. Totally summer indeed!

  21. The Clarin’s counter is right opposite my counter at work so im constantly there testing their skincare, makeup etc. OMG, that teal mascara is to die for and so r their pencils…u need to check their summer collection out. its stunning, i totally snagged the teal mascara for myself!!! 😀

  22. Baby Girl says:

I love the color, but I’m not going to buy it. I have to stick with the blackest black when it comes to mascara. I remember buying purple and royal blue in the 80’s. I can’t go back there.

  23. Karen says:

    Hi Aleks,

YAY! I am so happy for you! Are you enjoying the work so far? I know it’s going to be over soon but if it’s pleasant to be there maybe they’ll offer you a full time job in the future. You never know.

LOL, I was actually worked as a gift wrapper too when I was in high school. I remember it being very fun.

  24. Karen says:

    Hi Glosslizard,

I haven’t tried the teal on the tips yet but it is on the menu; hopefully for this weekend.

  25. Karen says:

    Hi Karen B.,

You know I did that, too! Gotta dance like nobody’s watching, LOL. Actually, I really hope my neighbor’s don’t see me, because I look pretty ridiculous. 🙂

  26. Karen says:

    Hi Kay-Tee,

Don’t worry about it, girl! I know that being a student is time consuming so no worries. I haven’t read “The Clique” series but I saw it in the book store the other day. I just picked up the new Stephanie Meyer book (she wrote Twilight, New Moon and Eclipse). I will put The Clique on my list of things to read. Do you have a favorite in the series?

  27. Karen says:

    Hi Lena,

I hope you find it on the Bay! Good luck!

  28. Karen says:

    Hi Caitlyn,

Hmm, what’s lipgloss your budget, girl? I think MAC Lipglasses are pretty affordable, but some don’t like the stickiness factor. Tell me what you like in a lipgloss and I’ll see what I can dig up for you.

  29. Karen says:

    Hi Miss QQ,

A colored mascara would be great for a party! I hope you try the teal. 🙂

BTW, I’m glad you got that chip out. Having the cute dentist helped, I’m sure.

  30. Karen says:

    Hi Amanda,

Navy is next up on the list. 🙂 I bet burgundy would be really pretty… it would have to be big, bold, burgundy though! I have a thing about Urban Decay but will look at those mascaras just because I keep hearing about them.

  31. Karen says:

    Hi Dao,

Purple is another color on the mascara list. 🙂

  32. Karen says:

    Hi Iheartmakeup!

I am going to go back and snag a pencil or too. The purple one looks really pretty. Have you worn your teal mascara yet?

  33. Karen says:

    Hi Baby Girl,

Ahhh, the 80s. I never got to wear those colors because I was too young. I think I’m making up for lost time.

  34. elle andes says:

I just purchased this product in replace of Sephora’s teal mascara. The problem with Sephora’s teal mascara was the lack of product. There was hardly any product in the tube! I was highly upset. So I came across an article in Elle Magazine raving about Clarin’s Wonder Mind mascara so I decided to give it a try.

Have you tried any of Vincent Longo’s colored mascara?

  35. Ann says:

Hello! I bought this mascara as well. It’s beautiful. But can you give me an advice how do you remove it?? All my makeup-removers ( for waterprooof) don’t remove all makeup ((
