Silicone-free drugstore conditioners are like pop stars who write their own songs — few and far between.
That’s why my eyes lit up when I read the ingredients on this bottle of Garnier Fructis Body Boost Conditioner ($5 for 25 oz.) at Tar-ghay.
I’ve been searching for a new product to condition wash my hair with, and I wanted something silicon free (for an explanation of condition washing from an old 2007 MBB post).
Why no silicone?
Because I’ve been hearing good things about silicone-free condition washing. From a hair performance point of view, silicones are said to add smoothness, slip and shine (from my experience, I agree), but many women refuse to use them, believing that they build up and weigh hair down over time.
Condition washing with Garnier Fructis Body Boost
Silicone or no silicone, I think Body Boost rocks.
For starters, there’s the easily digestible (read: faint) green apple scent, so crisp and clean that I can’t get enough of it!
The light texture and weight of the product make it feel good in my hair. It’s light, but still moisturizing, and rinses fast, not leaving behind a greasy or heavy layer of goo.
I’ve only used it to condition wash, but I don’t see why it wouldn’t also work well to add volume and moisture to fine hair without adding excess weight.
On top of it all, the huge 25-fl oz bottle costs just five buckaroos! I mean, it costs more to cross the frickin’ Golden Gate Bridge (that’s $6). Good deals are hard to come by these days, and I love finding cheap stuff that really works. 🙂Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: A+

What a neat idea! I don’t wash my hair everyday because its too drying, but I had never thought about condition washing. I might have to try that one of these days.

Hi H.,
They do have some cool things. Have you ever used their spray gel? I like it a lot.

Awesome! I love that you’re talking about conditioner only wash (CO wash) I’ve been doing it for quite a while and it’s improved the condition of my hair soooooo much. If anyone wants to learn more about CO washing, head on over to the forums at the Long Hair Community…. that place is a WEALTH of haircare information!

Hi Caty,
I’ve been on there a few times and found a lot of helpful tips. Naturally Curly is also great too!

This sounds fab. I’m tempted to try it even though I’m not too keen on the green apple scent in haircare products.

Hi Gio,
The scent is very subtle — it’s like a *hint* of green apple.

I don’t mind a bit of silicone in my products as a little bit goes a long way. BTW have you seen La Coupe hair care products in the US? It is a Canadian drug store brand and it is excellent. I love using the La Coupe Shine and Smooth shampoo and conditioner because it makes my hair so silky and shiny. And it is silicone free too. The shampoos and conditioners cost less than $10.00 CAD. It is worth checking out if you spot it.

Hi Amy,
I’ve never heard of that brand, but it sounds like I’d dig it. Hmm, I’ll have to go searching…
How was your Friday? Doing anything fun this weekend?

I’d really like to get back into Garnier but I have too many other shampoos to finish up. I don’t even know where they came from or how I got them! When I was younger I’d use my sister’s Garnier shampoo & loved the apple/citrus smell. I’m sick of Pantene – I need change!

I am back home. It feels weird though and my mum’s not used to my being around a lot anymore and I’m not used to being around anymore. We’re both rather strong personalities and we clash quite often… lol
Also because I’ve been working fulltime for three weeks now and the kids are wearing me out. Not to mention the inflammatioin of my vocal chords which make me really pissy…
I could use some glitter polish but I don’t have money. Meh.

Sounds like a great conditioner. I use Matrix from hair salons because I have really long, veryyyyy thick hair. I have to wash it every day because I like to style it different each day. Whether it’s straightened, curled, wavy or natural & just thrown up, it needs to be washed each day.. But I only shampoo every 2 – 3 days. It gets conditioned every day, though, because it’d be a huge, tangly lion mane if it weren’t. It’s always nice to have backup that is easy on the wallet for between bottles (very expensive & I’m just not ballin’ right now, Ha!)

Hey!
I was just wondering, with Garnier Fructis there are different kinds–Sleek and Shine, the Boost one which you have, and I think one for frizzy hair. I was just curious on your take for how all of these affect one’s hair? Like, sleek and shine makes it more sleek. But, what does boost do exactly?
Thanks!
