There was a time when I felt that mascaras in colors other than black were incredibly depressing. Having naturally black lashes, I felt that attempting to overpower their natural pigment with anything other than black seemed like (yawn) a waste o’ precious time. I mean, there are only so many hours in the day in which one can work on important projects like tracking down new shirtless pictures of RyGos.
Ya feel me?
That changed when I discovered fun fringe pigments like blue and plum and their ability to create eye-catching effects on different colored irises.
Plums often look amazing with blue, hazel, brown, green and gray eyes, and blues deepen and enrich brown, green and hazel eyes, among other eye colors.
It was a little weird at first seeing my lashes coated in Chanel’s latest adventure into the world o’ colorful mascaras, Le Volume de Chanel in Khaki Bronze ($30). Much as I love Le Volume (my favorite high-end mascara when it comes to dramatic lift, curl and thickness), I didn’t fall for Khaki Bronze immediately because it lightens the look of my lashes a shade or two, an effect that grew on me over time.
I was on the fence about it the first couple of tries, but I changed my tune when I saw how it looked in pics.
The name describes it perfectly — Khaki Bronze.
If you wear warm bronze, gold or dark khaki shadows often, I think you’ll want to treat your lashes to Khaki Bronze. It creates beautiful music with each of those shadow shades, bringing out their various tones and nuances. I’m wearing it here with the dark golden khaki color in the new Chanel Mystere quad as a liner and with bronze and gold shadows on my lids (MAC Bronze and Woodwinked), and I think they complement each other perfectly.
The Le Volume mascaras are all about drama, so if you like your mascaras quiet (shh…), then you may want to unload much of the product from the brush before applying.
Me, I lurves me some Beyonce/Mariah/Diva-licious lashes, so I go full-on, all-out with two, or sometimes three (or four!) coats.
I exercised a little restraint for these pics… For these I’m only wearing two. 🙂
If you’re a minimalist, I wouldn’t say it’s a must-have, but if you’re a mascara hoarder like me and like to play around with eye colors, Khaki Bronze would be a solid addition to your makeup collection.

It’s totally Tuesday, babe!
Let’s do this!! Whoa — I think the coffee’s kicking in.
Thank goodness, too, because Tabs unkindly woke me up a half an hour before my alarm clock was supposed to sound, and I feel like I’ve been up since the crack of dawn…
Having a fluffy, purring 20-pound ball on your chest isn’t a terrible way to wake up, but seriously, I gotta teach that cat how to read time.
Do your cats/pups/pets wake you up in the morning? Tired minds want to know.
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

Looks good on you, Karen! I only have four mascaras of which I use two.

I think this mascara gives a nice subtle look to the lashes!
Missy doesn’t wake me up too often, but she has definite ideas about how long it’s appropriate for me to be in the bathroom getting ready in the morning. If I go over her preferred time, she will first sit in the bathroom doorway and glare at me, then start meowing, then scratch the bedroom carpet a few times, and finally, if all else fails, will jump against my back as I’m facing the sink and mirror. That last part gets REAL special when I’m in the middle of wielding a mascara wand!

I really like this mascara color! It’s subtle, but still really unique.

I think it’s nice on you but you know what a drag queen lash fan I am. The blacker, the better, for me. 🙂
I get very cranky if I don’t get enough sleep so all of our kitties learned long ago that pawing at our door won’t get them anywhere. If we left the door open, though, they would definitely be waking us up at the crack of dawn!

Love chanel mascara… best high end mascara hands down!
And yes… my Chihuahua jumps on my stomach and slaps my face with her very tiny yet effective paw to wake me up! It’s ALWAYS before my alarm!

Gorgeous mascara!
Well.. one of my three cats usually wakes me up.. you know.. meowing. In my ears. Nice and LOUD. 🙂

Hey KarBear! I need some help. I am on the hunt for a gold shadow. I have so many but they all look a little bronze or copper and I want something that looks like a true gold on my NW20 skin.
Thanks,
Dana

OOOOOOhhhhhhhh….I lurve that mascara on you! Our eye colors are the same and it does make me want to try it. As for being woken up by furry children? Yes Ma’am; on a regular basis. We have 2 little Boston Terrier (terrors?) girls and each morning they somehow give the ‘signal’ to each other, and simultaneously explode out from under the covers and give face kisses until you awake. Not a bad way to wake up at all!

You wear this well Karen! I personally love blackest black for my lashes especially since I have dark almost black hair.

I can’t really tell it’s khaki once it’s on, but the other two “colored” versions of Le Volume I’ve tried are rather toned-down too, so I think that’s the point! I bet it’ll work well for many eyeshadows in my stash.
Tango meows me up very, very often as well. He really needs to lose some weight, so I’m trying not to leave him extra food at night. However, that pretty much dictates my sleep will be interrupted. It’s hard not to give in when he wakes me up at 5AM!

Two coats? Omg I use probably 4 or 5, with little wiggly swipes in between. Oh the life of having blonde lashes….

OMG. I’m reminded of DiorShow Mitzah, which I went through two tubes of. The color would be perfect for my blue eyes and pale lashes.
I’m looking for a mascara for my wedding day, and Le Volume would definitely fit the bill if I can reassure myself that I won’t cry…

I’ve been loving your eye looks! So pretty!!

Karen, reading your blog always cheers me up!!!

I too really love this new khaki le volume mascara. I usually use dark brown, blue or plum Dior iconic mascara with the primer coat. As I am blonde with fair skin and greenish hazel eyes. This color provides accent to my lashes but softens the look especially for day. It has a dark greenish brown color that works really well for fair / light complexion. No need for primer, stays on all day smudge proof and pretty easy to remove. Love it but bought 2 as it is a limited edition color and as such will be sold out soon.
