After my out-of-body glitter experience with Lippmann’s Happy Birthday polish last week, I thought I’d go cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs when I spotted the sparkly bottles in their 10th Anniversary Celebrate Set ($35, limited edition).
If you really think about glitter — and I mean REALLY think about glitter (LOL!) — there are different kinds, right? From the Celebrate Set, I’d expected shiny happy glitter, but it surprised me with darker, less shimmery shades.
The color 411…
Ruby Slippers: For this shade, Lippmann jammed bits of red glitter into a black jelly base. The glitter bits vary in size, and the resulting polish, a semi-opaque black with a medium-shine finish, strikes me as something that would go well with sexy Halloween costumes, perhaps a nurse or traffic cop. 🙂 It’s not something I’d wear every day, but it earns points for originality. Funky Chunky: I just could not get this color to look pretty… It’s a shiny black with black hexagon-shaped glitter, which, in theory, could be very cool, right? Nope, not for me. While it has potential, it looked bumpy and messy, like fresh tar. That, and the glitter hardly even sparkles, BOO! Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: C-
Superstar: This polish packs small bronze glitter bits in a brown jelly base. I’ve liked the color ever since I saw it in last year’s Holiday 2008 collection. I still think it’s fun and totally appropriate for fall. Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: B

Overall, I think the colors in the Celebrate Set fit for an occasion like Halloween, but I think I’m leaning more toward Happy Birthday.
If you like somewhat dark, moody nail polishes with a bit o’ bling, then the set might be worth your while. Individually, Lippmann’s polishes usually cost $16 per bottle, so $35 for the set of three full-size bottles isn’t bad.
What do you think about these? Is the glitter workin’ for ya?
Goin’ places!
Here’s a random question for you: When you go to sleep at night, where do you keep your purse?
Before I turn in, I place my purse right beside me on my nightstand. Don’t laugh, but I actually have a legit reason!
El Hub teases me about it, but I’m figuring that if there’s an earthquake/fire, then I’ll be ready to just grab my purse (maybe using it to carry Tabs) and go.
It’s about being prepared. 🙂
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

Ooh, I like Ruby Slippers. The others, not so much.
All my (various, how did that happen?) bags hang out around the dining table. Sometimes there’s no place to sit. I don’t know why, but I have two bags for school, one for work, and one for going out. So I always have to scramble to make sure I have my keys, wallet, and phone. Efficiency and organization are definitely not my fortes.
P.S. Tabs is so cute! He’s very photogenic.
Karen says
Hi Jen,
Ruby Slippers is fun. I think I’m gonna rock it for Halloween. 🙂
LOL, that’s cute that your bags guard the dining table. I hear you about having stuff in various purses — sometimes I find lipgloss in a purse that I haven’t used in months!

I love Tabs. He is so handsome. I think we should get Jade (my cat) and Tabs together. Then they can make pretty tabby babies. Have I said this before?
I keep my purse on the kitchen counter. If I had to run out of the house for some reason, I would be in trouble. All my important stuff is scattered on the dining room table, kitchen counter and in various pockets. Eeep.
Karen says
Hi Lana,
Oh, that would be so lovely! I would love a few Tabs Jrs. around the house. Too bad the lil’ guy’s been snipped-snipped, LOL! How old is Jade?
It seems like the kitchen is a popular parking place for purses! I don’t think I’ve ever kept mine in there, hmm.
ines + cha cha says
LOL on the purse thing.
i have a shelf where i line them up.
it’s a shame the black glitter didn’t work out, it could have been cool… you could always just use black polish and glue on some black rhinestones!
you get get the stones cheap at dance shops.

Hi Ines,
Hmm… I might have to try that. 🙂

I see what you mean about Funky Chunky… I looked at it before I read your description and my first thought was “How weird, Karen’s usually so good at applying nail polish!” Superstar, on the other hand, is totally wicked! I’m gettin’ me some some of that (hopefully before Halloween!)
I agree with Lana, Tabs is byootiful! And if he’s not feeling Jade, he could give it a go with my tabby Olive. Or they could have a cat-fight over him!

Hi Rebecca,
Superstar is very COOL. I like wearing it ’round Thanksgiving. It just screams fall to me. 🙂
And LOL, Tabs is a big time player. I think he’d be down for a harem of hot tabby girls!!

wowww funky chunky is just pure fail. i’m not really a fan of glitter polishes, but i lalalalove ruby slippers!
as for purses, they’re all kept on what’s supposed to be a shoe-carousel tower thing.

My favourite is Ruby Slippers there is just something special about that colour. Living in the Northwest and being that we are living in the “ring of fire” and always waiting for the “big one” (earthquake wise that is in the Pacific Northwest), my mom is always trying to get me to have a emergency bag of clothes and shoes by side and I never do. I hang my purse on the knob of my bedroom door though. I think that it is good that you are prepared!

Hi Karen! Is glitter nail polish so trendy this season? I can’t say that I like glitter (no glitter makeup, not on nail or clothes) but I prefer to skip the shine, at least for this season.

My purse hangs out on the dining table. Used to be right next to me at night as well, but cat plays with it too much right next to me.

Hmm I’m not really feeling these, maybe only Ruby Slippers. I suppose if you’re gonna go for glitter, go full on glitter!
Keeping your purse next to your bed is not a laughing feat, I totally understand you. It’d be best to not think that way, but where you live it’s common to have earthquakes and the like, yah? Sorta freaks me out =/

My purse and keys live on a little table next to my front door. I was constantly misplacing my keys around the apartment until I came up with this dedicated spot. But I think that from now on I’ll say it is so I’m ready to leave quickly in case of emergency!
And whenever I can’t find a lipstick or gloss I check purses first, coat pockets second. If it isn’t in those places it is probably long gone.
pinksoysauce says
I like Superstar, but all of them are a bit too Halloweeny for my taste. 🙂 I’m more conservative when it comes to nail polish!
As for Funky Chunky, a lot of nail polish bloggers like Scrangie, ALU, etc, have complained about the hexagons not showing up too. A few of them suggested using a black creme polish then layering Funky Chunky over it so that the hexagons don’t sink. Maybe that could help a bit?
I keep my bags in my room on a few hooks on the wall. But I’ve totally thought about the whole what-to-grab-and-go-in-an-emergency thing as well! I still need to work out the details though…;)
Christy says
I like Ruby Slippers, but I wouldn’t buy the set just to get that polish. Funky Chunky is funky, but not in a good way. I’d throw in some silver or holographic glitter to give it some oomph. And possibly thin out the black to make it more sheer.
I keep my purse by my bed or near the couch that’s near the front door. My life is in my purse, it’s pretty complete for emergencies. 😉 Purse’s I don’t use are lined up in my closet in a 24 inch wide bookshelf, all snuggled up in their sleeping bags. i.e. dust covers.

Ruby Slippers is all kinds of awesome!!! And Superstar isn’t far behind. I wants them both, but I don’t see myself springing for the set. :-/
At night I hang whatever purse I’m using on that given day on the doorknob of the closet in my bedroom. But lately, I’ve been using a backpack for school (blech! I know, but I have too many books to use a fashion bag.) and I prop it up against the foot of the bed at night.
Nora says
My bag is where ever I decided to leave it the night before, couch, bed, floor, chair, kitchen…
The hunt for my bag, however, is never as intense as the hunt for my keys in the morning.
Marina says
I don’t know why but I just don’t like glitter at all especially in nail polish. It reminds me of school.
I keep my purse on the chair in my room 🙂

Wow, uh, that black one is tragic. It really does look like lumpy tar. I like the others, though!

I like Ruby Slippers. The other’s don’t really do anything for me. Thanks for sharing dear 🙂

normally companies are so quick to tout the technology behind their products, and i think finally there is some technology people would be desperate to know about. how did they make that black glitter completely invisible? if you have the technology for invisibility, Lippmann, I think the CIA will be knocking on your door! seriously, though Superstar is a knockout.
