Behold! I’m a makeup magician, and my trademark trick involves making my eye brushes disappear, poof!
One minute they’re there, behaving on the bathroom sink. Next minute…
Have you seen my MAC 217? It was right here a minute ago…
Magic like this is unpredictable, and brushes disappear all the time, sometimes to reappear later in the unlikeliest of places, like the back seats of cars or the pockets of camp shirts.
My 224 was the latest to pull a disappearing act. It must have been swallowed up by the same insatiable accessories eater that consumed my Shu Uemura Lash Curler…
Thankfully, my magic can finally rest. With the new limited edition Dior 1-Couleur Eye Glosses, I may never need to reach for another eyeshadow brush again! — or at least not until fall.
The doe-foot applicator affixed to both of these two $28 sparkling gel shadows (like creamy eye glosses), which start out like a fluffy mousse but dry down to a powder, does wizardly work, precisely guiding the product where I want it on my lids. I just swipe, say “abracadabra!” and blend out the edges with a finger.
Done. 🙂
Um…just be sure to prime first, or you risk jaw-dropping creasing within an hour. With NARS Pro-Prime Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base (the best!) layered beneath them, I get between 6-8 hours of wear.
Oh, and you might want to avoid applying too many layers. These shadows tingle on my lids (it’s supposed to be refreshing). One or two layers seem fine, but many more than that, and they start to sting a little, ouch!

What else can you tell me about these Dior 1-Couleur Eye Glosses?
- They’re new for summer 2012, limited edition and Dior’s first eye glosses
- They’re similar to YSL’s Fard Lumière Aquarésistant Water Resistant Cream Eyeshadows, which I love, but aren’t quite as water resistant, and they come in a tube instead of a pot
- Both shades would be perfect minimalist makeup bag products for a weekend getaway (Catalina Island, anyone?)
- They’re like liquid eyeshadow versions of my beloved NARS Orgasm/Laguna Duo
- They’re perfect for busy beauty bees who want sparkling eye looks in a flash
PRICE: $28 each
AVAILABILITY: Available now at Sephora and sephora.com
MAKEUP AND BEAUTY BLOG RATING: A- (an A if I could wear them without primer)
Chronicle coming to DVD next week!
May 15, to be exact. Yes! It’s probably my all-time favorite origin story for a super villain. You take a regular kid, treat him like dirt for years, and then give him super powers. What do you get? Well, sometimes you get a super villain.
I know it’s only May, but it’s my favorite sci-fi movie of the year so far. We’ll see if that holds after Prometheus comes out in June.
In other news, guess who made it to the weekend. You guessed it! We did. 🙂
It’s supposed to be nice and sunny here tomorrow, so I’m hoping I can sneak in a hike.
What are you up to tonight? Tabs and I have one more episode of Game of Thrones to watch…
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

Love how 560 Tan looks! It looks like it’ll be nice as a base too. I would probably use it on lazy days, when I don’t have the time or energy to put on a full look, but still want to look fresh and awake. =)
Karen says
These are great for lazy days, Joyce!
Appu says
Tan would look amazing beneath Woodwinked…one of my favorite MAC eye shadows! 🙂
Karen says
Hi Appu,
Great idea! I’ll try that this week.
Hope you had a great weekend!
Kayla says
I love BOTH of these, and the quickness & ease of use are sounding perfect for my needs right now. So perfect, that I’m somehow justifying spending nearly $60 on them… Have you tried blending them for one look? Say, the pink on the lid & brown in the crease?
Karen says
Hi Kayla,
I have, and it’s SUPER pretty and easy to blend, to boot. I do the tan on the lid and the peachy pink on the brow bone or vice versa. Both looks are very pretty and quick.
Oh, and another thing: you could easily use both as primers to bump up the intensity of your powder eye shadows.
kalcedon says
These look fantastic on you! I’m in lovw with Sunset! The perfect shade of pink!
And I love Chronicle also! I won tickets on a giveaway for it, and I didn’t have too high expectations, because I’m not really a sci-fi fan, but I was so captured by the whole background story and the emotional and philosophical questions in this movie, like how the powers or owning the powers affect three different types of people (the one made fun out of, the popularity crazed one and the content one who is balanced),
Karen says
Hi Kalcedon,
I’m glad to find a fellow fan of the movie. If you get the chance, try to catch it again on DVD. It’s even better the second time around.
And YAY for winning the tickets! I never win anything. 🙁
nawi says
Bought these too and ove them as well glad to read about the tingle I did not know that that was due to too much layering. I use them in combination with the new dior palettes to intensify the colours and get that extra shimmer love how it looks in the sunlight. After reading this review i will have to try using them with a primer on there own. looks great on you!
Karen says
Hi Nawi!
Ooh, which of the palettes did you get?
Sunny @ Mostly Sunny says
I know I definitely have something like Tan in my stash already (in pressed shadow form), but it’s so adorable that I still want it anyways! Most things don’t last on my lids with no primer, so I’d just suck it up and use a primer. It’s not exactly a problem for me 🙂
Karen says
Hi Sunny,
You gotta try it! It could also work as a primer for your pressed shadow!
Marina says
These look beautiful on you! As for the film, I am going to see Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows today. And yay for Game Of Thrones, it’s getting better and better!
Karen says
Hi Marina,
How was Dark Shadows? I’m curious!
Emi at Project Swatch says
These are so pretty! I especially like the tan, but both are very flattering on you!
Karen says
Thanks, Emi! I hope you give them a try.
How was your weekend? Good, I hope!
Chris25 says
Pretty, but the colors are kinda dupable for me.
Karen says
The tan would look great on you, Chris!
And a happy cat mom’s day to you!
Vijaya says
Yes! I must have these! So pretty!
Karen says
Yay, Dior! 🙂
Amanda says
Tan looks very pretty but I’m not fond of the price. For that amount I’d expect to get better wear without a primer.
Karen says
Hi Amanda,
If your lids are less oily you might get a better wear time.
Hope you had a good weekend!
R says
I wonder why they would have chosen to launch this product with a pink colour. It looks gorgeous on your skin, Karen, but I imagine it would be a tougher for fair skinned gals to use?
-R
Karen says
Hi R,
I built it up here so you could see it on my lids, but you could easily sheer it out so it’s more like a wash of pink if you’re very fair. Can you wear NARS Orgasm? If you can wear that color, then you could wear Sunset.
Katherine G says
The eye glosses are really pretty. I use something similar from the Victoria’s Secret line, and they wear all day when applied with a good primer (there is something about cream or gloss shadows – they don’t seem to stick very well unless applied with a primer, and unless they are UD 24/7 eyeshadow sticks, or the recent Maybelline Color Tattoo cream shadows).
I have found that one way to help prevent creasing (with and without a good primer) is to hold your eyelid down until the cream or gloss shadow starts setting a bit. It seems to work for giving them staying power, and for the more stubborn creams, eyeshadow cream sticks and glosses, I pat them on in layers over the primer, which seems to work to keep them on for longer than 2 hours.
Karen says
Hi Katherine,
I have buddies who love that Victoria’s secret eye gloss. I still haven’t gotten around to trying it yet, though.
Thanks for the tip about waiting for the product to settle — I’ll try that.
Hope you had a great weekend!
Stèphanie says
Tan looks pretty! I think this would be pretty if you use it as an highlight when you’re tan.
Karen says
Hi Stèphanie,
Great idea! It would be super pretty on the inner corner, especially.
Nina says
Gorgeous … I love these!
