Who knew Clarins makeup was so fabulous? Up until a few weeks ago, I thought of the brand solely as a skin care line, but discovering Wonder Mint teal mascara a few weeks ago changed all that. It prompted me to do some additional “research” (aka playing with makeup!) into their Summer Fever line, and I uncovered other hidden gems.
The Sun Lip Balms ($19 each) are shimmery, limited edition glosses available in two shades — Rose Bikini (the hot pink pictured above) and a neon orange called Orange Delight (shown below).
The marketing…
- Shea, wild mango and rice oil extracts in the product moisturize, nourish and soothe lips
- Olive oil provides the moisture
- Vitamin A and vitamin E repair and protect lips against free radicals
- SPF 6 protects against UVB rays responsible for premature skin aging and dry lips
The two Sun Balm colors are bold, yet still have a subtle duochrome quality to them, flashing from orange to blue, or from pink to purple, depending on the light and angle of view. Both shades contain the tiniest flecks of blue, green, and purple glitter, making the colors both playful and interesting. That’s also how I feel about the look I get with Wonder Mint — playful and interesting.
These are colors I’d wear with a Burberry bikini, sipping champagne on a yacht in the Mediterranean, *not* colors I’d wear with big hair while guzzling a can of Pabst Blue Ribbon on the Jersey shore. Ya dig?
Orange Delight on the left, Bikini Pink on the right
I will definitely include these in my ever-growing makeup kit this summer, with one big caveat: the texture is thin (and tastes like fruit punch, go figure), and the product doesn’t have great staying power. It’s all but gone from my lips after a couple hours of wear or a single meal.
By layering either gloss on top of a non-drying, cream lip liner, I was able to push the lifespan up by another hour or two.
First, trace the outline of your lips with liner, then fill in the rest of the lip with the same color. Pop a layer or two of gloss on top, and you’re good for at least three-four hours. Try Chanel Pretty Pink lipliner with Bikini Pink, or neutral shades like MAC Subculture with Orange Delight.

The Clarins Summer Fever release may not have arrived with as much fanfare or hype as big summer collections from MAC or Chanel, but the line still deserves a look. If Clarins keeps up the good work with future releases, I think they could rise up from under the radar.
Clarins is one of my new favorite brands. Expect more reviews of other Summer Fever items in the coming days!
Check out the Clarins Summer Fever collection in person at Nordstrom or Macy’s stores, or stop by the Clarins website for details.
Hey, hey, it’s Tuesday! I’m super sore from dance class last night; we did a routine where we had to crawl all over the floor and whip our hair around (a la video girls!), and now I’m bruised and stiff. Honestly, I gotta say that dropping it like it’s hot gets a bit challenging after 30. I can still work it when I have to, but now things like Icy Hot and Tiger Balm are up in the mix. 🙂
What’s up for today? How’s work treatin’ ya?

When I saw the first picture of the pink lip gloss I literally said “OHHH!” outloud.haha I love it!! They are both awesome shades. Yay for birthday money coming up, I’m going to buy one! 🙂
I feel like today was a non-day. It’s neither here nor there and it’s a very weird feeling.haha

Heya Bridget,
I think I had the exact same response when I first saw the pink gloss. The orange was a wonderful surprise too. Either would be a most excellent birthday present!
Maybe your evening will pick up and something exciting will happen. Ya never know!
I’m at work right now, just waiting to leave. Le sigh! I want to go home and eat ice cream. 🙂

LOL at your colorful nails! Those are huge tubes of lip glosses! I think both colors look nice but I’m not feeling the gloss lately. Viva Glam V totally changed my life, now I’m back to MAC lustre lipsticks 🙂
My orders finally came today, 2 out of 3. Can you believe I finally got Parrot after all the bitching I did a while back? And can you believe they still have the shade up in MAC website? 😛
Parrot is totally wonderful, I feel bad that I didn’t get it earlier.
Karen says
Hi Dao,
Yeah, Viva Glam V has the tendency to do that. Aren’t those Lustre formulas GREAT? They never dry out the lips and just have enough shine. That reminds me, I just finished my jar of Moisturelush and now have enough stuff to do the BACK TO MAC thang. I need (LOL) another tube of lipstick!
Ahhh… in the end, everyone falls for the PARROT! 😉
Did you get your writing done?

I love the Bikini Pink (big surprise, I know) but the pink sparkle in Orange Delight makes me think it might be the orange I can wear without getting washed out! I am going to try some on at the soonest opportunity!
LOL! I can totally see you writhing around and whipping your hair like an extra in the Cold-Hearted Snake video! You go! 😀
Karen says
Hi Glosslizard,
The orange has very subtle purple flecks that really take it to the next level. It’s truly a beautiful gloss. Clarins… who knew?!?!
I think I gotta remember next time I go to class to like, take some Advil beforehand, LOL. And maybe I’ll stick a whole bunch of those Icy Hot sticky pads on, too. Remember when that video was considered scandalous? Now it’s so tame!

It’s on its way, this thing takes forever, grrrrrr!

Oh that Rose Pink is hawt! It doesn’t go over the top. I bet I could pull it off work.
Man! What a day. I can’t wait to veg out on the couch tonight and watch tv….

I like Rose Bikini on your lips a lot. I have no chance to be on a yatch sipping champagne, so I’ll skip them. LOL… Is that Essie Neon Collection on your nails? I like Short Short and Shorty Pants! I’m going bananas over Shorty Pants.
vivien says
Wow that pink is drool-worthy!!! It kinda looks like a wearable, not so OMG version of Style-Minx…?
Karen says
Hi Dao,
Woo hoo! That’s good to hear! I hope you are finished. 🙂 You’ll have to reward yourself with some makeup when you are done.
Karen says
Hi Kris,
You could totally wear it to work. Dunno if it would fly in an ultra-conservative environment like law, but you can always wear it on weekends and nights out. 🙂
Karen says
Hi Nikki,
Glad you liked ’em, Nikki! They are both very happy colors. Have a great evening.
Karen says
Hi Miss QQ,
Yup, that’s Essie! Shorty Pants is very cute.
Oh, and I prolly won’t be on a yacht sippin’ champagne either, LOL. If I ever do get one, though, I’m throwing a fat party! I’ll be BYOM (bring your own makeup). 🙂
Karen says
Hi Vivien,
Yah, for sure! For a hot pink it’s suprisingly wearable…
I will always soft spot for the uber hot Style Minx, though!
Tiffany says
Hey Karen! Did you use a lip liner in those pics? Colors always show up so ‘true’ on you. Both those colors look great with your skintone!
Karen says
Hi Tiffany,
Nope, no lip liner in these pictures. I used them on their own in these pictures. I think part of the reason why the colors show up that way is that my lips aren’t very pigmented (although I wish they were, sigh). 🙂 Do you think you might try ’em? I hope so!
Tiffany says
Thanks for the info Karen! I am thinking about getting the pink one. It looks soooo pretty.
I guess I do have pigmented lips, because gloss usually just adds shine and sparkle on me, but no true color. For example, I got clinique bamboo pink ofter you posted about it – it looked gorgeous and I have a thing for lip products with spf. But on me, it looks nothing like what it looks like on you! So sad 🙁
Karen says
Hi Tiffany,
I’m guessing the Bikini Pink will definitely show up because it’s very pigmented! That’s too bad about the Bamboo Pink. 🙁 Did you return it? If you still have it around and are feeling motivated you might want to try “neutralizing” your lip color with foundation first before applying, or perhaps you could layer it other lipstick shades underneath it so that you can get some use out of it? I really do love those Glosswears and think that they are some of the best glosses on the market right now.
Tiffany says
hey Karen,
I did keep the glosswear, so maybe I’ll have some time this weekend to play around and see what I can do to get it to show up more! have you seen/tried the cabana crush one? it looks perfect for summer!

loving the Orange Delight shade – i love wearing orange/corals/peach glosses this time of year even though it’s foggy here in the city.
thanks – i’ll have to check this out! any lipliner suggestions? i’m a NC42 MAC shade – i wonder if Creme O’spice cremestick would work well with this….
