Today my Bay Area buddy Glosslizard shares her thoughts on Benefit Posietint lip and cheek stain.
Hello, all you MBB beauties! Glosslizard here, for the ever-fabulous and currently vacationing Karen!
I recently had the chance to play with Benefit Cosmetic’s Posietint lip and cheek stain ($28), thanks to a generous sample from one of the lovely MA’s at my local Benefit boutique!
Posietint is not new (it was released last year) but is the younger, flirtier sister of Benefit’s cult fave lip and cheek stain, Benetint (also $28).
It’s a lighter color than Benetint (Posietint is described as “petal pink” vs. Benetint’s “Rose”) and seems aimed at fairer complexions.
The bubble-gum pink fluid has a thicker texture than Benetint, almost gel-like, and spreads easily over cheeks and lips.
Bare lips
One coat
I found that one coat gave my lips a super-faint pink flush that was very flattering, and the kind of thing I might wear to work out when I don’t want to look like I bothered to wear makeup (hah)!
Two coats
Two coats (applying a thin coat, allowing it to dry, and then applying the next) provided a more vibrant shade of pink, and three coats left my lips with a definite rosy flush comparable to a light coat of Benetint. It felt no more drying than bare lips, but I prefer it with a touch of gloss!
Swatch for texture
I tried Posietint on my cheeks as well, and it gave a lovely, sheer hint of color. It would look gorgeous yet understated on pale-skinned ladies, and would probably work well on fair to medium complexions layered under or over a bronzer!
The lasting power of Posietint is not amazing but seems pretty good for a light-colored stain. One coat on my lips didn’t last through eating or drinking anything, two coats left a light but visible flush after I indulged in tea and snacks, and three coats lasted all afternoon and into the evening under a coat of gloss.
A couple warnings…
First, Posietint comes in a container with an opaque coloring, and the bottle color is not the color of the product! To me, the bottle is a little peachy or coral, while the stain itself is definitely a blue-based pink. If you’re looking for a warmer color I would suggest looking elsewhere.
Second, as with all stains, you’ll get the best results with a smooth, even starting surface, so exfoliate lips (and cheeks too, if necessary) first! A damp washcloth rubbed gently on the lips after showering works well, or, for an indulgence, I love Tarte’s FRXtion lip exfoliator ($11)!
How ’bout your favorite lip/cheek stains? Have any worth sharing?

That is so pretty! I wish I could find an extra nice MUA at the Benefit counter, I’d love a sample. MUA are hard to come by at the nearest Macy’s, I can never get help at the make up counters there.

I forgot to answer the question. I really like the Stila cheek/lip stain cream, but it does need touching up.
I also have a tube of Origins Pinch your Cheeks that I once loved, until I swatched a sample of the MAC Just a pInch blush at the MAC counter (they were already sold out!). Now I just can’t seem to get the Origins gel to blend, hello clown cheeks!

Hey Glosslizard,
Great post! Not only do you give good makeup advise, but you also write a great blog entry. Do you have your own blog? If not you should start one. I haven’t found a good blog whose authors have the same coloring as me, and I believe you are similar…

I haven’t tried many other stains besides Benetint. I bought Posietint last year but I haven’t used it much. I love the color but I feel like it dries too quickly. If I don’t blend it within a milisecond, it literally stains my face (which sucks if you apply it in sripes like the directions tell you to). It stains my fingers too. I’ve taken to applying it directly to a sponge and then to my face so I can blend it as it touches my skin (but the sponge absorbs most of it). I’m going to keep trying to make it work though because I do love the color. Any tips? Strangely, I do not have the same problem with Benetint, even though it’s darker.

I should clarify that I was referring to using it as blush in my previous comment. I haven’t had any issues with it as lipcolor. Also I read on the comments in the Sephora website that some people use it under their foundation/powder, and some use it over. Is that just a matter of preference? Which way do you use it?

I have both the Benefit and the Posie Tint and I must say I love them both – their staying power is something amazing! I also have the Bobbi Brown cheek color and the MAC cheek gel … and while I love those, I am still a Benefit loyalist! I so love double/triple/multi purpose products!

I have thought about trying this; I just haven’t gotten around to it yet. Lord knows I have fair skin–perfect strangers ask if I work night shift (I do!) The only other stain I’ve ever tried is the Covergirl lip stain, and I got a color that did not turn out to be flattering.

Hi Tali,
Thanks so much! 🙂
Hi Indian Girl,
Ooh, thank you, I’ll check those out too!
Hi Dao,
Aaw, thanks, sweetie! 😀
Hi TaLaisa,
Do you have a Sephora near you? They are very generous with samples as well! And yeah, I also have trouble blending on the cheeks, my best advice is just to start sheer and build!
Hi Lauren,
Wow, thank you so much! *blushes* I don’t have a blog, but if you have a few products in mind I could tell you some of my favorites!
Hi Sole,
I know what you mean with the cheeks, often my fingers end up pinker than my cheeks do! 😉
I find that if I dot Posie Tint at the center of where I want the blush (usually on the cheekbone just under the outer corner of the eye) and then blend quickly in both directions, I get an even (if very faint) application. I have to wait about 30 seconds between applications because my cheeks will turn pink when I rub them! After 2-3 coats, I’m pretty happy with the results, but my fingertips are pretty pink! LOL!
Hi Nina,
I love Benefit too! 🙂
Hi Stacie,
I hope this works for you! Definitely try for a sample at Benefit or Sephora, or you could try it on at any counter (although I find that most MUA’s tend to really pverapply blushes compared to my taste)!

Cool thanks for the info on Posietint. It was very useful and informative! Do you have any advice on eyeshadow/liner for ladies with lighter skin tones. The blue-green trend has me captivated!
Thanks to you and Karen for your posts I look forward to each one!

Hi Sakura!
For starters, I have blue-greenish eyes, so my liner choices tend to play that up. I love gray liner as a softer alternative to black, and there are a lot of good ones to choose from!
I also adore blue-green tones in my eye makeup! One of my all-time favorites is the MAC PowerPoint eye pencil in Tealo! A gorgeous color, and their shadow in Plumage (a dark, matte teal) is perfect for setting it. For brighter turquoise liners, both Urban Decay and Make Up For Ever have wonderful choices! Two other lovely liners that work well with pale skin are Chanel’s eye pencil in Denim (a light, slightly steely blue — not sure on the availability of this, sorry) and Benefit’s Creaseless Creme shadow in Skinny Jeans used as a liner.
I also love a pop of bright turquoise at the outer corner for a fun, tropical look! Most of the MAC shadows I love best were limited edition, unfortunately (Parrot, Gulf Stream, Cool Heat) but there are a lot of great shades still out there, try Urban Decay’s Flipside!
Finally, I have to give a mention to a couple of my HG shadows: MAC Femme-fi (a limited edition, but was just re-released with the Sugarsweet collection, so you can find it now) is the best, soft gold I have found for my complexion! It is shimmery and lovely and looks amazing highlighting the inner corner or the browbone! Second, NARS Abyssinia single is a beautiful, light creamy pearl. It is perfect for an all-over base shade or, again, as a highlight on the browbone. It is also permanent (yay)!
Hee hee, I kinda ran off at the keyboard there! Hope that was useful, for you, good luck! 😀

I love posietint! It’s so pretty and easy to use. By the way, your “bare” lips are a beautiful color.

Hi, I just wanna say this is a very good review, but since I’m more interested in using Posietint as a lip tint, I wanna ask you some questions: When applied on lips, what color would it give your lips (is it the bright pink color like the swatch on on your finger??) And since it doesn’t work for you as a lip stain I suppose it doesn’t last long does it?? Sorry for asking so many questions, I’d appreciate it if you can help. Thks so much ^^
