Deep thoughts on unicorns and the new Paul & Joe Make Up Collection 2012 Holiday Kit…
Question: why are unicorns called unicorns when they’re rarely seen around, or eating, corn? Wouldn’t “uni-horns” make more sense? Granted, it doesn’t sound as pretty, but it would be more accurate, don’t you think?
Question: if one were to spend a lot of time hanging out with unicorns, how often would accidental horn injuries occur? The phrase, “you could put an eye out,” seems particularly apt.
Question: what magic did Paul & Joe employ to make one of my favorite mythical beasts, one that I’ve loved since the age of 6 (You should’ve seen my unicorn sticker collection! It was epic!! The stuff of little girl dreams!), seem even cuter and cooler in their new limited edition $60 three-piece set?
As an accessories ho a purse enthusiast, I can’t decide what I like more about this set, one of three prancing onto shelves for the holidays — the sweet satin purse with its golden detailing and purple inner liner, the makeup that comes with it or the unicorn with purple flowers weaved into its mane.
It’s like a treasure you’d find on a dusty shelf in a vintage store behind a row of empty perfume bottles and silver combs (I love finding things like that). 🙂
The clutch also comes with a couple pieces of pretty great cosmetics, like a shimmery, peachy pink blush with tiny flecks of gold and silver glitter (NOTE: the snowflake pattern is just an overspray that disappears after the first use).
Healthy, glowing skin a la Charlize Theron can be found here.
Paul & Joe also included a jar of nearly weightless matte translucent face powder, which I like to use to set my under-eye concealer.
I’m tempted to just display the jar on my bathroom shelf, where I can see the unicorn on the cap every single day…
What a sweet set! It’s small, but the purse is just too cute, and the makeup should work well on most skin tones.
I can see this being a very special gift for a teenager, or otherwise young-at-heart individual who still believes in magic. 🙂
PRICE: $60

MAKEUP AND BEAUTY BLOG RATING: A
Pumpkin madness!
Sooo, I went to Trader Joe’s yesterday to pick up a few groceries, and hello! — it was pumpkin madness up in there. The pumpkin-flavored products are out in force.
I had their delicious pumpkin soup for dinner last night and would have gobbled down every last drop had I not dropped the stupid TV remote control into my bowl (a classic Karen move).
The soup, though, was great. Kinda savory and sweet. I bet it would be NOM with a grilled cheese sandwich, and speaking of that…my tummy’s rumbling!
What’s for din-din? 🙂
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

I just had that soup last night! I had some leftover cornbread that I turned into croutons and they were yummy in the soup.
Tonight I was out running errands late so I stopped into my favorite local diner and had some seafood pasta.
Karen says
Hi Heidi,
That’s a genius idea. Sometimes I get the cornbread at Whole Foods and just can’t finish it all…how do you turn it into croutons?
Heidi says
It’s so easy. It works best when the cornbread’s a little stale. Cut it into cubes, toss with olive oil, salt and pepper and whatever seasoning floats your boat (I used some thyme and sage to go well with the pumpkin soup), and then bake in the oven on a cookie sheet for about 10 minutes or until it’s golden and crispy. Anywhere around 375 or 400 degrees is fine. Toss them around once or twice while they’re baking.
Karen says
Thank you, friend! I will definitely give it a go. I bet they’d be good with tomato soup, too. OM NOM NOM!

OMG! This set is beyond adorable! I’ve never used anything Paul & Joe, but UNICORNS. I love the lid on the powder jar.
I might have to put together some gluten-free pumpkin muffins or something. And I’ll definitely have to stop by TJ’s and get pumpkin butter – my mom LOVES it, and they don’t have a TJ’s anywhere near my hometown!
Karen says
Hi Chelsea,
They ALWAYS get me with their packaging. 🙂 It’s like they know cat ladies (and unicorn enthusiasts) inside and out.
Random Trader Joe’s moment: if your mom likes gingersnaps, they have a really good cookie called Triple Ginger. It’s so good!
Chelsea says
You know, I’m not sure how she feels about ginger the food! I know she likes ginger people, like me :p
Karen says
LOL! 🙂 Well, if she likes it, then the cookies are great.

Hellooo, sequins! For a second there, I was expecting a Sephora + Cinderella post… but then my reading skills kicked in and my brain picked up the ball 😛
Hope pumpkin season keeps going this well for you ;o) We get started early up here in Canada (the pies have to start coming out for our just-passed Thanksgiving), but I think you guys still win out in the end — our green grocery stores aren’t nearly as tasty as Trader Joe’s!
Anna says
Umm hello gorgeous! How stunning are you! =D
Agata says
You look stunning Karen. What nail polish are you wearing?

Cute collection! Paul&Joe always makes the most adorable stuff.
Speaking of pumpkin and TJ, you should try their Pumpkin Greek Yogurt. It tastes really good (and this is coming from someone who doesn’t really eat Greek yogurt) 😀

That sequin dress is amazing! You look lovely, Karen.
Funny, I just bought pumpkin soup in a carton the other day, too, but not from Trader Joe’s since we don’t have it on this side of the world. So yummy!

Karen, this collection looks amazing! I am itching to find some nice new holiday products. I’ve been on this organizing high and am planning on getting some mini drawers for my makeup. I recently got an earring organizer and it’s AMAZING.
Also, I totally went pumpkin crazy at Trader Joe’s too!! I got the Pumpkin Spice coffee, Pumpkin and Chocolate mousse cake, Pumpkin macarons, and Pumpkin Ale (I was curious!) The person at the register was amused 😛

I love the pumpkin madness! I bought the bread mix too. It lasted all of two days because it was so delicious!

I love that bag! I wish it was available without what is inside. It’s so cute!
I also must know, what are you wearing on your nails? I love the purple!
Have you ever read the Last Unicorn? It’s one of my favorite books (and movies)! The Butterfly defines them as such: “Unicorn. Old French, “unicorne”. Latin, “unicornis”. Literally, one horned: “unus”, one, and “cornu”, a horn. A fabulous animal resembling a horse with one horn. Visible only to those who search and trust, and generally mistaken for a white mare. Unicorn.” Man, now I want to re-read it!
Marilyn says
PS: I love your new layout! It’s so interactive and beautiful!
Lorraine says
OMG. I still love unicorns! Too bad I don’t know of any Paul and Joe counters here in Canada. 🙁
Mahnaz says
Hi Karen! I love your look! Where did you get those gorgeous earrings from?? Thanks so much!
Karen says
Hi Mahnaz,
I got them online from Haute Look about a month or so ago; they’re by a designer named Cam & Zooey.
Mahnaz says
Thank you Karen!
