Most of my college memories have faded into a fuzzy, frosty haze, but the chaotic mornings I spent rushing to get ready before early lectures remain fresh, fresh, fresh!
The drill was always the same: after rolling out of bed, I’d pull my hair into a ponytail, grab a pair of sunglasses, stuff my makeup bag into my backpack (hoping to get ready in the girl’s bathroom before class), and sprint to catch the bus. 🙂
If you foresee a similarly hectic schedule this fall, think about streamlining, and consider adding the Tarte Lock & Roll Creaseless Eyeshadow Duos ($17 each) to your beauty routine.
With a cream shadow base on one end and an eyeshadow rollerball on the other, the nine dual-tipped shimmery shadows work like magic wands in the hurried hands of someone in a rush.
The duos, which have been part of Tarte’s permanent line for a while, make quick work of simple makeup looks because they don’t require a separate brush (the cream shadow ends already have one).
Just apply a thin layer of product with one of the cream shadow ends, blend out the edges with a finger (hurry, because it dries in less than a minute), and set the look using the rollerball end to apply the loose shadow directly on top.
Choose from a nice selection of pigmented, shimmery shades — Amethyst (a shimmery lavender), Bronze (a shimmery bronze), Gunmetal (a shimmery purplish gray), Patina (a shimmery light green), Quartz (a shimmery pale pink), Rose Gold (a shimmery pinkish gold), Slate (a shimmery deep gray), Sandstone (a shimmery nude) and Moss (a shimmery khaki).
NOTE: I spotted Moss, the shade shown at the top of the post, online at sephora.com, but I couldn’t find it on tartecosmetics.com.
I’ve worn Moss off and on for a few weeks, and I think I’ve gotten pretty good at banging out simple looks with it… What I wouldn’t have given to have these in my makeup bag back in the day, le sigh!
On me Moss lasts about 14 hours (I have oily lids), give or take, without noticeably creasing or fading — that’s without a layer of primer worn underneath — and I’ve read reviews on Sephora’s website from gals claiming great wear time with the other shades, too.
Swatches of Moss on NC35 skin from left: cream shadow, powder shadow, cream and powder shadow layered together
Even though I’m not heading back to school this fall, I plan to keep a Lock & Roll close at hand in case I need to get ready in jiffy. They could stand to be a few dollars less than $17 apiece, but they actually are right now thanks to the ongoing Friends and Family Sale. The sale brings them down to $10.20 each after 40% off! 🙂 Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: A
You might like the Tarte Lock & Roll Creaseless Eyeshadow Duos if…
- You like long-wearing eye makeup that’s a cinch to apply
- You love shimmery shadows
- You don’t have a lot of time to get ready
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

I got one of these free as my gift from Sephora went I spent a certain amount… I didn’t love it at first but it has really grown on me! Mine is small, probably a sample size but it actually is pretty long lasting and is a great base to build upon!
Karen says
Yeah! I’m glad you like these too! 🙂
Nina says
Im all for nifty and quick products, plus I love Tarte! 🙂
Karen says
Me too! 🙂 Have you tried their Lights, Camera, Lashes or the glosses? I love ’em!
Nina says
The glosses I have. They are pure love, arent they?
I think theyre pretty affordable, esp since its eco friendly and cruelty free.
They are having their Friends and Family sale atm, code is FFAUG. 🙂
Karen says
Yeah, I know.
If anybody wants more deets on the F& F sale here they are:

It’s so hard! 🙂

I really like these too! I actually got a set from sephora.com that had 3 smaller tubes of these for only $15 on sale. Pretty sure they still have ’em. ^_^
Karen says
Those small tubes are so cute! What colors do you have?
MlleDina says
I got both the gunmetal and rose gold – while I love the colors, I can’t say I like the application. It’s hard to get that roller color to go precisely where I want it. Also, power eyeshadow + primer last longer on me than this duo, so it’s not really time saving either.
I will not be buying these again;
HOWEVER Tarte is wonderful wonderful line. Their cheek stains are my daily go-to (great staying power) and their 24-7 lip balms have great colors. And they’re all organic!
Karen says
Hi MlleDina,
Sorry to hear these didn’t work that well on you. I’m glad you like other stuff from the line, though. Have you tried the glosses? They’re excellent!
Lee says
I never realized but we have Tarte here in aus in Myers so i think ill check them out now hehe
Karen says
They’ve got lots of great stuff. Check out the cheek stains, too.
Kymberlee says
Pass on these BUT I am considering getting Lights, Camera, Lashes. I have DiorShow right now and I like it but my lashes do not hold a curl when I use it. I’m wondering if L,C,L will be better for that.
Karen (or anyone else), have you tried any Living Proof or Blow products? Thoughts?
Karen says
Lights, Camera, Lashes is AWESOME for curl hold. It’s my fave Tarte mascara. 🙂
I used Living Proof leave-in and I liked it!
Kymberlee says
I LOVE Living Proof. I wasn’t sure if you’ve tried it because I haven’t seen a review. Do you plan to do one?
Also, I heard that a complete Full line will be out at the end of September…. soooo excited!
Karen says
I had a sample about a year ago and don’t really remember enough details to review it, but if I get around to buying some stuff at Sephora I’ll probably write about it.
What items do you use and like from the line?
Jen says
Like a few other readers, I also had a small sample size from Sephora (I think it was Rose Gold). The color was gorgeous, but I could never get the application right. It applied uneven on me and the rollerball was tricky. I wish I had kept the loose powder and pressed it, because it was so pretty…
Karen says
Hi Jen,
Perhaps the full-sized ones have better rollerballs, as I had no trubs with the color coming out evenly.
Jen says
Hmmm, I’ll keep that in mind. I love the idea of the lock & roll shadows, so maybe one of these days I’ll buy a full sized one.
Maybe it’s kinda like those mini mascaras… I love Diorshow Iconic, but the mini one I have is blaaaah.
Karen says
Or like the MAC brushes! The full-sized ones are awesome but the ones in the kits are just eh for me.
Amber says
This looks kind of awesome. I could see keeping the gunmetal one on hand for transitioning to a quick smoky eye before going out to dinner.
Karen says
Yes! Just add Nymphette and you’re good to go. 🙂
BlovetBeauty says
looks a little bluish on u in the picture but pretty nevertheless 😉
Karen says
Really? I guess it’s because my skin tends to bring out blueish tones.
Mary says
I have gunmetal. It’s really pretty. However, I’ve found that over time the cream shadow gets harder and harder to get out. It sticks to the sides of the bottle and you can’t wiggle the brush very well to pick it up. The powder shadow application is sometimes problematic. With the right brush though, to blend afterward, it’s not a big deal.
Overall, it’s a pricey product for me but definitely doable with this sale price!
Karen says
Hi Mary,
Bummer about the cream shadow giving you trubs. I’ll watch out for mine to see if it does the same thing.
Lora says
Hey Karen!
I love Tabs!!! He has such a cute little boy kitty face 🙂
So anyway, I have yet to try these but I love love love their inner rim eye pencil. It’s the perfect size for my waterlines, and it seems to have a pretty good wear time too.
As for these roller jammies, I was nosing around the Tarte site, and saw that they have a set that has three different colors that aren’t available individually (turquoise, citrine and tanzanite). I’m thinking of picking it up during the FFsale.
Karen says
Hi Lora,
Tabs knows how to work the camera. 🙂
Ooh, I haven’t tried the inner rim eye pencil! The FF sale might be the perfect excuse to give it a go. 🙂
Advah says
Whoh I love those colours! For years and years various shades of the same mossy colour as eyeliner (err, just realised I still do the same, Bobbi’s Forest gel liner anyone??). I find them super flattering with brown eyes and dark lashes!
Not entirely sure how I’d use the eyeshadow rather than just a line of eyeliner though, wouldn’t it look a bit too messy?
Karen says
Yeah, you might be better off with the liner unless you want a super, super smudgy look.
kirsty says
Love the colour and I’m impressed by all the reports of long lasting wear! Wish this brand was easier to get hold of in the UK though
Karen says
If they ever do make it out there you’ve got to try their Lights, Camera, Lashes, the Cheek Stains and the lipglosses. All are fabulous!
Tiffany says
I have a couple of these too, but kinda forgot about them. I need to bust them out again soon!
Karen says
Take ’em out for a spin, girl! They need some loving. 🙂
Ru says
Wow, Karen… you just gave me a flashback of my college days! Back then, I barely wore makeup- just black rimmed eyes with my dark long hair… only my eyes were smudgy by the end of the day (did’t know about gel liners back then!) and I cared more about my hair and it would be perfectly blown out everyday. Trippin down memory lane…
Karen says
Oh man I remember how it took forever for me to blow out my hair on days when I actually had time! What I would’ve given for the T3 and a flat iron back in the day.
Lee says
Hey Karen,
Ok i know this is out of topic but i was wondering if you have tried olays new cleansers? they dont seem 2 be out here yet but when i go 2 their site theres a pic of them, weird 😛
Anyway the lathering cleanser looks like a really good cheaper alternative 2 my clinique cleanser, so hopefully they bring them out here soon 🙂 unless u want 2 send me some lol
It would be really cool if you could do a review on them 🙂
ace says
i should try that- im perpetually late because of my makeup… 😛
Karen says
You gotta give it a go!
Kim says
Easy, long-lasting, glittery AND rollerball? Oh, my. I think I might love Tarte. My list has just gotten longer! 🙂
amy says
Ahh I remember my university days when I just roll out of bed hair unbrushed and on my face I just use concealer, mascara and lipgloss. Sometimes I would just skip the concealer because of laziness and partly to BS profs to show how super tired I am. LOL. Looks like it is back to the back to basics days for me as I am heading back to school to update my skills.
Christy says
I have one of these in a sample size. It sure does make an easy simple eye look when in a major rush 🙂
