While having dinner with a couple of my BFFs last month, my girl J-Money surprised me with a gift — the Aquis Microfiber Hair Towel ($18).
With the care one reserves for items of great value and importance, she looked me dead in the eyes, placed the package in my hands and said, “You’ll understand its power soon enough.”
The Aquis Hair Towel is made from a special microfiber fabric supposedly able to absorb far more water than a regular cotton towel. Awesome, because my hair retains a lot of water and takes forever to dry.
After two weeks with the Aquis, I think I understand why J-Money treated it with such reverence — the thing really works!
Normally, I wrap my hair up with a towel when I step out of the shower and leave it on for about 15 minutes before taking it off to air dry. The process takes about three hours to thoroughly dry my hair.
But doing the same thing with the Acquis wrapped around my head for the first 15 minutes after a shower, drying takes about an hour and a half, or half as long as it takes with a regular towel.
The Aquis even feels better on my head. Regular bath towels are considerably heavier and bulkier, especially once they’re packed with water.
J-Money found the towel at H2O+, but Bed Bath and Beyond sells them for about the same price.
Using one of those 20% off discount coupons Bed Bath and Beyond sends out in the mail brings the cost down to $14 from $18. Not a bad deal.

Mercury in retrograde, NOOO!
The May forecasts are up over at Astrology Zone! My fellow Geminis, get ready for a month of Mercury in retrograde, gah!
I hope the stars line up for me next Tuesday… That’s when I go back to the dentist for the first of three scary appointments involving anesthesia (boo!) and silver dental hooks.
On the bright side, I plan to try out a few new waterproof mascaras. Why not put those tears of anxiety to good use, right? 🙂
How’s your Monday shaping up?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

3 hours for your hair? To be brutally honest, it takes so long for my hair to dry that I honestly just can’t figure out how long. I can take a shower at 3pm and it will still be wet at 10. NO LIES.
Nothing shizztastic better be happening on the 21st! It’s my birthday and I’m going to battle demons if I have to. Sometimes my horoscopes are dead-on, and sometimes they aren’t. Usually they are, and it’s scary.
Glosslizard says
I bought a cheapie ($10) version of this at Long’s and I do like it a lot! My hair is pretty fine so it doesn’t take too long to dry, but, as you say, the light weight on the head when I wrap my hair is fantastic!
I hope your horoscope is… shall we say… imprecise! Good luck with the dentist, although I will look forward to some good recommendations for waterproof mascaras!

This really sounds like the product for me! I hate how messed up the constant blowdrying is on my hair!!

Hi Karen. All the best for the dentist trip! Think of happy thoughts, like makeup, while you are on the dentist chair and everything seems so much better. 😉

Geminis…oh hai! I am Gemini too. :high five:
I have one of these towel (not the same brand) and it helps a lot to soak up the water.
BTW, I went to Rumble Fish last week and it was yummy!

Hi Karen 🙂 I was just thinking that I should buy one of those turbie towels because my hair takes forever to dry. I think I’ll order one of these this week. I love your blog, it’s always full of great ideas!

They often have these towels at Marshalls and TJ Maxx for about $6 – I swear by microfiber towels, my hair thanks me for using them too!!
Amy says
I have three aquis towels. I keep one in my suitcase for when I travel. That’s how much I love these towels.

Karen,
I get these in Shanghai — I went to high school there and my family is still there, so I get a couple every time I go! These microfiber towels have been around for years and years and are really inexpensive, definitely not $18! We use them for beauty purposes, bath, and as dishcloths. Have you heard of these microfiber towels besides this brand?

Hi Catherine,
It’s so fab! You gotta get one. 🙂
Lehea says
I have to agree with Amy on this one. I would love to use this for travel. No need to deal with wrapping my hair with those stiff hotel towels anymore! *evil laugh*
Karen says
Hi Lehea,
And it’s lightweight and thin, too, so it barely takes up space in your suitcase. 🙂

i have one of these towels–or at least a similar towel from sephora. i love it so much! it greatly helps in reducing my get-ready time in that it shortens or completely eliminates my face getting wet from the humidity caused by my wet hair. we don’t have air conditioning in the bathroom, and the wind rarely blows the right way into our window while i’m putting on make up. i have to have a fan on my face and the towel on my head in order to get my makeup done without it being a streaky, unholy hot mess. i’ve gotten husbands clueless about what to get their wives for christmas to buy that towel just because they’ve seen their wives struggle unhappily with the humid face problem.
Karen says
Hi Nai,
We don’t have air conditioning in our bathroom either, and I’ve noticed the same thing — totally makes a difference in the streak department!

Hope your appointment to the dentist goes well. And that towel would be a godsend for me. If I want my hair to be really really dry it takes between three to four hours. I love my thick hair but that’s just… meh
Ooh, and I went to the MAC store in Antwerp yesterday, I was meeting up with a friend now I’m back in Belgium. And I restrained myself considerably. I only got the Just a Pinch blush gel (OMG!!!! Hello holy grail blush! Love the texture and the smoothness and the colour and…) and two eyeshadow pans: Amber Lights and Swimming. Really proud of myself.
Plus, that store is now a full-on pro store so they have EVERYTHING 🙂
Karen says
Hi Karen B.,
Isn’t that the best blush? I’m glad you like it. OH, and yay, Amber Lights and Swimming. I have both of those shades and love them, too. I think it’s so cool that we both have different skin tones but can still wear a lot of similar colors.
I heart the Pro Store! Don’t be surprised if you find yourself there for HOURS.
mukho says
Hi Karen 🙂
I think I saw this at the mall sometime back. I have long hair which I shampoo twice a day (Chennai heat and humidity, sigh…) so my head stays wet more or less thru-out the day. Might try this out 🙂
Oh, and Good luck at the dentist’s! 🙂 🙂
Karen says
Hi Mukho,
You’ve gotta pick one up! It makes a huge difference. 🙂
Thanks for the well wishes for the dentist… I’ll have to do some yoga or drink a gallon of chamomile tea beforehand so I don’t FREAK OUT!
Bisbee says
Karen, I’ve been using these towels for years – I travel with them too. Don’t know what I’d do without them – my hair is VERY thick, but short (chin-length or shorter) – but these towels are worth it if only to have a small, thin, VERY absorbent towel on your head instead of a monster bath towel that keeps falling off!
Karen says
Hi Bisbee,
I’m thinking of picking one up for travel, too. I think this lil’ baby is one the fast track to the “I can’t live without it” list. 🙂
Happy Tuesday!

I will be purchasing one this week now that I’ve read this! My hair is long and think and takes forever to dry. I love sleeping in as late as possible so I don’t dry my hair before work. I roll down the windows as I drive to work. This sounds like it’ll save a lot of time and damp hair in the office (not so professional), thanks!

Hi Vampy Varnish,
Thanks. My appointment isn’t until next week but it’s gonna take me that long to mentally prepare for it. I turn into such a freakshow at the dentist. 🙁
Isn’t this rain annoying? I’m so over it.
Vampy Varnish says
I am too! I refused to carry an umbrella with me today because I will no longer acknowledge rain until October 🙂

Hi Vampy Varnish,
That’s a grand idea! Part of the reason why it irks me is because it rain turns Tabs into a MONSTER. He literally goes nuts, like it’s my fault that he can’t frolic amongst the butterflies and whatnot.

I have this brand of towel and it’s awesome. I’ve had it for over 15 years and it still looks and works like it’s new! When you wash it just note never to use fabric softener!
Leeng says
I have a couple of these towels and they are GREAT! They have completely replaced my blow dryer as I wrap my hair in one immediately after my shower and use a larger one laid over my pillow at night to complete the drying process while I sleep. In the morning my hair is dry and ready to be flat ironed.
Karen says
Hi Leeng,
Laying a towel over the pillow is a great idea.
Sleepy says
Is there a special way to wash these towels? Or can I just throw it in with the rest of the laundry? It sounds like the perfect towel for me. My hair takes forever and a day to dry…
Karen B says
It is, and the staying power is amazing 🙂
It is cool that we can pull off so many colours. Oh, I love swimming, it’s just fresh enough for summer without being obnoxiously bright.
If I’d been on my own they would’ve had to throw me out after a couple of hours probably… hehe

thanks for the review karen! im going to need to get myself one of these pronto!

Ahh! Must purchase. I have a ludicrous amount of hair on my head and it takes hours upon hours to dry.
Seriously. One day, I woke up and put my hair back in a ponytail after showering before going to work. When I went to bed, some of my hair was still damp. I know it’s harder for hair to dry when in a ponytail, but that’s really excessive.
I end up leaving the house with wet hair because my hair is fine and wavy so I don’t like to blow dry it. Grrr. >:o
BooBooNinja says
Budget tip: I’ve been using a $10 microfiber towel that I got from a camping store for years. It works great and is way cheaper!
Jeana says
Karen,
I was wondering if you have tried any of the other aquis hair towels, wraps, etc. After reading your blog I went to the site and am not sure which type to get. I have fine, mostly straight but with a little wave hair. Please help.
