I was really hoping my run of good luck with drugstore haircare products would continue when I gave TRESemmé’s Tres Two Extra Hold Hairspray a try. It’s supposed to offer excellent hold, frizz control and 24-hour humidity resistance without leaving hair crunchy or stiff. All good things, and I was mostly interested in seeing how well it controlled fly-away hairs.
As soon as I caught my first whiff of the stuff, I knew things weren’t working out. It has that classic old-school hairspray scent — like the way high school bathrooms used to smell during the Aqua Net years.
Ingredients
Alcohol Denat., Hydrofluorocarbon 152A, VA/Crotonates, Vinyl Neodecanoate Copolymer, Octylacrylamide, Acrylates, Butylaminoethyl Methacrylate Copolymer, Aminomethyl Propanol, Dimethyl Stearamine, Fragrance (Parfum), Linalool, Limonene, Butylphenyl Methylpropional, Amyl Cinnamal, Hexyl Cinnamal, Citronellol, Geraniol
But if I pinch my nose, I like almost everything else about it — the price ($5 for a big 11-oz. can), how soft and shiny it leaves my hair, how it retains the volume in my style and how it doesn’t flake when I run a brush through it.
Of course, I don’t plan to pinch my nose for a hairspray… 🙂
The spray also covers a very wide area, making it hard to target, and getting the product all over the place, especially when trying to use it the way the directions indicate. They say, “spray section by section, 10-12 inches away from hair.” Hmm, I don’t think so. It’s supposed to let loose a fine mist, but this is more of a thick fog. It actually feels quite wet and heavy on my hair. Plus, it takes a good, long while to dry.
Because it does have excellent hold and does seem to keep static at bay, it’ll do in a bind, but as far as similar products go, I like Suave’s $3 Touchable Finish spray. I prefer the scent, like the finer mist, and it dries quite a bit quicker, too.
PRICE: $5 for an 11-oz. can
AVAILABILITY: Available now at drugstores and also online

Um, what day is it?
Is it Thursday already…? That’s not possible. I swear we just did the Monday Poll.
What are you up to today? School, work, fun in the sun? I hope it’s the later, and if it is, may I live vicariously through you? 🙂
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

I actually really love that spray and use it all the time! I was hoping this would be just as good.

It feels close to Monday to me, too. Time is zooming on by, which is fine because that means summer will be here soon. 😉
As for the hairspray, that’s highly disappointing. I hate that Aqua Net scent. Blech.
Karen says
I can’t wait! I’m already over allergy season.

Ah, the thick fog of Aqua Net. HAHA! Suave is my go-to, also. I use the non-aerosol Max Hold. I’ve never liked aerosol – probably because of the high school bathroom memories! 🙂
I’m glad it’s Thursday and the week is winding down. No fun in the sun, here. It’s still raining and flooding. Have you seen O! Brother, Where Art Thou? I keep thinking of when the Oracle (old, blind guy on the railroad hand cart) says “you will see thangs. Wonderful to tell… a cow, on the roof of a cotton house”. That’s what all the farmer’s fields near the lake are like right now!

LOL, remember walking into the girl’s bathroom and seeing the fog in the air!? Gawd the ’80s were ROUGH. I also remember not being able to breathe half the time in my Bongo jeans (the ones with the zippers and bows on the ankles).
I watched that movie a long time ago when I was half asleep! I need to re-rent it.

You always make me laugh so hard. I think those bathrooms will be the main cause of respiratory failure in the elderly in about 40 years. It’ll all be traced back to the Aqua Net fog. Bongo jeans… ahh, the memories. 🙂 Let me know if you re-rent it and like it. I’m not always a fan of the Cohen Brothers, but the writing in Oh Brother is excellent, as is the acting.

The scent sounds awful. How disappointing.
Karen says
Yeah, it’s very ’80s.
Emily says
Hahaha, Karen, you always manage to make me laugh. I use this hairspray, I’ve never noticed the scent before. Odd.

Hiya 😀 Just wondering, where did you buy the Suave products from? I looked for it at my shoppers drug mart and walmart, and couldn’t find it 🙁 Booo!!
Vijaya says
I just finished taking two finals. Time to relax. <3

Haha Karen! I bought the Elnett L’oreal Hairspray(I think it was for colour treated hair).. I can’t stand the smell. I think its that old school hairspray smell your talking about! I swear, all day I can smell it on my hair.. I don’t want to throw it out though! 🙁

I was in a hurry on our way to a funeral we stopped in a dollar general and bought Aqua Net. Good thing I didn’t need it!

I love Tres Two! I’ve used it for years. I agree about the drying time, but it is worth it for the hold and feel it imparts. I’ve never noticed the smell…..but after years of being doused in my mom’s Rave Level 3 hair spray, I might be desensitized.
