The Breast Cancer Awareness Month Sign Project and Giveaway
WINNER: Drum roll please… Katie! Congratulations, you’re the winner of $400 in makeup from MAC and Chanel.
Hi, ladies. As many of you know, breast cancer has touched my family, as it has many of yours. It’s something I think about all year long, but especially when October rolls around.
For the past two years I’ve run donations for breast cancer charities, but this year I’d like us to try something different — an e-rally of sorts.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month is about many things — remembering friends and family, promoting the importance of early detection, helping to raise funds for research and treatment, and standing in support of those affected by the disease.
That’s why I made the sign you see at the top of this post. It’s one easy way to say, “We’re all in this together, and I’m here with you.”
You’ll have many opportunities to give and show financial support on other sites and in stores this month, but this gesture’s simply about emotional support and the strength of solidarity.
Will you make your sign and stand with me?
Join me this Breast Cancer Awareness Month by taking a picture of yourself with a sign like the one at the top of this post. You’ll also be entered to win a $400 prize package of goodies (20 products in all) from MAC and Chanel. Scroll down for the full deets…

Karen says
Awesome, Amee. 🙂
Yup, it’s open to international readers. All you gotta do is snap a pic of yourself holding a piece of paper that says, “October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month” and email it to me, like with a camera phone, at karen@makeupandbeautyblog.com. Or use Twitter or Flickr or something and just leave a comment with a link.
Plus, if you do it, not only are you showing your support for the cause, but you’ll have a pretty good chance of winning a fairly huge makeup haul.
Amee says
HI Karen,

Amee says
Very great job you doing sweet heart…
Love you.
Karen says
Hi, again, Amee. Don’t forget to also send your pic, okay? You’re not entered until you also link to or email a copy of a sign like the one at the top of the post.
G’night, or good day. Uh… what time is it over there in India right now?
Jen says
Oh, Karen… You’re kind of amazing.
Karen says
We’re all amazing, Jen.
Have a good night.
Jen says

Breast cancer does not run in my family… but you just never know. :S
Once again, this is a great idea! Love your blog!
Caroline says
People die of cancer, all cancers, all the time. not just breast cancer. we should not support any forms of cancer and raise awareness of them? It makes no more pain of losing a mother to breast cancer than to lose than dad in lekumi. Think about it!
Caroline says
It should sa: “We we should support any forms of cancer and raise awareness of them!”. Google translet 😉 haha
Karen says
Of course we should, Caroline, and I would be happy to accept a sign that reads that way as a valid entry in this giveaway. 🙂
As to your larger point, though, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with dedicating this month to breast cancer. In no way does our acknowledgment of one disease diminish the suffering caused by other ailments. Lo, if we only had more than 12 months to honor them all.
I feel for anyone who’s lost someone to anything tragic, be it suicide, accidental death, disease, violence and war, drug abuse — to anything. Loss is a terrible, tragic thing no matter what the cause — but I see great value in honoring the millions of people around the world impacted by this particular disease, and frankly it hits home for me because of my family’s personal connection to the disease.
And I also believe that the goodwill and benefits of increased awareness and financial support raised throughout this month extend beyond the issue of breast cancer alone.
Sleep well, and please know that I do hear where you’re coming from, Caroline. Take care, and I hope you decide to post again soon.
Yanna says
This is such a beautiful sign. It has also touched my family, my grandma and godmother both died of breast cancer. Since this happened I go to the doctor every year for a checkup, since I have a lot of risk to get it too.
Anyway, this post just made my day and made me realize I definitely should do something to support all those women out there.
You may be expecting a picture of me very soon!
Appreciate the work you’re doing
Grtz from Belgium
xoxoxo
Karen says
Hi Yanna,
I’m keeping me eyes peeled for your picture, and it doesn’t have to be anything fancy. Even a pic emailed (karen@makeupandbeautyblog.com) from a phone with a sign scribbled on plain paper works.
Have a good weekend, and thank you for participating.
Brenda says
Great action … you’ve got mail!
Karen says
Got it, Brenda! 🙂
Emily says
I hope your mother in law is doing better. Last year we lost my aunt to her second round with breast cancer during the holiday’s.
Thank you for raising awareness. Often it takes loosing someone to really appreciate people who are joining together and fighting for a cause.
Karen says
Hi Emily,
I think you’re very right. I’m sorry to hear about your loss. I don’t mean to sound selfish by talking about my situation, but I worry about my mum-in-law’s cancer recurring (my own mom also had a different cancer many years ago). I think about it all the time, and I know she does too. It’s a curse that hangs over every survivor’s head forever. Every ache or pain, they wonder if it’s the cancer returning because sometimes it does. What a horrible thing.
Take care, Em. Big hug from me and kitty hugs from Tabs.
Emily says
You didn’t come off selfish at all. I’m sorry if my sentences came out sounding a little rude; I had just gotten up and word were not doing the forming of the sentences very well yet.
I can’t imagine what it’s like to have something like that hanging over your head. It takes a very strong person to be able to live with that day in and day out.
Niki says
Hi Karen,
This has touched my family too! My mom is struggling with her second round of it as a matter of fact. I have a series of “pink” posts lined up but yesterday I did an article about her – which doesn’t show up for some reason on comment luv, but if you’d like to have a look at it!
I’m kind of doing a little round up of bloggers who are posting for BCA and I’ll put your link there as well.
Karen says
Hi Niki,
I’m so sorry to hear about your mom having to go through it again. After seeing how hard the treatment and emotional turmoil of it was for my mum-in-law, it would be hard to imagine having to do it again. But I know it happens a lot, recurrence.
I wish I could reach across the Web and give you and your mom a big hug right now. Try to stay positive, and reach out to me if you ever need someone to talk to.
What a wonderful post
Alison says
I think this is a lovely idea and it’s good to keep an issue like breast cancer at the forefront of our minds. If this post reminds just one person to check themselves then it’s fantastic (It reminded me too, I don’t do it as often as I should!).
My cousin was diagnosed when she was just 22 yrs old she had a mastectomy and re-construct from her stomach (she was chuffed she got a boob job and a tummy tuck at the same time! She handled the whole thing so amazingly well) she just got her 5 year all clear a couple of months back and is now undergoing tests to see if her ovaries have got through the chemo unscathed. I think she will be looking to start a family asap when she gets the a-okay.
I agree with your reply to Caroline (above) that it would be easier if there were more than 12 months in the year to support every single worthy cause, I am personally a supporter of Kidney Research UK (as well as Cancer charities and our local Lifeboats and Air Ambulance) because I suffered with renal failure at 18 months old and had my right kidney removed at the age of 9. I am 100% healthy now but without the donations the research would not be possible and I may not be here to tell the tale.
Anyway, I’m currently trying to think up what I do for Breast Cancer piece and will e-mail it to you before the end of the month.
Karen says
Hi, Alison. On behalf of everyone who will benefit from your generosity, I thank you because I know from my own family experience how important that generosity is. My mum-in-law has benefited from the research being done into cancer treatments. Both the kind of chemo she received and some of the other treatments were very cutting edge and had only become available within months of her diagnoses.
The support REALLY matters. It’s not just something trendy to say/do, that so-and-so supports an issue. These kinds of things really do matter to real people. Thank you!
julie says
Karen, you look amazing on your picture! I love your and and your makeup! xxx
Karen says
Hi, Julie. Thank you. 🙂 Are you thinking about entering the giveaway? If so, don’t forget to send in your pic (or leave a link to it).
Tekoa says
Breast cancer does not run in my family. I am thankful for that. What I find most interesting is that men can get breast cancer. Spread the word! *ponders about the give away*
I am now married! The week leading up to the wedding was the worst in my life. I felt diffuse fear, panic, shaking and vomiting. I have social anxiety disorder and anticipation before the event was overwhelming. I saw a doctor before the wedding and was perscribed vallium. After that I calmed down and was able to completely enjoy the wedding. I share this story so that other brides will know that weddings can cause unexpected emotions. Sometimes the experience can be unpleasant. I envy brides that sail through the marriage process without anxiety!
Karen says
Yeah, but congratulations, Tekoa! You’re married. 🙂 All of that anxiety and stress — and I DO remember how stressful it can be — it all paid off. CONGRATULATIONS! I did just about all of the planning for my wedding myself, and exhausting doesn’t come remotely close to describing the ordeal.
Tekoa says
I looked at El Hubby and said “We are never getting married again.” Then I told my brother that the courtroom was totally the way to go. Happiest Day of My Life? HA!
*grumbles* Fine. It was worth it.
emily says
I just sent mine in! I know too many people who havve battled or have a family member that battled cancer. My friend’s mother died 5 years ago from stomach cancer and it’s been really for her. Thank you for supporting the cause!
Karen says
You, too, Emily! I really like your sign, BTW.
There haven’t been many entries yet, so your odds of winning the big prize are VERY good for now. Good luck!
Appu says
This is awesome Karen! The e-rally is a beautiful idea.I’ll be sending my entry soon! Enjoy the weekend 🙂
Karen says
Hi, Appu! How are you doing this weekend? What’s the weather like out there? It’s starting to cool down here as we move into fall.
I’m keeping my eyes out for your entry. Talk soon.
Nina says
Awesome promo, awesome pic of you and awesome pic of Tabs! 🙂
Karen says
Hi, Nina. Tabs actually wouldn’t let me publish the post without his picture. He can be such a diva!
BTW, are you going to enter? Send in your pic.
celine says
you’re awesome!
but if got a question; i’m 14 years, but can I also enter this amazing contest?
(ofcourse im having my mums permission)
xoxo celine
Karen says
Hi, celine. No, you’re awesome! It depends on the laws of the country you live in. Are you considered an adult where you live? If not, then (sorry), nope. You wouldn’t be able to enter, but you could always ask your mom to enter for you (make sure you ask very nicely). 🙂
Andrea says
Hi Karen!! i think this is soo sweet what you are doing and i wish you the best. also, non-related to this topic, i have 2 questions.
1) can you PLLLLEEEEEAAAASSSEEEE make a few of your contests for People of ALLL ages, cuz i am only 14 but i really want to enter ur contests!!!
2) could you do a makeup collection post of better yet, a video?
Thankss!! please resspond!!!
love ya!! Andrea
Karen says
Hi, Andrea. Sorry, kiddo, but you have to be what’s referred to as the age of majority in your state/country to enter most contests and giveaways. That means the law has to consider you an adult.
If it’s any consolation, you’ll be an adult before you know it, and then you’ll wish you were a kid again! 🙂
I’ve got some new videos planned. What collections did you have in mind?
I hope you’re having fun this weekend. Tabs says hi.
Andrea says
All right 🙁 yea, i get told that alot. I porobably will but, at least i will be able to enter contests
I meant to type “or” instead of “of”. Like how you store your own personal makeup nad tips and tricks, beacuase my storage now just isnt cutting it!!! 🙂
Tell Tabs I said hi too 🙂
jen. says
Awww. I love this idea! Breast cancer awareness hits close to home for me too- my great-grandma, grandma, grandpa (!), and a few aunts have had it. I think I’ll do a photo and post it on my fb profile for the month (and I will totally steal your idea come April when it’s Autism Awareness Month, which is my other big cause).
Karen says
Gosh, Jen. It’s really hit your family hard. That’s how diabetes is in my husband’s family. Half of the family has it.
Include a comment with a link to your fb profile once you post your sign pic, and I’ll enter you in the giveaway, okay? Hope you’re having a great night.
natalie says
beautiful giveaway! a good friend’s mom was just recently diagnosed with cancer that is now spreading to her heart… so if I win, I will be donating the haul to her so she can wear it on her wedding day. we are all hoping that her mom makes it so she can see her daughter walk down the aisle!!
Karen says
Just to clarify, Natalie. To enter the giveaway, you have to include a link in your comment to a picture of yourself holding a sign like the one I’m holding at the top of this post, or send the picture to me by email to karen@makeupandbeautyblog.com.
Natalie says
Yup, I’ll be sending in a photo tomorrow night 🙂 Thanks again for holding this!
Lucie says
Wish I could participate in this-but I’m under eighteen. No way I could have my mother submit my entry, I suppose?
My father’s gf was diagnosed with breast cancer a few weeks ago-I always thought of it as a disease that couldn’t affect my family, but my eyes have been opened. Everyone is fair game. No one should take risks like not getting a yearly breast check up. There’s just no reason not to, and it could save your life.
Karen says
Hi, Lucie! Your mother can definitely submit the entry, but then she should be in the picture. As long as she is in the picture holding the sign, it would constitute a valid entry (but you can also be in the frame with her). 🙂
Daisy says
Do we have to show our face?
Karen says
Hi, Daisy.
Hmm… Yes, I think that showing your face makes the gesture of support more poignant.I change my mind, Daisy. No, you don’t have to show your face in your entry. I’d like it if you did, but you don’t have to in order to enter. Have a good night! 🙂
lo says
I love this idea so much! As soon as I make a cute little sign, I’ll send it your way 🙂 I think this is so brilliant!
Karen says
I’ll keep a look out for it, lo! Have a good night.
Solangel says
Beautiful idea 🙂
Karen says
Thanks, Solangel. Be sure to send in your sign pic to enter the giveaway.
ShanaT says
Hi Karen! I love this idea! My Great Grandmother, Grandma and Aunt all had breast cancer. I’m only 30 but I get checked every 6 months just to be safe! Thank you for supporting the cause, it means a lot!! I’ll send my pic by email!
Karen says
Hi, ShanaT. Thank you for supporting the cause too. 🙂 Have a great weekend!
pia says
hi Karen,
thank you so much for this campaign.
i was diagnosed with cancer too and still it seems that people cant really cope with someone having this illness.
we need so many more posts and actions like urs, thank you, your lovely.
i sent u a picture :-).
xXx
pia
Karen says
Hi pia,
Thank you for stopping by. I’ll check for your entry right now. I hope your treatment is going well. I agree with you about people (many but not all) not being able to cope with folks who have cancer, and I think it applies to other ailments as well. Guess there are many reasons why, but I think sometimes people just don’t know how to comfort people who are sad or sick, and we get so wrapped up in our own lives that we forget how or even when we should empathize. I know I’m guilty of it sometimes, too.
Hope you’re having a good weekend so far. Tabs says hi.
inaya says
proud of you karen!
Karen says
Hi, inaya. Are you going to enter the giveaway? Send me a pic with your sign, okay?
Anna says
What a wonderful contest idea, I’ll totally join this 🙂
Karen says
Hi, Anna. I’ll keep an eye out for your entry in my email. Be sure to use the same email address you used for your comment here, or come back and leave another comment. At the end of the giveaway, I’ll go through the list and identify the ones tied to actual entries.
Have a good one today. 🙂
Felicia says
That is sooo sweet. Amazing. You are such a kind person, and you have the best blog in the entire world, i mean it – love it so muuuch.
Anyway, i mailed you!
Karen says
Hi, Felicia. Thank you for saying that, but I definitely DO NOT have the best blog in the entire world. Not by a long stretch. Maybe the best blog in my subdivision here in Novato, but maybe not even that, LOL!
Felicia says
You so have. When im down i just look trow your blogposts! You make me laugh and smile 🙂 You are such a sweet person, i really mean it. It is nice when a person is so happy.
MissHikerGirl says
Karen, do you know where I can buy those pink Breast Cancer Awareness bracelets? Thank you!
Karen says
Hi, MissHikerGirl. Lots of places, I think. I haven’t seen them locally, but The Cancer Society sells them for $4.99 plus shipping. The Cancer Society Store
I also saw them for sale on Amazon.com.
Hope you’re having a good weekend so far. 🙂

Hi Karen! Love your blog! I sent you my photo even though I can’t figure out how to turn it the right way since it was taken on my webcam :0(
I’m a breast cancer survivor at the age of 32!! Never ever take your life for granted, and always take time to stop and smell the roses. I can’t begin to explain all of the emotional and physical scars that cancer has left me with, but I am lucky enough to have an amazing family and some really great friends that got me through it.
Ladies: Take 1 minute of your busy lives every month to do your self breast exams, they saved my life and they can save yours. Report anything suspicious to your doc, even if you think it’s nothing!!
Gentlemen: Remind your girlfriend, wives, sisters, mothers and any other females in your circle to do the above if you enjoy their company!!
I come from a long line of survivors (my grandmother, 2 aunts and my mother) and I’m hoping that we can find a cure soon so we can break the cycle before my daughter grows up <3

Hi Karen, I just happened to stumble across your blog when I was doing a search on the diorskin sculpt lifting smoothing concealer and saw this post. I actually volunteer with City of Hope who do a walk for hope every year. I think this is a great way to show support and was wondering if you’ll be posting all the entry pictures on one page somewhere? I’d love to see all the signs people sent in… I’ll be adding mine to the bunch a.s.a.p. 🙂 Thanks again!

Hi Karen,
I posted my sign.
http://vonvonsinterests.blogspot.com/2010/10/photos-october-is-breast-cancer.html
I have always supported this cause since my days in the Uni as a med student. And my aunt was just diagnosed with early stage breast cancer, and just had her op to remove the lump and lymph nodes last week.
Early detection is very important!

I sent my email…
My family has been touched by cancer (not breast cancer). My lovely grandmother, who worked in the fields in Mexico until her death, died of cancer. I can relate to all the women and men who have lost a family member. Find support in your family and friends, strength in numbers.
Love and Strength,
E

Love this cause! And this blog! I sent my entry to your email. Thanks for doing what you do.
Imogen says
Just emailed you my picture! As with most people, I have been touched by breast cancer through my friends and family. I check my breasts at least every month and would encourage everyone to do the same. I found the following link very useful when I realised that I had no idea what to check for! http://www.bbc.co.uk/health/physical_health/conditions/breast_awareness.shtml
I had a lot of fun making my sign, I did it all using make-up – highlighter, lipgloss, tinted primer, concealer, lipstick and eyeliner – and took the picture without wearing any!
Good luck everyone, the winner will be a very lucky girl!

Hi Karen, here is a link to my picture on my blog. This is a great contest and I loved seeing everyone’s signs… Breast Cancer has also hit my family. In a matter of 3 years, two of my Aunts, and my Mom got it. It was a long journey, but they made it, and are all very healthy.
