Tuesday marks a BIG DAY for Americans in more ways than one. Yes, it’s the day our new president takes office, but it’s also the first day of a $175 million nationwide cosmetics giveaway!
The giveaway’s part of a settlement of a class-action lawsuit that alleged there was an agreement among manufacturers and stores not to discount their premium cosmetics.
How much is the giveaway worth to you and are you eligible?
Short answer: $25 in merchandise, and you’re eligible if you sign a document verifying that you purchased cosmetics from one of the defendants between May 29, 1994 and July 16, 2003. Employees of any of the retail or manufacturer defendants and their immediate family are not eligible.
Expect lines at busy cosmetics counters. Some stores are even hiring extra staff to accommodate a possible rush, but it may be worth getting up early for because it’s first-come, first-serve, starting Tuesday and ending Jan. 26 (or while supplies last!).
It comes as no surprise that in the settlement the defendants squirreled out of admitting any wrongdoing… You gotta love litigation.
The list of stores named includes Macy’s, Target, Nordstrom, Bloomingdale’s, Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus and Robinsons-May (for full deets on the defendants and the settlement itself, check out cosmeticssettlement.com).
Customers will have a choice of one free item from brands like Chanel, Lancome, L’Oreal, Estee Lauder, Clinique, Christian Dior, Clarins, Calvin Klein, Guerlain and more.
