I am about the new NARS Under Cover summer 2016 collection and the brand’s first foray into the liquid lipstick market.
Their new Lip Covers are incredible! They’re vibrant and long-lasting like a liquid lipstick, but with none of the dryness and discomfort, so basically exactly what you’d expect from NARS.
I have to admit that I am totally biased when it comes to NARS (here’s another post with my favorite NARS products), but even so, I really do feel these are awesome.
The Under Cover summer 2016 collection includes four of these new Lip Covers, four Dual Intensity Eye Shadows (I LOVE this formula!) and two Dual Intensity Blushes. This post is all about the Lip Covers, but stay tuned for reviews of everything else. For now, I’ll just say that the whole collection is gorgeous. If anything looks irresistably interesting, snatch it up! The collection is limited edition, and the products are available now at the NARS website (and coming soon to other retailers).
So, the Lip Covers — Do Not Disturb, Get Dirty, Members Only and Overheated — I really like this formula, and I hope they add more colors in the future (fingers crossed!).
I think the shades NARS chose to release with the collection are pretty interesting. There are two nude shades (Get Dirty and Overheated) and two red shades (Do Not Disturb and Members Only).
On the one hand, I appreciate that they’re giving us two variations on each color family, especially since it’s so hard to find a good nude, but on the other hand, I want even more variety, because the formula is that great.
Here are swatches of the Lip Covers, and I did these with a heavier hand so that you could see the texture and finish.
They look glossy in the pics, but once they dry down on your lips (which takes just a couple minutes), the finish looks more satin than glossy.
And here’s another shot with different lighting:
I think orangey red Do Not Disturb looks very similar to Maybelline Vivid Matte Liquid Lipstick in Orange Shot (which I reviewed a couple weeks ago).
Nude pink Get Dirty has slightly peachy undertones, and it reminds me of Maybelline Vivid Matte Liquid Lipstick in Nude Flush, but with just a tad more peach.
And then there’s berry red Members Only. Maybelline Vivid Matte Liquid Lipstick in Berry Boost almost passes for a dupe (in terms of color, not formula), except that it’s a little less pink.
Overheated is what I like to call “a dirty nude.” For comparison, it’s much more brown than the Maybelline Vivid Matte Liquid Lipstick in Nude Thrill. It’s closer to Maybelline Truffle Tease and MAC Among the Fireflies.
Despite having colors that are similar to the Maybelline Vivid Matte Liquid Lipstick collection, the NARS Lip Covers feel totally different. These NARS Lip Covers are thinner and feel much more like a traditional lipstick on my lips (the Maybelline liquid lipsticks have more of a mousse-y texture).
The Lip Covers also dry down to a semi-matte finish, whereas the Maybelline liquid lipsticks are more glossy.
And then there’s the scent. These Lip Covers have a very slightly, hardly noticeable floral scent, while the Maybelline liquid lipsticks have a much stronger floral fragrance.
I think NARS totally nailed it with this Lip Cover formula, because these liquid lipsticks are intensely pigmented, long-lasting, and so much more forgiving (and less drying) than most other liquid lipstick formulas.
They aren’t transfer-resistant, though, but they will last through light snacking and drinking.
My only complaint is that I want more colors! But these four are available now for $28.
In case you’re curious about what else I’m wearing in these pics, that’s Giorgio Armani Maestro Glow Foundation in 8 (LOVE how light and glowy this is; I have a full review on my blog) // NARS Sexual Content blush (also from the Under Cover collection. Swatches coming soon!) // Chanel Stylo Eyeshadow in Caroube (Chanel recently released more shades of this formula, and here are swatches and reviews of prior colors) // Marc Jacobs Velvet Noir Major Volume Mascara // Glossier Boy Brow in Black // Boscia White Charcoal Mattifying MakeUp Setting Spray (full review upcoming!).
What do you think? Would you give these a try, or are you over the liquid lipstick trend?

Better late than never right? I am loving the pop theme of the outer packaging. I have never been a gloss girl, yet, mattes have never been my thing. I am kind of over mattes, but the mention of ‘satin’ texture and the color selection is making me turn for a second look.
All the colors are complementing your look. Definitely checking out for myself.
Adia says
Hi Nivedita! I’d say these lip covers are probably just right for you because they’re not super matte, but they’re definitely not glosses! Let me know if you end up trying them!

I’ve been lusting for members only but I’m not made of money! Since I just got 3 mini lipsticks and 2 full size I need to get like something a little brighter for summer and then call it a day.
Adia says
I hear you, Erin!
Madeleine says
The formula of these sounds really nice and I love the look of the shades – they all look gorgeous on you 🙂

Adia says
Thanks, Madeline! The formula is excellent!
Cindy says
You look beautiful. I’m eager for an expanded liquid lipstick collection from Nars. & the packaging is gorgeous.
Adia says
Thank you, Cindy! I hope they expand this line in the future. It’s so good!
RAEANNE MADISON says
I absolutely love these and I’m tempted to get them all. I would have to store them in the packaging; it’s just soooo pretty!
Adia says
Yes! I can’t bring myself to throw away the packaging! And, if you get them all you definitely won’t regret it.
Lulle says
Everything looks gorgeous on your lips! My preference goes to the 2 nudes though, they’re both shades that I could wear easily.
Adia says
The two nudes are so great! Very flattering and versatile.
Aj says
They all look amazing on you! I’m really tempted to buy Get Dirty after seeing it on you.
Adia says
Thanks! Get Dirty may be my favorite because it’s great for everyday, but it’s not boring or too plain.
sarahc says
The nudes are killing me! They’re beautiful. I want them both.
Adia says
I wish I could say you don’t need both…but you do 🙂

Members only looks great.. btw i love ur eye makeup in these pics..
Did u use only chanel caroube and achieved that?? I don’t like glitter in my eyeshadows..
so which one do u think is better for me- chanel caroube or tom ford spice??
Adia says
Thanks Anusha! I only used Chanel Caroube on my eyes. I applied it to my lids and then just blended it out with my fingers. OK, so re: Spice vs. Caroube, they are both super pretty and I have them both. Caroube is more brown and slightly cooler, while Spice has much more gold in it. So it really depends if you want a true brown (like Caroube) or more gold/bronze (like Spice). Both have shimmer, but no glitter at all. Hope this helps 🙂

I’ve got a question about the texture of these. Do they dry down to where they don’t transfer color onto, say a glass? Where your lips feel dry to the touch? I’ve gotten to where that’s the only type of lip color I like and it’s so hard to find that type of formula. If you know of other brands that dry down to a “dry to the touch” feel I’d appreciate the information! This is my first time reading your blog and it’s GREAT! Very informative, interesting and fun. Thanks so much for your help ?
Adia says
HI Dee! These will definitely transfer onto a glass, but since they are so pigmented, the color stays vibrant on your lips for hours even if you are eating and drinking. I wouldn’t say these are exactly dry to the touch. Your lips will feel as if you’re wearing a regular lipstick, so it may not be exactly what you want. Some lipsticks that are more dry to the touch are the ColourPop Ultra Satin lipsticks. This is a newer formula and they totally dry down but they aren’t super drying. I would also recommend you check out the Sephora Collection Lip Stains and the Stila liquid lipsticks because they dry down completely and are not super drying. I hope this helps and thanks so much for checking out my blog 🙂
Dee says
You’re a doll!! Thanks so much for all the great information and suggestions. I’ll check into the lip colors you mentioned.
Take care and thanks again ?
Dee says
Hi Adia!
I had to come back and let you know I received my first Colourpop Ultra Matte Lip color.? Oh my gosh am I thrilled!! This lip color dries down to a completely dry to the touch feel, but is also so incredibly comfortable! The lasting power is some of the best I’ve ever found in any long wearing lip color and the color (Beeper was the first of what I’m sure will be many) is gorgeous. And the $6.00 price makes this an affordable new obsession?
I foolishly started smoking cigarettes in my teens and hated having to reapply lipstick/gloss all day after each cigarette. So I started wearing long wearing lipstick that dries down many years ago. I’m 47 and finally quit smoking (COLD TURKEY!) just over 2 1/2 years ago! But am so use to the texture of this type of lipstick that I can’t go back to traditional lipstick and my sweet husband of almost 20 years loves that he’s never had to deal with lipstick kisses!
I hadn’t heard of Colourpop before and can’t thank you enough for recommending it. I might have to try their brow products too.
Again, thanks so much! Wishing you much continued success on your wonderful blog! I’m sure to be back often to see what other great wisdom you have to pass along.
?, Dee

Thank you Dee! I’m so glad that I have another person obsessed with Colourpop! Their lipsticks are incredible! I’ve been using the brow pencil a lot lately and I really like it. It’s a little softer than Anastasia Beverly Hills but performs really well and is only $5. So glad that I could help 🙂
Chris25 says
All of these look great on you! Members Only is just brilliant.
Adia says
Thank you! It’s such a pretty red 🙂
Becky says
Your LIPS! They are incredible! Anything looks beautiful on you! I’ll definitely be giving these a go though-still on the hunt for a liquid lipstick that doesn’t give me cat-butt lips after 2 hours!!
Adia says
Aw thanks Becky!! and LOL re: cat-butt lips. It’s so hard to find a comfortable liquid lipstick!
Alix says
Dang, is there NO color that doesn’t look good on you???
Adia says
You’re so sweet to say that!
Meiko says
These look beautiful on you, especially the nudes! Will have to go check them out in store
Adia says
Thanks, Meiko! Definitely check them out it stores.
Michaela says
Hi Adia. All those colors look so good on you! Which nude do you think would look better on light skin tones?
Adia says
Hi Michaela! I would say Get Dirty because I think the peach tone is very flattering for lots of skin tones. I hope this helps!
Michou says
Argh, I had hoped swatches would help me select. They all look so amazing on you now I want all four. 😛 I own a TON of neon and bright shades, but no peachy nudes… so I think Get Dirty is the one I’ll be picking up.
Great review!
Adia says
LOL! I think Get Dirty is great because even thought it’s a “nude”, it has enough color so that it’s not boring. Glad you enjoyed the review!
Fancie says
I’m so happy NARS nailed this formula! I love me some liquid lipsticks and NARS so these are a must for me. They all look SO beautiful on you but I’m really loving the nudes. I need them in my life!
Adia says
The nudes are awesome! Def check them out in person ☺️
Ginger G. says
They look pretty! Wouldn’t it be great if they made a liquid lipstick version of their lipgloss ‘orgasm’?? ? I can just imagine….
Adia says
Oh wow, that would be incredible!
