I had a very long, very beauty nerd-seque conversation with a friend a while back about nail polishes with unconventional textures, ala bumps and grit.
I was wearing Zoya’s $9 Pixie Dust in Godiva on my tips at the time, walking around with nails that looked like they’d been dipped in sugar.
New for spring, Godiva’s brimming with fine bits of gritty glitter.
My buddy said the feel of the finish gave her the heebie-jeebies — like clawing a chalkboard or sandpaper — and I can see where she’s coming from. I mean, why purposefully put something lumpy and bumpy on a smooth set of nails?
But then there’s also the question, “Why not?” 🙂
I know it’s not for everyone, but grit can be a good thing, right? Sometimes?
What do you think? Do you like textured nail polishes? Grains, grit, bumps, stickers, raised swirls? Or do they give you the heebie-jeebies?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

Textured nail polishes are everywhere this year!
I’m not really sold on the super gritty sandy ones: not my thing, and they look pretty flat on the nail, IMO.
I’m more into chunky glitters, or the new Nails Inc leather effect that I really want to try!
Karen says
Yeah, they are. Love the chunky glitters, too, but they’re such a pain to remove.
Vish says
I love textured and smooth both
I like wearing the textured nails as accent nails 🙂
Vish says
Oh by d way Karen it’s not so tough to remove glitters if you have a tin foil
Just dip half part of the cotton into a non acetone nail polish remover, wrap it on your nail and cover with a tin foil
After 5 mins the glitter comes off neatly
This trick is available on youtube 🙂

I can’t do it! I honestly think they LOOK really awesome. I mean, fingernails that look like they were dipped in sugar? How girly and fun does that sound?! But the actual texture??? Not happening! I agree with your friend, “heebie jeebies” for sure!

I love the Milani and Jesse’s Girl Cosmetics textured polishes 🙂
Aalia says
These aren’t available in Pakistan yet, but I am loving the look of it, especially in the colour ‘London’. Will have to wait and see on the texture.

I have the OPI Liquid Sand nail polishes from Mariah Carey collaboration, which are basically the same idea as Zoya’s Pixi Dust. I wouldn’t wear it every day but for a change, why not? Zoya is releasing really pretty summer shades of pixi dust too 🙂
Marina(Makeup4all) says
I am not really into “special” effect nail polishes that much but this is amazing!
Kim says
I think these look really cool. They’d probably be a problem for me, though. I think I’d spend a lot of time, unthinkingly, running my fingers over them and end up with sore fingertips. 🙂
Lauren says
Oh! I like this way better than the mint color!! This looks perfect for wearing on its own or on top of other colors. I love the texture it gives!
Sunny says
Haha what a coincidence! I wrote about the first textured polish I’ve tried today (though it is a less textured one, probably a bit more so than Godiva though)!
I thought I’d hate it. I did like how the first textured polishes look, but sometimes companies take it too far and they start reminding me of peeling walls. I do like the amazing shimmery effect, so as long as it’s not too gritty and the color is right, I’m up for some texture!
Anitacska says
I don’t own any textured polish, if I tried them I’d probably want to put a topcoat on them anyway, so what’s the point? I love glitter and wear it often, but the textured ones are not my favourite. I’ll be giving these and the OPI ones, and the Nails Inc leather and whatever else finishes a miss.
LC says
I just can not get into this trend. I don’t care for the texture nor the “sand-y” look.
Kalli says
I don’t personally care for them, although I have to say I like the look of the Zoya polishes better than OPI’s liquid sand line. I could maybe try it for a night, but I usually keep my polish on for several days and I don’t think I could stand the grittiness that long. In the end, I don’t see myself actually purchasing a whole bottle from any line.

Not a fan of textured nails! I like matte polishes, but not sure how I feel about gritty polish. Caviar nails freak me out.
Christine says
I’m on the fence about it. I didn’t like the special effects nails of the caviar/velvet/sequins faze – the caviar texture in particular really gave me the heebie jeebies. However, I’ve been slowly moving my way up from the normal glossy finish to trying out matte nail polishes which I quite like. I do like the effect of these new Zoya polishes, they DO look like sugar wonderlands on your finger tips. Maybe I just need to move slowly and start with very fine textures first. Who knows? Maybe I’ll move to getting more and more textured nail finishes.
Emi at Project Swatch says
I love textured nails so much – I have some of OPI’s Liquid Sands, Zoya’s Pixiedusts, and Milani’s Textured Creams, and I LOVE THEM ALL.
Jennifer says
I don’t like it…
Tennyoceres says
I just picked this up yesterday =D I thought I wouldn’t like it until textured polishes actually touched swatches in the store. The looks is definitely different. If you lay it down right it just looks like matte polish. My husband keeps touching my nails whenever I put on textured polish. He gets sad when I change to ‘normal’ polish LOL
I think the ‘super gritty’ part could only come from putting 5-10 layers on the nail. Three is enough!

Textured nails are not for me, since I crave that smooth nail feeling. I never liked crackle, even. But I love the look on other people. adventurous! I think Godiva would look fantastic layered over a nude polish on tips only-it would really look like dipped in Sugar effect. I think it would be gorgeous! and I have seen some swatches with shiny topcoat over these sand type polishes for a depth and sparkle that is amazing looking.
Karen says
Hi Lorraine,
Putting Godiva on tips sounds like a great idea. I might have to try it with Estee Lauder’s So Vain! 🙂
Tiera says
I don’t mind it at all, I think it’s fun to have something a little different sometimes! The real issue, though, is the mess taking it off!
Kimmwc03 says
I like textured and non-textured nail polish, as long as it doesn’t get too crazy. I wasn’t too sure I’d like the sand polish at first but it doesn’t bother me one bit. I normally do not have any issues removing textured polishes as long as I leave the cotton pad with the remover on for a bit.

Love this! Just commented about the Vespa post and then went and ordered it. Then I saw this post and since this was another one of the colors I said I was lemming, just may have to go make another order! I am hopeless! ;0)
Karen says
Hi Lisa,
Let me know what you think about your polishes. I hope you love them!
Happy (almost) weekend!
Taylor says
I don’t know! I don’t know if I like it, it reminds me of the beach… I adore the beach! Though I might very much dislike it.. I’m really not sure, I will have to look into this further…
Gotham Polish says
I think the textured nail trend is fun. I enjoy feeling my bumpy nails! But most times I’m craving shiny nails 🙂 Soon enough we will have a textured polish in every color! I really hope someone plays with mixing the base color and the sparkle color (similar to the dark OPI with red glitter) – would love to see a dark purple with bright turquoise glitters!
