A few snapshots of my morning. 🙂
I’m trying to get out of a funk, so I started off the day by cooking a good old-fashioned Filipino-style breakfast, OM NOM NOM! An egg over easy, garlic fried rice and fried shrimp — it’s comfort food my mom makes on Sunday mornings.
A typical Filipino breakfast involves 1) eggs (or meat or seafood), 2) tons of garlic and 2) frying anything (AND EVERYTHING) in copious amounts of oil, LOL! I tried to make it a little healthier by using a non-stick pan and an olive oil mist spray from Trader Joe’s to cut calories and lighten things up, but it was still very hearty. I haven’t been eating a lot (just not hungry), and it certainly filled me up.
After breakfast I took some pics of leaves in the rain…
…and then spent way too much time trying to learn the dance from Jordan Knight’s magnum opus, 1999’s Give It To You.
Note to self: Not a good idea to attempt body rolls before 9 in the morning without stretching first. You’re way too old for that sh*z.
But what really cheered me up was the mani I did with Pixi’s new Nail Colour, Classy Cocoa ($8; available now at Target stores and target.com).
It flashes from a deep chocolate to a purply taupe, and from certain angles, a golden shimmer peeks through. Really super cool, and I think it looks like something you’d find over at Chanel or Dior. I can’t believe it’s only $8!
I used three coats, but you could probably get away with two. I just like how the polish looks that much richer with the third coat.
There’s just something about having freshly painted nails that makes me feel so much better, you know? 🙂
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

Pretty nail color!! Also, I’m totally jealous. That breakfast looks super yummy. And actually pretty healthy when you think about it. I had a baked sweet potato with honey-flavored butter for breakfast. Good, but I still would have rather had yours.
Karen says
Your breakfast sounds good, too. YUM!

Your twitter logo cracked me up..way too cool 🙂

When am blue(which happens quite often btw),I cry ..lame I know..sometimes an episode of ‘how I met your mother’ just makes me laugh 🙂 I hope you are feeling fab already !
Karen says
Hey Varsha,
I’ve only seen a few episodes of that show, but they always crack me up! I should remember to ask Tivo to record it for me. 😀
Ankita@corallista says
Fantastic shade for the Fall! Your hands are in such good shape Karen! Do you get a manicure on a regular basis?
Karen says
Hi Ankita,
Aww, thanks girl! Wish I could say that I get manis regularly because they’re so relaxing, but I usually end up doing my own nails nails ’cause it’s easier for me. I do use a lot of hand cream and nail oil though! Big fan of both. 🙂
KhaliaNicole says
You did not just bust out the Jordan Knight video!!! Hahaha! I love it!! I’m pretty sure I DID actually learn that dance after the song came out! NKOTB baby! 😉
Karen says
GURL…I have that single on tape! I used to bump it while I drove around in my Honda Civic, hahaha!
KhaliaNicole says
Hey Karen, quick Q… I’m pretty sure I should already know the answer to this but.. alas, I’ve never actually asked! How do I get my pic to show up in the avatar? Is it a “Gravatar” thing?
Karen says
Hi Khalia,
Yup, it’s a Gravatar thing. I think you have to upload your pic…
Sara says
That is such a pretty color and for only $8!
Your breakfast is making me hungry.
Karen says
Hi Sara,
Yeah, it looks much more expensive than eight bucks. Don’t you just love drugstore gems?
Oh, and the best thing about this breakfast is you can eat it at any hour of the day. 🙂
Kim says
That’s a great color. The only thing your breakfast is missing (for me) is a huge chunk of bread. And an epi-pen. HAHA!
I hope you’re feeling OK but agree that if you’re not feeling hungry, take it as a sign from the weight loss gods and don’t eat. 🙂
Karen says
HAHA! Well, if you ever come to visit I’ll leave out the seafood. I’ll make a note to sub it with a chocolate or Meyer lemon croissant. Sound good?
Kim says
Deal! I’d also be happy with that spare loaf of sourdough. 🙂
Beth says
That shade looks perfect, so fitting for the season! And you’re not alone, I need to dedicate time in the week to do my nails, therapeutic me-time!
Karen says
Hi Beth,
You’re right — it’s a perfect fall color. 🙂
I hope you get to set aside some time to do your nails. What color are you thinking about doing?
Nina says
Ohhhhh your breakfast looks yummmyyy!
Karen says
It was really good! I’m still really stuffed, and I ate it hours ago.
Chelsea says
Very chic color!
I totally remember watching that Jordan Knight video on TRL back in the day, and breakfast looks good! I need to go grocery shopping, it’s slim pickins around here!
Karen says
Oh, I know how that goes. That’s usually when I come up with my weird improv meals, LOL! 🙂
Chelsea says
I ended up with eggs for my pre-class meal, not sure what I’ll end up with for my post-class meal!
Shannon says
wow, what a gorgeous color!! Perfect for fall.
Ana says
Chocolate nail polish? Nom, nom, nom!
gio says
Oh pretty! It’s perfect for this season!
Liz says
Oohh looks similar to a long discontinued Rimmel color I love. Hope it’s still around when my target beauty bag gets in, they usually have a coupon for 50c or 1.00 off a pixi product.
Rachel says
My boyfriend is Filipino and I remember thinking it was strange to have rice with breakfast but it actually tastes good, especially with an egg on top! I know what you mean about doing a manicure to cheer up, I do one every Sunday night because it makes me feel like I can tackle the week!
Katherine G says
I love the color! My fingernails are so short (yes, I’m a nail biter…have tried to stop for years, managed to stop for 2 weeks, broke a nail and went straight back to gnawing on them) that I have only had polish on them a few times in my life. I usually paint my toes. Your breakfast looks delicious! We Italians are garlic lovers too, one of my favorite breakfasts is called Uova in Purgatorio (Eggs in Purgatory/Hell), which is eggs poached in tomato sauce. It’s yummy and full of garlic! You can also add veggies and meat to the sauce, one thing I love about this breaky is that you can keep it simple or really dress it up.
Becca @ The Beauty Sample says
Love the color! I’m a big fan of plummy purples on my nails and something that glimmers between that and taupe is a winner in my book!
BeckBeck says
OMG Jordan Knight… takes me right back to high school! Love it!
Tracy@Beauty Reflections says
That colour is awesome!
And, can you come here and make me breakfast sometime! YUMMMM
jen. says
Ooh, the other day (at Target), I parked next to someone who probably knows that dance! http://instagram.com/p/Q6Z3TFp94m/
Christy says
JOOOOOORRRRRDAAAAAAANNNNN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My pre-teen dream! 😉 He sang that at the concert too (along with The Right Stuff, Rockstar and O-face). You would have loved it! I think have Give it to Me on an old MP3 player somewhere. I’ll have to try and find it.
Rice and eggs for breakfast is awesome, although my favorite Filipino comfort food has to be menudo on some not too sweet pan de sal. My Lolo used to make it with tons of veggies cut up in tiny bits. I wonder how well the flavor would translate if you used tofu instead. (hint hint..more protein! 🙂

My lunch time chuckle for the day! Why do I not remember that song by Jordan Knight? :/ Getting old………
Carrie says
Do you give out your recipe for the garlic fried rice? I love fried rice for breakfast – used to have it all the time back home in Hawaii. (I’m always looking for good Filipino recipes!)
Marla says
That nail polish is so classy. One of the prettier brownish polishes I have seen.
