Hmm… Methinks The New Black is on to something with their ombre nail sets.
The one I’m wearing today is called In Love. It’s one of two new The New Black sets en route to Ulta stores next month in a collaboration with pop singer/former Disney child star Demi Lovato (but they’re both available online now).
I know next to nothing about Demi, but of her music, I’ve liked the stuff I’ve heard on the radio. That song of hers, Heart Attack, always seems to be playing whenever I’m in the car.
It’s catchy stuff! I’ve cranked it up more than once to sing along to the chorus.
Apparently, Demi also likes nail polish (and, really, what girl doesn’t?).
So, what’s The New Black? Well, it’s an up-and-coming nail polish line out of Santa Monica, California. Their products, which aren’t tested on animals, are vegan-friendly and toluene-, formaldehyde-, camphor- and DBP-free.
The sets ($22 each) are basically little nail polish collections, each one with five nail polish minis in coordinating shades.
The idea? To wear all of the colors at once, one shade per nail, to create sort of like an ombre-ish effect across your fingers and/or toes.
They’re like nail art paint by numbers, LOL! Which is great for me, because they take all the guesswork out of figuring out what colors to wear together. There’s even a handy (get it??) picture on the side of the box to make it really easy.
Sorry…bad pun, I know.
Of course, no one’s watching, and you don’t have to follow the suggestion on the box. If you have a different idea, go for it. Even without the whole ombre thing, I think the colors are still cute.
I felt like keeping things simple today (it is Monday, after all), so I followed the pic. I figured, shoot, it’s Monday; today will be hard enough as it is, haha.
As you can see, In Love is all about the purple. Purple lovin’. And it comes with five of them in dark, medium and light purple shades with pearl finishes, as well as a purple foil shade in a clear base and a bottle of loose rhinestones for bling.
I think the colors look great together, and having them all in one set equals convenience. You get the trendy factor associated with nail art without having to strain too many brain cells.
Something I really appreciate.
But all is not unicorns and roses. I do have to baby these a bit…
I can’t really half-@ss it by plopping one or two coats on while my mind wanders down different yellow brick roads/beauty tangents. I have to pay close attention to what I’m doing with these and carefully apply very thin, even strokes.
Because if I don’t, I get pools — as in pools of nail polish, with darker areas on some parts of my nails and lighter areas on others.
These definitely require a little more work than something like OPI’s polishes, which almost couldn’t care less what brush I use to apply ‘em or how haphazardly I go about it.
As for the foil polish, its clear base is pretty thick, so like the pearly shades, I get better results with it when I use thin coats.
Oh, and can I just say how much I enjoy bedazzling my thumb with rhinetones?
Biiiig fan. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve lifted my thumb off the spacebar today to just stare and marvel at it…
I dropped the little stones on my thumbnail one by one with a pair of tweezers when the dark purple polish was still wet (it was actually a lot easier than I thought it would be).
Hopefully the bling is buff enough to withstand the opening of a dozen cans of gravy and a hundred hours of typing this week because I want it to last as long as possible. I’m new to the brand, so I don’t know yet about wear time. I’ll let you know if they start chipping soon.
These sets, though — good idea. Someone needs to invent pre-made sets like this for regular life things, like home decor that take all the guesswork out of it.
Does this rug go with that couch? Will this chair go with the carpet?
Uh…what does the kit say?
Ha! I’d get one for my living room, the bedroom and definitely my office.
The $22 Demi Lovato Collection In Love kit by The New Black is available online now and coming to Ulta stores next month.
