Sometimes it’s good to be naughty, no? The new MAC A Tartan Tale Collection is very naughty, and I couldn’t wait to get naughty, too. The 5 Naughty Little Vices Nail Lacquer ($25.50) set comes with five small bottles of nail polish (four creams and one frost) in shades befitting the collection’s plaid tartan theme.
For starters, these bottles are wee little things (0.09 oz. each), but can you remember the last time you finished a full-size bottle of nail polish? Because I can’t.
Size isn’t what concerned me about these polishes when I first got wind of them (sadly, the fact that they’re from MAC is). I gotta be honest — MAC isn’t my favorite lacquer line. They does MANY things extremely well, but their polishes, at least the ones I’ve tried, tend to chip like crazy on me, with textures I can only describe as inconsistent.
I haven’t worn these particular five long enough to gauge them for chips and wear time, but in terms of color and texture, I’m impressed by all of them save streaky Vintage Vamp, and Beyond Jealous, which seems a little too thick.
The following swatches are two coaters…

Available October 28 in North America at MAC counters and November internationally. 🙂
So what are your thoughts on these and MAC nail polishes in general? Where do you think they rate as far as nail polishes overall?

Karen

What a bummer. Bad Fairy is the first MAC polish I’ve bought in probably 15 years, and the quality is definitely disappointing. I’m glad I skipped the other VV polishes and doubt I’d buy another MAC polish until I start hearing good things.
I wish I still had that old bottle of MAC polish, just for kicks. It was Abstract, which I seem to remember as an opalescent, very light mint color. The bottle was square and the color name was printed directly on the bottom with a dot-matrix printer, like on the bottom of a soda can.

Yes, love that Beyond Jealous colour. Will go for a dupe though, not going to spend that much money if the quality isn’t very good!

I bought Jade Dragon from MAC. It’s a beautiful color, although a bit hard to control. (I’m used to OPI’s wands, and I’m partial to creme formulas.) It stained my hands blue-green when I took it off! They stayed that awful color until I practically washed my hands in nail polish remover.

I’m kind of happy that I can pass on these, plus I’ll be in Vegas for the launch and can’t fit them home in my quart sized carry on. (No baggage fees for this lady!) I tried to pack my quart sized bag last night with the essentials for 6 days in dry Vegas, not an easy task, it’s hard to decide on what I’ll want for lip color, it’s not like a beach vacation, it’s a glamcation!
I just read that lipsticks aren’t considered gels/liquids so I can stuff those in my with suitcase. I’ll try and get by with Russian Red, Gladiola and Morange. Brights lips, bronzed face and hella mascara, best I can do with a quart of makeup!

I like Asiatique shade. I am not a nail polish person so can’t comment much. 😉

Vintage Vamp and Beyond Jealous are gorgeous! Too bad they don’t have a great texture.

Well, those are pretty colours but I’m not really seeing anything very unique. It would be a nice gift for someone who doesn’t have a lot of polish but I wouldn’t buy it for myself.

When I saw the pictures of the bottles I just thought “OMG I need these!” especially Beyond Jealous &Vintage Vamp ,and I’m not really a lacquer fan…but after seeing the swatches… I’m kind of disappointed…. me no likey 🙁

They are OK….I am not sure about them though. Nothing really cathes my eye- and I find that MAC polish peels right off of my nails in about 2 days – so it has to be really special for me to want to buy a polish from MAC. I think that the polish they launched in the Villans collection were soooo much better! I would have liked to see something like that for this lauch…. even a glittery black (which i have been looking for) oh well – maybe next time,

nail polish is one of those things i dont use enough to justify buying expensive ones. 🙂 my tartan tale list is kinda short – 2 pigments, 2 blushes and a bear. 😉

I find MAC nail polishes disappointing. Sometimes they’re too thick, sometimes too thin. But their colours are just so unique and cool. I wish they’d keep the formula consistent. But hey-nail polish isn’t their main thing. I hate it more when a polish company disappoints-cause that is their thing they should be excellent at every time.

yeah, I’ve definitely heard MAC polishes are super quick to chip, and sometimes really streaky. The colors themselves are very nice, but I’d rather play it safe with a polish formula I know is going to be good if I’m spending that much money.

I like the color-per-nail swatch! 🙂 That’s too bad about the streakiness of Vintage Vamp because I do like the color. I think the streaks are my #1 polish-related pet peeve, though.

unfortunately, there’s nothing here that interests me ;(( it seems like i have all these colors from different brands in my collection……

I think they suck compared to Essie, OPI and Orly. Plus they don’t seem to follow the trends at all. And yeah, they chip like crazy, so I just don’t buy them. Have tried a few, mainly because I do like MAC’s general design.
