Oh, Chanel Jade, how you tempt me…
In Sunday’s open thread Beth asked a logical follow-up question to Have you ever finished a bottle of perfume? (two thirds of us have).
She wonders…
Has anyone ever finished a bottle of nail polish? I love nail polish and buy it all the time. But I never finish a bottle before it gets too thick and gloopy. Even my high end ones… I don’t polish constantly, but I do almost always keep it on my toes and at least a few times a month on my nails. Anyway, just curious!
Now that you mention it, Beth, I don’t think I ever have finished a bottle of polish (but I have had to discard a few that gave up the ghost to the gloopy monster). Wow, did I just say that?
There is one shade that I could potentially polish off (ha!) someday — Chanel Jade, released as a limited edition color back in fall 2009.
After a year, I’m about a fourth of the way through the bottle, and I it just as much today as I did the day we met (it was love at first sight).
I can easily see myself getting to the bottom of Jade and shedding a tear crying a river.
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

I’ve only ever finished a couple of bottles of glitter polish as I love it so. GLITTER!!!! Haha.
Melessa says
I’m Melessa W. too lol
kelly says
Hmm I don’t think I have ever finished one! And now that’s pretty much impossible I think, lol!
Ninni says
I have bought myself a thinner, it is very good! You just put a few drops in the polish if it is to thick and then shake. Turns old polishes to new! Also never stroke the brush outside the neck of the polishes. When it dries it makes air come into the bottles. If you get polish outside the neck of the bottle be sure to remove it.
Lilac says
You can save your favourite nailpolishes which have become too thick by adding polish-thinner. Scrangie once posted the secret ;D She at least claims that you can save almost everything. The reason why they become less liquid is the evaporation of some ingredients (through use / opening the bottle), so you can replace these.
On the actual topic, no, I haven’t but that is because I only got into nailpolish a year ago, so most bottles are quite new.
Rica says
I actually finished a bottle of nail polish! But back then I only had a few bottles, so it’s easy to do so. I love that nail polish so much, I wouldn’t change it for a months. Whenever I choose to put on nail polish, I pick that bottle out. Without further ado, that nail polish is… Anna Sui Nail Colour N G80!
I love it so much because it’s not ordinary glitter, it gives a illusion of having 3D nail art <3. I usually wear it by itself, but you can also put it over another nail colour =)
I think they still make this, but there is a cheaper alternative, which is Sephora by OPI in Only Gold For Me Top Coat.

I used to finish the drugstore line ‘Colorama’ nail polish bottles all the time. They were tiny, inexpensive and cute.
Nina says
never ever. ive had to throw out some old ones bec they were all gunky … :/
Rengirl says
So far, I have never used more than half the bottle (which was China Glaze For Audrey). But I have fallen madly in love with Orly Space Cadet and have been using it for every other manicure (which is quite often for me) so if I keep this up, I better try and find a backup bottle (which is not easy – this is very sought after).
lo says
Hahahahahahahaaa… no. I own waaaaay too much to ever finish any.
Suji says
I’ve never finished any.. I keep collecting more and more bottles though! If you invest in a good nail polish thinner – Zoya has one, Seche has one – you never have to throw away an old polish.
Dhini says
Very nice colour
I would love to have them 😀
Michelle says
I’ve finished top coat (well, it got beyond the reach of the brush and then it pretty much solidified so I count that as finished!) but never a coloured polish.
Trisha says
No, not officially. When I was in high school, I used to paint things with the last third of the polish. I painted accents on my bedside table, for instance. But I was a rebel. 😉
Renee says
I did this, too! I loved to “polish” all the telephones in the house…
Kim says
That’s a big NO for me. Even worse than the “goopy” is when you’ve had them so long that they get “greasy” and no amount of rolling the bottles between your hands can ever get them to combine again. Ew.
Eleonora says
Odd as it may seem..I actually did finish a bottle of nail polish.
It was a Chanel one. The very first Chanel nail polish I ever bought. ;D
gio says
I don’t think I have ever finished a bottle of nail polish and I had to throw a few out because they had become gloopy. But I’ve finished top coat and base coat.
Vixxan says
I have never finished a bottle of a nail polish with the exception of my top and base coats. I have never had a bottle of polish get thick and goopy. I have never used a thinner or anything else to thin out my polish. I have nail polish that I purchase 10+ years ago that still have the same consistency they did when I bought them.
Jeanie says
I’ve only finished up top coats, but not an actual color. I’ve come close with maybe 1/3 left of a neutral OPI color I loved years ago when I couldn’t afford to buy too many polishes. These days I love every color of the rainbow and can’t stop buying them!
luv2smilexo says
I havent finished a color but I frequently finish basecoats and topcoats
Rinnie says
I’ve gotten very close with a few bottles before they dry out and become completely useless. I remember the closest to finishing a bottle was in high school with multi-colored glitter polish, I was such a geek that tried to be cool that I constantly put layers upon layers of this glitter polish on to create what I thought was a cool affect. My nails looked and felt heavy with this thick conglomeration of glitter that it cracked off in chunks.
Kayann says
I have but that was in middle school. It was a mother of pearl nail polish. It was lovely. I was 12.
paige says
there’s a dupe of chanel jade (it’s a little darker but it’s still beautiful!) at walmart, the brand name is called petites, #473 tahitian green. i fell in love with it and just can’t get enough! it was only like $2.
Beatrice says
I actually have finished off a bottle of nail polish! I don’t know if this is cheating but It was glow in the dark and to took a lot of coats to get it to work, then all my friends saw it and wanted to try it so I brought it in and they had a field day and then the bottle was gone :’3
I think it’s cheating but oh well lol
Jamie says
The first (and only) nail polish I’ve ever finished was Maybelline’s “Ballet Slippers”. I think it was from their wet shine collection. This varnish had the most amazing color, consistency, and shine! But alas, of course the makeup gods discontinued it 🙁 I have yet to find something comparable, but the search continues!
Jen says
Nope, never. When I was younger, I had a few bottles of nail polish, but I didn’t have steady hands so I didn’t like to paint my nails much. Now that I’m older, I’ve started to collect polishes (along with makeup… my mom hates me for that :P), and I like to keep my toes painted. Still, don’t think I’ll be finishing a bottle any time soon!
I did buy the Sephora by OPI Rocker Chic collection with the four mini bottles. I have Already Famous on my nails, and gawd it’s gorgeous. I might finish that one eventually… who knows?
Diane says
all you need is a few drops of paint thinner/ or acetone!
Taffy says
I finished only one bottle of nail polish in around 25 years. It was a pale, sheer gold shimmer from Revlon (I can’t remember the name) that I bought when I was 17 years old and I only had a couple of polishes. Now I have over 120 bottles and will probably throw something out before I finish it 🙂
HanaBerlin says
120 bottles is a lot, but at the rate i’m buying these puppies I’ll be right up there with you. Right now I’m around 45.
Taffy says
I wish I had your control! 🙂
Megan says
Nope, I don’t think I have!
Kate & Zena says
Yes, numerous numerous times. I’ve finished 2 bottles of Parlez-vous OPI? and 2 bottles of Tickle My Francey. I’m 1/2 through Illamasqua’s Rampage, CG’s Dorothy Who? and a few other colors. I think it comes from polishing my nails weekly. Sometimes, I’m hooked on a color for weeks too. I’m a polish FIEND.
Also, if your polish gets thick and goopy, there’s nothing 1-3 drops of nail polish thinner can’t fix. However, it MUST be nail polish thinner. Not paint thinner, not brush cleaner, not nail polish remover (never, ever do that; it’s a crime against nail polish), nail polish thinner. End of story.
HanaBerlin says
I really never have! Maybe that should be one of my short term goals.
The BB says
Sure have. The one that stands out is L’Oreal’s Soar (a pretty light shimmery purple) and they discontinued the color after I ran out. Sad!
desi says
I’ve finished a bottle of Lincoln Park After Dark, and I’m about halfway through another bottle. It’s my everyday polish for my fingers, and I alternate it on my toes.
Melessa says
wow a whole year and youre bottles still rocking? i dont have the money to buy OPI etc. (though id like to) so that’s a big factor im sure. but still, i have very crappy, weak, thin, brittle, split-prone nails, and recently ive been trying extra hard to grow them out. so ive been polishing pretty frequently ( at least once a week) and sally hansen’s only seem to last me a few months =/ lame
Jellytea says
I’ve finished a bottle or two but I have also never had to throw a bottle away. I store mine in the fridge in a clear, covered shoe box and they never go bad. I just pulled old South Seas collection OPI out and let it sit in some hot water. Just like new, what after 3 years.
Alice says
I agree on the polish thinner trick — it really works, and it saved tens of bottles of polish for me…
I finished a lot of bottles anyway, because I can’t stand chipped polish, and since putting on nail polish relaxes me a lot, I change it every 3 or 4 days. And I put it on my friends too 😀
Steph K says
I’ve never finished a bottle of nailpolish, so I have a HUGE stash of half-used bottles. It makes me hesitant to buy new bottles. Then my old ones get all watery or gunky but because I have a big pile, I feel like I MUST use them anyway before I can buy new ones. It’s not a good system.
Beth says
Steph, that’s me! I have so much that I can hardly justify to buy more even though I still want to.
Andrea H says
I’ve finished bottles of top coat a couple of times (i’m a polish junkie 🙁 but my nails never seem to get yellow so i guess its meant to be! lol) but i don’t think that really counts as really finishing polish… i’m dying to try Jade though!!
Erin says
I have never finished a bottle ever. I have mixed colors when I notice that some are getting low. I see way too many great colors out there that I have to try, so I am constantly filling up my Rubbermaid box that I bought over 10 years ago!
saku says
I think I have. In high school I used to have those tiny tiny bottles that came in sets. Most of them had glitter in it, so I used them a lot. Gosh I wish I can find Jade, that’s such a nice green.
Christy says
I’ve gotten close. Like down to half way 😉 But otherwise, I usually end up throwing it out before it finally does get to that point.
Alison says
I have finished a few bottles of Essie Mademoiselle, it’s my HG my nails but better shade and although I have hundreds of bottles of polish (over 50 of which are Chanel including the gorgeous Jade) I wear it probably 90% of the time. When it starts to get gloopy I just add a few drops of thinner to restore it.
Beth says
Sounds like I need to run get some nail polish thinner – STAT! I don’t know why I never thought of it before.
I bought the mini-OPI Swiss collection, I’m going to see how the mini bottles do for me! I don’t mind running out, actually, I would feel better if I did!
claudia says
I’ve come close! I get the nail polish down to a level where the brush doesn’t reach, although there is technically some polish left.
amy says
I finished a few bottles when I was in elementary school and high school but I have very little nail polishes back then. They were Wet n Wild and Cutex brands.
Cora says
A tip: keep your nail polish bottles in the fridge, this way they don’t get thick and last a very long time. Some of mine are 5-6 years old and they are perfect. 🙂
Casey says
OPI Moon Over Mumbai – I used that polish almost everyday for months.
marisol says
Nope never finished a bottle but thrown some away.
You have to keep talking about Jade, don’t cha? 🙂
