Wicked, the musical inspired by The Wizard of Oz, holds a special place in my heart, and not just because of the cool beats (“Popular! You’re gonna be pop-u-lar!”) or the killer stage makeup (hello, green skin) or ’cause I was lucky enough to see it 10 years ago at SF’s Curran Theater before it headed east to Broadway.
Nope, Wicked will forever be engraved in my mind as the show I was watching when I accidentally fell down the stairs in the theater, exposing my naughty bits to a whole mess of strangers.
It all started with my decision to wear 4-inch heels…
One flowing skirt and a misguided step later, and before I knew it, I was tumbling down a flight of bizarrely steep stairs, my skirt raising and lifting in unfortunate directions.
Yeah…let me put it this way: that night the mezzanine got a special kind of show. 🙂 Thankfully, I was wearing non-ratty underwear.
If you also have fun, fond memories of the show, are just a fan of all things Oz, or love pink and green polishes and/or witches, you might find Deborah Lippmann’s new three-piece Wicked Collection ($29) bewitching.
Deborah, herself a fan of the show, made the set of three minis in honor of Wicked’s 10th anniversary this month, and like a perfect three-part harmony, the colors play off one another beautifully.
Shimmery pink Popular was inspired by Glinda, one of the star witches in the show. Its color matches the dress Glinda wears while she sings the song of the same name.
I love Popular’s brightness and late ’80s vibe (I think I wore something just like it to the eighth grade dance, haha!), but I wish I didn’t need three coats for full opacity.
More pigment, please.
Elphaba’s green epidermis sparked Defying Gravity, which I find super pretty. Plus, I only need two coats!
With creamy greens, you often run the risk of nails that end up looking like baby poo, but not in this case. Something about it reminds me of jade jewelry…
In the show, Elphaba and Glinda journey to The Emerald City, which leads us to One Short Day, a glittering emerald jelly. This one, I like mostly for its texture. The various green and blue glitter shapes give it a theatrical quality.
Not for polish wallflowers, to be sure. Also, as with Defying Gravity, I’m happy with two coats, which deliver full opacity.
I feel like the two green shades are the strongest colors in this set. The pink? Just okay, but I do like how it complements the other colors.
Wouldn’t this be a great gift for the musical theater nerds in your life?! I bet you have at least one friend (other than me) who spontaneously bursts into song. 🙂

These are awesome! I agree, the greens are the best.
I haven’t seen the musical, but I did read the book it’s based off of, and it was great!

Hard to believe that Wicked is 10! Pretty set. One short Day is my fave. Just took the plunge to buy a LIppmann mini set- Starlight Glitter, and am wondering, about how many manis do you get from the mini bottles? and is the teensy brush tough to work with? Thanks.
Karen says
Hi Lorraine,
I’ve yet to finish one of the minis…they do last a long time. As for the brush, I usually do okay with them. In a way I like that they’re smaller — more precise, you know?

I was just looking at this set in sephora! I passed on it, but I think I’ll grab it during the VIB sale next month. These look so pretty!

Ahhhh! Love this set, because I LOVE the musical – this is now on my wishlist. Karen, I’m sorry it’s engraved in your mind for other reasons – thankfully you’ll probably never see those people again! Ariana Grande and Mika have a cute new version for “Popular” that is supposed to be on the 10th Anniversary Edition of the Wicked Soundtrack =)

Wow! These colors are perfect for Wicked! They did a great job with this collection. I remember crying my eyes out at the ending, I’m such a sucker for musicals haha. Wish the bottles were bigger for that price…

Ha! I also saw Wicked in SF, but it was after it went to Broadway and was touring around the US. Loved it! Still need to read the book! These polishes might be a good gift for a theatre-nerd coworker!

Very cool colors and I loved Wicked, too. I laughed out loud because one of my boys came home from school (on a music class day) and was singing “Flying Rabbity”. Once I figured out what it was from (my goodness, that sounds familiar) it took me literally hours to get him to accept that it was Defying Gravity. We still laugh about it when someone gets the words to a song wrong. We are all like “um, is it like flying rabbity?” 🙂
