The long-running Unsung Heroes series here on Makeup and Beauty Blog features some of our all-time favorite permanent collection products.
I’ve got dry lips.
Like, Sonoran Desert dry.
Many have tried to figure out why, I assure you, and many have failed. Between the overall dryness of my skin, to its tendency to eczema and how my lips aggravatingly seem to need to really get in the mood for our six-month winter here in the arctic tundra that is Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, my lips are wrinkled and peeling for way more of the year than I’d like.
I’ve gone through favorite lip balms like Taylor Swift goes through boyfriends. (Too soon? Sorry, T, just shake it off.)
I repeatedly feel like I’ve found “the one” and love it for weeks — months, even — and go through a whole slew of backups only to see my lips eventually reject the formula seemingly out of the freaking blue. It drives me nuts. What I don’t do is write songs about it… Maybe Taylor can help me with that?
Anyway, when Maybelline released their main Baby Lips line a few years ago, I tried one of the original tinted formulation balms and wasn’t that impressed. It looked great, but because of my lips, it felt like the balm itself was just sitting on top of my dry lips, rather than sinking in and really making a difference.
So I gave them a pass until I noticed a new product in the Baby Lips fam called Baby Lips Dr. Rescue, which I spotted while getting some much needed “mommy alone time” running errands. I grabbed the clear balm and applied it immediately in the car.
*queue angels singing*
It felt INCREDIBLE.
I honestly feel like I should have pictured these with a cape, because BOY are they unsung heroes. They’re unsung heroes in my own makeup arsenal, but I don’t hear anywhere near as many people talking about how freaking fantastic they are as I’d expect. If you want a feeling of instant relief when your lips are chapped, the Maybelline Baby Lips Dr. Rescue formulation is for you.
I use the clear balm (not pictured) when my lips are drier than a California raisin and I desperately want to wear lipstick, but I always carry around a tinted balm — 55 Coral Crave and 40 Pink Me Up are my favorites — in my purse.
Pink Me Up is my go-to balm. It hydrates my lips, giving them a nice plump appearance, soothes almost immediately and has the sweetest wearable baby pink hue when applied.
Just look at that pink! The best part is that I don’t feel like I’m missing out on color when my lips are really dry.
I love lipstick and tinted glosses, and when my lips are acting up I miss the pigmentation that other products provide. Fortunately, the tinted Baby Lips Dr. Rescue balms help me fill that void. For that reason, I’ve been going steady with these unsung heroes since they were launched, and I don’t think I’ll be singing “we are never ever ever getting back together” any time soon… I cannot be without at least one and always have a backup nearby!
Do we share an unsung hero? Please tell me you dry-lipped ladies have tried Maybelline’s Baby Lips Dr. Rescue? If not, they’re less than $4 each (at Target, Ulta and drugstores), so go snag one and report back, stat!

I use the NUXE Rêve de Miel lip balm whenever my lips are dry, but I would love to hear the lip balm song.
Jessica Revitte says
Oh I know. So excited NUXE started selling Reve de Miel at Target, it’s so much easier to get now! I’m horrible at singing, maybe Taylor will consider singing for us? 🙂

HAHA! 😀
I tried the original formula when it first launched and didn’t like it AT ALL, so I’ve never thought of giving the newer releases a chance really… But now you got me very intrigued with these!
Jessica Revitte says
I definitely recommend the Dr Rescue version, the formula is like night and day. Couldn’t believe how different they are!

I’m a Fresh and Burts Bee’s all the way.

I have quite a few of the regular formula, but I haven’t tried the Dr. Rescue ones yet. The pink on in your picture looks like a lovely one to try out.
Jessica Revitte says
It’s an insanely nice subtle pink for such an affordable, medicated balm. 🙂

Ooh, that color looks lovely on you! I’m impressed with the pigmentation.

I’d want to try these, but the original Baby Lips did not agree with me at all, they even made my lips more chapped. Are they a lot different from the original?
Jessica Revitte says
I couldn’t believe HOW different this formula is from the original. The first rendition didn’t agree with my lips at all either.

Hi Jessica! I love this post! I too have dry, sensitive skin. I am eczema and acne prone as well, so I understand how frustrating it feels to be unable to find an effective lip balm! I felt like I tried every lip balm under the sun. Used EOS for a year but then all of a sudden reacted to it! (Used to be my fave!) I also react to SPF in lip balms. And a lot of the drugstore formulas are cheap, only lasts for like 15 minutes!
I’ve never tried baby lips because I was afraid the colour would make my lips more irritated instead of moisturized. However, after reading your post, I may try it one day!
Right now, I really like Blistex Lip Medex. It’s medicated, effective, lasts a few hours even when I’m drinking water throughout the day. Comes in a tub or a tube, so highly recommend it if you haven’t tried it. It’s also sold in a lot of stores and pretty cheap!
Look forward to reading more of your posts!
Jessica Revitte says
Hey lady! Thank you. 🙂 I’m going to have to give Blistex Lip Medex a try. Blistex discontinued my favorite lip balm of all time so it’s taken me a long time to recover from that.

My lips are terribly dry as well, Dior rose balm has been really helping this winter, but I’ll definitely check this out, looks great to throw into purses!

I have been using Fusion XL lipgloss for at least 15!!!!! years. I slather it on heavily every night at bedtime. My lips never peel or crack anymore. It is pricey ($50.) but I usually get on Skin Store or Derm Store (or one of those types as they usually are offering some type of promotion like $50 off $200 and I buy in bulk) so I don’t ever pay full price. If they ever discontinue this, I will be lost. It has a nice taste too – fresh, minty – like Buxom glosses. I

No way?! I’m going to have to look into this.

I haven’t tried this formula of baby lips because the original baby lips made my lips more dry and chapped.
I will give this a try, especially if I can get some color with my lip balm.
FYI – I have crazy dry lips that also develop a reaction to different lip products, so I rarely can use lipstick or lipgloss. Thank goodness, I found CORTIBALM on amazon and have been using it for the past few years and I order the 3 packs to keep one at home, office and my purse at all times. It is seriously THE most amazing balm for my lips!
Jessica Revitte says
I’ll have to give it a go. I’m always looking for something new to try. Homeoplasmine from the French pharmacy is also a miracle worker if you’re looking for something to try from Amazon. 🙂

Like you, I love that Nuxe is available @ Target too! I haven’t tried any of the Baby Lips options but that pink looks nice especially heading into Spring. I always have Aquaphor on hand to layer over any other balms if they are extremely dry! It provides a good occlusive topper.
