I need to go on vacay so I have a really good reason to stuff these juicy makeup bags to the brim.
These fruity cuties are by Trina, and I spotted ’em the other day at Ulta.
They are…
- The Trina Sun Daze Floral Wristlet ($20)
- Trina Sun Daze Floral Pencil Case ($12)
- Trina Sun Daze Valet ($25)
- Trina Sun Daze Double Zip Train Case ($30)
Aren’t they cute?
Vacation, all I ever wanted…
OK, so I think I figured out what to do about the whole birthday celebration.
Get the heck out of dodge!
El Hub and I are going to see if we can swing a trip to New Orleans next month because 1) I’d like to go someplace I’ve never been, 2) I’ve always wanted to see New Orleans, and 3) I’d effing love to eat a real-deal beignet for breakfast on my birthday.
I’m a little concerned, though, because I’ve read some alarming stories online about the city’s crime rate and about tourists being targeted. Is anyone out there reading this from New Orleans? Am I being a nervous Nellie? Because I do have worrywart tendencies…
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

Ah, so you’re taking a vacation – that’s fantastic!
I need to try a beignet soon! I remember you posted about it a while ago, and you had me drooling even then!

Have to admit I have to talk myself out of picking up new makeup bags every single time i go to Target or Ulta, what can I say I love a good bag of any kind.
Married a born and raised New Orleanian, been living down here for bout the past 8 years. New Orleans is like any other big city out there, Im sure there’s con men out in San Francisco too.
1. Always be aware of your surroundings.
2. Get a good crossbody small purse if you absolutely must take one, I always leave mine in the trunk of the car and rock jeans.
3. Only been scammed once when we went downtown to do a few engagement pics before our wedding (dressed up), as a result yeah we were targeted by a few slick ones. If anyone tells you or your husband, “Hey I bet I can tell you where you got dem shoes?” Just say no thank you and move on, cause they will expect money and most folks only have $20’s on them (like us).
4. Don’t go stumbling back to your hotel drunk at 3 a.m. Seems to be a running theme when I watch the news
5. Leave your heavy creams at home cause it’s gonna be hot AND humid here. I always encourage folks to come in the spring or fall, lot less humid (this coming from a woman who mistakenly had her wedding in late May)

As long as you’re not in New Orleans during a crazy busy time (like Mardi Gras) I think you’ll be just fine. Just use your regular city smarts and you’ll have a great time!

These makeup bags look really cute! I really like the Valet one and only $25?? I will check them out next time I am at Ulta (which is pretty much every week!).
I have never been to New Orleans so I don’t have any advice for you but vacation always sounds good!

I think you’ll love New Orleans! (Just keep your eye out for flying roaches at Cafe du Monde!). 🙂 My parents were just there a couple of months ago and had a nice time. They didn’t have any issues with crime but they weren’t out on Bourbon Street until the wee hours, either. All in all, I’d say you’d be totally fine. And one more bit of advice, if you do a cherry bomb shot, be near a garbage because you might want to spit it up. HAHA!

Oh my GOSH I am in love!! These cases are beautiful!!!
And you should TOTALLY go to New Orleans, Karen!! I’ve never been, but have lots of friends who go there every now and again. I’m dying to check it out. In terms of travel/safety, I don’t think you need to be too worried. I’d say just be smart and vigilant about your belongings while you’re out, act like you belong there (cuz if you’re confident/comfortable, I feel like you have a lower likelihood of getting hassled), and don’t do anything that you wouldn’t do at home, especially if it seems sketch!

Hi! I’m from New Orleans…born and raised and still living here! Just be smart…don’t walk around alone at night on an empty street. Don’t walk while staring at your cell phone. Our crime rate is high, but it’s mostly domestic violence or drug related. If you’re in the French Quarter and a fight breaks out, don’t stand there and watch. Just walk away. Bourbon at night is gross anyway…go in the afternoon or early evening lol. Explore Uptown, Garden District (pretty houses), Business District, and the Bywater. Magazine Street is a great street to walk down…tons of cute shops and restaurants. Hit up Frenchmen street at night for free live jazz music. All you’re really gonna do in New Orleans is eat…walk…eat some more…walk it off again. It is EXTREMELY hot and HUMID here. Wear light clothes and bring good walking shoes. I wouldn’t walk around in flip flops, but tennis shoes might be too hot. If you’re renting a car, you could stop by the other Cafe du Monde on the way to/from the airport. It’s on Veterans Blvd. and there’s no crowds. There’s also one in the outlet downtown, but the outlet itself sucks so I never go there. You should def hit up the original Cafe du Monde though at least once. Also, you will sometimes see a long line…tourists always line up, but really you just spot an empty table and sit down. If it’s full, look for people who are about to leave and go stand near their table. The servers don’t seat you and there’s no hostess. The locals know this, but I always see the tourists line up and waste time. Hope this helps! Feel free to e-mail me for more suggestions!

I’m a Gemini turning 40 right near your big day! You will enjoy New Orleans.. just be aware as in any city environs. Cafe Du Monde get VERY busy – but the line for tables move faster than takeout (don’t ask how we know). We went twice in 1 trip for those beignets! We were there for a friend’s 40th. Lots of fun – glad you will get away for your bday! I am as well – going up to ME for a spa getaway!

Cute bags! I’ve actually been wanting to order a few online from Sephora. They don’t hold a ton but say things like, “I won’t cry for you. My mascara is too expensive.” How perfect is that! They’re great for carrying around on the daily (if you have a big enough purse, I suppose). I’ve never been to NOLA but it’s definitely on my to do list for the food alone. I’ve heard somethings about the crime rate but I think you’ll be fine. I’ve got friends there & they love it. In fact, I’ve also heard that the crime rate has decreased over the years.

You will LOVE New Orleans. Hubby and I were there at Christmas. (we left from port on a cruise) We spent 3 days eating our way through the French quarter and riding the Trolley through the garden district. New Orleans is just like any city. Stay out of back alleys and don’t do Bourbon st late at night. If you wanna hear great local jazz, Frenchman St is the place to go. This was our second visit and it’s one of my favorite places EVAH! Just remember to wear comfy shoes for walking and stretchy pants for eating, because you WILL eat until your face falls off! Just a hint, parking is kinda expensive so be sure you put aside parking money. Ooo and one more thing, make sure you ride through the garden district, it is a really beautiful.

New Orleans sounds great. I wouldn’t be to worried about crime, just don’t take to much money with you to the streets.

Happy upcoming birthday! I agree with the people on this board, definitely go to New Orleans, don’t fret overly much but keep your “city smarts” with you (also agree with avoiding dark alleys at night and avoiding Bourbon Street at night). So many great places to eat (both upscale and very casual) and so many beautiful places to see. Make sure you ride on the cable car (great way to travel around the city when you’re not in a hurry). Also, 25 cent martinis for lunch at Commander’s Palace — which also is one of the oldest, most respected and nicest restaurants in New Orleans. So excited for you!!
