Last week was our first big storm of the season, so I reluctantly gave my winter gear top billing — my winter boots, sweaters, my winter coats and, yes, my winter bronzers.
Yup, I have winter bronzers, because even though I have my natural tan, my skin color still changes with the seasons. When I don’t get as much sun in fall and winter, I get a little lighter, and it gets to where my summer bronzers look jarring and too dark — like I contoured but didn’t bother to blend.
So I usually put them aside for the season when something like a big storm happens, and it reminds me that summer is long gone, but this year I’m keeping them out because I’m gonna use them as eyeshadows.
You’ve probably seen someone do this before — use a bronzer as eyeshadow. I’ve definitely seen it on YouTube a few times, but it might be a different way to look at it if you use different bronzers in different seasons.
A summer bronzer can be a terrific transition color because…you already know that it’s a brown that works well for your skin. Sure, it might be a little too dark for your cheeks in the middle of winter, but that makes it an even better crease color to wear with darker winter and fall eyeshadows. Because it’s not covering a large area, it won’t look jarring. 😉
The final countdown…
Man, I read so many countdown articles last month about how to prepare for Thanksgiving and all of the things you should do in week four, week three, week two and week one, but none of it actually happened. I’m still scrambling at the last minute.
I know this is all unimportant stuff in the greater scheme of things, but my dining room table has a computer on it, and the room is like a forest of photography light stands. There’s hardly any food in the house (I’m drinking coffee with just a little sugar in it because I ran out of milk), and my guests arrive tomorrow.
*big sigh*
At some point today, I’m gonna need to get at least a few groceries, and I also want to go to Marshall’s to get a serving platter…
I don’t even know how I made it this far without a serving platter. This is the exact same feeling I had when I realized that I didn’t have a potato peeler.
Oh, yeah, and I also need to clean the bathroom.
YAY! FUN!
Chances are you’re more organized than I am and have all of your stuff together, right? Like your meals prepped and your house clean? If you have any wisdom to share in terms of getting a lot of cleaning done in very little time, please let me know. I need help.
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

I actually tried this out while playing around with my makeup stash last night! Nars laguna and mac coppertone look great on the eyes
Karen says
Hey Jenna,
NARS Laguna is a classic! What colors did you pair them with? I love finding combos during makeup experiments. 🙂
jenna says
I paired it with some of the berry/cranberry shades in the modern renaissance palette, with mac coppertone in the crease. Such a great look for this time of year 🙂
Karen says
Oh, those colors go perfect with Coppertone. I need to wear a cranberry look soon. I just did blue today, so maybe I’ll do it tomorrow because I’m trying to do things outside my usual brown/beige comfort zone. 🙂 Really though the best time to play is at night! It’s so relaxing.
Hope you had a good day and happy early Thanksgiving!

You made me smile, that sounds so much like me 🙂
Order those groceries delivered. Let the store put it on a platter for you.
Ask the guest you’re most comfortable with to come early and help you with the last-minute stuff.
Try throwing the clutter under the bed and closing the bedroom door. Or insist on putting everyone’s coats on the bed yourself, so no one else has to go in there. There’s only so much you can do in a limited amount of time!
Or try leaving the photography stuff up, so you can take pictures as everyone arrives, then enlist their help to get it cleared away.
Hard to get a cleaning service at the last minute, but even a couple of hours to to the bathroom and other big stuff could be helpful — check online, but don’t spend too much time searching.
I’m sure more ideas will come to me… I’m the queen of the last possible moment!
Karen says
FRAN! I just tucked away Connor’s baby gym (the one she’s too big for that now takes up precious floor space) into the my bedroom closet to hide it, LOL! Now if only I had five more empty closets to hide stuff, LOL!
Good idea to keep the photography items out; maybe I’ll just leave out the video lights and everything and have the guests record messages for Connor. 😀
What are you doing for T-Day this year? Are ya hosting?
Fran says
It sounds like you’ve got everything under control, Karen — I like the idea of having people record messages for Connor!
I’m lucky this year; my son and I are having our own little feast at home on Thursday, then we take a couple of things to the big bash at our friends’ house on Saturday. So I do have to do some food shopping today… we divide the cooking, and make some items the day before, so nothing gets overwhelming. For the big bash, my son got the vegetarian main dish assignment (I think he’s going to do vegetable lasagna), and I volunteered apple pie (a project, but one I do a couple of times a year anyway) and the cranberry sauce (three ingredients, ten minutes in the microwave, stick it in the frig — easy!). I don’t eat meat, and my son doesn’t like turkey, so on Thursday we’re having marinated lobster tails (me), macaroni and cheese made with applewood smoked cheddar (him), slow-cooked greens (him), and cranberry relish (me), and spiced apple cider (one of us). Not sure about dessert yet, since the apple pie is slated for Saturday and there’s already a ton of fruit, between the cranberry relish (with orange, apple, and pecans) and hot apple cider. I may make it easy on myself and just do tapioca pudding! Easier than creme brulee, and the same creamy goodness, right?

I feel like bronzers are too warm for my lids, but I can see this working for other people.
Lisa says
Just wipe down the top surfaces and hand them the baby. They’ll be too busy to inspect. And no one will care!
Shannon says
I’m modestly prepared for the holiday, but that’s mostly because:
1) our guests aren’t staying with us (they’re renting an AirBnB in the ‘hood) so we didn’t have to get things sparklingly clean, and
2) we’re not doing a whole-hog turkey dinner, so that simplifies the menu. Plus we’re eating with gastronomes, so we’re all going shopping together tomorrow – so that helps with prep, too!
Rachel R. says
Most bronzers are too dark for me, so whenever I get them in face palettes, I repurpose them as eye crease shadows.
Erin says
I do this quite often!
LindaLibraLoca says
I like to do that in the summer, when I have a bronzer in my everyday stash, because I am usually too lazy to get out my transition shades. Sadly my everyday makeup space is limited, so I guess my bronzers will hibernate with the coral lipsticks in the basement.
