“To raise new questions, new possibilities, to regard old problems from a new angle, requires creative imagination and marks real advance in science beauty”. — Albert Einstein
Sorry, Bertie, I hope you’re not turning in your grave. But, you know, your quote can totally apply to any field — including beauty.
You really were a genius, after all…
Yes, because regarding problems from new angles is a great way to go, I think. If you’re stuck seeing things from a single point of view, you’ll never grow nor improve and, most importantly, you’ll never solve your most troublesome makeup problems (HA!), like:
- Does applying eyeliner to your waterline bother you?
- Do your filled in brows look like illustrations in a coloring book (that is, like a solid block of color)?
- When you apply lip liner all over your lips, does it feel scratchy and uncomfortable? And does it look uneven?
If you answered yes to any of the above, today’s your lucky day, because we’re about to solve your problems!
YOU JUST NEED TO CHANGE YOUR ANGLE. *Cue heavenly choir and rays of glorious sunlight.*
More specifically, you need to change the angle of your pencil. Next time you do your makeup and you’re using a pencil product, try angling it so that you’re using the side of the tip, rather than the point.
It’ll be life-changing, I promise.
Let me know if you just had one of those epic AHA moments, or if this was something you’ve been doing all along!

I actually haven’t done this so far, but I will next time I put on makeup.

Let me know how it goes!

Definitely will try the eyebrow pencil tip. I have nearly black eyebrows and very pale skin. It can get scary FAST, LOL. Thanks!
Carolina Braina says
Haha, I completely understand! 😉
MonicaP says
I’ll have to try your eye liner tip as every time I try to line my water line .. my eyes water like crazy .. 😛
Monica.
Carolina Braina says
I really hope it works for you!

I’ve used the side of lip pencils to fill in my lips for some time. I’ve never tried that with my brow pencils though. I never ever line my waterline.
Carolina Braina says
It’s the only way I can fill in my lips without scratching them off!
Lauren says
I love this post!! You had me at “Bertie!!” Ha ha! Yes to all three of your questions…changing my angle tomorrow!
Carolina Braina says
YAY, I hope it’ll be life-changing! 😉

Being a painter, I guess I instinctively just do these things. There’s nothing worse than holding a brush like a pencil….especially right at the ferrule. Makes me cringe. NO!! just… NO!!
I can’t line my waterline though, my contact lenses do NOT like it at all.
Carolina Braina says
I just thought about it and realized I never hold my makeup brushes at the ferrule… PHEW!!!
Erin says
I’ve been doing this for years, but that probably has to do with having an artist mother I’d watch paint, sketch, and crayon for hours. I do all that too, so I guess I just intuitively use makeup the same way.
Carolina Braina says
Putting on makeup is very much like painting your face, so it makes perfect sense.
TravelingBlush says
I do this with my brushes, trying this way or that to see what jt’s best for. Myrecent discovery is using a dense fan brush (I use Ecotools) for shading.
Carolina Braina says
Experimenting is something I really enjoy about makeup!
Kiss & Make-up says
I never really thought about it but I actually do this already. Hurrah!
Carolina Braina says
I’ve always done that instinctively, but I’ve seen so many people in real life and on YT do the opposite that I thought it was worth a post.
Rachel says
I do this already, but I’m from a family of painters and artists, so that’s to ably where I picked it up!
Carolina Braina says
It makes perfect sense. It’s so cool you’re from a family of artists!
Chris25 says
I love tips like this. Simple but ingenious!
Carolina Braina says
I’m glad you found them helpful!
Michou says
This tip changed the way I felt about makeup. I’ll never remember who told it to me when I was much younger but the second I learned it suddenly makeup became so much EASIER. I always recommend this tip those who have trouble applying…. never thought to do it with lipliner though. Old habits die hard haha.
Carolina Braina says
You should try it with lip liner, too. It makes all the difference!
Illy Junus says
great tips, but for the waterline, i never use it since i always cry because my eyes so sensitive
Carolina Braina says
My eyes tolerate liner pretty well, it’s eyeshadow they don’t get along with. If the tiniest particle gets into them, they start watering like crazy.
