I peered into my dusty closet this morning because tomorrow night I’m going out for the first time in a billion years! I very quickly realized that the tiny sub-section that had, at one time in my life, been reserved for “going out clothes,” has disappeared.
Poof!
I don’t know when it disappeared or where it went, but it’s gone. So I don’t know what I’m going to wear, which appears to be a recurring theme in my life these days…
My friends Naaman, Cindy and I are getting together tomorrow night to go out dancing, which we used to do together all the time back in the day (we even took hip-hop dance classes together). Most of the time it was to some little hole-in-the-wall place that played really good music, and we’d dance our butts off for hours and just sweat. It. Out.
It was like our version of SoulCycle before SoulCycle was a thing, except with a $5 cover charge and free glasses of water at the bar.
I never wore anything too fancy or scandalous. I usually wore cargo pants (cringes) or Adidas track pants — basically, baggy pants, a tank top and a pair of shell-toe shoes.
So, like one of the background dancers in this Mariah Carey video…
I wish I knew where all those cargo pants went… They’re gone, baby, gone! I half-jokingly texted the crew to say that I’d probably end up wearing what I wear to spin class, but now that I think about it…black high-waisted leggings and my Prince tee sound like a legit option.
Maybe if I add hoops, my “weekend errands” Sauncony tennies and a faux-leather jacket, I can make it look purposeful? I dunno… I’m really NOT that concerned, but it’s just funny to me that I used to have a part of my closet dedicated to Saturday night adventures, and now I have a section dedicated to black and gray tops that conceal cat fur well.
As for the makeup…girl, you know I got that covered. ? Because I expect to be sweating for hours, and the room will be dark, I’m not even gonna put in that much effort. Just sweat-proof versions of the basics.
- Brows — MAC Brow Sculpt and Benefit clear brow gel
- Waterproof mascara — MAC In Extra Dimension waterproof
- Black liquid liner — Tom Ford, obvs
- Lips — Maybe also a bright liquid lipstick (hot pink?) because I’ve been itching to wear To Matte With Love (one of the MAC Retro Mattes), but I may just go with MAC Relentlessly Red because it’s one of my faves, and I don’t wear it enough.
- Skin — I’ll probably just do a little MAC Pro Longwear under my eyes, but that’s it… Eh, maybe also some Face and Body. We’ll see. I know that both can withstand legit sweat situations.
I can’t wait! I’m looking forward it. 🙂 We’re going to this place I’ve never been called Public Works in SF, and the theme of the evening is Classic Hop Hop Night, where a DJ will be playing hip-hop hits from 1979-1999 (I know, so specific), so it should be fun.
Hey, you know, if I can just show up NOT in pajamas, it’ll be a major accomplishment, LOL!
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

Love that Mimi video. Yay, have a blast dancing! I haven’t been in forever. There’s really no place to go around here other than the Holiday Inn.

I was thinking what does she mean she hasn’t gone out in ages? I’ve read about you going out with El Hubs and going to brunch and out to dinner and that all sounds like going out to me. You mean you haven’t gone clubbing in ages! The last time I went to a club I was a sophomore in college. Haven’t been since and I lived in NYC in the era of Studio 54. God I’m old. It just wasn’t my thing.
The makeup sounds perfect. I hope you and your friends have a blast!
I’m going out today, too. Just to the SF MoMA and then out for an early dinner or aperitivo with Dear Husband, then home to watch the Warriors game. I’m prayin’ for a win tonight!
My life is positively geriatric in comparison with yours!

Can’t wait to hear how it went.
Also you and your friends are so energetic. The only thing I do with my girls is happy hour or shopping.
Have fun!

Oh, wow, I used to go dancing with my friends, too. It was WAY fun and much better than going to any old gym. Sounds like a GREAT night out!! Have fun!

How did it go? I bet it was a lot of fun, no matter what you were wearing. These days I have a space for office clothes, but no more for going out clothes.

Oh my goodness Ms Karen I hope you had FUN!!! I danced my way completely through my 30’s… and I loved every minute of it. It’s the one thing that I feel I can actually do well. I felt the excitement — and I have SO been there myself, but those days are long gone. I grew up in the 60’s – disco and all the way to Prince and Madonna. How lucky am I??? I live for music.
Hope the outfit rocked, and you sweated your head off! So glad you have those kinds of gal pals. They’re hard to find these days.
Party on Dude!!!

Hey, we went out dancing on Saturday night, too! 🙂 It’s our Memorial Day tradition (used to be called Bender Weekend because we’d all overserve ourselves and dance and act foolish until the wee hours, on Friday, Saturday and Sunday). Now that we’re older and wiser, it’s much more tame and only on Saturday night. I was the driver this year so I enjoyed watching the shenanigans. HAHA! It’s definitely not clubbing, though. In our little town, it’s a couple of live bands playing cover songs that are mainly rock. 🙂 I hope you had as good a time as we did!!! Dress code for us is just shorts, t shirts and sneakers. So, like every other day, thankfully. My “going out” clothes used to include flannel shirts to be tied around the waist. Ah, the 90s. 🙂
