What’s the Most Unusual Lipgloss You Own?

Published in: Just For Fun, MAC Makeup

“I myself am strange and unusual.” — Lydia Deitz, Beetlejuice

Okay, I’ve been seeing a lot of weird lipgloss colors lately (and I like it!).

Take MAC, for instance. Their two most recent collections, Alice + Olivia and In The Groove (both launch on Thursday), have a couple of totally outside-the-box shades.

I.Want.Candy., a bright yellow Dazzleglass Creme gloss ($18) from Alice + Olivia looks like an ’80s neon dream! I’ve heard it looks great on top of matte reds (turns them into shimmery corals), but I haven’t tried it yet. Certainly is unusual, though, isn’t it?

And then there’s You’ve Got It, from MAC In The Groove. It’s a silvery grayish Cremesheen Glass ($18).

Um, gray? For lips?

Both colors are kinda strange, but I think the most unusual ones I have are Tokidoki Prisma Lipgloss in SANDy (a sheer apple green) and JK Jemma Kidd Plumping Gloss in Angelina.

Aren’t they weird??

What’s the most unusual lipgloss you own, and what does it look like?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

P.S. Happy hump day! 🙂

I don’t own any weird lipglosses but those are very interesting!

  2. Kate says:

MAC’s Commet Blue, but not sure if that qualifies as weird.

  3. Deb says:

Hmm…I’m having a really hard time thinking of any glosses right now! I do have a frosty, ice blue lipstick that makes me look like I have frostbite, though! It’s from Victoria’s Secret, purchased years ago when I went through a goth phase. Blue is so much more interesting than basic black!

This makes me want to try I.Want.Candy!

I own like EVERY colour a gloss can have, my fave is from Japan, a black with pink sparkles in a container that has the shape of a lolita.

  5. lily says:

I don’t really have any super weird ones. but I have this mood lipstick(only cost me 50 cents!) that goes on clear and turns into a super bright fuschia/pink color Lol. I’ve never worn it outside my house though.
but the MAC I want candy one looks really nice!

Back in the sixties, we didn’t have much in the way of glosses, but most of us had a white lipstick and a green one. Blue was also available, but it wasn’t as popular. I loved my green lipstick because it toned down any color that was overly bright for my OOTD. Pink a bit too “hot”? No problem! One swipe of my trusty green lipstick transformed it into a soft mocha pink.

I haven’t tried any unusual glosses, but now that I remember my green lipstick, I think I’ll go and check out a couple 🙂

      Hi Eileen,

That’s so cool. Have lipsticks changed much since the 60s? Have you noticed a big difference in terms of texture, pigmentation, wear time, etc? I’m so curious…

      • Eileen says:

Althought we had a lot of beautiful colors, most lipsticks were one dimensional and there wasn’t much choice in texture. They also tended to be a bit greasy and heavy. They only lasted a couple of hours which is why in movies from that time, you’ll often see the woman whip out her compact and lipstick (while at the table no less) and freshen her lipstick. Oh how I love lipsticks now-a-days! And glosses–wow! The choices are endless. For many years, the only gloss we had was a red goo that came in a little pot. It went on clear and was really quite beautiful. It was made by Max Factor and was used primarily in movies and television. We’ve come a long way, baby, and I love it. <3

  7. Sanya says:

    Hi Karen!

First, I don’t own any kooky lipglosses– yet! But I think I might at least give the bright green a try. 🙂

Also, I watched your MBB video and I have to say, your production and style is great! Can I offer a small suggestion though? I noticed your most relaxed on camera when you’re telling a story from memory… have you ever tried having someone in the room with you (if you don’t already) when you’re filming. If you have someone stand just behind the camera and look at them while you’re talking, rather than at the camera, the viewer will actually end up watching you have a conversation (about the product) with that person, and in turn your voice, stance and body language will all come across as very natural and conversational.

Anyway, this is just my 2 cents because I think your videos are so great and you’re such a pleasure to watch. All the best!

    • Karen says:

      Hi Sanya,

Thank you so much for the feedback! I’m always looking for ways to get better, so I really appreciate it.

BTW, I popped over to your site and can I just say your artwork is AMAZING? You’re very talented.

      • Sanya says:

Hehe, thanks Karen– I appreciate the compliment! Likewise, you’re quite the writer!

        • Karen says:

If I was ever a character in a comic I’d love to look like one of your illustrations. For reals!!

How long have you been doing it? And how did you get started?

          • Sanya says:

Heh, just let me know and I’d be happy to draw you. 🙂

As for how long I’ve been doing this, well I’d say 3 years part time, and 1 year full time now– it’s a challenge but awesome! As for how I got started, I did a lot of odd art jobs to get my name out there and slowly things that I really wanted to do started coming to me– I’ve been really blessed! 😀

How did you get started blogging? 😀

  8. Jane says:

I love the look of that Jemma Kidd blue one and must try it! I have the Benefit California Kissin’ blue sparkly lip gloss. Apparently the blue tint helps to make teeth look whiter, plus it is very minty to freshen breath. I love it! Its quite sheer so it doesn’t wear as true blue thank goodness.

Not so much weird as cool is the Smashbox O-Plump colour changing plumping gloss. I’ve seen it look anywhere from fuschia to coral on different people. I love it! Nice dose of easy colour.

Eileen your post made me think of the Tangee colour changing lipstick for some reason- remember that one 😀

    • Karen says:

      Hi Jane,

Smashbox O-Plump is VERY cool. Have you tried the O-Glow cheek color? It’s pretty neat, too.

    • Eileen says:

LOL Oh, yes! I remember Tangee. It turned a deep fuchsia on me that was not very flattering as I have rather thin lips. Smashbox O does the same thing.

  9. Jen says:

I had a lipgloss from UD called Heatherette. I don’t think it was meant to be “unusual”, but I really didn’t like the color. It was a sort of bronze-y taupe color that looked so weird on my lips. It also smelled funky so I threw it away.

After that, I have Benefit’s Kiss You(?), the fuchsia colored one (I just had to look up how to spell fuchsia!). That’s about as unusual as it gets. I’ve been eyeing out the green one from tokidoki though!

  10. kim Porter says:

I ordered you’ve got it from MAC. I’m waiting to see what it looks like on me. I don’t have weird colored glosses but I do have the OCC lip tars in RX (blue) and their yellow one. I also have black & white l/s too

  11. Bekaloves says:

The weirdist color I have would have to be Tokidoki’s nija dog (the sheer blue one). It’s actaully great – it makes whatever color you put it over just a tad darker and it’s great alone. I love it 🙂

  12. gio says:

I don’t own any weird glosses but I wanna try some unusuaò shades. They seem interesting.
.-= gio’s last blog post… QOTW- Do you prefer to wear lipgloss alone or over lipstick =-.

  13. Trisha says:

Whoa. Yellow, Green, Blue? Nope, I don;t have anything like that. In those terms, I guess none of my lip gloss is weird. 😛

  14. Tania says:

I have a Covergirl Amazemint Lipgloss that’s blue in the tube but goes on clear. The blue makes your teeth whiter. Love it!

  15. Nina says:

I dont have it yet but I ordered Youve Got that. Cant wait! 🙂

  16. Marina says:

I’ve got 2 blue glosses but they’re quite sheer with blue/teal shimmer. Look beautiful on the lips 🙂 I don’t really think they’re weird. The weirdest ones i’ve seen must be the grey and black Illamasqua glosses but i don’t have the guts to wear anything like that and i only buy stuff i can wear 🙂

  17. G says:

I have this old Chanel one that is a frosty icey blue & I have a compact from Chanel that has yellow & blue – Cool.

  18. Amber says:

I don’t do unusual. I can hardly bring myself to wear red lipstick, though I have been making progress on that. 🙂 My most unusual gloss for *me* is my UD XXX Shine in X (discontinued). In the tube it looks like a neon coral, but it goes on sheer and pretty.
    .-= Amber’s last blog post… My assistant =-.

  19. Jennifer says:

Mac Stringbean is my weirdest – it looks neon green-ish in the tube – but it really looks pretty nice on – just has a lot of uber sparkle so sometimes I feel like I’m getting a little too old for it.

  20. Haley says:

I have a teal one with blue sparkles from Too Faced. Yeah… No, doesn’t work for me. Sits in my drawer!

  21. Kailey says:

i have a jordanna lipgloss it’s a crazy neon-y blue color. i got it wayyy back in elementary school but i still have it in case i need it haha.

  22. lexi says:

I think once upon a time I had MAC’s Lustregloss in Sweet Pea. I liked it for a second.

LOVE the Beetlejuice quote!! I totally dressed like Lydia Dietz in the 9th grade!

  23. Catherine says:

Somewhat sadly, a purple reflects blue Smashbox gloss, lol – not that unique at all (and it was a freebie with a recent jewelry order, not even something I bought myself!). I do totally love the look of “I.Want.Candy” though!
.-= Catherine’s last blog post… Back with June Favorites- =-.

  24. Nina says:

It is “Nice to be Nice” (?) from MAC’s Hello Kitty collection and it’s orange. And I love it! It’s a shimmery bright orange and on a crazy day, I paired it with an orange Shiseido automatic lip pencil and spent a whole day wearing that combo. In my opinion, it was worth the experiment 😀 And I soooo want that green Tokidoki gloss. Yes.

  25. Phyrra says:

Maybe my Fyrinnae lip products in an aqua blue (Anesthesia), a turquoise (Ryunome), or a deep blackened purple with teal reflects (Candy Decadence). They’re unusual and lovely 🙂

  26. Sara says:

I have the same tokidoki lip gloss colour as you do (sandy) which I used for halloween one year! I put a black lipstick, with that colour on top and it looked STELLAR. I have sooo many things from tokidoki, because my best friends father has shares in the company and is the owners partner. My bestie is so flooded with make up, she now gives a steady flow of it to me! (: hehe

  27. I have MAC Blackfire glimmerglass whcih is black in the tube but goes to just darken your natural lipcolor. MAC Liberated is bright yellow and it makes your mouth a pretty glow as well.
    .-= scarlettholly’s last blog post… Summer Lip Favorites Part 4 =-.

  28. Deathica says:

I have this in gunshine – It looks like black glittery gloss in the tube but it actually comes out rather nicely. Its gives your lips a darker hue with a touch of glitter but definitely not black! Could be mistaken for a tube of mascara or something!

  29. Carrie says:

once upon a time it was mac tux de luxe which was a sheer black with multicolor glitter but showed up plummy when you put it on. it’s long gone though.

  30. K says:

My mom stuffed my stocking with some breath-freshening lipgloss that’s a creamy beige. Very minty, and it stays on well!

  31. KC says:

My only unusual lipgloss would be a birthday gift from a couple of years ago, yes I still have it even though I know all about the whole “how long you should keep your make up for”. It’s Lancome’s Juicy Tubes in Icy Pop, it’s a light blue gloss. I LOVE it! the smell, the texture and how it has these subtle blue sparkles! And my friends thought I was out of my mind when I told them I wanted it!

  32. Sandra says:

    Spring bean!

It gives a nice honey colour to your lips.

  33. amy says:

It would be MAC I.Want.Candy Dazzleglass Creme from the Alice + Olivia colleciton. I have been wearing this for the past week and I like it best layered over MAC Pink Cabana and Lollipop Loving Lipsticks. The chartreuse colour makes corals and pinks more nude peachy. It looks very cool on it’s own too.
.-= amy’s last blog post… Would You Wear Chartreuse Lipgloss LOTD MAC Alice Olivia I Want Candy Dazzleglass Creme =-.

  34. Amanda says:

I have a yellow-more gold (an older dazzleglass, don’t know the name right), blue (benefit california kissin’), green shimmer (mac-more a tinted lipbalm, in the pot? It was LE several years ago), and grey shimmer (kat von D gunmetal). Also I have tthe bobbi brown black pearl, which I think is pretty unusual, especially for BB!

  35. Denise says:

Well, I do own a black glimmerglass from Style Black (Blackfire), but I don’t really consider it weird since it goes on nearly clear; it just darkens whatever lipstick you have on.

Oh, but if this counts, I have a ton of OCC Liptars, with colors like yellow, orange, blue, green, etc. Though I guess technically they are there for mixing…

  36. Miss Kitty says:

one of my favourite glosses is my weirdest! it’s an inglot gloss which is shee milky white with stunning blue duochrome in the tube, but on lips it transformes into a cool purple with blue sheen. it’s actually so good on it’s own!
.-= Miss Kitty’s last blog post… Im sorry- Im sorry- =-.

  37. CynthiaCC says:

philosophy Pear Cobbler, from their christmas collection. it’s a squeeze tube gloss and not too pigmented, but it is definitely green. mostly it just adds a nice cool shimmer to the lips, although it does look strange in the tube.

  38. Jenn says:

I want to try MAC’s “spring bean” lustre glass. Anyone own that one? It’s always sold out at my mac store!

  39. Leah says:

It is Tux De-luxe by far. I love love this gloss it was a sheer black gloss with multicolored glitter in it i had about forty tubes of this keep in the frig on the last tube. I wish they would bring it back it is still the gloss that be ask what is that your wearing.
