MAC Viva Glam V Lipstick
I was digging through my MAC favorites this morning when I remembered a question asked by reader Sheila Z in the comments yesterday.
“Karen, I’ll be getting my makeup done this saturday at MAC for my brother-in-law’s engagement party. Part of the process requires that I buy at least 5 items. What are the top 5 you recommend?”
— Sheila Z
Hey Sheila,
Pardon me for this, but right now I feel Ready For The World! “Oh, oh, oh, oh, Sheila!”
(Please tell me you’re familiar with that song.)
With that out of the way, let’s get back to beauty. 🙂 You’re going to have such a blast at the MAC counter on Saturday. For what it’s worth, here are my five (current) MAC must-haves.
-
217 Blending Brush ($22.50)
I wield this multi-tasking goat hair fiber brush Every. Single. Day. It has its way with both cream and powder products, and I use it for everything from loose pigments to under-eye concealer.
-
Fluidline in Blacktrack ($15)
This black gel liner stays put no matter what! I’ve shed a million tears with this stuff on, and it doesn’t budge for nothin’.
-
Pro Longwear Concealer ($16.50)
I really fancy this miracle working liquid concealer. Not only does it cover my dark circles well with its water-resistant formula, but it lasts all day long without fading, too. My one caveat? — it has a tricky pump.
-
Soft Brown Eyeshadow ($14.50)
If you like the look of browns with orange undertones, this matte shadow could be your new best friend. I wear it in the crease with smokey looks to give my eyes depth and dimension.
-
Viva Glam V Lipstick ($14.50)
LOVE this shimmery neutral pink! I think it looks great on almost everyone, and 100% of the proceeds go to support men, women and children living with HIV/AIDS.
I also asked the gals on Twitter what their MAC must-haves are, and here’s what they had to say:
I hope this helps, Sheila! Have a great time at the party!
Ladies, how about you? What are your top five MAC must-haves?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen
P.S. I know this is off topic, but how cute is this animation from Chanel? This is what my makeup dreams look like.
Arianne says
Oh my gosh, I’m horrible. How did I not mention Viva Glam V in my top 5? It’s one of those lipsticks that I’m sure I’ll keep buying for the rest of my life.
karo says
1. MAC mineralize skinfinish natural medium plus
2.MAC Fluidline “blitz&glitz”
3.MAC blush in MARGIN
4.MAC Dazzeleglass “baby sparks”
5.MAC 224 brush
Karen says
Totally love Blitz & Glitz. It needs to get more love!
karo says
I love this one too!!! it`s really great!
and…
I really really really like you channel!!
You are AMAZIG!!!
Best regards from Germany!!
See you soon ;)))))))
Ashley says
Blanc type eyeshadow (I wear it every day, kind of as a base for other shadows or as is), See Sheer Lipstick (such a pretty coral pink on me), Green Gel Cleanser, Lipgele in Glosspitality (which I can’t find anymore), and the 228 brush. LOVE! I had to edit my list severely.
Morgan says
Viva Glam V lipstick
Fix +
Brule Eyeshadow
Wedge Eyeshadow
Dainty Mineralize blush
Tracy says
217 Blending Brush
Omega Shadow-my brow powder
Grain Shadow–love this colour
Feline Eye Khol
Prism Blush
So hard to just pick five!
Phyrra says
MAC Blush in Full Fuchsia
MAC Mineralize SkinFinish Natural in Medium Dark
MAC Pigment in Fairylite
MAC eyeshadow in Copperplate
MAC Lipsticks (can’t pick just one but my favorites are Fusion Pink, Show Orchid, Girl About Town, Shy Girl, Hot Tahiti, and Sweet Thing)
Kris Cameron says
187 brush for foundation application.
Fluidline in either blacktrack or dipdown depending on skin tone
viva glam I for red lips
viva glam V
224 for crease
The brushes are expensive. But they are so good. I think you could find a good crease brush outside of MAC but I feel like the 187 is non negotiable.
I could have listed at least 5 other must haves and I only started buying MAC cosmetics in 2010. It’s an addictive line of cruelty free, good quality, fun, not super expensive makeup.
Vanessa says
Happy Tuesday! My top five are below:
1. Mineralize Skinfinish Natural. I Don’t know what I would do without this amazing powder.
2. Pretty Plush Plushglass. A perfect neutral pink without sparkles that goes with everything.
3. Well Dressed blush. This creates a glowy pink cheek that I love with smokey eyes.
4. Mulch eyeshadow. A perfect shimmery brown for daytime smokey eyes.
5. Equality lipstick. This was a limited edition nude that I bought two of because it never washes me out and creates a perfect soft lip look.
I can’t believe they made it 5 items now, I remember when it was 3!
Karen says
Happy Tuesday to you, Vanessa! 🙂
Great call on the Mulch eyeshadow.
Advah says
Great topic, very interesting to read the answers! I’ve got two eyeshadows by MAC but I don’t really use them. I find them so pigmented they look veeery messy when I try to do something with them..
I love my MAC pressed powder though.
Karen says
Hi Advah,
What colors do you have? Also, what brush are you using? The type of eye brush you use to apply can change how much shadow you lay down on the lid.
Advah says
Ah that might be the problem – I mainly use a plain fluffy Sephora brush (“all over” or something) and one of those flat brushes. I end up with eyeshadow everywhere.
I’ve been given a couple of palettes with colours that are easier to wear (greens, golds, purples), but the two colours I really like are Girlie and Scene. I should probably get a crease brush!
Sylvie says
189 brush (it’s a very good powder brush)
217 brush
239 brush
MSF Natural
Lip Conditioner with SPF15 (the jar form)
Karen says
Good call on the 239. That’s another brush great workhorse brush.
Stephanie says
Fix+
Pink Cabana Lipstick
Brush Cleanser
Coppertone Blush
Brule eyeshadow
Karen says
Great list, Stephanie!
Amber says
Karen, no Nymphette in your top 5?! 😀
Here are mine, somewhat generalized since everyone’s skintone is different:
-Viva Glam V
-a nude shadow (mine is Mylar)
-a crease color (mine is Cork)
-a brow color (mine is Coquette)
-a sorta-nude lipglass (still loving Devilishly Stylish, wish I had bought five more)
I think a lot of stuff like liner and mascara is easily matched or outperformed by other, potentially cheaper brands.
Karen says
Hmm. It should probably be in there… let’s just call the list an ever-evolving one!
candace grubbs says
i thought i replied on twitter i cant remember lol
heres mine
1.ruby woo lipstick
2. eyeshadow in burle
3. studio finish concealer NC20
4. russian red lipstick
5. eyebrow brush 266

Ithfifi says
Wonderful post!
217 brush
187 brush
Shroom eye shadow
Blotting powder pressed in medium
Tinted lip conditioner in gentle coral
Karen says
Shroom is awesome. It was one of my MAC firsts — been wearing is since 2003!
The girl in the yellow shoes says
1. #217 blending brush!- I totally love this brush for blending out my eyeshadow, and even applying any cream eyeshadows!
2. Powerpoint eye pencil in engraved- I line my waterline, and tightline with this eyeliner EVERY day and I absolutely love it!!
3. Studio fix powder- I love this powder, not as a foundation but as a setting powder!
4. #239 eye shader brush- This is an all around great brush!
5. Eyeshadow in Cosmic- this is special editon but it the perfect gold eyeshadow!
Kerry says
Since I only own one MAC product (Viva Glam Cyndi), I don’t have a top five. I do have a wishlist, though. I thought the longwear concealer would be on it, but since I’m so happy with my $3 E.L.F. concealer, I don’t feel that I need it.
My wish list:
1. creme cup lipstick
2. 217 brush
3. Well-Dressed blush
4. Brule or Vanilla eyeshadow (Ok, so that’s two…)
5. Club eyeshadow
Jadyn says
I have creme cup lipstick and I love it!!!! You’ll enjoy it a lot! I recommend a champagne-y gloss over it to amp up the look. I use devilishly stylish. I wish I’d bought like eight more…

1 – blush in Melba
1- eyeshadow in Espresso for my brows
3 – 217 blending brush
4 – feline eye kohl
5 – eyeshadow in expensive pink for a quick wash of color
Wendy says
– 208 brush (great for brows and really detailed liner)
– Amber Lights e/s (only the most perfect bronzey gold ever)
– Any pearlglide liners (I know these aren’t permanent, but they really are must haves!)
– Studio Fix Powder (great foundation for those that like coverage but don’t like messing with liquids)
– Woodwinked e/s (pairs great with Amber Lights!)
Kim says
I might have some favorites if I ever got my lazy bum to the MAC store! 🙂
I loved the Chanel animation, btw. Especially the spider. Though the character at the end reminded me of you – must have been the stylish model vibe and the hat!
Anna says
1. Face and body foundation (in N1 in my case)
2. 263
3. 217
3. Blush (brit wit in my case)
4. Lipstick Dubbonet
5. Liquid last liner in black
Wait… Five already? What about shroom, satin taupe, teal and violet pigments, rubenesque and background paint pots? What about my beloved Chinz and Cyber? And Brew, from the smoke collection, of which I wish I had bought three? And emote blush from the same collection and…
Oh, I give up.
kana says
This is such a good question! The only thing i can recommend to anyone is their blotting powder. I love it! It doesn’t layer on thick at all and doesnt give me that powdery look.(cake face?) i throw it on my bf too and he doesn’t seem to mind it. 😛 I have to try out that viva lipgloss. i love pink on my lips. !! 🙂
courtney says
viva glam lipstick
viva glam lipglass
cream colour base in pearl
partial to pink lip glass
blotting powder in medium!
Gilby says
1. MAC Fix Plus. This is the one item that all makeup users need at arms length. It’s perfect to set loose powder or any powder foundations. It cuts that powder edge off powder to make the loose powder/foundation look like flawless skin.
2. MAC Embark Eyeshadow. This is a must have shadow that belongs in any Pro Palette. I like to call it the shadow that goes from Mild to Wild. Push this shadow at the base of the lash line for a soft liner. You can wet a liner brush and this shadow can give you that stylish cat eye. Turn some heads with Embark and pack on over the entire lid to for a to die for smokey eye. (Blend in MAC eyeshadow Texture in the Crease to soften) 😉
3. MAC Fluid Line in Dig Down. This is awesome for the times when black is a little to dramatic. Also, this is the best to draw eyebrows on instead of a pencil or shadow. Stays on way longer.
4. MAC Mineralize Skin Finish in Dark or Deep Dark. My go to bronzer and contour. I love this product because it doesn’t have shimmer in it. It have a soft finish to it that makes blending easier.
5. MAC Lip Pencil in Subculture. Brown Nude Pinkish Color that just lovely. I like to fill the entire lip with this lip pencil and add a little gloss.
Karen says
I second Subculture. LOVE IT! I do the same thing exact same thing when I want an easy nude lip. 🙂
And thanks for the Dig Down rec. I don’t have that one yet.
*jen says
Wait… what? Is this actually straight up? Are you serious, MAC requires you to get at least 5 things in exchange for a makeover? SINCE WHEN?
babyu21 says
My MAC must have list consists of:
1. MSF Dark
2. Blush Raizin
3. Mineral Blush Lovejoy
4. Eyeshadow Sketch
5. Lipliner Cork
As far as lipsticks and lip glosses I find drugstore brands work just as well for half the price so I often just look online to find a good dupe. MAC Blushes are the business as far I am concerned.
Monica says
My top 5:
– 242 brush
– Fix+
– Pro Longwear Foundation in NC 15
– Club eyeshadow
– Love Nectar lipglass
i have a lot more “must haves” but pared it down to five, haha.
Marian says
1. 217 brush
2. 239 brush
3. Painterly paint pot
4.Fix+
5. Lipstick
Lisa S. says
1. Smoke and Diamonds e/s,
I cherish this so much and use it so sparingly! I was happy to see it in the “Look in A Box – Girl Next Door” travel set and am hoping to score this just so I can have a back up.
2. Soft Dazzle – Dazzle glass creme
This is just a great soft, color on me. The sparkles aren’t crazy and just work.
3.Technakohl in Photogravure
Looooove this! I’ve recently decided I’m a skinny liner person and the tecknakohls are the bomb-diggity. This color especially, so great when I need something that isn’t as bold as black, but has more punch than dark brown.
4.Prep and Prime finishing powder
My face just looks so much better with this.
5. Viva Glam VI (LS and Gloss)
This color works well for me when I need something with a
bit more punch, but it never shouts. The gloss is just perfect also.
Viva Glam V doesn’t work well for me, It looks like I have spackle the exact same color of my lips on. The Faire Glen l/s from Tarten Tale is much better as far a nude colors go for me.
sarah says
im just getting into mac so my top 5 seems to lack credibility but here goes:
1. MSF natural
2. Cherish lipstick
3. Springsheen blush
4. studio finish concealer
5. honesty or all that glitters eyeshadow
Gina says
The 187 duo fibre brush, 239 shadow brush, High Tea lipstick, Nymphette lipglass, and Swimming eyeshadow. I love MAC brushes, and pretty much any of their lipsticks with a lustre finish. They make girls with dry lips like myself very happy =]
shontay says
Karen, you look stunning in this pic.
Here are my must-haves. I’m NC45/50 for reference:
109 face brush (for flawless foundation application. Mine hardly ever sheds!)
239 eyeshadow brush (I apply all shadow with this)
217 blending brush (flawless blending! Hello!)
Honeyflower lipstick (for relaxed days. Why was this discontinued???!)
Violetta lipstick (for bold color. So sexy, you can have not another stitch of makeup on and be fierce)
Rachael says
All that glitters eye shadow
219 liner brush
fluid line in blitz and glitz
Studio Fix Mascara
224 blending brush
Sheila Z says
Thank you, Karen – can’t wait to check out the products. Really appreciate your post and advice!
Rengirl says
Am I the only one who doesn’t own any MAC?
Milka says
Possibly ! Oh Rengirl, you are missing out. You must go and get you some MAC love at once! 😉
Rengirl says
I’ve owned Mac before… it was the first high end brand I tried and I liked it enough. I guess I moved onto other brands since then and, honestly, I’m too lazy to go to a store that carries only the one brand.

2- Prep and prime powder
3- Naked lunch eye shadow – works in so so so many looks
4- Partial to Pink Creamsheen gloss – can lean pink or coral depending on the rest of my look
5- Macroviolet fluidline – just love the purple shimmer liner
steph b says
Heh – already second guessing myself. I’m going to swap my beloved 239 brush for the Creamsheen glass. I use the brush every single day.
Erica says
I really haven’t tried a ton of MAC products, but I really like these: Mineralzed skinfinish Natural, Viva Glam Cyndi lipglass, Tempting eyeshadow, 219 brush, 187 brush.
Ok there are some more products that I like, but I guess those are my “top 5”
Oh and I really like that Chanel animation as well! Makes me want to buy something from them right now, haha!
meimei says
I am seconding, thirding, and 100th-ing the recommendation for the Fluidline in Blacktrack. That has got to be #1 on my list.
The rest:
#2: Eyeshadow brush 244
#3: Eyeliner brush 266
#4: Paint Pot in Painterly (just finished this one… *snif*)
#5: Lipstick in “O” – it’s seriously underrated now, but I love the shade and the finish on this one. Come to think of it, any MAC lipstick would be a must-have for me. Especially if it’s red!
Milka says
Oh MAC how I love thee!
1- MSF in Soft n Gentle
2- Mineralize blush in Gentle
3- Select moisturecover concealer
4- Russian Red lippy

1. Eyeshadow in Love Lace
2. Lipstick in Pretty Please
3. Mineralize Eyeshadow Duo in My Dark Magic
4. Blush in Darkly My Dear

I second the Blacktrack and brown eyeshadow. I also love the 224! Ok, I really need to get the 217. I keep putting it off because I have 224 and thought it was similar enough, but I still want ittttttt.
NeenaJ says
I’m think MAC eye products are some of the most useful, multi-tasking and unique products around. For reference, I’m an NW15.
1. Painterly paintpot (or the matte paintpot that most closely matches your skintone).
2. Vanilla Pigment (works as an eye highlight, face, and body highlighter).
3. Woodwinked eyeshadow (a gorgeous metallic neutral that works across multiple skintones).
4. Dipdown or Dark Diversion Fluidline (because black is too harsh for an everyday look IMO).
5. Dalliance mega metal eyeshadow (because there is nothing else like it).
If you already own one of these, then I would go for either the MAC Prolongwear concealer or the 217 eyeshadow brush – my “do it all” eye brush when I only have room for a few items.
jackie says
1. msf natural medium dark
2. 217 perfect in small spaces and blending!
3. boy bait dazzle glass
4. angel lipstick
4. cork e/s

Honestly i think MAC’s way overrated. What i do like is the brushes. I love my 239, 217, 182 and 187.
lexi says
great question:
1. espress e/s
2. #266 – this with espresso is my everyday eyebrow shade
3. tie between #217 and #219 brush – to choose would be like Sophie’s Choice
4. Pigment in Tan – my eyelid but better shade
5. Paint Pot – Indianwood (again my eyelid but better in PP form hahaha)
MONICA_MAUI says
Hey! it’s been a while since I commented on anything ;/
1. Virgin Isle cream colour base
2. Select Cover Up concealer
3. Cut to Fit eyeshadow (discontinued, i think)
4. Groundwork paint pot
5. Melba blush
I’m not big on color on my face, lol. I love the natural face and eyes but then again I use super bright lips like Neon Orange, Show Orchid or Style Curve 😉
Lily says
I definitely agree with you 100% on the 217 and Pro Longwear Concealer. This concealer is MAGICAL and it blends so well. I adore it. Here’s my top 5!
1. Fix+ – like everyone else on here who’s said it! This is perfect for setting your looks and works wonders for hydrating if you’re dry skinned.
2. Brule e/s – I’m not a huge fan of matte shadows, but this shadow is so versatile. It goes with literally any look and I use it almost every day. It blends like a dream, too!
3. Vanilla Pigment – I love highlight colors that can be used for other things as well. I think this is why I adore pigments so much. Not only can I use Vanilla as an all over lid color and a highlight color, but I also use it for highlighting my cheek bones and the tip of my nose. It’s also perfect for a sheen mixed with your foundation or gloss to create a soft shimmer.
4. Painterly Paint Pot – I have super oily lids, and have major issues with creasing. So I apply this on top of UDPP and it works wonders. My shadows no longer crease, my liner stays where it’s supposed to…. it’s just a necessity if you have oily problems.
5. Oil Control Lotion – Now that applies only to oily folks, obviously. But every since I received a sample of this product, I almost cry in happiness when I touch my face and it feels great. I used to have to reapply Blot Powder at least 2-3 times a day, now it’s maybe only once if I feel like it. It’s pricey at $29 bucks, but definitely worth it if you need oil control!
Nora says
Mine:
Mineralize Skinfinish Natural – I rely on this for my daily powder, and it’s usually about all the ‘foundation’ I ever wear. It’s light, comfortable, covers well, lasts a long time and perfectly matches my skin. Love it.
#226 brush. I rarely buy limited edition brushes, but I’m so glad I got this one. It’s perfect for a light wash of shadow color, very intricate crease work and very light applications of highlighers; all the things I do most with eye makeup. It’s the perfect brush for me.
Brule eye shadow. The PERFECT highlighter for me, it’s awesome. I also use it to brighten up the eye area.
Brow gel. It just works. Makes my brows look really neat and nice, and I love the tinted ones when I’m feeling lazy.
Chatterbox lipstick. I have tons of favorite MAC lipsticks – Way To Love and Lovelorn are very close seconds to this one – but there’s something about Chatterbox that I just adore.
