Wearing MAC Beth Ditto Shade & Smoke Shadow/Liner in Beth Mask on my eyes, Powder to the People on my cheeks and Pro Longwear Lipcreme in Dear Diary on my lips
Turn it up, y’all! That sailor wants to party. Isn’t that right?
Hey, Sailor! You want to party, right? Well there’s a party over here! 🙂
Come on, girls and guys, let’s turn up the music, kick off our heels, and let down our hair. It’s time for two new collections to take center stage at MAC.
The 24-piece Beth Ditto and 17-piece Casual Colour collections are already busting moves online, but the counter party doesn’t start till next week, June 7 here in North America, and internationally later the same month.
For the Beth Ditto collection, MAC collaborated with the singer-songwriter herself, and I pumped up her jams (thanks, YouTube!) while I swatched and took pictures today.
Look at those marvelously bright Pro Longwear Lipcreams down there in Dear Diary (two words: neon pink) and BOOYAH!! (a bright orange).
From a marketing standpoint, you just can’t go wrong with a name like “BOOYAH!!” I mean, if a reviewer didn’t like the color, what are they gonna say? “I hate BOOYAH!!”
BOOYAH!! With a name like that, it’s just hard to paint it in a negative light.
Not that I would, because I think it’s great.
Listening to Beth, with my arms, eyes and lips all covered in makeup, I had the urge to roller skate around my neighborhood with my boombox today. Good thing I can’t find my old roller skates…but I did air snap, neck roll and vogue in my room more than once this afternoon. 🙂
I feel like MAC captured Beth’s ferocity (fierceness?) very clearly in the collection’s lipsticks. They’re bold, and they make a statement, like she does in some of her videos with adventurous makeup.
The only thing is, I’m not so sure that same ferocity also comes across in the eye products…
The Shade & Smoke Shadow/Liners and Zoom Lash Mascaras are quieter than I expected.
Shh… Like the cooks in the MAC kitchen were having a party, and then all of the sudden someone starting banging on the walls and threatening to call the cops unless they turned the music down, so they did.
I will say that I really like their flexibility. You can wear them separately or layered together. I’m not sure yet if they’re approved for use on the water line, but I’ll find out and let you know.
The watercolor quality of the colors in Powder to the People also surprised me. From the look of the bright polka dots in the pan, I expected more POW! — vibrant pops of color. But on my skin, the shades actually apply rather muted and sheer.
I need to spend more time with the collection before deciding whether it makes me want to dance or gives me the blues. For now, though, big snaps for the the Pro Longwear Lipcremes. That much is for sure.
As for the the second collection, the laid-back, brunch-ready Casual Colour, I tried three of the eight potted lip and cheek creams in Lazy Sunday (a baby pink), Weekend Getaway (a cool rose crème) and Out for Fun (a cool coral crème).
So far, so good. 🙂
They’re like Ryan Gosling’s character in Drive, slick and smooth. The finish has just the faintest suggestion of a sheen, and they’re super easy to apply.
Still have to test them for wear time, but I definitely like what I see.

What do you think of these next two MAC collections? Are you buzzing about Beth Ditto or craving Casual Colour?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen
Jessica says
GASP! Karen, that neon pink lipstick looks AH-MAZING on you!!! Love it! It must be mine! Ps. any tips on taking photos of lots of swatches on your arm? Which camera (or lens) do you use? Thanks girl! xo
Karen says
I use a Cannon G11. 🙂
musical says
OUT. FOR. FUN. What a yummy color! Have to get it! Dear Diary looks beyond amazing on you!
Karen says
YES! That’s my fave out of the bunch so far. 🙂 I think I’ll wear it tomorrow.
Corals, woooo!
musical says
YAY for corals!
Jenn says
Woah! Your eyes look GORGEOUS in the first pic!!
Karen says
Thanks Jenn! 🙂 Do you think you might pick up anything from this collection?
Joyce says
Marine Life was $26, My Paradise and Flower Fantasy were $28 and Crew was $29. I’m assuming Powder to the People is $38 because prices are going up again and it’s a multi-tasker that can be used on the face and eyes. Hmm…I don’t know how I feel about the product, yet. I might just have to stop by the counter and play around with it before buying it.
Joyce says
Also, I’m assuming that the price is higher because MAC collaborated with another brand/musical artist/public figure. I don’t mind the price, but I wish they had special exterior packaging along with the pretty polka dot design.
Nina says
I believe its higher because its actually an eyeshadow palette as well as a powder (based on the description) … 🙂
Rainy Days & Lattes says
Thanks for the swatches and the beautiful glorious photos. I really want the polka dotted powder. And you really look amazing in dark lip colors 🙂
Anna says
Out for Fun!!! It looks gorgeous on lips AND cheeks!
Amy says
I ordered Lazy Sunday and Weekend Getaway. I keep flip flopping on Evening Stroll. It looks like such an intense violet color–I don’t know how that would look against my ultra fair, cool skin!
dani@callitbeauty says
Definitely getting my hands on Out For Fun and Weekend Getaway!
Let says
Weekend Getaway and Out for Fun looks so pretty!
Let says

Becca @ The Beauty Sample says
I’m super curious about the lip and cheek creams. I think they’re gorgeous but I am a little worried that they’re going to be creamier and more moisturizing than the Cremeblend blushes–and that will not fly with my oily skin :/ I guess I’ll have to wait and see!
Tyler says
How does the blue charge mascara compare to the recent YSL majorelle blue?
Advah says
Interesting concept, but I don’t think the colours are for me. I do really like the idea of the Shadow and Smoke pencils though!
Teri says
Just what I thought, you are stunning with both bright lip colours! I kinda talked myself out of it, but now that I see it on you I want them again! Lol!
Livia says
i LOVE Dear Diary on you! 🙂 x
Sunny @ Mostly Sunny says
I love Dear Diary and Booyah on you! Those are the two items I’d be interested in checking out!
Marina says
Karen, I LOVE the first three makeup looks in this post!!! That eye makeup really suits you and also the first fuchsia, second orange and third dark lipsticks. just WOW, seriously 🙂
Kajal Couture says
I’m most interested in the lip/cheek cremes. I love multitasking products and BB Pot Rouges so these are right up my alley.
Nina says
Woohooo the powder when swirled looks gorgeousss! I think I want Youre Perfect Already — I saw some swatches on a Japanese blog and it looks so pretty! 🙂
Kim says
I’m more of a Casual kind of gal (Out for Fun looks the most interesting to me), but must say that I really like Heart Hangover, which I think is stunning on you. I like the name Drag, Strip. It’s catchy, if a bit creepifying. 🙂
Are you hitting Snow White tonight?? I’m not sure I can fit it in but hopefully will get there sometime this weekend. RT gave it pretty bad reviews, but I usually don’t let that stop me. Btw, I watched the remake of Conan the Barbarian last night (featuring 2 Game of Thrones actors). I’m giving it one star. And really that’s just because it had 2 GoT actors! 🙂
Karen says
I’m gonna try to. If not tonight sometime this weekend. 🙂
Those remakes are so hit or miss! Have you seen the new Footloose (LOL, I almost typed “Foodloose”)? It’s actually really good!
Kim says
I’m glad you liked Snow White! I didn’t make it yet, so I’ll have to go this week (Friday will be reserved for Prometheus, of course!). No, I haven’t seen the Footloose remake yet, but I heard they did a really good job with it. I must say that I’m cringing every time I see the Total Recall reboot. I love the original and this new one looks kind of painful. I hope I’m wrong. 🙂
Pamela says
Thanks for linking the video. I always heard of Beth and Gossip but I never heard any of her music until now–I like it. She’s fabulous! The video reminds me of Madonna “Justify my Love”. By the way, Karen, I like you best in Heart Hangover!
Xero says
Out For Fun looks amazing! If only I wasn’t so broke…
corallista says
Ohh I really like the look of Our for Fun! Can’t wait for these to launch in India! Apart from the lip cremes, Beth Ditto seems a bit disappointing.
corallista says
I love this shirt of yours btw! Love the medley of blue and pink, I have something similar 🙂
Alice Chaffin says
I like the colors and that they are bright for summer. I thought they looked very pretty on you and the color they added. I will definitely be taking a look.
denise says
I ordered Booyah and Dear diary yesterday online. Mac had 2 day free shipping! Love the way both of these lipsticks look on you! Can’t wait to get my order!
Emi at Project Swatch says
Out for Fun is SO pretty! I am really intrigued by the Casual Color lip/cheek color pots, but I definitely want to test them in-store before I commit to buy. But if I do like the texture, Out for Fun is definitely at the top of my list!
Helz Nguyen says
Wouldnt thought the Zoom Lash in Plum could show up on black lashes, but it really does! Definitely going to get that one and couple of Casual Colors 🙂
A.T. says
Oigh.
Beth Mask, Out for Fun, and BOOYAH!! are attacking my head and heart right now. So gorgeous, and they look fantastic on you. I love that Out for Fun works well for multiple purposes, so that one has a better chance of inspiring me to misbehave… I could probably live without Beth Mask (I have a small collection of kinda sorta colors in the family of), but BOOYAH!! (like Out for Fun) would be a unique addition to my collection.
I should want to resist. My will, however, she is quite weak… argh! Gorgeous colors, thank you for the swatches 🙂
Kalisa says
Love your blog. So want to try Powder to the people!
