Wearing Eyeshadow in Moth Brown on my eyes and Lipstick in Candy Yum-Yum on my lips
Rock the makeup vote! Power to the lipgloss-loving people!
The citizenry has spoken, and MAC mavens made their voices heard in the new MAC By Request collection, a nine-piece limited edition release featuring nine comeback colors chosen by MAC fans.
Last spring MAC-aholics worldwide voted for their favorite shades on Facebook from among a field of 18 classic colors previously featured in limited edition collections. Question for you: what products would you pick for a MAC starter quad?
One of the reasons I drove down to San Jose last Saturday was to help my friend Jen pick out some new makeup. She’s a busy new mom who hadn’t visited a makeup counter in years, but she wanted some new shades. Sounded to me like a perfect reason for a trip to MAC. 🙂
Jen’s pretty new to the line, so we talked it over and put together a starter quad of four basic, everyday shades.
Clockwise from the lower left: Woodwinked, Shroom, Soba and Carbon
I wanted her to have a few flexible neutrals she could use as starting points, so we chose Woodwinked, Shroom, Soba and Carbon — shades that I figured she’d be able to use daily. And when she wants to do something more adventurous with color, she can also incorporate them into brighter looks as accent shades and/or liners.
Now my question for you, fellow MAC fans/fiends, is this: if you were putting together a palette to introduce someone to the line, which shades would you pick? Inquiring minds want to know.
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen
Phyrra says
Moth brown looks gorgeous and smoky on you. Jete is nice and glowy.
Karen says
Thanks, Phyrra. Agreed on Jete — it would be perfect for the inner corner. 🙂
Hope your week is off to a great start!
dani@callitbeauty says
Rocker and Moth Brown look amazing — I’ll definitely keep an eye out for them!
Karen says
You need Moth Brown in your life, Dani!
Lorraine ER says
Those are the same two that have my eye!
gigi says
you picked the perfect colors for a nice neutral pallette. two that I really love and might add would be jest and naked lunch. gigi. food and beauty blogger @www.gigikkitchen.blogspot.com
Karen says
Naked Lunch is one of my fave colors, too, Gigi. Have you tried Arena? That’s another good one.
Lulle says
I’m not into pink, so the lipsticks are really not for me… Well Rocker could be, but I already have a lot of similar shades.
And the other products, hmm, not what I voted for! I’m not very excited by this collection 🙁
Karen says
Hi Lulle,
What shades did you vote for?
Tracy says
Rocker and Moth Brown! Love them!
My picks for a different MAC Quad would be: Print, Vanilla, Vex and Hepcat! The four make a great eye!
Another Quad I’d make would be: Brule, Sketch, All That Glitters and Twinks!
Karen says
Ahh, great color combinations, Tracy.
Oh, and thanks for reminding me to add Twinks to my list. I keep meaning to pick it up but keep forgetting.
Emily says
Twinks changed my life 🙂 x
Angel says
Moth Brown and Moxie look gorgeous!!
My picks for a starter MAC quad would probably be: Satin Taupe, Naked Lunch, Carbon, and hmmm perhaps sumptuous olive for the days when they want a little more colour! (Or Star Violet if they don’t like green!)
Karen says
Great colors, Angel! 🙂
Linh @ Linh's Kitchen says
Hey Karen, you’re right on the mark with the intro palette.
I wear Shroom almost every day as a highlighter and Woodwinked is one of my all time favourite colours, it goes on smoothly, a brown with just the right amount of gold and photographs beautifully.
My recommendation is to bypass the Carbon and go with a nice plum eyeshadow. Two reasons, firstly, although Carbon is the gold standard for rich black eyeshadow, I rarely use it, maybe once every few months at the most (not much of a party girl anymore). Secondly a dark purple in the crease goes beautifully with Woodwinked on the lid. A MAC artist gave me that tip and I rock that look at least once a week.
I use Urban Decay’s eyeshadow in Crash for my purple fix but I’m sure you and the readers can come up with a great MAC suggestion.
P.S. Rocker looks awesome on you!
Savannah says
Ooh, what is the purple you use with woodwinked? I’m looking for a vampy purple for stuff like that and you may have my answer.
Linh @ Linh's Kitchen says
Hey Savannah, I use an Urban Decay purple so don’t have the MAC counterpart. It’s a deep purple with subtle purple glitter flecks. Any rich plum colour would go well with Woodwinked. You wouldn’t think so but they go together like peanut butter and jelly or ice cream on a hot day.
Maudy Mac says
nice tip!!
Joyce says
I’m definitely getting Jete and Moth Brown even though I may have similar shades in my stash. They’re both so easy to wear. So, I’m sure I’ll get a lot of use out of them. =) Too bad MAC doesn’t sell limited edition eyeshadows in pan forms. I have no issues with depotting, but I would have like to save a few bucks. haha..
Lacey says
Karen, you enable me SO much! You always look fantabulous… because fantastic and fabulous by itself do not describe your awesomeness! I really think I need Jete and Rocker in my collection 😉
Rae // theNotice says
Ooh, Moth Brown looks incredible on you! I love it with Rocker — very rocker-chic, if you will 😛
Suzi says
My quad would be rice paper, wood winked, handwritten, and carbon
Sara says
For a mac starter palette, I would have to add Satin Taupe to the list… it’s just such a perfect color, neutral but interesting! In addition, with just a wash of color in the lid and a bit of liner the eyes are already “done”. 🙂
Kisses
jaymie says
For MAC starter quad, i would choose Monte Blanc, Soba, Sumptuous Olive, and Twinks or Retrospeck 🙂
Kat says
My absolute top pick for a versatile starter shadow would have to be Mulch.
Abi says
Great choices! I rarely wear black shadow, so I’d probably swap out Carbon for Concrete – which I discovered thanks to you! It really is the perfect brow color, and it does a nice crease. I don’t really know Soba ( but now I have to try it) so maybe I’d swap that out for a deep color that could work as liner like Nehru or Indian Ink, or one of my all time favorite lid colors: Samoa Silk.
Kiss & Make-up says
Hmmm guacamola all of a sudden looks a lot different :-/ Or is that just me?
Yesenia says
I want to make a palette so bad! I have woodwinked, but I want carbon, naked lunch, and maybe even wedge.
Savannah says
That’s exactly what my “everyday” quad is. 🙂
Nina says
I believe im going to get Jete eyeshadow … Its sooo pretty! 🙂
The rest are a pass for me because I already have 2 Moth Browns, and a Guacamole. The lip shades – im not such a big fan of.
If I make a 4 pan MAC Palette, it would be the one that id bring with me in my purse all the time – so ill put Nehru, Expensive Pink, Woodwinked and Vanilla (it would have been Blanc Type but they dc’d that one!) …
Icequeen81 says
Why does rocker looks so shiny? I thought it was matte. Liked the moxie on you.
Hard question, for my own choice I think I will recommend the neutral color of the line.
If I should recommend lipstick color moxie and rocker will suit any skin color
Elka Bolhafner says
I believe Rocker was a permanent color in the late 80’s … I seem to recall having one in my bag. I understand they have featured it since in LE collections. I wish they would have let us submit colors since my favorite ‘Glam’ has been D/C for a long time. I used to wear Glam all the time and my bestie wore Russian Red. I basically stopped buying makeup 16 yrs ago only being tempted by a few here and there {I have a case!!! full of BUs of everything o.0} so my memory may be off. Especially since I used to purchase the stuff at The Bay in Montreal prior to it being available in US and then at Barnies in San Fran in early 90’s.
Yes I go through spurts of buying especially in fall which is why I even pop into beauty blogs. I particularly enjoy your blog
Nadege says
Loving that moxie on you, Karen!
Katherine G says
I am not totally new to the MAC line (I’ve heard of it through friends, and passed the makeup counters for it at Nordstrom), but I haven’t bought anything yet. Your posts have made me really want to take a close look at the MAC counter at Nordstrom! I know I definitely want Club, Gorgeous Gold, and a few other colors. Moth brown looks really good on you! I’ve checked out makeup counters before in department stores and wasn’t impressed by the attitudes of the employees. If it wasn’t for that I would probably at least own some Chanel makeup by now. But, I see that MAC has a good website, so if the makeup counter people aren’t nice at Nordstrom I will just order online. I’ve got that MAC itch now thanks to you, and that palette looks like a good start to me for your friend Jen!
Michelle says
My four standby shades are probably Bisque (lid), Wedge (crease), Vanilla (highlight brow), and Charcoal Brown (for brows and to add depth to outer V).
Those shades look great on you — think I need to pick up a few!!
Kim says
Rocker looks awesome on you. I’m no help with the MAC colors and I’m actually sitting here thinking “why is Moth Brown blue?”. 🙂
Danielle says
NEED Moth Brown. Looks amazing on you!
The quad I would put together for a MAC newbie? Easy: Phloof!, Copperplate, Mystery and All That Glitters. You can create day/night looks as well as warm/cool ones with those 4 shadows. They happen to be among my most used ever. 🙂
Nikki B. says
Can I just say that while I haven’t worn any MAC products in a really long time, I am definitely going to pick up the lipstick “Rocker” simply for the fact that it’s my last name!! Lol haha
Krystle (Baking Beauty) says
I’m really glad they’re bringing back those lip glasses, I think I need one (okay maybe 2) of each!
Kimberly says
My fave four starter shades are Brule, Soft Brown, Gold Mine (or Amber Lights), and Espresso.
Linh @ Linh's Kitchen says
Good catch Kimberly! I forgot to include Espresso. That was my very first MAC eyeshadow and I continue to use it every single day for my brows. The perfect brow colour for raven haired girls. However, I’ve filled out my red hair and freckled girlfriend’s eyebrow with Espresso (and a very very light hand) and looked natural on her too.
I use to wear BLACK eyeliner to fill in my brows. So glad I discovered Espresso. Also glad I don’t have any pictures of me with pitch black eyebrows.
Teri says
Ooooh I love all the lipsticks, so bright and fun! And Rocker is such a sexy shade :). I didn’t really get all the hype about Moth Brown but now I see it, it’s sooo gorgeous!
Annie says
I was really excited after I walked out of the MAC store with my own quad! I use Ricepaper as a highlight, Da Bling on the lid, Soft Brown in the crease, and Mulch on the outer corner. Sometimes, I’ll switch it up and use Ricepaper as a highlight and on the lid, Soft Brown in the crease with Da Bling blended right above it, and Mulch in the outer corner. Ah, options!
Nicole says
LOVE Candy Yum-yum on you! Amazing!
Becca @ The Beauty Sample says
Moth Brown and Rocker look absolutely amazing on you! I don’t know that I’m ready to wear something so bold as Rocker though (I really only wear tinted balm usually), but I’m definitely going for Moth Brown!
YadiQ says
I need candy yum yum in my life – bright pink lips are my signature look!
steph b says
Naked Lunch would definitely be in my starter pallette. I’d also like one easy to use color like Shale. Add a highlighter and crease darkener and I’d be set for just about anything.
80sChicwithglasses says
My MAC quad consists of Saddle, Era, Typographic & Carbon. I use saddle as an all over lid color to even out my eyelids, era as a subtle highlight & occasionally in the inner corner and then I got a pencil brush to smudge either carbon or typographic into my lashline. (I love gray and black). This is my first and only mac quad that I consistantly use (and hit pan on). It’s very easy to use and great for a neutral eye for work and then use black liner along with an extra coat of mascara for a night out.
Lila says
I’m NC 42 also. Why does Candy Yum Yum look so good on you and make me look like a sick barbie? I’m depressed 🙁
