You get all dolled up, spend a chunk of your morning getting ready to face the day, and then BAM! — you open the door and it’s the storm of the century outside. Maybe it’s a torrential downpour, and the rain is coming in from all directions (even sideways!), or it’s a blizzard, and there’s five feet of snow blocking your front door, or it’s monsoon season in the tropics, and it’s humid enough outside to breath with gills, and melt even the most industrial strength long-wearing makeup in a matter of minutes.
When the weather outside is frightful, do you still do your makeup?
I totally do. We don’t regularly get extreme, extreme weather here, but sometimes we do. Here it’s heavy downpours, usually in the late winter and spring, and when they happen, I bust out my waterproof and long-wearing stuff.
I usually start with a waterproof mascara. Maybelline makes one I love called Full ‘N Soft Waterproof. It handles heavy rain, and it’s super affordable (just $7).
Then I’ll add a tough-as-nails brow filler like Hourglass Arch, which I’m seriously obsessed with (again!).
For my skin, MAC Face and Body, which doesn’t budge for nothin’. Then under-eye concealer to cover up those pesky dark circles, followed by a little powder, blush and bronzer. I’ll usually go with something non-sticky on my lips, like a stain or lipsticks, since getting hair caught in my gloss is never fun…
How about you? Do you still do your makeup when the weather outside is frightful (rainy, snowing, crazy humid)?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen
P.S. Welcome to the hump. 🙂

If not anything, eyeliner and some lipgloss is a must! It will brighten up my mood from the dullness of the weather!
meganlisa says
I do makeup if I’m home alone, going to the swimming pool (concealer, waterproof mascara and a little blush/lip gloss), yoga, rain, heat and anything else. I do it for me…regardless of how it survives or who sees. I’ve had my smears…I just wipe it off. Granted, I live in California so don’t see the worst of the weather.
Kiss & Make-up says
I always put on my war paint, no matter what the weather is like! 🙂
Alison M says
Absolutely! On those days I often stay home but do my makeup twice…makeup is what brightens my day. The power of bold lipstick or a rockin’ smoky eye can totally cheer up a gloomy gross day.
Agata says
We are having a snow blizzard here today and I am not even planning on going outside but I decided to put on make up anyways 🙂
Narine says
Yes, unfortunately this makeup addiction knows no weather changes. So I give in and do at least a simple makeup of moisturizer/bb/bronze/blush/mascara/tinted lip balm. Did I leave anything? lol
Fancie says
Just my brows, falsies and lippie. I don’t usually wear much makeup unless I’m going out usually. I’m pretty lazy in that way lol.
Erin says
If I have an event or something important to go to I will wear it without letting the weather stop me!
Vineetha says
basic mascara, liner, lipstick is what i go for. Skip foundation usually and go for loose powder 🙂
Allison C says
That’s so funny. I am heading out to shovel since we’re having a blizzard. I am skipping the makeup, and I hope and assume I won’t run into any of the neighbors, lol!
Danielle says
I definitely wear makeup regardless of the weather, although I will adjust my products a bit. But it gets very hot here in Florida during the summer, so I have learned how to figure out what works.
Shannon says
We get some nasty weather in NYC (in fact, we’re in the middle of a slush-storm today). If it’s snowing, raining, or bitterly cold, I’ll do most of my makeup (face/cheeks/brows/eyes) at home, but wait on the lips and mascara until I get to work. That way the mascara can’t bleed all over my face (if it’s wet), or clump up when my breath-mist clings to my lashes (when it’s crazy cold and I have a scarf covering up every inch of my face, funneling my breath vapors at my eyes).
When it’s humid in the summertime, I’m usually wearing a little less makeup anyways, but still tend to do the basics at least. Eyeshadow primer kind of becomes a must (if you’re wearing eyeshadow).
shani says
Yes, absolutely. Honestly, I think it’s even more essential on days like that. If I ever thought I looked as bad as I felt, I’d feel that much worse!

It’s funny you posted this – we’re having an intense weather here in Michigan and I have just recently started doing all of my makeup when I get to work. Ordinarily I would do it at home, but I usually wear a hat and a scarf or balaclava to protect my face from snow/ice/wind, so even if I put on makeup it’s going to end up rubbing off on that. I agree, the Maybelline waterproof Full ‘N Soft is great in bad conditions!
Martha Nelson says
An average temperature in winter where I live is -10C (14F) the coldest -20C (-4F) or worst, so the skin gets extremely dry (hands, face, lips) so those BB creams are a blessing, lip care is a must, and some lipstick formula will do it, I’m 44 years old, so the skin around my eyes is getting more thin and I’m getting more wrinkles so finding a good concealer is more challenging and don’t forget lotion in your hands at nite time.
Amanda says
On a windy day, I don’t even think about pulling out a Lipglass. Chubby sticks, stains and long-wear lipsticks are definitely the way to go.
phuongk says
gorgeous picture karen! i don’t like to put on makeup during cold weather. i think it’s because my routine takes so long and it’s so cold in the morning! but if it’s been a few days of bad weather and i need a pick-me-up, then i’ll do a little cherry stained lips or blush.
can we get an extended breakdown or tutorial of the other products you used in this look?
Natalie says
Yes! I live in the northeast and if I didn’t do my makeup during bad weather I would be bare faced all winter. Lol!
Chris25 says
It depends on where I am going. If it’s to the store, just concealer and lipstick. If it’s to school or some place more interesting than the store, I would do eye makeup, concealer, powder and lip color.
Sarah says
I definitely do! We got through horribly cold and snowy winters, and some bright colors and a full face are sometimes the only way to brighten my day!
Thanks for sharing your bad weather makeup picks!
Sarah says
I would do less makeup but would do a bit, maybe a cheekstain and some kajal.
thebeautybadger says
I totally change my look for bad weather days. I tend to just pile on some waterproof mascara, maybe waterproof liner, and a lip balm (likely with some colour). I’ll use my stick foundation and hope that it stays on but that is usually a hit or miss. I walk to work so anything else like blush or shadow would get pretty gross if the weather is wet on my walk. I like to keep it light and use products that last a long time.

We just had a snowstorm and a ice storm (though not a lot of accumulation) here in MD. I typically don’t wear makeup because I’ve been stuck in the house for these storms and others. If I have to go out, I will do basic coverage with BB cream, some contouring with bronzer and highlighter, and concealer over zits. That’s been my latest 5 minute face, with nothing on the eyes unless I do Benefit in Birthday Suit.

The weather never stops me!
Vanessa says
Great timing! Today was ice and rain, which I biked in to get to work. And I wore makeup.
I tend to forget about makeup in the summer, but wear it for rain and snow. I live in VA, so the weather doesn’t get too stormy and cold.
For example, today I just did a some water resistant eyeliner before leaving the house. Then I washed my face and filled in brows after getting into work. If I wanted concealer or whatever else, I would have applied it then too.
In summer, I think the fresh face is very appropriate.
I actually was on the hunt for water resistant brows for awhile in the color that I like, but I just gave up haha I require budget options, darnnit! It’s the principle of the matter 🙂

I’ll put on the usual face and pack more than usual for touch-ups. One winter, foundation actually froze on my face, developed cracks and started to melt off as it thawed indoors. No product could have withstood that kind of extreme temp but I’ll be damned if I suffer that scenario again!
Savannah says
Yep, I pretty well do a full face if I’m leaving my yard (unless I’m super sick or it’s an emergency). It snows a lot here in winter-peg ( see what I did there…) so all winter unless its -15 and higher I have to wait till I get to my destination to put on my mascara. If its that cold that I need a scarf I wait to apply my lips too. Rain isn’t that bad as long as I have a hood, and just wait to apply my mascara. My hair is constantly staticky because of my hood though which is a beauty annoyance. It’s tough trying to look cute when you look 50 pounds heavier in a parka and shmucked up hair 🙂
Chelsea says
I do, which is good because all we’re getting here in SE Michigan right now is CRAP! I had to go into work late today, roads were awful. I do makeup pretty similar to what I’d do in not-crap weather.
When I walked in the winter (working at Macy’s or the University) I wore less liner and mascara – cold makes the stuff run! No point doing a cat eye if it’s going to run off your face!
I just ordered some MAC Face and Body foundation samples off eBay (could be sketchy, but I would need the white to mix in, and we don’t have a pro store in the state – MAC has a good return policy online, but that’s a big hassle). I ordered N1 and White, so I’m hoping that might work with my skin! The way you describe sounds like perfection.
Ankita@corallista says
I never step out without some lip gloss and a touch of concealer! And on humid days when I was in India, I always made sure to powder my T-zone to keep the pesky shine at bay!
Melody says
What a cute pic! =^_^=
This winter if I’m not going anywhere I just put on lip product as I can’t stand bare lips, mine get so dry. I was recently hospitalized so the cold outside hurts, even in Texas. But if I go anywhere def: colorful lips, concealer and blush! Usually colorful eyeliner too if I’m in a hurry.
Sandra G says
I love rain, but if it’s happening I’m definitely not wearing any makeup! During summer I usually keep it to waterproof mascara (have yet to find a waterproof formula that doesn’t freaking smudge) and a bit of a lip product (no gloss if it’s windy outside, since I never have my hair tied up it’ll totally stick).
I’ll always be wearing lip balm, at least!
Meghan L says
100% do my make up all the time for work. If it’s raining or I’m lazy I will pull my hair back. I was growing out a victoria beckham cut so doing my hair was crucial! I have enough to manage now but clips and head bands were my best friends 🙂

I have been doing crazy things like walking 2-1/2 miles to work in snowstorms this winter (part of my weight loss plan), and no way am I going to work without makeup. Here’s my routine:
Make Up Forever waterproof concealer on and around the end of my nose (since I have to blow my nose every 5 minutes in the cold weather).
Tarte tinted moisturizer in Fair + Tarte bb tinted treatment in medium-tan mixed together on face; Tarte Amazonian Clay full coverage foundation in light beige as a concealer where the rosacea still shows through; set under my eyes with MAC Studio Careblend pressed powder in light, set everywhere else with a very light dusting of Tarte Amazonian Clay full coverage airbrush foundation in fair-light neutral (and carry the Tarte pressed mineral powder light in my bag to touch up the end of my nose). This is the most durable combination of products I have found (having rosacea, I need to wear mineral sunscreen any time I step outdoors, chemical sunscreens make my skin turn flaming red). Adding makeup setting spray not necessary.
Tarte amazonian clay matte waterproof bronzer.
Make Up Forever Aqua Brow + Anastasia Beverly Hills clear brow gel.
Nars Eye Paint in bright silver for liner/shadow (this stuff does not come off until I take it off, no matter what).
Any mascara with Anastasia Beverly Hills Lash Genius waterproof top coat over it (another fantastic product — all mascaras smudge on me, this totally prevents that).
A sheer neutral-ish lip color in case it smears while I’m blowing my nose or gets on my scarf (I usually prefer bright lip colors, but for some reason stains don’t last on me).
I can walk through a blizzard in this and only have to touch up the end of my nose/upper lip where some product came off due to nose-blowing. I do carry a sample-size container of my TM/BB mixture and another of the MUFE concealer as well as the pressed mineral powder in my bag, also the MAC Careblend pressed powder for when I need less coverage or things are starting to look too matte.
Humid summers bring a whole other set of problems, lol.
Sylirael says
I will absolutely put on a bright lipstick if the weather is rubbish – it makes everything better!
However, I’ll also leave off the gloss and switch to a waterproof mascara/liner if things are a bit rainy 😉
Kim says
Dude, I think we have the same jacket, except mine is black (of course, it is). North Face, below the knee?
If I’m going out, I do my makeup, no matter what. It’s always simple but I would be hard pressed to leave the house without mascara and blush. 🙂
Karen says
Almost twinsies. Almost! Mine is Land’s End, and it’s just above the knee. I like that it covers my butt. A cold butt is so not fun! I want a North Face one, though. They have some stylish cuts!
Miss you much!!! (To quote Janet Jackson.)
Iris says
That is such a cool coat.
I still wear makeup if the weather is bad outside. I just wear less of it and lighter colours just in case there’s a snowstorm or downpour. Smudge resistant. 🙂
Miki says
OMG I thought I was the only one haha! I don’t leave my house without at least something! Weather is NOT a factor. It only determines whether I use my matte bb cream or my moisturizing cc cream! I’m not worried about anyone seeing me without makeup, but I just don’t know … I always wear it. I frikin wear makeup to the gym!! Like a post above, even to the pool! LOL. I heart my war paint. Haha.
N. Cog Nita says
Whether or not I wear makeup, depends on the occasion, not the weather. 🙂 If I’m not seeing people – or if I don’t want people to “see” me – I go without. Like I home or if I’m running errands and don’t want anyone bothering me. LOL That’s when I bust out the not-fitted clothes, so I’m even more “invisible.” Luckily for me, I look COMPLETELY different when I’m wearing different makeup (smoky eyes & nude lip vs. clean eye & bright/dark lip), and people don’t even recognize me. I love it. Sometimes you feel like dealing with people, and sometimes you just don’t! 😉
