How’s it going, ladies? Remember the pink/purple Rock N’ Roll look we talked about last week? It featured a few products from the new MAC Art Supplies collection which swooped down on MAC counters today. This morning I thought I’d revisit the look and add some notes this time around for a brief tutorial.
A little bit of background…
Inspiration for the winged purple liner goes to ’80s hair metal band Motley Crue. I was listening to them on iTunes when it came to me. Here I’m wearing a toned-down version of the wing for daytime wear, but you could always ramp it up for evenings with a thicker line and a bigger flick.
It’s a pretty simple look in that it’s low on blending and doesn’t require bunches of different brushes. I’m imagining it as a way for makeup beginners or ladies new to color to take a pair of pretty pink and purple eyes for a test drive around town.
Fellow headbangers, if you do end up giving this or something like it a try and feel like sharing, please do! 🙂 Take a picture of yourself and send it to me at karen@makeupandbeautyblog.com. I’d love to see what you come up with.
To do this look you’ll need…
- An eyeshadow base like Urban Decay Eden Primer Potion
- A shimmery, peachy golden eyeshadow like MAC Ricepaper
- A shimmery purplish pink eyeshadow (I used MAC’s Pink Pearl Pigment, which is no longer listed on their website, but something like MAC Stars N’ Rockets would achieve a similar look)
- A glittery purple eyeliner like MAC Pearlglide liner in Designer Purple
- A black eyeliner like MAC Technakohl in Graphblack
- A black mascara like MAC Studio Fix Lash
- A matte pink blush like Benefit Hoola
- A pink lipstain like MAC Pro Longwear Lipstain in Stylesetter
- A shimmery pink gloss like MAC Lipglass in Nymphette

Eyes
- With your finger, dab and blend a thin layer of the eyeshadow primer over your entire eyelid.
- Next, with the tapered blending brush (I used Dolce & Gabbana’s), pat the shimmery, peachy golden eyeshadow directly on top of the primer, applying most of the color on the lid and fading as you move toward your brow.
- Then, using a flat eyeshadow brush like the MAC 239, pack the shimmery purplish pink shadow onto your lid and just barely into the crease. Blend away any harsh lines with your tapered blending brush.
- To emphasize those peepers, line your upper and lower water lines with the black eyeliner.
- Make the look more dramatic by lining your upper and lower lash lines with the glittery purple eyeliner. On the upper lash line, you want the line to start thin near your inner lid (the side closer to your nose) and thicken as it moves out (toward your ear). Optional: A flick at the end definitely ups the rock n’ roll factor.
Wrap up the eye portion of the look by curling your lashes and applying two coats of your favorite black mascara both to the tops and bottoms.
Cheeks and lips
- It’s all gravy from here on out, baby girl! Start with a pop of color on your cheeks using your matte pink blush and your favorite blush brush.
- With the same brush, sweep a matte bronzer beneath the apples of your cheeks, following the natural contours.
- Line and fill your lips with the pink lip stain, and finish with a layer of shimmery pink gloss for good luck!
Now, take a moment to marvel at yourself in the mirror. 🙂 I think it also helps to throw up the rock n’ roll sign with your fingers and head bang away.

Karen

Awesome look. Perfect for a tshirt, leggings and boots kind of weekend afternoon!!!! Love it!
Karen says
Totally! And some big hoops. 🙂
Nina says
Uh huh … nice, easy peasy, relaxed!!!
Thats what I might wear tomorrow when I go see my bestie and her kiddo. Were going to go for cupcakes and tea, preferably somewhere outdoors!
Almost the weekend – what are you going to do this weekend, Karen?
Karen says
That sounds like a lot of fun. How long have you two been BFFs?
I didn’t get to pop over to Macy’s in SF last week for the Flower Show, so I’m really hoping I can go on Saturday. Hopefully it’ll be nice and warm so I can walk around the city some and take pics. 🙂
Nina says
I hope you get to go … it was overcast and windy here today. Threatened to rain a couple of times but didnt. We had fun tho!!!
We met at a teacher certification program in 2004. Weve been best buds since then, and shes expecting her 2nd child in August. We also met up with her younger sister to plan out her baby shower!!!
BrooklynShoeBabe says
Great eye colors! I love the purple and pink.

Karen says
Thanks, BrooklynShoeBabe. Do you think you might try this look?
lexi says
You might actually get me off my lazy butt and get me to participate in this…maybe….I have been rocking the bright purple eyeliner lately.
Karen says
DO IT, dude! You can rock it and then just wear it around the house, LOL! That’s what I do.
lexi says
I bought this eyeliner based on your look alone. I didn’t even swatch it in person till I was ready to pay for it – man, you got some power, lady!!
Yeah I lined one eye last night – I can’t wait to use it in a look!
I’m totally in the mood to listen to the Crue’s “Home Sweet Home” hahahha – i had a friend in the 5th grade that was able to play that piano part on her piano…I was so jealous of her!!
Karen says
GURL I love this liner so much that I might have to squirrel away a few back ups. 🙂 I haven’t loved a purple liner with this sort of intensity in a long time, so I hope you adore it!
Aww, man I never learned how to play the piano part, either… I should ask my bro to work that out for me, ha ha!

I just picked up my MAC artsupplies! I purchased Modern Mocha which on me looks a lot like Cover Girl’s Cinnamon Kiss Lip Stain. Hopefully, it lasts longer then my Cinnamon Kiss (it dried out within two days). I tried on every single color and was pleasantly surprised that each color was bright and true against my dark skin. I found that they look best with a bit of gloss on top.
Karen says
That’s great, Candace! I really hope you like your new Lipstain. Don’t forget to prep your lips beforehand with a little balm. 🙂
noemii says
i totally bought Designer Purple today .. i only bought one because the sales people were so damn pushy . it completely killed my shopping mood . not to mention my dumb allergies are acting up .boo . But it was still so hard to choose ! i think i like these pencils a lot more than i thought i would because instead of the typical silver glitter/shimmer, it has a golden shimmer to it. so gorgeous !
also, purple looks really pretty on you !
i have to go back and get more ..
Karen says
Bummer that the SA’s killed your mood! Hopefully when you go back it’ll be much more fun.
What colors do you think you’ll go back for?
noemii says
I think i’ll go back for Black Line, Undercurrent and Almost Noir; possibly Petrol Blue.. I’m not entirely convinced on that one . And another of Designer Purple .. i’ve got this bad habit where I have to have two of everything >.<
i know i'll probably be beating myself up for it, but i just won't get much of anything for a very long time .. a girl needs to splurge sometimes, no ?
plus, i use eyeliner like it's nobodies business .
but alas, i've never used these Pearlglide liners .. would you happen to know how they hold up with oily lids ?
Karen says
They work GREAT on oily lids. Once they dry they don’t move at all! The only thing is you can’t use ’em on your waterline (the glitter can scratch your eyes out, oh noes!).
Ithfifi says
That’s a beautiful look! This collection is grabbing my attention so bad, I’ve been kinda in a rut with collections lately, but offt! I do love my bright colours. I don’t have a MAC counter near me, I only get to see the collections in person every blue moon when I go to London so I have to order online, but so far I think youve convinced me on designer purple and petrolblue Pearlglide’s and stylesetter for sure (It looks great teamed with the nympette!) 😀
Karen says
Designer Purple is probably my favorite out of the bunch. I almost picked up a back up today, and I haven’t been tempted to to that in years!
What are your favorite MAC brights?
Marian says
You look fabulous! I love these colors on you!
Karen says
Hi Marian,
Are you a purple liner kinda girl, too?
Meghan says
okay i’m sold on the stylesetter lipstain after seeing this picture! i have off work tomorrow and the mall near my house has a mac store and a sephora within 100 feet of eachother…
i’m also gonna pick up the too faced lip bronzer lip gloss tomorrow because i saw that on the sephora website and saw swatches and it looks really pretty..have you ever tried that?
Karen says
Hi Meghan,
Funny, I just got back from SF, where the Sephora and MAC Pro store and within a block of each other. DANGEROUS!
I haven’t tried the Too Faced Lip Bronzer Gloss. I’ll have to hunt it down next time I’m at Sephora. If you end up giving it a try please let me know what you think of it. 🙂
Lindsay says
Maybe I need to go back and check out those lipstains. They look so good on you!

your skin has been looking fantastic lately. are you doing something different? have a fabu wknd! =))
Karen says
Hi Jess,
I think it’s a combo of a bunch of things, including religiously using a Clarisonic, the new Clinique Even Better Serum and a mix of 50/50 MAC Blot and Prep+Prime Powders to set.
Amber says
I’m loving this. Purple is one of the few non-neutral colors I’m comfortable with — could totally see doing this one.
I hate going to the MAC store because that shopping center is a total cluster, but I’m itching for some new gloss and I’d like to try out Nymphette and Plushglass in Power Supply. Because you don’t have enough lipglosses until the drawer won’t shut. 😉
.-= Amber’s last blog post… April fools =-.
Karen says
Amen to that! We need to put that on a bumper sticker or something.
Vonvon says
The Pearlglide in Designer Purple is really gorgeous. It has that lilac tone to it, and that’s just my kind of purple. and besides as a liner, I think it could also pass off as a base or even eyeshadow. I would gladly use any of the Pearlglides on its own.
I managed to swatch all 6 of them, and every time, I swatched one, not only I went WOW!!! My little girl who was with me at my fav MAC store also went…OMG, this color is gorgeous, that color too, bla bla…and she even swatched her fav Purple and Green(Undercurrent) on the back of her hands.

Hola Karen! New reader here and I love your site. You are rocking the Art Supplies and I love it! I went to the MAC store in Arlington, VA yesterday and sadly they were out of the Art Supplies pencils 🙁
Karen says
Hola PJ!
It’s very nice to meet you. 🙂 Bummer that the pencils were MIA! Do you ever buy makeup online? I’m pretty sure you can still get ’em on the MAC website.
Nicole says
I finally got my butt into Bloomingdale’s and walked straight up to the MAC counter and got Designer Purple (after much coveting of it online of course)! Ha, Karen, you would make the best saleswoman ever. xD It takes a lot of will power to not blow my money on the products you review. But I must say when I wore it today at school, I got a lot of compliments, even from my mother as I was on my way out the door to school!
Christa says
This is a great eye makeup. Very wonderfully done and explained. I love most the purple-blue eyeliner.
Audrey says
Hi Karen!
I just found your site like two days ago! I’ve spent hours on here so far haha. I was just wondering if you knew where I could get the purple liner and the shimmery pink shadow for less than the MAC price. It can be a different brand, I’m just on a budget. 🙂
