Do you remember the look I tried last week that featured red lips and teal/brown eyes?
I felt like doing it again today, but this time I snapped a few extra pictures for a quickie tutorial.
After the post last week, reader Jenna left a great tip in the comments that I also wanted to try… She suggested adding some black eyeliner to ramp up the drama, and here’s how it turned out:
Better, right? Thanks for the tip, Jenna! 🙂
If you’d like to give the look a try…
What you’ll need
- An eyeshadow primer like Too Faced Shadow Insurance ($17)
- A creamy pearl eyeshadow like MAC Cream Colour Base in Pearl ($17)
- A dark brown pencil eyeliner like MAC Eye Pencil in Coffee ($13)
- A dark brown eyeshadow like MAC Brun ($15)
- A warm matte brown eyeshadow like MAC Eyeshadow in Brown Script ($15) or Soft Brown ($15)
- A matte peach eyeshadow like MAC Eyeshadow in Arena ($15) or Bamboo ($15)
- A shimmery teal eyeshadow like MAC Eyeshadow in Aquadisiac ($15) or Steamy ($15)
- A matte black liquid eyeliner like LORAC Front of the Line Pro ($22)
- A shimmery golden brown eyeshadow like MAC Soba ($15)
- A black mascara like MAC Mascara X in Black ($13)
- A matte red lipstick like MAC Lipstick in Chili ($14) or Russian Red ($14)
NOTE: I ended up using MAC Eyeshadow in Waternymph instead of the teal eyeshadows and MAC Mattene in Classic Dame instead of matte red lipsticks listed above. Both are limited edition and tricky to track down, but they’re similar to the colors mentioned.
Swatches from left to right: Too Faced Shadow Insurance, MAC Cream Colour Base in Pearl, MAC Eye Pencil in Coffee, MAC Eyeshadow in Brun, MAC Eyeshadow in Brownscript
From left to right: MAC Eyeshadow in Arena, MAC Eyeshadow in Waternymph, LORAC Front of the Line Pro Liner, MAC Eyeshadow in Soba
From left to right: MAC Mascara X in Black, MAC Mattene Lipstick in Classic Dame
Because the colors I’m wearing here on my eyes and lips are both kinda bright, I left my cheeks bare, but if you feel nekkid without blush, I bet you could wear something light and peachy on your cheeks like Philosophy Lit From Within Cream Blush in Bare Your Soul ($23).
The eyes
- Start by applying a thin layer of eyeshadow primer over your entire eyelid.
- Next, pat a thin layer of the creamy pearl eyeshadow onto the lid with a synthetic brush (synthetic brushes seem to work better when applying cream products) like the MAC 239 Eye Shader Brush.
- Using the dark brown pencil eyeliner, tap dots between the roots of the upper lashes. Then, draw a thick line all the way across the lash line; gently smudge the edges of the line with a MAC 239 brush.
- Still with the 239, pat some of your darkest brown eyeshadow on top of the liner, blending the colors just barely into the crease.
- With a MAC 224 Tapered Blending Brush, sweep the warm brown eyeshadow into the crease.
- Apply the light beige or peach eyeshadows under your brow bone with a MAC 217 Blending Brush, and use the same brush to soften any remaining harsh lines.
- For an extra pop of color, pat the teal eyeshadow over the lid and just barely into the crease with a MAC 217.
- Turn up the drama by drawing a line along the upper lash line with the black liquid eyeliner like Jenna suggested.
- To emphasize the lower lash line while still keeping it soft, draw a soft line along it with a MAC 219 Pencil Brush and the golden brown eyeshadow.
- Curl your lashes, and apply two coats of mascara to both the upper and lower lash lines.
- Wrap it up with two layers of matte red lipstick applied with a lip brush (I find them easier to control than tubes when I’m applying highly pigmented colors).
Badabing, badabang! That’s it. 🙂
So what was the highlight of your Tuesday?
Mine was bumping into my former boss from the literary agency in line at the post office. We caught up and made plans for lunch. Other than that, my day was blissfully uneventful. 🙂
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

Gorgeous!! Thanks bunches for the tutorial hon 🙂 I definitely prefer this look with the liner — which, for the record, you did an absolutely amazing job with. That line is *flawless*!
.-= Rae’s last blog post… I would give anything to give you my spoons. =-.
Karen says
Hi Rae,
I owe it all to the magic that is LORAC Front of the Line Pro. It’s seriously life changing!
How are you doing on this lovely Wednesday?
amy says
I like it better with the black liner too it adds more depth to bright colours and makes your lashes look thicker too. Arena, Bamboo and Soba are my favourite blending colours. Using the Area (peachy orange) and the teal colour together are gorgeous.

Karen says
Hi Amy,
I love those shades, too. Soba is one of the colors that I dismissed for so long because it looked so boring in the pan, but once you get it on your skin… WOW!
MichikoFliz says
This is absolutely gorgeous! I just tried this tutorial now and it looks fabulous! I will definitely do this look on Friday night. Hope I can pull it off with confidence!
Karen says
Hi MichikoFliz,
YAY! I’m so glad that it turned out well for you. What red did you use for your lips?
Stacie Wall says
You look great! But wow, that is alot of stuff…too bad I don’t have that much makeup! I love your tutorials!!!
Karen says
Hi Stacie Wall,
You could always do a couple of steps with what you have. Up until the teal this look is a pretty basic brown/smokey eye!
Vonvon says
Hi Karen,
Thanks for the tutorial. Very detailed. Can’t wait to try it out. 🙂

Hi Vonvon,
Yay! Let me know how it goes. 🙂 Happy Wednesday!
Laura Benedict says
Gorgeous photos, perfect tutorial–I could so use a paint-by-number palette like that on my lids. I think that with my blue eyes, though, I should probably stick with Gold Eyes and Coral lips!
My Tuesday highlight? Late breakfast at Panera with my DH.

Hi Laura Benedict,
Aww, I think you should try it at least once. The great thing about makeup is it always washes off!
Kate & Zena says
The highlight of my Tuesday? Coming home. It’s been a loooooooooooooong, rainy, drizzly, dreary day knowing I don’t have school tomorrow. Choir was fun but still, the overcast and rain always put a damper on my mood. The day seemed to go on forever today.
Oh, I must try this when I have time to play with make-up. I wore an eyelook that made my eyes look bigger today (a la pixiwoo!). I usually go neutral for school.
Karen says
Hi Kate & Zena,
Nice. I love playing up the eyes! The bigger, the better.
What’s on your plate for today? Studying?
Audrey says
I really want to try these red lips! How about that NARS jumbo lip pencil that you reviewed before – how would that compare to the MAC ones listed?
I only have MAC New York Apple – which is more of a coral-y/red, the MUA suggested it as an “intro to red lips”, LOL!
.-= Audrey’s last blog post… Yay for more Edward in the *new* New Moon trailer =-.
Karen says
Hi Audrey,
The NARS red would totally work. Honestly, I think it doesn’t really matter what red you do, as long as it looks good with your skin tone and is more on the matte side.
How are you liking New York Apple? I don’t have that one, but it sounds very intriguing.

Hi Blovet Beauty,
Do you wear a lot of teal? It’s such a fun color.
Happy Wednesday!
Jenna says
Yay!!! I’m so glad you liked my suggestion Karen. I think it looked great both ways, but I do like it more with the black eyeliner. And I love the way you winged it out a little bit. I’m definitely going to try to do this look myself!
Karen says
Hi Jenna,
Thanks again! The black liner totally makes the look pop. 🙂
Tiffany says
Great look, Karen! I think the highlight of my Tuesday was catching up on the season premiere of House! I love that tv shows are starting to come back! Maybe it will help fill the void left by True Blood…
Karen says
Hi Tiffany,
Me too! Did you watch the new Heroes? I think they got some new writers because it’s pretty darn good!
Eru says
I wish I could rock red lips like you do, Karen! Love the look 😀 it’s bold but very pretty!

Hi Eru,
Thanks hon! How are you? Are you having a good week?
Patti says
Hooray for the tutorial!
Unfortunately I don’t have nearly all the eyeshadow listed here but its still cool to see how to achieve the look-
Karen says
Hi Patti,
You could always do this with just browns, or perhaps replace the teal with another shade like purple, green or whatever you have in your stash. 🙂
Glad you liked this one!
Christina says
It does look fabulous on you, Karen. I would love to wear teal eye makeup, too, but like Laura mentioned I have blue eyes and I’m not sure if I could pull this look off.
The lips, though… I think I could do that. 🙂
Thanks for another great tutorial!

Hi Christina,
I think you could rock it. Maybe head to the drugstore and get a pan of teal there and try it just for fun? Nyx makes some great eyeshadows that are very affordable. You never know… you just might love it!
How’s your day going so far?
Kate & Zena says
Today? Reading and brainstorming ideas for my essays. I seem to do nothing but read and do essays on my days off. I don’t mind reading (it is a hobby) but textbook textbooks like my geography one is so boring!
All Women Stalker says
Did you say Heroes is good now? All right, I’ll have to watch it again then since we no longer have True Blood.
Oh yeah, will be linking to this tute.

Ooooh thats gorgeous!! I love how that turned out!! 😉
I’m always a bit scared to try brighter more colourful eyeshadows with my red lips, but I shall give it a go!! I love peachy shadows!! 😀
