- You might be wondering, “So what the heck is this Monday Poll thing anyway?”
Well, it isn’t much of a poll. It’s more just a constantly evolving (devolving?), somewhat random list of questions I’ve been putting out to readers every Monday morning for the past three years. I’ve always enjoyed reading your answers in the comments, and I hope you enjoy reading mine.
- Mood:
- If you celebrated Christmas, what were a couple of the gifts you gave or received?
- What’ve you been up to today?
- Three things you feel you’re quite good at?
- Any plans for New Year’s Eve?
- When was the last time you went ice skating?
- Weekly goals:
Just peachy, thank you very much. 🙂 I’ve been enjoying spending time with my family over the past few days, not that we’ve been up to very much. Just hanging out and lots of eating, but sometimes that’s all you need, ya know?
I did most of my shopping for the men in my life on a snarky site called thinkgeek.com. They sell a lot of great gizmos and gadgets, like flashlights that recharge when you shake them and tiny pocket multi-tools.
My folks got me a pretty stylish camera bag (the one up there at the top) from a company called Epiphanie. It’s padded, roomy and about a million times better than the tattered bag I’ve been toting around for the past couple of years.
Oh, where to begin… Nothing! And it’s been great. Just hanging out with El Hub and my in-laws at their new house in Redding, a town about four hours north of the San Francisco Bay. I slept in, had breakfast (Hawaiian sweet rolls and an over-easy egg) and spent the morning writing in my father-in-law’s office while El Hub played around with a Tivo. Yup, if I keep pushing myself this hard, I’m gonna pass out! 🙂
1) Pinching people with my toes, 2) falling asleep on planes, and 3) looking at half-empty glasses and seeing glasses that are half full.
Nah, not really. El Hub and I aren’t big partiers, so maybe just dinner someplace where we can see the fireworks.
Hmm… I know it’s been a while. At least five years. I remember going skating with my brother at the Embarcadero rink in downtown San Francisco one afternoon.
Boy, that was such a great day… Just me and my bro.
To continue eating way more than I should and to enjoy the last few days of 2011.
Super quick Monday Poll today, but I couldn’t allow myself to break the chain, what with this being Monday Poll No. 200!
Isn’t that incredible? Two hundred Monday Polls? Wow, right? That’s a pretty big number.
Our little group is getting ready to grab a bite to eat for lunch at a local diner here, but I’ll be reading your poll answers from my phone, hopefully over a plate of yummy fries…
Mmm… fries.
- To complete the Monday Poll, just copy the following list, and paste it with your answers in the comments.

Rita says
1. Mood: Tired!
2. If you celebrated Christmas, what were a couple of the gifts you gave or received? I gave a book and a calendar, and I got socks and roasted almonds.
3. What’ve you been up to today? Oh boy, an ordeal. We had a terrible storm, and all the trains to my hometown were cancelled. A replacement bus that came to the railway station could only take 9 (!) persons, the driver did not know the way to the next station, and he passed the following one (luckily no one was going there). My trip lasted more than 2 hours instead of 1,25 hours, but I’m home!
4. Three things you feel you’re quite good at? Things I do with hands, linguistics things, spending my money!
5. Any plans for New Year’s Eve? Nope. Nada.
6. When was the last time you went ice skating? 20 years ago?
7. Weekly goals: Getting back to normal life.
Karen says
Hi Rita,
Bummer that it took so long, but glad you were able to make it home. I bet you’re happy to be sleeping in your own bed again!
jen. says
1. Mood: Relaxed…. Christmas was fun and everything, but I’m glad it’s over.

4. Three things you feel you’re quite good at? cooking, knitting, and wrapping gifts.
5. Any plans for New Year’s Eve? Not that I know of. I’m not a big New Year’s Eve kinda gal.
6. When was the last time you went ice skating? I think maybe in junior high? I’m in Arizona so there aren’t a lot of ice skating opportunities around here.
7. Weekly goals: Finish the scarf I’m making for a friend I used to work with, clean my house so I can get a fresh start for New Year’s.
Have a great Boxing Day and Happy New Year!

We give presents for another holiday in the beginning of december, but me and my little brother got a game for the Wii 🙂
3. What’ve you been up to today?
I had my grandparents over, and that is always special. It is quite sad, because we know that their lives are going to change dramatically in the near future because they’re all over 80 years old. But we celebrated it and it will be a good memory.

7. Weekly goals:
Karen says
Hi Tania,
Your Hello Kitty pink microwave sounds AWESOME!
Heidi says
1. Mood:
Melancholy. I always get that post-Christmas “blah” feeling.
2. If you celebrated Christmas, what were a couple of the gifts you gave or received?
I gave my Mom a beautiful scarf that a woman from my church made, and I received a journal. I’m going to try journaling in the new year. I’ve never been able to commit to it in the past and I really need to get my feelings down on paper.
3. What’ve you been up to today?
Went to the mall with my Mom so that she could get me a black cardigan I’ve been wanting.
4. Three things you feel you’re quite good at?
I pick out really good gifts and cards for people, I’m very good at combining colors (in clothing and makeup), and I have a knack for making people feel at ease.
5. Any plans for New Year’s Eve?
Not for New Year’s Eve. For New Year’s Day I have plans to attend a “burning bowl ceremony” (I know, that sounds SO California). It’s really quite nice. Everyone writes down things they want to release and let go of in the new year (negative emotions, etc), and puts it in a bowl with lit candle and watch it burn.
6. When was the last time you went ice skating?
Never.
7. Weekly goals:
Start journaling, and continue the job hunt if I don’t end up getting the one I interviewed for last week (still haven’t heard back).
Karen says
Hi Heidi,
Put Missy to work and get that cat to give you some comforting post-Christmas purrs and snuggles!
I totally LOL’d when you said that the “burning bowl ceremony” sounds SO California. That’s totally Marin county… and yes, I’d probably enjoy it.
As for journaling, I’m a huge fan and try to do it every day. I do this writing exercise called free writing — have you ever heard of it? It’s basically where you just write at fast as you can about whatever comes to mind for a specified amount of time (I usually do 10 minutes) without censoring yourself. It’s very therapeutic.
Rachael says
1. Mood: Tired
2. If you celebrated Christmas, what were a couple of the gifts you gave or received? The fiance and I got a Dyson vacuum. I gave a lot of knitting.
3. What’ve you been up to today? Cleaning and putting away all the new stuff we got. I’m running out of space to put all my new kitchen gadgets.
4. Three things you feel you’re quite good at? Knitting, not getting lost/directions, target shooting.
5. Any plans for New Year’s Eve? Finish any bit of packing left for Hawaii since we leave the next day.
6. When was the last time you went ice skating? A few weeks ago. Every winter, the Cleveland Indians turn their field into a veritable winter wonderland, complete with a mile long ice skating rink, sledding from the bleacher seats down onto the field, and a hockey rink. I almost got taken out by their mascot while trying to teach Anthony to skate.
7. Weekly goals: Laundry and selfish knitting
Karen says
Hi Rachael,
Yay, finally time for your Hawaiian vacation! Do you have your wardrobe already planned?
Rachael says
Nope. I do have what I want to knit on the flights, any down time at the resort, and when I ride around in a golf cart while Anthony plays 18 holes.
I do know that a fair chunk of my wardrobe will have some form of orange cat hair and black and white dog hair.
Wendy says
1. Mood: Happy. My son came home from the Army for good. He never has to go back to Afghanistan or anywhere in the Middle East ever again!!!
2. If you celebrated Christmas, what were a couple of the gifts you gave or received?
Gave: My six children gave me NO help this year with a wish list. The three youngest asked for maybe three things each. The three oldest didn’t ask for anything and couldn’t give me any ideas. I’ve never seen a group of children not want anything! I managed to find some nice gifts they couldn’t refuse: Urban Decay eyeliner set, computer, ipod touch, cold hard cash…
Received: My youngest daughter handmade Christmas cards with a long note to each family member. She’s so innocent and wrote exactly what she was thinking which made for some comical material. We took turns reading our letter aloud and laughed till we cried.
3. What’ve you been up to today? Packing and driving home.
4. Three things you feel you’re quite good at? 1. Delegating. I am fully aware of the demise of dictators this past year as I am reminded daily from my family. 2. Baking. My family refuses to eat cheesecake at the Cheesecake Factory because it doesn’t taste good. 3. Sudoku Evil. I try to look for patterns instead of thinking or, God forbid, counting!
5. Any plans for New Year’s Eve? Stay at home far away from drunken crazies!
6. When was the last time you went ice skating? 14 years ago. My eldest son held my hand and helped me until I felt comfortable with stopping. I was never so glad for all the ice skating lessons I paid for when he was younger!
7. Weekly goals: Get my brows waxed and a pedicure.
Chat again next year. 🙂
Karen says
Hi Wendy,
You must be thrilled that your son is home! 🙂 Have a wonderful last few days of 2011… are you ready for the new year?
Bronwyn says
1. Mood:
2. If you celebrated Christmas, what were a couple of the gifts you gave or received?
We celebrated it though it was a bit subdued being on holidays in a Muslim country (even though they do celebrate it in a sort of way). I got a stuffed toy I believe is supposed to look like a pug, and I gave my dad a bottle of rum I bought in Duty Free cuz such things are a little too expensive in the shops here.
3. What’ve you been up to today?
I’m cheating a bit so it’s Tuesday and the day hasn’t really begun… I’m going to Sea World in Jakarta today though. I’m not particularly keen for it but my friend is big into zoos and the like.
4. Three things you feel you’re quite good at?
Going with the flow. We were going to, but now we are going to… yep good I don’t care.
Getting along with the ‘annoying’ people. Unless you are cruel, at me, its pretty hard to get me offside and harder still to keep me offside.
Having the confidence to wear the ridiculous just because I enjoy it.
5. Any plans for New Year’s Eve?
That’s what? 4-5 days away? Who knows.
6. When was the last time you went ice skating?
2 years though I missed 2 or 3 invites from a friend in Oct and Nov… I didn’t mind overly I always come away from ice skating worse off…
7. Weekly goals:
To get to the gym at least once.
Not end up hating everybody I’ve been forced into close quarters with for this 3 week holiday.
Karen says
Hi Bronwyn,

Suri says

2. If you celebrated Christmas, what were a couple of the gifts you gave or received? My mom got me the Instyler which I am very excited to use and hubby got me a pair of Diamond earrings 😀
3. What’ve you been up to today? I was very lazy today and stayed in my pjs until 4pm watching tv and laying on the couch.
4. Three things you feel you’re quite good at? Making people laugh, picking the most expensive things in a store-any store!, saying the right things at the right times.
5. Any plans for New Year’s Eve? Don’t know yet. I think just dinner somewhere nice.
6. When was the last time you went ice skating? Never been!
7. Weekly goals: Eat, eat and eat until the 1st when I will concentrate on being healthy again, declutter and clean my apt and catch up on rest while I’m on vacation.
Happy New Year!!!
Tania says
I’ve been wanting that camera bag for so long. That’s a nice present. Happy New Year to you!
Kate & Zena says
1. Mood:
Kinda tired. Christmas Eve wiped me out.
2. If you celebrated Christmas, what were a couple of the gifts you gave or received?
I gave my Grandpa a stuffed puppy dog toy that I made and two new pages for his “Memories of Grandpa” book (I made that for him on his birthday and I’m trying to make a new page every Christmas and birthday). I gave my aunt a cookbook for dogs with nutrition notes because her dog got pancreatitis (they gave her all the wrong foods!) which she loved.
My favorite gift was from my grandpa; he got me the entire series (so far) of Chi’s Sweet Home, which is a comic from Japan (even though it was flipped from it’s original format, right to left, to left to right) about a kitten named Chi! It’s about Chi’s adventures in the world, in her perspective, so it has really cute dialogue. It’s very, very cute and very funny! (I think you would like it actually.) He normally doesn’t spend that much on me (it was 7 volumes and they run at about $13 each), but he must have known how much I love the series, so he bought me all of them. My other one was my Eddie Bauer slippers from my mom.
3. What’ve you been up to today?
Sitting around watching various marathons on television. Seriously. I’ve been THAT lazy.
4. Three things you feel you’re quite good at?
Baking, training dogs, and having very expensive taste when it comes to trinkets.
5. Any plans for New Year’s Eve?
Reading my books, most likely! Who cares about the stupid ball coming down when you have a book that screaming, “READ ME!!!!”
6. When was the last time you went ice skating?
Two years ago. Lucky for me, I retain how to figured skate pretty well. I can’t skate backwards anymore (which was scary anyway), but I can still skate fast!
7. Weekly goals:
Chill out!

Karen, I loved your Christmas photos. Yay for ham!
Okay, I’m a little late to post but here’s my list for you all:
1. Mood: Just had my annual physical and it went well. Turns out I have small blood vessels in my feet so that’s why they are always cold. I live in New England so one natural solution to this medical problem is to wear fuzzy boots. Done and done.
2. If you celebrated Christmas, what were a couple of the gifts you gave or received? I got beautiful grey moccasins from my in-laws along with a sweater hand knit in Peru. My Brother always goes overboard at Banana Republic so that was super awesome too.
3. What’ve you been up to today? Doctor’s, worked from home (a rare thing!), and came into the office late. Now I’m catching up on blogs and eating my lunch (Starbucks sandwich–it was that or McDonalds and I think I made the right choice). 🙂
4. Three things you feel you’re quite good at? Photography (oh man, you should see my photos from my Iceland trip earlier this year–amazing), being a good friend and wife, baking/cooking (making my husband try new foods). 🙂
5. Any plans for New Year’s Eve? Heck yah. Okay, we’re staying over at a friends with 6 other couples. Last year at around 3am the kitchen turned into an 80s night club complete with knee-bruises from sliding on the tile floor like it was 1985.
6. When was the last time you went ice skating? This is in fact my New Year’s resolution. To sell my old skates (size 9 anyone?) and refurb an old pair. Switching back to leather. I think it’s illegal to live in New England and not skate (hahaha, kidding).
7. Weekly goals: Get back on my plan at myfitnesspal.com 1,200 calories/day NET so around 1,700 taken in to lose 1lb/week and get back to my pre-holiday weight. My doctor is healthy with my current weight but I really want my various JCrew and Land’s End Canvas pants to fit. Booo yah!
