I guess dreams really do come true. The upcoming MAC Venomous Villains collection has me in such a tizzy that I’ve been drawing all morning long! A MAC Cosmetics/Disney collaboration? Um, are you kidding me!? Talk about a recipe for greatness.
Speaking of recipes, here’s one for today — a tutorial on how to draw Tabs in the Disney style (or as close as I can come to it). It’s his tribute to MAC Venomous Villains. 🙂
UPDATE, 8-15-2010: For the inside scoop on the MAC Venomous Villains collection, check out MAC Venomous Villains: 101 Things You Didn’t Know
Have fun! If you decide to give it a try, go on and send me a picture of your artwork so I can show it to Tabs.
Step 1
Simple is the name of the game here. Are you ready? Grab your favorite pen or pencil, and start by drawing one big circle for Tabs’ head, adding in the facial guidelines after that. Next, draw a line for his neck and two more circle shapes for his chest and his bottom. Finish the step with the remaining lines for his legs and tail.
Step 2
In this step we’re going to draw the overall shape and outline of his body by following the path of the red lines. Start by sketching the shape of Tabs’ face and his snout as shown. Then, add his neck and legs. Finally, build the shape of his tail with another line.
Step 3
We’re half way there! You’re doing a great job, btw. 🙂 Start this step by drawing a v-shaped line for the top of his head and the beginning of his ears. Next, add his eyebrows (and make them fussy!) and the shapes of his eyes. Then, give him a tiny nose and mouth. Finish the lining for the tail, and add the markings for his furry chest. Since tabby got a big ol’ booty, give him a shapely behind (ha!), and draw in his feet as shown.
Step 4
We’re at the finish line! This is your last drawing step. Now, complete the lining of the body, then the ears and his eyes. Give his eyes some pupils, and draw in his whiskers (his are quite long). Add in the finishing touches to his legs, and draw the last two paws. Finally, erase all of the interior guidelines you drew in the first step.
Step 5
Tada! What a great job. 🙂 The last thing left to do is to color him in (this step is optional). His chest and paws are more orangey than the rest of his body, which is a mix of grays and browns — typical tabby pattern — and his eyes are bright green. His nose is sort of a burnt orange.
Well, that’s all for now! Tabs and I hope you enjoyed this MAC Venomous Villains tutorial. It’s a bit different than the types of tutorials I’m sure we’ll see when the collection comes out (CAN’T WAIT!!!).
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

I know it’s a silly question, but did you use a mouse or a pen thingy?

Karen says
Hey Rica,
I use a pen thingy — the Wacom Bamboo. It’s about $80 at amazon.com!

So cool! I have that Bamboo thing, and have never mastered it. This reminds me of some books I had when I was a kid of how to draw cartoon animals. 🙂

Melissa’s comment reminded me of my favorite Superbowl commercial of all time. Karen, I’m sure you’ve seen this since it’s really old, but I never tire of the Kitty Herders…..

LOL Tabs! This is great, Karen–nice drawing skills! Do you draw your “Saturday Surfing” banners with the young women yourself too? They always look so good!
Doreen says
And I love the snake from Robin Hood!
Karen says
Hi Doreen,
Aw, thanks! It depends. About half the time I use photographs that I’ve taken for the Saturday Surfing and Monday Poll banners, but when the images are illustrations, they’re usually stock photography vector graphics that I purchase, like clipart, and then modify with text or by adding other elements in photoshop or with a program called skitch.

This is just fantastic. Would you mind telling me which software you used for this one? I so love the cartoon tabs 🙂

Hi, Charan. Sure, I used Adobe Illustrator to draw the lines and Photoshop to color them in. Thanks for visiting! Have a great Memorial Day weekend.

I wish I could draw. I tried this and it looked horrible when I did it. I’ve never been an artist. 🙁
