WOW! Where does the time go? Today it occurred to me that the MAC Venomous Villains collection’s just a hop, skip and a jump away (September 30).
Can I get a WOOT, WOOT! (and an evil cackle) from all the MAC-aholics in the hood? 😀
The collection, a collaboration between Disney and MAC, features four separate color stories, each one based on a different Disney villain — Cruella de Vil, of 101 Dalmatians fame; Maleficent, from Sleeping Beauty; the Evil Queen, scourge of Snow White; and Dr. Facilier, from The Princess and the Frog (find out more about the whole collection here).
Despite the subject matter and cartoon imagery, these Trix aren’t for kids. The colors are decidedly grown up, and the products MAC caliber through and through.
Today I took Cruella’s color story out for a spin with a softened version of a classic black cat eye and paired it with rosy cheeks and a glossy red lip.
MAC Venomous Villains Cruella de Vil makeup clockwise from lower left: Eyeshadow in Sweet Joy, Eyeshadow in De-Vil, Eyeshadow in Carbon, Powder Blush in Darkly My Dear, Lipstick in Heartless, Lipstick in Innocence, Beware!, Beauty Powder in Her Own Devices
Starting with my eyes, I swept the shimmery copper De-Vil eyeshadow into the crease. Because the shade’s so pigmented, I didn’t use much. Just a tad, applied with a light touch. Next, I patted shimmery beige Sweet Joy on my lid and along the brow bone. For my cat eyes, I used matte black Carbon eyeshadow as a liner, drawing it along the lash and water lines (both the uppers and lowers).
The cheeks, I kept subtle, using matte rosy brown Powder Blush in Darkly My Dear on the apples and peachy pink Beauty Powder in Her Own Devices on my upper cheek bones (for a quiet sheen).
Because the eyes and cheeks aren’t that loud, I added a POP of color to my lips, mixing creamy peachy pink Lipstick in Innocence, Beware! to creamy red Lipstick in Heartless, topping them off with shimmery red Lipglass in Wacked Ways. 🙂
If you ever have trouble drawing smooth lines with liquid liner, this approach gets around having to work with funky brushes and pen tip applicators. I think black powder eyeshadows applied with a brush (here I used the $6 Sonia Kashuk Bent Liner Brush) and used as liner are more forgiving than liquid liners. The lines have a faint blur to them, which can make mistakes a little tougher to spot. 🙂
There you have it — my Thursday makeup. Too bad I didn’t do anything devilish with it on, LOL!
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

I can’t wait for VV!!! I use the same bent eyeliner brush by Sonia Kashuk, and I must say it is FAB and is easy to use. Definitely one of my HG brushes.
Karen says
Isn’t that brush awesome? The best part about it is it’s just $6. 🙂
Jenn says
The lips are fabulous! 😀
Karen says
I love this lip combo too. You just can’t go wrong with a nice red! 🙂
BTW, happy almost Friday!
Beatrice says
omg! where did the time go?! I’m still trying to save up for this collection (though very very very hard when Ulta’s just a hop skip and a jump away from my house >>) Love the look and I can’t wait to get my hands on this collection! I just hope that it doesn’t sell out in seconds like the UD Naked Palette. . .
Karen says
Oh, that’s dangerous! Sephora’s a five minute drive away from my place and it’s a challenge to not be in there every day!
What are you looking forward to most in Venomous Villains?
Heidi says
Must get that De-Vil shadow. I love to do a copper color in the crease! Fabulous look, Karen!
Karen says
Hey Heidi,
This is a gorgeous copper! If you wear the shade well you could also pop it on the lid for a quick wash o’ color. 🙂
Happy Friday!
Lena says
I’ve been reading this blog for a long time but today I just had to say- your undereye area is flawless! What concealer are you using?
Karen says
Hi Lena,
Wow, you’ve got a good eye. I added something new into the mix yesterday — Trish McEvoy Line Refiner. It’s this moisturizer/line filler that I applied beneath my usual TimeBalm concealer. 🙂
Yanna says
OMG this collection is the best, I want it to be in stores right now! In belgium it comes out the 9th of October..so I still have a little time to save..

i love those eyes karen!! keep going with your fab reviews on MAC!!
Karen says
Hi Tiffany,
So glad to hear you’re enjoying these looks!
Are you planning on picking up anything from Venomous Villains?
Nina says
Ohh i thought I was just gonna want Bite of an Apple blush but Darkly My Dear is nice too! <3
Karen says
It’s a beautiful blush. Like the copper eyeshadow it’s very, VERY pigmented. For the look above I used a skunk brush and a light hand to apply.
Nina says
I lurve it already — and I havent even seen it yet! LOL ….
astrid says
SO pretty :). I’m going to try it out with some dupes. Especially love your idea of making the cat eye look with eyeshadow+bent eyeliner brush instead… it looks prettier, I’m liking less harsh lines.
Karen says
Hi Astrid,
It’s a softer take on the cat eye, for sure! Do you have the Sonia Brush? It’s the BEST!
astrid says
I can’t find Sonia Kashuk in Germany :(. But I do have a bent eyeliner brush from a local brand. Gotta try if it works out, although with my skill level it’ll take a million try before it looks like you anyways.
Kim says
Wow – I am totally amazed by your shadow-as-liner skills! This is probably the dumbest question of all time, but do you have to dampen the brush or do you just use it dry?
Btw, I love the fur prop for the villainous look and had to laugh at the picture progression. From “come on… I’m a bit villainous” to “um, maybe not 100% evil” to “OK, what can I say? The nice girl shines through!”. 🙂
Karen says
Hi Kim,
That’s not a dumb question at all. You can do both. 🙂 If you want a more intense line, wet the brush; if you want something softer, like in this look, leave it dry.
Happy Friday, btw! What are your plans for the weekend?
Kim says
Thanks! I’ll do some experimenting! 🙂
It’ll be a pretty busy weekend. I’m having dinner tonight with some out-of-town sales reps. The boys have a soccer game tomorrow morning (and I coach their team) and Sunday will be their first First Communion class, which means mass at 8 AM for us. Then I’m playing in a golf tournament to benefit our local High School Golf and Girls’ Basketball teams at noon.
Is it obvious that I’m whining about not being able to sleep in at all? 🙂 The Husband is out of town until the end of the month, so I’ll be pretty busy between work and the boys!
Are you doing anything fun? I’ll be envious if you say you’re having a relaxing couple of days! 🙂
Appu says
Whoa! I love this look 🙂 u look super sexaaay 🙂 Can’t wait for the collection to launch…hope nothing sells out a fast as MSF Stereo Rose!
Karen says
What are you looking forward to the most, Appu?
Appu says
The lipglosses, e/s, shadesticks 🙂 The nail shades look good too, but I don’t think i ll get them anyways 🙂 Def’ly getting the glosses and lipsticks at least for the packaging 🙂
Appu says
Sorry, meant the Greasepaint Stick 😉
Michelle says
Love the look!! And thanks for the tip about the bent eyeliner brush. Need to get it stat!!
Do you like the Innocence, Beware lippie by itself? Is it a nude pink? I have a thing for pinky nudes!
Karen says
I like it, but I would probably do a nude liner and clear gloss with it. If you want to see a lip swatch of Innocence, Beware by itself scroll down to number 75-81. in this post (it also has swatches and pictures of the entire collection):

Taffy says
I can’t decide if I should get Briar Rose or Darkly My Dear because I am seriously rolling my change to buy from this collection!
Karen says
Hi Taffy,
Both are very pretty shades. If it helps any Darkly My Dear is *very* pigmented — I had to use a skunk brush and a light touch to apply.
Trude says
So pretty! Love the lip color on you!
Lana says
Ooh what jacket is that/ where did you get it? It’s awesome!!!
Karen says
Hi Lana,
That’s an ancient faux fur jacket I bought at Bebe about a billion years ago (roughly 2001). It’s so crazy and makes me look like a muppet but I looooove it!
NeicyRox says
I simply CAN NOT wait….wait…wait until this collection comes out. At first I was only going to get it because Disney and I were like >this< growing up, but I fell in love with the colors.
My poor pockets are crying already. 🙁
But you look HAWT!
Trisha says
You look beautiful! I especially like that lip color on you. Totally Cruella. 😉
Sherri says
