I firmly believe that life’s too short to waste wearing boring brown eyeliners (or, on an unrelated note, wearing shoes in summer).
Today’s inductee into the hallowed halls of MAC Unsung Heroics is called Teddy, and when it comes to boring, he’s anything but. Teddy is a MAC Eye Kohl ($14.50) pencil, an intensely rich, dark bronzy brown with subtle golden shimmer, and it’s that shimmer that takes Teddy from the bored-room to the bedroom best room (haha! oops, bad pun).
I think I use Teddy almost as often as MAC Powersurge. It’s one of those colors that always seems appropriate, day or night, and it totally hits the spot when I want to draw extra attention to my eyes but don’t feel like wearing basic black.
Its soft, creamy texture glides along my lash and water lines, defining the shape of my eyes. Every so often I’ll even wear it as a base by smudging it onto my lids; other times I might layer it beneath powder shadows, where I think it looks particularly cute with bronzy golds like MAC Woodwinked.
My favorite thing about Teddy? He gets along with everyone. 🙂 Yup, I think Teddy looks fantastic on a wide range of skin tones, from lighter lovelies to dark brown divas.
Some gals seem to think he “gets around” (aka migrates), but Teddy stays still on me all day long. Setting him with a powder shadow should encourage him to behave.

I’m not that into brown eyeliner, but Teddy looks lovely!
Jennifer says
I love Teddy! I first got him from the Blonde Brunette Redhead collection, and we’ve been going steady ever since! 😀 It’s my everyday liner – I whack on some shimmery beige shadow, something a little darker in the crease, and Teddy on the outer half of my lower waterlines, and that’s that! And the shade really is great for everyone – I’ve got ~NW15 skin, so black liners look super harsh, but Teddy is just warm and soft enough that it looks very flattering.
In conclusion: I, too, <3 Teddy!
Jen says
What a lovely brown! Unfortunately, I have way too many eyeliners, and I’m trying to downsize… It’s not working. :S
Jessi says
Karen, you have the best handwriting ever. I think from now on you should hand write your blog entries instead of typing them. It might not be super practical, but it would be unique! 🙂
Lindsay says
Every liner but the waterproof liners by MAC migrate on me. I have hooded lids though so I have to have waterproof everything or else my liner smudges into my crease.
Tracy says
I heart Teddy too! One of the best brown eyeliners out there!
Rae says
Mmm, I <3 how Teddy looks on your skintone! (He's cute on mine, but not neaaarly this gorgeous.) I do love the creamy texture, but I find that I do end up with a bit of liner under my lower lashline (aka not where it's supposed to be) by the end of the day – but for the gorgeous colour, I can cope 😉
Beatrice says
Dawww I love the name of that eyeliner lol it’s so cute XD very pretty as well 🙂
Iram Imtiaz says
Oh that looks so good, I want to buy it now 🙂
Nina says
ohhh … why oh why do i not own this hidden gem? 🙂
i want it!
Chris25 says
I own this and keep it in my pro kit. Everything you said about it is spot on!
Ariana says
something about brown with golden shimmer it just makes it look all classy and pretty
Emmaline says
I adore Teddy. I have about a dozen brown eyeliners, but this is my hg brown liner. He has enough red undertones to make my hazel eyes look really green. I find black just looks too harsh, makes my lashes look shorter, and my eyes smaller. Teddy really opens them up. I don’t have a problem with him moving around.
ReneeT says
I think this was one of my first MAC products ever…I have yet to find one that makes me melt like Teddy.

I’m obsessed with this rich, deep, bronze color! Love it!
Marian says
I’m wearing Teddy today!
Styrch says
Teddy is such a MUST HAVE! I’m so glad to see you put this here. I love to use it for a smokey brown eye. It has so much dimension. It’s just LOVE!
Elle says
I have worn my Teddy down to a little nub. It is time for a new one. And you DO have awesome handwriting!
For the love of life says
Lovely color! <3
tanveer says
I recently got this, & am loving it 🙂
Michelle says
I have this color and love it — but unfortunately, it migrates all over the place in my inner corners. I think because my eyes water quite a bit. I hope I can find a primer that really makes it stay in place!
Megan says
This is gorgeous–like UD’s 24/7 in Bourbon, but just a smidge cooler on the brown. Love it.
Ginger says
How does Teddy compare (color wise) with UD 24/7 liners? Is it similar to Corrupt or Bourbon?
Chris25 says
I own Bourbon. It is lighter than Teddy.
Makeup Morsels says
haha I love your MAC Unsung Heroes posts 🙂 I’ve heard quite a bit about MAC Teddy, and the color looks so rich and gorgeous in your swatch photo. I guess I will have to go visit the MAC store soon!
Sugar says
I love MAC pencils on my waterlines (they never move around), but maaan, are they shifty when applied as a base.
The other day, I had to do a quick look by using the stuff I had in my emergency makeup bag. I didn’t have eyeshadow with me so I just figured I’d pop a thin layer of my dark green technakohl over my lid, buff it with my fingers and be done with it.
By the end of the night I discovered with horror that I had two dark green lines in my creases. That never happens with other kohls I’ve used!
Fieran says
The only brown liner I have from MAC is Stubborn Brown that an MUA recommended to me years ago. I really don’t like it to be honest as it gets lost on my NW43 skin. I haven’t tried Teddy yet but I think I know what you mean about using it when you don’t feel like black. I use brown mascara from time to time and it looks more subdued and subtle. I use it when I wear glasses.
Inaya says
Oooo. Do a Mac twig review next please. That photo had me intrigued
Erin says
I love MAC eye kohls and don’t own this one. I’ll definitely have to check it out, thanks for posting!
Rene says
Thanks!!! I’ve been looking for a great dark brown liner! I’ll add this to my ever growing “must buy” list! 🙂
Shefali says
My holy grail brown eyeliner. Hands down. ‘Nuff said 🙂

Kristina says
yummy! just ordered myself some off ebay 🙂
GeriBerry says
Oh Ms. Karen, more often than not I run out to the MAC counter and buy your unsung hero of the moment… I can never have too many brown eyeliners.
Stephanie says
I love Teddy too! But I think you have to have the right skincolor/tone to pull this one off.
Shauna says
This was one of the first eyeliners I ever purchased at MAC. It’s still my favorite Brown eyeliner, and could not agree with you more on this 🙂
Issa says
this is indeed a very nice color! 🙂
Jen in VA says
I’ve used Teddy for at least a decade now…yes, it’s a pick me up brown bronze that I think every brown eyed and blue eyed chica needs to own or at least try.
Alexandra says
Ive got teddy its a beautiful colour, but mine doesnt seem to glide on well, unlike my smoulder which does.Perhaps i need to warm it up a little,
vanessa says
What powder do you like to set the shadow with?
