Am I way too easily amused for my own good? Survey says, “Probably.” For instance, I continue to get a huge kick out of mucking up names. Around here, Trader Joe’s is Traitor Joe’s, Target is Tar-ghay, and Whole Foods is affectionately (not) referred to as Whole Paycheck.
Lame? Yes. But also hilarious to moi. 🙂
And now I’m doing it with makeup, too. I’ve heard the peeps at a MAC counter pronounce today’s Unsung Hero, MAC Dubonnet Lipstick ($14.50), as “Doo-bow-nay,” but I like to call it “DEW-bonnet” instead.
Sorry! I can’t help it, even if I am messing with the moniker of one of the greatest reds in the MAC permanent line.
Scratch that — I think it’s one of the GREATEST MAC REDS OF ALL TIME! Sure, Russian Red usually gets the spotlight (hey, if it was good enough for Madge…), but Dubonnet also deserves mad love.
This warm reddish berry has a creamy finish, and I think it looks beyond great on gals with warm skin tones and/or yellow undertones. Doesn’t matter where you reside in the rainbow, either — pale, tan or dark — Dubonnet de-livers.
I can’t remember — have you worn Russian Red before? If you have and thought that it looked a little wonky on you (might have been due to the blue undertones), Dubonnet could be the MAC red para ti.
No worries about wear time, either. I can apply Dubonnet first thing in the morning and do Tabs’ bidding until about 3 or 4 (“OH, three or four!” Remember that Looney Tunes ep?) before I even have to think about a touch-up.
How many lumps do you want?
It can be a little drying, though, so you might want to prep your lips first with your favorite lip balm.
Seriously… I know that some red lipsticks can be a little scary, but you can totally DEW-bonnet. I know you can! 🙂
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen
P.S. Oh, can I borrow your phone? Just for a second. I just want to see if — oh, look at that! It does have a camera. That’s great because it means you can enter the 2011 Breast Cancer Awareness Month Sign Project and Giveaway right now (haha… smoove).

Antonia at Swedish Love Affair says
Wow, it looks so impeccably classy on you!
Karen says
Thanks, Antonia. I bet you could rock this color too!
Rae // theNotice says
Dubonnet was *made* for you, Karen! I get a lot of… well, brownish-orange undertones when I wear it, depending on the lighting. It’s not UNflattering, per se, but it’s not nearly as pretty on me as it is on you!
Loving the Unsung Heroes series, by the way ^^ (Loving and hating – I am resolutely trying to stick to my low-buy, and you are soooo not helping there :P)
Karen says
Low buy is no fun… I’m going to play the devil on your shoulder and say BREAK IT, BREAK IT, BREAK IT!!!
Beauty and Bows says
Beautiful colour! I’m loving red lips at the moment.

Karen says
What are some of your favorite reds?
Shubana says
You made me want this lipstick. But, I must wait until I move back to civilization. Until then.. daisy dukes and chap stick 🙁
Karen says
Oh noes! Are red lips not popular where you live? I think you should wear them anyway and call your look classic and inspired by the 1940s. 🙂
Shubana says
On the plane ride from Montreal to Oklahoma, we did a layover in Chicago. They asked us to unpack our style there as it wasn’t needed where we were going 😛
Karen says
LOL! How long will you be there? Are you visiting for work, school?
nlinton says
I got married in this color. I need to buy again just for the memories. Love it.
Karen says
Hi Nlinton,
Gorgeous. This a beautiful shade to say wear when you say “I Do”. What did the rest of your makeup look like?
Nalina says
This was actually my very first MAC purchase, and my first red lipstick! I love it, and it’s a creamier formula than Russian Red. Brootifuls.
Karen says
Ahh, what a great MAC first! 🙂
Heidi says
This might work for me. Reds with bluish undertones ALWAYS turn a very unflattering fuschia on me, which is not a good look for me.
Karen says
I hope it does. Next time you hit up the MAC store/counter check it out! Who knows? It could be your dream red!
Jessi says
Oooh, this red is gorgeous on you! I’m slowly getting the nerve to wear bold red lips in public, but I’m taking it slow. I’m progressing though! I used to think even Viva Glam Cyndi was too bold for me, but now I’m comfortable enough to wear it.
Karen says
You can do it, Jessi. Small baby steps… How about taking the tube and just dabbing it on your lips to make a stain so you get just a hint of red? Then, when you get more comfortable you can work your way up to a more opaque look.
Chris25 says
Karen, you are hilarious! I’m going to send in a photo, but Rocky and Jazz will be in the pic, because I’m camera shy.
Oh yeah, and you’re totally an enabler. I live near a MAC store, and every time I try to resist going in there, you post another MAC Unsung Hero. Totally not fair. 😀
Karen says
Chris! Tabs is beyond excited about seeing the kitties! 🙂
Silka says
This is the red “para ti”…… hermoso!
Karen says
Gracias, Silka. 🙂
Marian says
I think I need this!
Karen says
Yes you do! 🙂
Jen W says
This was my VERY FIRST RED! And I love it to this day, the slight brown base makes it so flattering across most skin tones IMHO.
Karen says
Every girl remembers their first red! Mine was NARS Dolce Vita… ahh!
Vonvon says
I bought after meeting Victor Cembelin last year, thats his favorite red! and I happened to find it at the CCO when I was in the US.
I rarely use it, but it’s always there for me to see on my dresser.now it’s getting cooler again…. Perhaps I should wear that today! 😉
Karen says
Did you end up wearing it today, Vonvon? I hope so!
Celestine says
I love your red lipstick..This is a beautiful shade of lipstick ..ALWAYS turn a very unflattering fuschia on me, which is not a good look for me.
Karen says
Hi Celestine,
Hope you get the chance to try it soon. It’s even more beautiful in person.
Nina says
i own dubonnet but it intimidates me and ive only used it once (to attend a wedding reception) … i love the color and how luminous it makes my face look but it feels too much for the summer …
ill have to pull it out soon!
Karen says
Please take it out and give it another try, Nina! It is so perfect for fall. 🙂
Nina says
yes’m! 🙂
Ruchita says
Wow, that is a gorgeous red! I don’t usually weaar dark lips, but this is one I would try.
I’m easily amused as well. Target is Le Tarjay, Taco Bell is Crotcho Smell. Being in my mid-thirties has not changed my adolescent sense of humor. 🙂
NeenaJ says
Reading “Crotcho Smell” just made me snort my tea! I, too, have the sense of humor of a 12 year old boy!
Karen says
I used to call Taco Bell “Taco Hell.”
NeenaJ says
It looks like a really red version of Paramount. Will add to my “want” list. Can’t believe that it hasn’t been on my radar!
Hubs and I call Harris Teeter (grocery store) Hairy Peter, if it makes you feel any better.
Karen says
You will love this color, Neena. It’s elegant and classic!
And LOL re: Hairy Peter. 🙂
Kim says
You know I’m not a red kind of gal, but the Bonnet (hee hee) would be more my color than Russian Red, I think. I do better with berries. 🙂
Hey! I DO have a camera phone. Pls keep reminding – I’ll have to write it on my hand. Soccer season is done on Saturday and then I’ll have time to think again! And make a sign, hopefully!
Karen says
Yes ma’am. I’ll keep on ya until you send me a pic.
How did this season go? Did the kids have fun?
Kim says
OK, awesome! Yes, they really did – and I always just hope that they’ll enjoy it enough to play the next year. I know sports aren’t for every kid and not all of them will play in high school and beyond, but youth sports are so great for kids and teach them a lot about working together and being responsible (not to mention, building lifelong friends!). And it gets them out and about – away from TV and video games!! 🙂
Elle says
This is my FAVORITE MAC red, hands down. And I say it with my (sometimes) Chicago accent, so it’s DEW – BAHHH – net for me. 😉
Karen says
Ahh! I love it. DEW-BAHHH-net!
