Well, ladies, spring was allegedly on the menu until these storm clouds blew into town…
Come on, Mother Nature, what’s the deal? Where are my 80-degree days? I want hotness, so I can read my gossip mags while I sip iced tea by a swimming pool and daydream about MAC To The Beach. 🙂
MAC To The Beach Makeup Look Featuring a Bit of Blue for a Rainy Spring Day
Today I’m wearing my new “I’m living in complete denial about the weather” makeup look, which features gold, peach, coral, blue and bronze.
Even though it still makes use of some of the brighter colors from the MAC To The Beach collection (among other things like these and this), I think it’s a little daytime-friendlier than the orange and green liner look I tried last weekend.
If you decide to give this or something similar a try, please share any suggestions for duplicate or similar products you discover. Substitutions are ALWAYS welcome (a girl’s gotta have options!). 🙂
Grab your board, girl, and let’s ditch this rain! You know where we’re headed…
Products I used (from MAC To The Beach unless otherwise noted)
- Urban Decay Eden Primer Potion
- Expensive Pink Eyeshadow, a shimmery golden pink from the permanent collection (NOTE: If pink eyeshadows make you look like you’ve been crying, try substituting with a shimmery gold)
- Brownborder Technakohl Liner, a dark matte brown liner from the permanent collection
- Float On By Eye Kohl, a shimmery blue
- Pro Longlash Mascara in Pitchblack, a jet black mascara from the permanent collection
- Lustre Drops in Sun Rush, a shimmery golden peach highlighter
- Hipness Blush, a shimmery coral
- Weekend Cream Bronzer, a shimmery warm brown with pink and golden pearl
- Funbathing Cremesheen Lipstick, a shimmery bronzy plum
Top row: Urban Decay Eden Primer Potion, Expensive Pink Eyeshadow, Brownborder Technakohl Liner, Float On By Eye Kohl, Pro Longlash Mascara; Bottom row: Sun Rush Lustre Drops, Hipness Blush, Weekend Cream Bronzer, Funbathing Lipstick
Woodwinked Eyeshadow
Eyes
- Kick things off by applying a thin layer of the eyeshadow primer over your entire eyelid with a finger.
- Next, grab a flat eyeshadow brush like the MAC 239, and sweep the shimmery golden pink eyeshadow over the entire eye, concentrating most of the color on the lid.
- Line your upper lash line with the brown pencil line, mellowing it out by smudging the edges with a MAC 214. OPTIONAL: You can tightline the upper lash line to make your lashes look thicker (here’s more on the process of tightlining).
- Add a pop of blue by lining both your lower water and lash lines with the shimmery blue eyeliner; soften the color along the lower lash line by gently smudging it with a pencil brush. I like the MAC 219.
- Clean your pencil brush before using it to apply the shimmery gold eyeshadow to the inner corner of your eye (around the tear duct); it really brightens things up.
- Finish by curling your lashes and applying two layers of black mascara to both sets (the top and bottom).
Cheeks and Lips
- Almost to the finish line, boo! With your trusty blush brush in hand, apply the shimmery coral blush to the apples of your cheeks.
- Make ’em glow by blending in a shimmery peachy gold highlighter along the tops of the cheeks, down the bridge of your nose.
- With a synthetic flat top brush like the Sonia Kashuk Flat Top Blusher Brush, sweep the bronzer along the curve at the bottom of your cheeks and along your jawline.
- Finish the look by applying a layer of the shimmery bronze lipstick to your lips.
Tada! Now, smile with your eyes, and pose for the mirror!
Good job. 🙂
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

Your bright look makes me happy! How similar to Thrillin’ from the MAC beach collection is your lipstick? California weather is just so confusing. Last week it was all gorgeous sunny days!
Karen says
Hi Nancy,
I have yet to see Thrills in person, but I’ve read that it’s more of a golden copper. The shade I’m wearing here is more plummy.
Meghan says
i NEED to get that blue eyeliner..it is amazing! and your hair looks fabulous as usual!
Karen says
Hi Meghan,
Yes, you need this liner in your life. 🙂
How was your Monday? I hope it was good!
Nina says
That blue liner looks awesome with Expensive Pink. Ive always thought EP is one of the best eyeshadows MAC has ever made. 🙂
I love the look …. and I hope that the showers take the blues away with it after its done!
Its about to storm here too … about to settle in and watch the season finale of House! 🙂
Karen says
Hi Nina,
I heart Expensive Pink! What other colors do you like to wear it with?
Did it end up storming out your way? The rain seems to have gone away for now… now it’s just dark clouds, boo!
Nina says
It stormed some — after I was done w/ watching House and Gossip Girl (i know, i know … its a guilty pleasure bec their clothes and makeup is fun to watch)!
I like wearing EP w/ a gray eyeliner too (either Stila SmudgePot in Gray or UD 24×7 in Gunmetal). Its pretty with green as well as blue and even brown. Its really versatile and the texture is awesome!
EP will probably be the first eyeshadow ill hit pan on, and ill keep on buying it and buying it. So flattering, no?
Karen says
The EP/gray combo sounds pretty. Do you have Vex? That might be a fun one to throw up in the mix too.
Would you believe it took me YEARS to getting around to EP!?!
Nina says
I dont think I have Vex but I looked it up on the MAC website and its purdy!
I stayed away from the pinks for a long time thinking I couldnt pull them off bec im kinda pale with yellow undertones … but I saw it on a girl that was getting a make over in the MAC store and asked the SA for a swatch. I fell goshdarned in love! 🙂
Im a huge fan of gray liner – kinda like an inbetween shade and with the right liner, the intensity should be easy to adjust — today im in Nylon + Stila Smudge Pot in Grey. Didnt have time to mess w/ any other colors because I had to be early at work.
Oh guess what — haircut for me @ 1130. Finally! 😀
Julbra says
I’m loving the blue liner! I’ve been using my Urban Decay one (Flipside) because I am really into the turquoise trend right now, but I’ll have to try blending it out like you did because it looks awesome like that.
.-= Julbra’s last blog post… Got My Macage! aka Mac Mini Haul =-.
Karen says
Hi Julianne,
Flipside is so pretty! Definitely one of my UD faves.
Do you have a pencil brush like the 219? It’s very handy for blending and detail work around the tear duct area.
Amy says
I love the look of blue liner but I’m not too brave and that might be a little too “blue” for me. 🙁 Is there another MAC blue liner that is more subtle, for us less adventurous girls? I should probably look into navy blue, I guess.
Karen says
Hi Amy,
Maybe try a navy blue or blue layered/smudged with black.
MAC makes a few darker blue liners. A few to look into:
Auto-de-Blu Technakohl Liner
Blooz Eye Kohl
Prussian or Navy Stain Powerpoint Eye Pencil
Amy says
Thanks Karen! I’m heading to a Mac To The Beach event on the 28th and while it’s “complimentary,” I need to buy $50 in products. I have two producst in mind, and I will definitely look at those liners when I’m there! Thnx! 🙂
Jen says
Karen, your hair in the first pic: amazing!
I love the lipstick.
Karen says
Hi Jen,
LOL, I wish I could say I did that. I’m on day three of post haircut/highlights do. I’m gonna see how long I can make this last… thank goodness for dry shampoo.
Jen says
I’ve been wanting to try dry shampoo. My hair gets oily by the second day, and coupled with Hawaii’s humidity… Let’s just say that if I went three days without washing, my hair would be NASTY.
Which dry shampoos would you recommend?
Karen says
I love Rene Furterer’s dry shampoo. Tresemme also makes one that’s very affordable. I talk about it in this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D-rxw8V4pnE&feature=youtube_gdata
Amy says
Oh the Tresemme one smells so good! I think that one and Psssssssssssssst! (found at CVS) work really well.
Steph B says
Am loving that blue liner on you. I tend not to line my lower lid because it seems to make my eyes look smaller but I might need to rethink that for a pop of summery color.
Karen says
Hi Steph B,
I know what you mean. I stay away from lining the lower lash line when I’m feeling tired and don’t want to draw attention to the dark circles. Sometimes, though, it just plain fun. 🙂
Vonvon says
Nice combination of colors for the EOTD! Expensive Pink eyeshadow is a very pretty shade. Will definitely check that out.

Karen says
Hi Vonvon,
Thanks. 🙂 Expensive Pink rocks. What’s great about it is it also pairs well with lots of neutrals, too.
Vonvon says
Thanks for the tip on pairing with neutral colors. As much as I love colors for my eyes….my basic ‘signature’ style is still neutral/nude eye makeup….which, for me, is quite easy to pull of esp when I am in a hurry (which I always am) 😉

Karen says
I hear you. On days when I’m in a rush I’m all about MAC Soft Brown!
Katie says
Such a pretty look! I will try this as soon as I get that blue eyeliner!
Karen says
Hi Katie,
You’ll have to let me know what you think about it once you get it. 🙂
Hope you had a nice Monday!
Sara says
Can I have your hair just put directly on my head?;) lol….you look beautiful!
Karen says
LOL! 🙂 How was your day, Sara? I hope your Monday was fab!

makeup morsels says
wahh I want your hair! It looks so good and oh man I know. It’s the end of May and I wake up expecting some sun but no…drizzle all day. I do like this weather in the winter, but it’s not even remotely close to winter anymore! Love the look, it reminds me of seashells+the beach

Trust me, I wish it would look like this everyday. This is still post-hairstylist hair! Dry shampoo is the best invention, ever. 🙂

Mariah says
Gorgeous look!
But also, this article gets me all excited to move to SF! That weather you are having is like EVERY DAY here in Portland! And if that’s rare there, then I AM ECSTATIC!!
Karen says
I live a ways north from the city so it’s warmer here, but SF should be getting some nice days too.
You’ll really love it in the fall… September/October is when it gets really good.

Your hair looks fantastic and so does that blue liner! It’s the kind of Monday look that makes you feel like it’s Friday! 🙂
Karen says
Thanks, Kim. 🙂
How’s your day going so far? Good I hope!
Lydia says
I’m gonna copy that look for college tomorrow, nice and cheery for the exam hall!
is Hipness blush anything like nars’ orgasm? like, corally goldy kinda thing 🙂 x
Karen says
Hi Lydia,
It’s very different. NARS Orgasm has more gold and peach; Hipness is a brighter coral.
Have fun in the exam hall tomorrow!
amy says
Float on by is very gorgeous, but I have a feeling I have several similar one in my stash. I can’t wait to go to the MAC at the Beach event today at my PRO store. It should be fun, but it would be a rainy day at the beach!

That’s gorgeous – I can’t wait to get my Float on By eyeliner – I preordered this one along with the MSF highlighter and that’s it for me!
Shannon says
Oh my god, your hair is GORGEOUS in these pictures!! 🙂 I’m loving the bright look, too!
Sofia says
wow! I was looking your first FOTD and you look a lot younger now ;D
Sylvie says
Hi Karen
I’m guessing that you have both the cream bronzers from the MAC To the beach collection. Which do you prefer for your skintone? I’m close to yours- NC30, and I’ve been thinking of getting one of them. Not much for wearing bronzer though, cuz I feel I’m naturally tanned just right but I’m intrigued by the cream-to-powder finish of this product in particular.
SB_Sweetie says
I think I like this look better than the one from the other day! Very fresh & summery. I’m so excited to go to the launch party tonight at my local MAC. My list o’ stuff keeps shifting around…
Gaby says
Love your hair on the first pic!! u said ones that u have it curly?? cause I have it curly myself and just looks like a nest =( how u keep it like that?? luv your blog by the way I check it everyday =D
PJ says
Very pretty! I would never think to do pink lids with a blue lower lash line but it looks awesome on you! Thanks again for those swatches. I really really neeed Float on By, Sun Rush and Hipness. Oh and have you seen the To the Beach make up bags?? Think they are worth it?
BeautyMaven says
Oh goodness– this is positively gorgeous!!!!!! I had vowed to never ever ever in this life wear blue on my lids… EVER. But this look might make me at least play with the idea, haha!! I cannot WAIT for the To the Beach collection to come out— you better believe I will be at the MAC counter first thing on the 27th (If I remember?) !!!! Poor paycheck.. it never even had a change, hahaha…. Thanks for the review!

BeautyMaven says
Oh geez, you can tell I posted that last comment late at night, haha— *I never wanted to use blue because I have dark green eyes… always thought it would clash horribly, but I think I’ll play with it…. and my paycheck never stood a CHANCE, not a change 😉 Sorry about that!

Karen says
Have fun hauling! What do you think you might get?
BeautyMaven says
Oh geez– what will I NOT get?! Haha!!!! Definitely a lipstick and lipglass.. Rosemary and Thyme eyeliner.. Hipness blush.. Lustre drops..maybe a bronzer… that’s it, hahaha!! I just adore the packaging!

sheila says
hi karen!
first of all, i just HEART your blog. 🙂
i’ve worn makeup for years but after i had my trial makeup session with my makeup artist for my wedding (in april), i’ve been obsessed with trying new things.
i went out today to get my absolute-haves from this collection and got five things! (Hipness Blush, Shimmermoss Eyeshadow, Funbathing Lipstick, Easy Lounger Lipgloss, and Float on By Kohl pencil). i have to say, i LOVE LOVE LOVE them all! i brought them home and tried them on right away.
the blue pencil is AMAZING! i like pairing it with the eyeshadow. i think it would look good on anyone. ditto for the blush.
anyway, just thought i’d chime in. i love the looks you’ve put together.
from one brown girl (i’m filipina) to another, keep doing what you’re doing. 🙂
