I’m having a blast exploring different ways to wear MAC’s new Style Black collection.
Earlier today I tried a bronzy black smokey eye using Mineralize Eyeshadow in Gilt By Association ($20).
It turned out better than I thought it would! At first I was afraid (I was petrified) the slippery Cream Colour Base would look too messy, but I found that as long as I didn’t overuse it, it stayed put reasonably well.
This is a look I’ll definitely wear again, maybe with a white, brown or bronze top and some gold jewelry.
Tutorial: What you’ll need
- An eyeshadow primer like Too Faced Shadow Insurance ($17)
- A creamy black eyeshadow base like MAC Cream Colour Base in Black ($17)
- A shimmery blackish bronze shadow like MAC Mineralize Eyeshadow in Gilt By Association ($20)
- A shimmery, peachy golden eyeshadow like MAC Eyeshadow in Woodwinked ($15)
- A shimmery, bronze pencil liner like MAC Eye Kohl in Powersurge ($15)
- A black liquid pen liner like LORAC Front of the Line Pro ($22)
- A black mascara like MAC Zoom Fast Black Lash Mascara ($13)
- A black gel liner like MAC Fluidline in Blacktrack ($15)
Swatches from left to right: Too Faced Shadow Insurance, MAC Cream Colour Base in Black, MAC Mineralize Eyeshadow in Gilt By Association, MAC Eyeshadow in Woodwinked
MAC Eye Kohl in Powersurge, LORAC Front of the Line Pro, MAC Zoom Fast Black Lash Mascara, MAC Fluidline in Blacktrack
The eyes
- Start by priming your entire eyelid with a thin layer of eyeshadow primer.
- Next, with a synthetic eyeshadow brush (I’m using a MAC 239 Eye Shader Brush), apply the creamy black eyeshadow base to the first lid. Try to concentrate more of the color on the outer lid (the side closest to your ear).
- While the creamy black base is still wet, use the same brush to add several layers of the shimmery blackish bronze eyeshadow directly on top (a wet base sticks to the shadow better and prevents the shadow from falling on your cheeks). Smooth out any harsh edges with either the brush or a finger.
- Sweep the shimmery peachy golden eyeshadow into your crease with a MAC 217 Blending Brush, and use the same brush to soften any harsh lines.
- You can emphasize the lower lash line by lining the lower water line with your bronzy pencil liner.
- Make the eye pop even MORE by smudging the shimmery, peachy gold eyeshadow along the lower lash line with a MAC 214 Short Shader Brush.
- Almost there! With a Laura Mercier Flat Eye Liner Brush, apply the black gel liner to the upper water line.
- Then, line the upper lash line with your black liquid pen liner.
Finish by curling your upper lashes and adding two coats of black mascara to both your tops and bottoms.
Finito, babe!
Why the heck are you still reading this? It’s the weekend! Get out there and have some fun. 🙂

Hi Nina,
Hee! I often say a little prayer for self control when I roll up to the MAC counter, I can’t lie!
What do you think you’re going to get?
Tabs says hi to Linus and Anja. 🙂
Marce says

Loving your posts on style black. 😀
I guess black doesn’t only mean black, this look is gorgeous!

Karen says
Hi Maggie,
Yah, there’s a lot of flexibility to these products, especially the eye stuff.
How’s school going for you? Are you enjoying your classes this year?
Rae says
Gorgeous!! It looks like there’s a green sheen in the first photos, though — is that just the camera and stuff, or does Woodwinked look like that in real life, too?
Meh. Either way, it looks great on you =P
.-= Rae’s last blog post… Shiny, smooth kisser. =-.
Karen says
Hi Rae,
I’m guessing the green is from the Black CCB… my skin tends to bring out blues/purples/greens in black products. Woodwinked is more of a peachy gold — no green whatsoeva. It’s really one of those MAC unsung heroes. If you wear warm shades well you might like it. 🙂
Doreen says
This is a great look, Karen! I was orginally planning to skip Gilt by Association and by Young Punk instead, but now I think I may have to double check… Powersurge looks super gorgeous, too…. By the way, what are you using on your lips? You look fantastic!
Karen says
Hi Doreen,
Thanks hon. 🙂
As for the lips, I’m wearing the NARS Lip Gloss/Lip Stain duo in Stolen Kisses/Pampa. Here are a few close up shots and swatches!
Stef says
Ha! These are exactly the eye products I bought today! I had a few other combos in my hand, but these were the ones I left with. I’m even more sure of my choice now after seeing how pretty it looks on you. But, my god-all 4 e/s are just so gorgeous! I really liked the Bat Black cream too.
Did you get both the Volanic Ash products? I couldn’t resist them either, or the Night Violet Mattene. Oh, it was ugly. No self control.
Hey, I have a question-why a synthetic brush for the cream?

Karen says
Hi Stef,
Awesome haul, my fellow Miley Cyrus fan. 🙂
Regarding the brush — synthetic brushes don’t absorb wet/cream product, whereas natural hair brush fibers suck wet stuff right up. Using a synthetic brush allows more of the product to get on your face!
Solé says
I’m finding that there are quite a few items from this line that I really want! Damn MAC addiction, why can’t I quit you?!
All joking aside, this look rocks!!! You can really pull off those darker looks without looking harsh or overdone. I have to be careful, because I tend to look all emo and angsty when I use these shades so I have to use a very light hand and blend for dear life. But I still want them. Oh, and props on the perfectly (and I do mean perfectly) applied eyeliner. 🙂
Karen says
Hi Sole,
Yeah, I was surprised to be really moved by this line. At first I was afraid it would be too artsy, but it’s actually very wearable.
Call me crazy, but I can see you rocking the emo really well. 😉
BTW, have you started classes yet?
Kristin says
Hubba hubba! Love this look on you, Karen! Quick and easy but smokin’ hawt, I gotta give this one a try.
Sleepy says
LOVE this look! You make wearing multiple e/s looks so easy (It always puzzles my mind…)
Shiny says
I wasn’t wanting anything for the line before but that looks so pretty! And it didn’t smudge?

Looks great! Thanks for the tutorial! I’m always looking for new ideas, even if I’m not always brave enough to try them. I think I get the shakes when working with anything black!

Karen, I really liked this look! Love the black shimmery shadows.
Also, I think it’s so nice of you to take the time to respond to everyone’s comment individually. It really shows that you care about your subscribers and want to create a personal relationship with them. It really sets you apart from other bloggers.
Hope you’re having a nice weekend!

Every time I go to MAC I always end of looking at, picking up and swatching Woodwink and I love the colour, but for some weird reason I haven’t purchased it yet. That is going on my shopping list.
