Do you ever find yourself obsessed with makeup and style from a certain era? A few years ago I went through a 1940s phase, and I wore this Dita Von Teese inspired look every day for months!
Because MAC Russian Red Lipglass is so va-va-voom, I went with simple, neutral eyes using MAC Ricepaper Eyeshadow, MAC Soba Eyeshadow and fatty black eyeliner, courtesy o’ MAC Fluidline in Blacktrack. I also like this same basic look with cheeks and lips in either plum or pink. Or, if you can pull it off, pale pink cheeks and beige lips look great, too (tres Angelina Jolie).
To get this look I used…
Over the entire eye (lid, crease and brow bone)
– Dior Long-Wearing Moisturizing Concealer in 430 to prime the lids
– MAC Beige-ing Shadestick
– MAC Ricepaper Eyeshadow
Crease
– MAC Soba Eyeshadow
Brows
– MAC Concrete Eyeshdaow
Lashes
– MAC Zoom Lash mascara in Zoomblack (upper and lower)
Upper lash line & water line
– MAC Fluidline in Blacktrack
Undereye circles
– Dior Long-Wearing Moisturizing Concealer in 430
– Laura Mercier Secret Brightening Powder #2
Face
– Laura Mercier Oil-Free Foundation in Suntan Beige
– Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Powder
Cheeks
– MAC Frankly Scarlet blush
Lips
– MAC Red Enriched Cremestick Liner
– MAC Russian Red Lipglass
The look is elegant and classic; when I don’t feel like wearing color on my eyes, it’s my default makeup for fancy parties and dinners.
Without high maintenance MAC Russian Red Lipglass in the mix, the overall look takes about 10 minutes. With Russian Red and Frankly Scarlet blush (another bold product requiring patience and care to apply), then you’re looking at about 20.
What do you think? Do you ever rock 40s-inspired makeup?
Happy Saturday, ya’ll! I’m so glad it’s the weekend. This morning I slept in, then read a few Buffy the Vampire Slayer comics while drinking tons of coffee. Oh, it was glorious!
In every generation, there is a Chosen One.
Right now, I’m heading out for a quick run. I just downloaded a few new songs onto my iPod, and I can’t wait to listen to them and run up some hills. Anyone else get excited about working out to new music? I know I can’t be the only one, LOL. First up: Go Girl, by Pitbulll, which has been stuck in my head for days.
Can you spot the glossy red lipgloss?
Hope you’re having a fantastic Saturday. Whatcha been up to?
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

Girl you look gorgeous! I only have one shade of red lippie (Too Faced Lip of Luxury in Drop Dead red) and I’ still afraid to use it lol.
Jeanne says
Oooh, red lips and pearls! Lookit you! I love that classic 40s look.
Tonight I’m heading up to SF to see a show with my mom, so I’m wearing a light gold eye and haven’t decided on a lip yet — I’m thinking Strawbaby from Fafi, since I love that color!
And I’ve heard nothing but good things about Buffy: Season Eight from my Buffy-and-comics-loving friends, but I haven’t checked it out yet! I’ll probably wait until the second trade paperback comes out in June (Faith!!) and get both at once…

A classy and classic look! I rarely rock the bold lips, just because I have so much fun doing bold eyes! A couple of times, though, when I went in for a facial or a makeover and couldn’t stand leaving the house bare-faced, I just did mascara and siren-red lips. I like the swept-back hair too!
My friend hooks me up with the Buffy comics! Love ’em!
I ended up going out to Long’s and doing a drugstore splurge! Scored a couple o’ nail polishes (Rimmel and Sally Hansen) and I’m trying a Neutrogena glycolic acid peel! That and toothpaste, of course! 😉
jeannie says
love the look!! red lips look great on you!
Karen says
Hi Fashion’s Darling,
You should break that bad boy out and just wear it round the house. I don’t usually wear crazy eye colors in public but am known to rock the brights while sitting around watching Sex and the City!
Karen says
Hi Jeanne,
How fun! What show are you going to watch? I love love love Strawbaby too… it’s gonna look cute with your gold eye!
You won’t be disappointed by season eight (although I don’t recall Xander looking as hot on the TV show, hmmm).
Karen says
Hi Iheartmakeup,
LOL, so I feel pretty fierce in this, even when I’m just making eggs in the kitchen, LOL (which I did after I took these pics, ha ha ha!).
I hope you are having a good weekend so far! Doing anything fun?
Karen says
Hi Glosslizard,
Gotta have the toothpaste (you know me and dental hygiene). What Sally colors did you get? I have a few here that I haven’t busted out in while, so maybe since I’m staying in tonight I’ll do a movie/manicure night at the casa de MBB.
That’s so awesome you get free Buffy comics! My jealousy runs DEEEEEP!
Karen says
Thank you Jeannie! Are you a red lipstick/lipgloss kinda girl?
PeeChee says
Okay girl….you got dolled up like that and went running?? ha ha. You thought you would of had a glamorous afternoon/evening or something. Then again, I get all made up to clean the house. 🙂 I went out to the mall today and saw your blog before I left…ended up getting the russian red lipglass….along with other goodies from mac.
Girl, if you sans the bold lips and had an off-the-shoulder wrap…that could totally be my senior school photo. ha ha
Dao says
Wow, Karen you look so aristocratic and luxurious. I can imagine you wearing Russian Red and drinking tea while chatting with the girls in a French accent. Tres chic, Oui? What did you do with your hair? It’s very va-va-va-voom.
Today it rained like cats and dogs! All I did was running some errands. I’m trying to simplify my skincare routine and picked up some Olay products that are on sale in Target. Every time I’m there, I always feel amazed by that store. The code for going to Target is “being on a field trip” because I never know what I’m getting from that store.
Dao says
Comment one more time, OMG I’m on crack or something! I love Dita von Teese. I read somewhere that she does her own hair, makeup, and dress herself up for events. She’s probably the only celeb out there who doesn’t have half a dozen people circulating around her all the time. That’s why I love her so much!
I’m baking your blueberry peach cobbler tomorrow. Since I don’t have such a sweet tooth, I’m going to reduce the amount of sugar down very much. Hope it’s gonna come out ok. Btw, I don’t bake that often.
Karen says
LOL, PeeChee,
Okay, a few hours passed between the time I took pictures and wrote the post and running. I went to lunch, ran a few errands and then put the post up! Putting on makeup and just chillin’ around the house is also standard operation procedure round here too, ha!
WOOT! So glad you picked up a tube or Russian Red (aka HOTNESS). What liner are you going to use it with? And what didja pick up on your MAC run?
I just realized that it kinda looks like mine too. Except, um, I think my hair was a bit taller. Want to know what freaks me out? Class of 1993 was 15 years ago! OMG!
Karen says
Hi Dao,
Oui, oui, merci girlfriend! *raises teacup* The hair was pretty easy. I parted it on the side, teased it a bit at the roots, secured the bangs back with bobby pins, then sprayed a lil’ hairspray to keep it in check. Super fast and easy!
You just said the magic words: “TARGET ON SALE”! Seriously, that place is magical. I go in there and feel very hunter-gatherer! What did you get on sale?
Karen says
Dao, oh yummy! I could do with some cobbler right now. El hub is working late tonight so I was left to fend for myself and had cereal for dinner (too lazy to cook). Good luck with the baking! It’s a very easy recipe, so I’m sure even though you don’t do it often it will still rock. Don’t forget the vanilla ice cream.
Oh yah, Dita does do her own makeup and styling. I was really nervous during that interview and wish I could’ve had more time with her! She seemed very down to earth in person and unguarded.
Glosslizard says
I got one of the new seasonal colors called “Arabian Night”, it’s a really pretty dark royal navy with gold sparkle! The Rimmel is a violet purple with pinky shimmer.
I don’t have many hook-ups, but I got Buffy! 😉
Karen says
OoooOOOoooh sounds pretty. I love dark colors in theory but they are so high maintenance in practice (for me at least, LOLOL).
Girl, that’s HOT! Does this mean I’m now just mere degrees away from Joss Whedon?
lindsay says
that red lipglass looks GREAT on you, and i love how you made your eye makeup so subtle to draw attention to the lips!
i got precise volume, btw and it’s GREAT! i love it so much, it adds so much length. the brush will take some getting used to though cause it feels like i’m not getting enough product on, and i do wish it’d add more volume..but this is definately the best mascara i’ve tried so far!

I’m planning to do a 40s look for a party next month. We’re supposed to dress up so that’ll be fun. The whole Marilyn thing will be awesome 🙂

Karen says
Hi Lindsay,
Thanks girl! 🙂 I like it cause it’s simple and easy. Some days I can’t handle five shadows and involved blending, ya know?
What color of Precise Volume did you get? I’m glad you like it. I agree, the brush does get some getting used to, but one really fab thing about it is that it works GREAT when one is a hurry!
Karen says
Hi Karen B.,
How fun! Do you have your outfit planned out already? Don’t forget the fishnets, corsage and button up sweater!
Karen says
Thanks Lynne,
Can’t go wrong with pearls! Hope you’re having a good Sunday!
Karen says
Hi Eru!
Thanks my dear! I still want to see you in Russian Red Lipglass someday! 🙂
Karen says
Hi Susanne,
T-minus one (?) day till your Heatherette comes! Are you ready?!?
Glosslizard says
Dark colors are way high maintenance! I’m convinced that the only reason they’ve been so on trend for so long is because they force you to a professional manicurist! I’m giving it my best shot though!
Hah! I wish! I loves me some Joss! I’m afraid my hook-up is more in the nature of being good friends with someone who owns a comic book store! 🙂
Susanne says
Hi Karen,
oh, you haven’t forgotten I will get my Heatherette soon!! 🙂 Yes, I am ready! And excited. It is great to meet people like you I can share my MAC interest with.

I haven’t really planned my outfit yet, but there’s a great little vintage shop close to my dig here in Ghent, so I’ll check that out.

oh, Karen! When I first saw the picture, even before i started reading I thought-“40’s glamour!” You pull this off SO WELL-love the black dress and pearls….red lips with black n pearls is such a classic look. I just wish I had more weekend evening events to dress up for, LOL.
I did a hill yesterday as well-but I’m not up to running yet, just power walking. 🙂 It wasn’t just a “street hill”-it was a little mountain trail.
Shiny says
Wow, so could not pull this off but it looks hot on you!

Hi Glosslizard,
Dark colors look fab on the toes. So cute during the sandal season!
Do you know how many boys in my life would die for a comic store hookup? My brother, my best homeboy from high school and El Hub are all total comics nerds! Surprisingly, I’ve never been dragged to Comicon or a Star Trek Convention…
Glosslizard says
The polish wasn’t the easiest to apply and it took 3 coats to get the depth of color I wanted, but after the 3rd coat and the Seche Vite, my nails look fab! I think I’ll head back to Longs today and pick up the Sultry Fuchsia! 🙂
I haven’t really been to a comicon either (went to one with my brother once, a long time ago). I usually just let my comic friends fill me in on what goes on! Some of my fave authors (George R. R. Martin! Holla!) do the cons once in a while, but usually the San Diego one!
Tonya says
Love the look Karen! Beautiful as always.
Go Girl….is so hard to get out of your head. I got the pitbull album recently and it’s my fav song.
Hope you’re having a Happy Monday!
Tonya
Karen says
Hi Glosslizard,
I don’t mind three coats as long as it gets me to where I wanna be. And you go with your manicure motivation! I remember you telling me that your nails take a beating so your effort is admirable. Right now I have my left hand painted but not my right … LONG STORY! It looks pretty crazy.
I’ve never read anything by George R.R. Martin. What’s your favorite book?!?
Karen says
Thanks Tonya!
I *love* that song! I couldn’t stop dancing to it this weekend (it’s good for booty shakin’, LOL).
My Monday has been challenging so far. I was not ready for the week to start!
How was your weekend? Do anything fun?
BeautyTalk says
How do you always read my mind? I’ve been looking at Russian Red FOREVER and contemplating whether I should pick it up and now you’ve convinced me 🙂

Glosslizard says
G.R.R.M. has a major epic fantasy series (which is still ongoing) called “A Song of Ice and Fire”. The first book is “A Game of Thrones” and the books are amazing!! Real hard-core, meaty, Tolkienesque, sword and sorcery (although mostly sword) fantasy! Be warned, if you start and you like, there are currently five massive books and long, excruciating waits for him to produce the next! Yes, he originally intended it to be a trilogy! 🙂
He’s also done some sci-fi (I love “Tuf Voyaging”) and he wrote for the tv series “Beauty and the Beast” among others.
I met him when he last visited SF, and he is a super-nice, approachable guy to boot!
Karen says
Hi Beautytalk,
LOL! Girrrrl, I hope you picked up your tube. It’s super gorgeous and so hot. If the gloss is too high maintenance there’s always the lipstick!
Karen says
Hi Glosslizard,
I have a theory that you and my good friend C-Money would get along. She likes the same types of books, too! I will have to get her these for a present (I’m hoping that she hasn’t read them already!). Oh, and don’t you hate it when you have to wait so long for the sequel? OY!
I remember the Beauty and the Beast series – Linda Hamilton (SARAH CONNER!) was in it, yah?
That’s cool that he was so nice in person! I recently saw one of my favorite authors in the bathroom at the movie theater (she shall remain nameless) and a fan went up to her … and she was kinda rude to the fan! It makes me think of her a little bit differently now whenever I see her book on my shelf.
Susanne says
Hi Karen!
My Heatherette products arrived yesterday 🙂 I love them!

You look fantastic. Love the pearls! 😉
