I can’t even begin to describe to you the chaos swirling around me right now. Almost every single one of the houses in my neighborhood is under some kind of construction — I am so not exaggerating — and behind the cacophony of hammering and sawing is poor Tabs pacing the house while adding his own mewling and grumbling (“Mrrroooow!”) to the symphony of sound.
I am *this close* to completely loosing my sh*t…
Safe place! Safe place!
The only thing preserving my sanity has been this song: Sail, by Awolnation, which I’ve been trying to play loud enough to drown out the noise outside.
That whole entire album (Megalithic Symphony) is my power jam right now. I listen to it and pretend that all of the banging going on outside is part of the song, haha.
SAIL!
The ruckus started right after dawn and hasn’t let up. By 11 I felt like I needed the makeup equivalent of a large vanilla shake and a basket of fries, also known as comfort food, so I fell back on a look I do all the time with some of my favorite things from MAC’s permanent line.
More classy than flashy (hopefully), it’s a softly smoky golden brown eye with black cat liner, pink, barely-there matte cheeks and glossy pinkish gold lips. I used to wear this look a lot when I worked in the city and still do whenever I want to look pulled together but not over the top.
It’s kind of a staple of mine in fall and winter when my tan has faded away. This time of year, I reach for MAC’s neutral and golden browns, like Cork (which I’m wearing in my crease) and Soba, a lot, and warmer orangey browns like Soft Brown, Saddle and Brownscript a little less.
I dunno… I feel like the orangey browns look better on me when I’m getting more sun and my skin tone has more reddish undertones.
Ohmigosh! Do you hear that…?
Silence. Wait! — there’s one lonely jackhammer in the distance. Other than that, though, I don’t hear anything, hooray!
I need to savor it while it lasts… 🙂
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

Hi Karen, sorry to hear about the disturbances! I hope that they’ll be finished soon, or at least before you lose it, haha.
This post is so helpful because I have been slowly developing my MAC eyeshadow palette. I’m not a fan of warm browns so it’s nice to see a look with neutral browns.
Karen says
Hi Sylvia,
I’m glad you found it helpful! Do you have Cork and Soba yet? Both are great. Mulch is a must-have too. 🙂
Agata says
Gosh, you’re so pretty Karen. This look is gorgeous on you and your hair looks fantastic. I will have to try a similar look.
Oh and I hope you will regain your peace soon 🙂 hugs!
Karen says
Hi Agata,
Thanks my friend. When you do this look snap a pic and let me see! Maybe add some false lashes, too? (Hint, hint!) That would take it to the next level. I really wanted to but I couldn’t concentrate long enough to get them on.
What are you up to this week? THANK GOODNESS tomorrow is Friday, hooray!
Agata says
I most likely won’t do such a wonderful job as you did with this look.
Not much going on over here, still waiting to hear about my new position. I got an email from the recruiter saying they are yet to make their decision and they are waiting on some info from product development team.
And you know I hate Fridays cause weekends are insanely stressful at my job 🙁

I love how you did your eye makeup.
Erin says
Looks really, really nice. I can see why you like these products so much, you look so clean and pretty.
Amy says
I sympathize, Karen. My upstairs neighbor is stompy at certain hours and it makes me rage. *Just because you go to bed at midnight doesn’t mean everyone else does, lady! ugh*
Hope the construction stops soon. Maybe it’s a good excuse to get out and find some peace out in nature!
PS- Your brows are on point! And i love the necklace.
Red Weather Tiger says
This is about the most beautiful look I’ve ever seen on you! Just gorgeous. The stress from the construction is NOT showing; you look mahvelous.

Mulch Is such a beauty! Looks great 🙂
And you just wrote what was going on in my head. There is triple chaos around me :
1. All the time since a week: The church construction work going on right in front of house
2. Midnight, Morning 6am, and few other times during the day: The heater switches on or something , i dont know what it exactly is, but it sounds like a 100 hammers hitting right on my head. Goes on for 3 min which is enough to get me wide awake at 6am!
3. All the time forever: My house is right on the main street which means traffic noise is always there 24/7. Buses : ’71C to wilkinsburg, Welcome aboard’ , i hear this 50 times a day.
Aaaaargh! Its just gets on to me sometimes 😀 😀 Uff, my longest comment ever. I can make this a blog post! Sigh!

You look beautiful here Karen! I love this look!! Enjoy the silence while it lasts 🙂

This is such a lovely look and so wearable. I love that subtle winged eyeliner and really need to practice it!
Gowthami says
You look glowing 🙂

I really like this! This is the perfect polished look I could see myself wearing everyday for work. I would hate to go out and buy more shadows…do you think some of them are similar to the ones in the Naked palette?
Danielle says
Wow your eye makeup here looks amazing!!
Kelly says
You look so stunning here Karen! And I love that necklace you have on! I’m not dealing with construction at home but neighbors that like cranking their music up to the point where everyone in our whole building can hear it. I hope it gets better soon for the both of us 😉

I love the makeup, gorgeous! Though I always find it funny how colours looks so different on different skin tones. I am super pale and rice paper on me looks obviously yellow and very frosty, but on you it’s a fabulous colour for a wash. Nonetheless, I think I might want to try this look 🙂

I love when you do these classic looks from the permanent line! Of course, I love every post you do, but this is a nice one that shows a great look with tools we all know and love 🙂 I really need to grab Perversion by UD. And the construction sounds super irritation, ughhh.
Rachel P says
And when I say “super irritation”, I obviously mean “irritating”, lol.
Kim says
That is just painful. I’d be blaring the music, too. Hopefully they finish at a decent hour if they’re beginning at the crack of dawn. I’d be very cranky. 🙁
On the positive side, this is a lovely look for you! 🙂
Elle says
This is why I fell in love with MAC – their easy to work with brown shades, since I can be super lazy most days and just need stuff that works. I love all these shadows – still have to get Cork – and I’m bummed they discontinued one of my favorite browns, Romp. Sniff sniff 🙁 You look fantastic!
Linda says
Love the looks! No one does a cat eye better.
And OMG, can I relate to the construction cacophony! I too work from home (in a vintage 1960s neighborhood with lots of big trees), and for 2 days a crew has been out here cutting some down. I know it’s necessary sometimes, but between chainsaws and woodchippers, the cats and I are a collective wreck. Can’t stop thinking about that foot in “Fargo.”
Liz says
Yup. MAC rocks. Looks good
