Take heed, shopaholics! If you plan to dive headlong into the Black Friday fray next week (November 29), steer clear of anyone roaming retail halls with a ravenous twinkle in their eye…
Case in point:
I know this because it’s a lesson I learned the hard way (of course). Years ago, on a dark and stormy November night…
OK, not really, it was daytime, and the weather was fine. 🙂 But it was during a particularly vicious Bebe sample sale in South San Francisco. A woman with this exact same look on her face walked up to me and pulled a skirt I was holding from my hands.
Shocked, I stood there with my mouth agape for about five silent seconds before my cavewoman instincts kicked in. I was about to run her down and stab her with one of my knitting needles (I’d been standing in front of the store for hours to get into the sale, during which time I finished knitting not one, but two, scarves). Thank goodness I came to my senses and refrained.
So yeah. Watch out for those hard-core shoppers, man! They don’t mess around…
Hopefully, online shopping won’t be that traumatic this year. If you plan to do any cyber-shopping on November 29, swing by the MAC website, because that’s when and where the new MAC Hautecore Friday Lipstick goes live.
The brand-spankin’ new matte black lipstick will be available exclusively online that one day only.
MAC calls it their first true black matte ever — something to consider if you like looks that are outside the box.
I think black lips can look really, really cool, especially if you dress the part with hair and clothes that echo a moody vibe.
That’s what I tried to do today… I’d hoped Hautecore Friday would be an opaque jet black that I could scare my neighbors with, haha!
And ya know, it is pretty dark, but I wouldn’t call it true black. On me, I see a deep, blackened purple.
I also expected it to be a flat matte, but I see a hint of shine.
It’s still neat, though. I definitely like how smooth it is, and it’s not as patchy as other black lipsticks I’ve tried.
When I wear it to walk Tabs/freak out the neighborhood children later today, I’ll probably line my lips with black eyeliner first to tone down the purple…
So what could one wear with black lipstick? Lots of things, but I turned to Lorde’s Tennis Court video again. In the vid, she wears a striking matte black lip, but the rest of her makeup is stripped down and minimal. Here’s another version I recently tried.
If I wanted to make Hautecore Friday a dramatic focal point of my look, I’d keep the colors on my face very neutral, do some light contouring, and finish with a single bold element on my eyes, like big lashes, thick brows or cat eye liner (but not all three, because that might be too much).
I would probably also dress up my skin by doing something formal, like a full-coverage foundation and matte powder, because on me, I feel like dramatic lips like this can look unfinished, or a little off, if my skin looks too casual.
Hautecore Friday goes on sale Friday, November 29, for one day only, on maccosmetics.com. Knitting needles not required.
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen

If you had been wearing Hautecore the Bebe b*tch never would’ve messed with you. Lipstick really does solve all problems.
I love that you knit! I crochet 🙂 There’s something about makeup junkies and yarn….

I’m not sure how I would react to a shopper like that lol. That’s just crazy! However, Hautecore looks beautiful on you! I can’t wait to get my hands on this lippie so I can see how I like it. It’s looked really good on everyone I’ve seen so far

Karen & Tabs – I would really like to know the profession or job of someone that can wear black lipstick to work. MAC Cyber is about as dark as I would dare to go!

Oh wow. I think that’s precisely why I stay away from crowded department stores during mega sales. Having been wounded by the plague of Jerky Holiday Customers during my stint at a bookstore, I definitely learned to just get outta the way. I’m very even-keeled overall, but guuuuurl, don’t get in my way with shopping…especially if it’s something I’ve been looking for!
I still have the Black Knight (errrr is that what it was called?) Cremesheen from a while back. I do like how this looks on you though!

Are you kidding me? I can’t believe how cool (and cute) this looks on you. You can really pull off dark lips <3

Karen, I don’t know how you do it, but black lipsticks always seem to pull the perfect shade of violet on your lips. Maybe it’s that they’re not totally opaque, or your complexion is pulling off some sort of witchcraft, but either way: it looks super badass.
I love! 😉

It’s because of incidents like those why I always do my Black Friday shopping online! I just started wearing darker shades like mac diva but your review makes me want to try black lipstick now.

This looks amazing on you Karen! Neither black nor matte, but perfect!!

I’m pretty open minded when it comes to lipstick shades but I don’t know if I could ever do a black lip. I’d love to pair this with other shades to vamp them up though!
