Taken with a flash
Did anybody else wear green makeup to stay pinch-free today?
Also with a flash
When I wear green eyeshadow, I usually try to work it into some sort of smokey variation, but for St. Patrick’s Day today I thought I’d try something with a little shimmer.
I started with MAC Pigment in Golden Olive, a shimmery greenish gold, and then added brown and gold eyeshadows
This one’s without a flash
No flash for this one either
How to get the eyes
I started by patting MAC Paint Pot in Painterly (a creamy beige) over my entire eyelid with a MAC 249 Large Shader Brush.
Painterly, a cream eyeshadow, acts as primer. Its job is to intensify the color of the other eyeshadows and pigments and to anchor them in place.
To get the smokey effect that looks like a gradient of colors, I layer cream shadows, liners and powder eyeshadows, beginning the layering process by lining my entire lid with MAC Eye Kohl in Powersurge (a shimmery gold).
Because I plan to smudge pigment on top of the Powersurge, it’s okay if it looks a little messy at this stage.
Next, I define my crease by sweeping MAC Eyeshadow in Brown Script (a matte orangey brown) into the crease with a MAC 217 Blending Brush.
Then, I grab MAC Pigment in Golden Olive (shimmery golden green) and pat the color onto my lid, drawing it up into the crease. For this step I’m using a Number Eight Billy B. Brush eyeshadow brush to apply Golden Olive, but a MAC 239 Eye Shader Brush would work great, too.
Okay, so, see how I have Brown Script in the crease and Golden Olive on the lid? I want both of these colors to blend into each other. That’s the goal.
To create a smooth transition of color, I sweep MAC Pigment in Gold Mode (a shimmery peachy gold) into the crease with my 217.
Gold Mode acts kinda like a bridge between Brown Script and Golden Olive. Now I have a color gradient! 🙂
With smokey eye looks, I really like to work the outer corner of the eye to add depth to the look. I do that by applying a darker color onto the outer third of my lid. Here, I blend two MAC eyeshadows, Humid (shimmery dark green) and Folie (matte dark reddish brown), and pat them both onto the outer third of my lid with a MAC 239 brush.
The dark colors contrast with Golden Olive, yah?
I don’t want too stark of a contrast, though, so I grab my trusty MAC 224 Tapered Blending Brush to blend out the edges.
Ahhh, smooooove…
Now it’s time to line the eyes. I load my Laura Mercier Flat Eye Liner Brush with MAC Fluidline in Blacktrack and then line my upper lash line.
Directly on top of the line I just drew, I pat MAC Eyeshadow in Humid on with a Sonia Kashuk Angled Eyeshadow Brush.
After I run the edge of a makeup sponge along the edge of the liner, here’s what I have…
Next, I line both the lower lash line and waterline with Powersurge.
Grabbing the same Sonia Kashuk Angled Brush, I pat MAC Humid on the outer two thirds of the lower lash line.
Because it’s St. Patrick’s Day, I want a festive sparkle, so I lightly dust MAC Glitter in Reflects Antique Gold over the entire eye with a MAC 275 Medium Angled Shading Brush.
I complete the eye look by filling in my brows, curling my lashes and then adding mascara.
After covering up my dark circles with concealer, I’m ready to move onto my cheeks and lips.
Cheeks and lips
Because there are quite a few steps to getting the eyes, I keep the lips and cheeks super simple.
For the cheeks, I sweep Benefit Coralista (a shimmery pinkish coral) on my apples with a MAC 129 Powder/Blush Brush. Then, for the lips, I apply one layer of Chanel Aqualumiere Gloss in Tangerine Dream (shimmery orange).
Now who’s ready for a round of green beer? 🙂
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,
Karen
P.S. Send me your St. Patrick’s Day look. Did you go for dazzle and shimmer, or are you keeping it cool and casual?

Hi Paris B.,
Golden Olive is one of my favorite Pigment shades. I think for the liner you could use any shimmery bronze or gold you have on hand.
Hope your week is going well so far!

Hi! 🙂
I wore green and gold too in a slightly different fashion but still similar.
I used bare study as a hilight base, then mossscape paint pot all over my lid. Femme-Fi over the bare study, and swimming over the moss scape. I used juxt to soften the crease and then carbon on the outer corner, and as a liner for the upper lid (using my lovely forever MAC 212). I kept the carbon going on the lower lash line for just a touch, then swimming again, and then this gold color i have from the body shop. “02 Eye shimmer” it actually looks really gold. And added that to the inner corner too. Finished with smolder on the waterline. It turned out fairly pretty, though between that and the green shirt I was wearing my eyes looked very green. And they are more blue/grey (though a touch of green..) today. I was covered in my ‘green’ quotient, as I had on green socks too! 🙂

Very beautiful!
I wore a pink and green eye inspired by the Garden Party look by Chanel a few seasons back. I don’t have the Garden Party quad though, so I had to mix and match a whole lotta shadows to get just the green I wanted! It turned out nicely though, and I topped it off by tipping my black-mascara’d lashes with Chanel’s Emeraude green mascara! Pretty!

I used the garden party quad yesterday 🙂

Beautiful, Karen! I’m going to try this, but I’m sure on me it will look like a drag queen hot mess LOL
How do you keep your powder shadows (like the step after Fluidline) from going all over your cheeks? That’s my biggest beef with eyeshadow and the only way I have found to work around it is to apply them damp. But then again, I’m useless ha ha
Thanks,
Ana.

Hi Karen! I just wanted to say… you inspire me! You really do. I’ve always loved makeup, but since finding your blog – your writing, tips and videos have helped spur me on to bigger and better things. I think it’s taken me a long time in my life to come into my own and realize there’s nothing selfish about wanting to look my best. Thanks for sharing your expertise! You’re gorgeous girl!

Pretty! I did the green shadow too, but I was in a hurry so mine was simple. I put Clinique’s cream shadow in Sunlit Palm all over my lid up to my brow bone, then added a second layer over my lid. I also applied Sephora’s pencil eyeliner in green above my upper lash line and on my lower rim. Of course, I finished off with two coats of mascara. I’d send a pic’ if I took any, but I love this new feature where we can add photo’s of our looks 🙂

I LOVEEE MAC Paint Pots!! The only eyeshadow that doesn’t crease on my super oily eyelids.
I will get a more neutral shade to use it as primer. Thanks for the idea!! Loved the tutorial too!! 😀
