What do you get when you mix exciting, emerging female musicians, a whole lot of creativity and makeup?
Here’s what: you get the MAC Future Forward collection (coming as a series of mini collections starting March 17th, exclusively online)!
Four future forward musicians partnered with the eponymous brand to release a unique collection that will launch in four parts and, you guys, it’s really great! (MAC has been bringing it!)
While all part of one cohesive collection, each of the musician sub-collections will launch as standalone capsules on separate dates.
This is important to note: if one of these unique products appeals to you (or if you’re a huge fan of the recording artist), then be sure to mark your calendar to snag your prize, because these pieces will not be launching simultaneously like in a traditional MAC collection.
- R&B and Pop artist Tinashe will release Eyeshadow x 9 Tinashe ($38 each) on March 17th.
- Pop musician Halsey brings us a lipstick in Halsey ($17 each) on March 31st.
- Rapper extraordinaire Dej Loaf will release Dej Loaf Lipglass ($15 each) on April 14th.
- And last, but certainly not least, modern funk artist Lion Babe will release Liquidlast Liner in Lion Babe ($21 each) on April 28th.
I love that each product brings the spirit of its associated artist, while all of the items come together and look quite “spring” while doing so. (At least spring where I live in Wisconsin, which is often grey and punctuated with rich pops of beautifully unexpected color.)
And while some may not seem approachable for day-to-day wear (I’m lookin’ at you, Halsey lipstick), I’ve been loving just how versatile a non-neutral shadow palette and a gold liner can be.
Hitting us with nine shades (some of which are permanent, some of which are not) Eyeshadow x 9 Tinashe is a beautiful mix of soft browns, purples and neutral greens. The shades pair together beautifully along the lines of a tic-tac-toe board; the top, middle and bottom three look stunning together, but top to bottom and diagonal pairings are also cohesive. Eyeshadow x 9 Tinashe isn’t what I’d typically look for in a palette, but it ticks all my boxes and creates a vast array of looks as dynamic as the singer herself. (In other words, I LOVE IT.)
Halsey lipstick is a rich, opaque and matte green-toned stone grey. It’s not dry at all and applies like a dream. I’ll be honest with you, although it’s not a shade I’d wear out regularly, I’m astonished at how wearable it looks. Given that I work an office job, I’m conditioned to stick to “safe” shades (*cough* I still wear some pretty out there lipsticks at work *cough*), but I could see myself reaching for this to mix with something else at the very least.
The Lipglass in Dej Loaf feels like the rapper’s music sounds. It’s comfortable, but assertive and something I would definitely wear every day because it’s a nude that makes my lips look plump and doesn’t clash with the eye shadow I’m wearing, whatever it may be. (And because Dej Loaf is so sassy, I have a little extra spring in my step when I wear it!)
The gloss pairs perfectly with Lion Babe Liquidlast Liner — a true gold. It’s a rich, reflective, deep 24-carat gold and adds a flash of brightness to muted looks.
The MAC Future Forward collection will be available exclusively online starting March 17th. Be sure to watch your calendar for the three subsequent drops — and to blast the artist’s music when you apply their shadow or polish your pout!
Are you a Tinashe, Halsey, Dej Loaf or Lion Babe fan? Which of their mini collections appeals to you the most?

i can’t think of when i would wear that gray lippie, but i must haz it! every swatch i’ve seen online, including your beautiful one here, has convinced me it is an inevitability. thank you!

I cannot believe that I liked it on myself! I pulled it out the box and went “ha!” but then I tried it on and was strangely impressed. Believe it or not I could see it being, in some way, wearable!

I like the colors in the palette was I wasn’t wowed by some of the swatches I’ve seen. Being very pale, I find that black lipstick always looks better than grey unless the grey has a pearl or duo chrome finish.

Halsey is so strange and I love it! Is it too Halloween? Maybe, yes, no?
Jessica Revitte says
Given what I do by day it’s probably a little Halloween for me, but if you’re someone who plays with wild colors on a daily basis it’s actually somewhat “neutral.”

Oh no… The 1st MAC collection that I don’t like!! I’m sad, my wallet is happy. Great pics, post and review!
Jessica Revitte says
Thank you, Lauren! I understand your feelings, the colors are a little “out there.” 🙂

The palette looks really nice, a good mix of neutrals and colorful shades, I like it!

Hmm, can’t deny that the colors in the eyeshadow quad coordinate well with each other. I wasn’t planning on picking anything up, but then I do love purples and certain greens, and the fact that it swatches well makes it appealing.

Hmmmm I don’t know, the colors just really speak to me. I like the look of the palette though, but I don’t think I’d actually wear a lot of the shades in it.

I think MAC is being creative, bold, daring, edgy, & artsy with this collection, which I think is great because that’s their brand & appeals to their base. And I totes consider myself loyal to the brand. This is an easy pass for me but I’m anxiously waiting for the Chris Lee x MAC collection in May because there’s a purple blush that I NEED! (Hope I got the name right ?)

There are a LOT of collections coming I can’t wait for. Charlotte Olympia, the Chris Chang collection etc. So amazing!

All Hands on Deck from the 9 pan palette is screaming my name. I have a lot of single round-pan eyeshadows from various brands, but I don’t have a color that’s similar to All Hands on Deck. I may just buy the palette for that color alone. >_<

I’m really loving the looks of Halsey. I’ve been into gray lipsticks the last few months. They’re strangely wearable.

On season 2 of Broad City, Ilana was rocking some crazy lip colors including grey, which actually looked quite wearable! Might give it a try!

Thanks for the review and photos! I adore Halsey lipstick even though I can’t imagine many places/occasions where I’ll feel comfortable wearing it — grey is just such a great color for me, I really want it. I love the greens and purples in Tinashe as well, am thinking of getting it, too 🙂 I’m not very good at stalking MAC limited edition releases, we’ll see if I have any luck with this one!
Jessica Revitte says
If I was just looking at this collection online I don’t think I would have realized how great some of the colors are myself. I cannot recommend the palette enough!

This is such a creative line! While I don’t think I could rock all of these products, I’m really digging some of the more dramatic shades, like that grey lipstick.

A big confession here: I have never even heard about any of the artists before they lend their name (and creativity) to the collections. I am really old, I guess.
Jessica Revitte says
You are not alone! Although I’ve heard of Dej Loaf because her song has been on the radio a LOT lately, the others were new discoveries for me. It also made me feel a little “out of touch.” 🙂
