MAC Cult of Cherry: T-Minus Two Weeks and Counting

Published in: MAC Makeup, News

Here’s a brief peak at some of the products from MAC’s upcoming Cult of Cherry collection. I haven’t been this excited about a MAC collection since … well, since the last MAC collection.

What makes Cult of Cherry noteworthy? For me it’s the rich reds, dark plums and chocolate browns. The collection includes nine lipsticks (four Mattenes), two blushes, five Lipglasses, three eye shadow quads, two nail polishes and Zoom Lash mascara (also part of MAC’s permanent collection).

Tempting Quad

What do you think of Tempting Quad? It houses four shadows for $36.

  • Next to Nothing: A pinky beige shimmer shadow; on me it shows up more pink.
  • Tempting: OMG. Where has this rich, shimmery golden brown been all my life? It just melts into my skin. What a fabulous crease shade.
  • Dark Edge: A sheer, deep chocolate brown semi-matte that’s a bit on the cool side. I really like this in the outer V.
  • Sharp: This shimmery green-gold shade turned out to be a nice surprise. In the pan it looked a little garish, but I like the way it looks on my lids.

On this eye that’s Next to Nothing on my brow bone, Tempting in the crease, Sharp on the lid and Dark Edge in the Outer V. I have a feeling there are endless ways to wear this quad. It’s lurve, ladies!

Plum Du Bois Blush

Plum Du Bois blush ($17.50), a deep pinky bronze with shimmery gold, looks dark in the pan but applies pretty sheer for a blush.

Creme Cerise

Creme Cerise lipstick ($14), a shimmery yellow-taupe, looks almost tan on my lips. I like the lustre formula (thin and shiny), which feels light and moisturizing. It’s pretty, but I felt compelled to put something on top of it to jazz it up. It’ll be a shade I reach for on my way to work or when I need to look responsible.

Jampacked Lipglass

While it looks more pink in this picture, it’s actually a deep purple ($14) and has just the right touch of golden shimmer. I thought it would be too goth chick for me and difficult to apply, but it’s not at all. It makes my lips look stained, like I’ve be been snacking on dark bing cherries all day long.

I’m settling down for the night on the couch in front of the tube, waiting for America’s Best Dance Crew to start. Tabs is here with me. He says hi. We’re both rooting for Fanny Pack. :)

Have a great night.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

The eyes are great. You wear a lot of colors that I wouldn’t think are wearable (and the company’s promos don’t help either…they never have looks that are actually wearable) but then you put it on and it looks awesome. I have a much paler complexion so maybe the exact same shades wouldn’t work on me but I get really great ideas on how to work colors. I definitely wouldn’t have bought a palette with that green color before but now I see how it can be used properly.

By the way, I know you’re a fan of the Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer but have you tried the new Laura Mercier Illuminating Tinted Moisturizer SPF 20? Usually I just make my own with a bit of foundation and moisturizer mixed together but I wanted your opinion on this one.

  2. Karen says:

    Thanks Okyanus. :)

Yeah, I think MAC has wonderful colors, but many women get freaked out by their OTT beauty shots. To make ‘em wearable I guess it’s just a matter of finding different ways to make it work for you.

Even though you’re paler you’ll easily be able to pull this off, I’m guessing. Next to Nothing would be pretty on you. You probably couldn’t use Tempting (might be too dark in the crease) but you never know till ya try it!

Funny, I saw the Illuminating version the other day while I was at Laura Mercier. I didn’t try it because I was in a hurry but I was intrigued. I usually tend to stay away from illuminating foundations/tinted moisturizers because I feel like they make me too shimmery, but LM is usually pretty good about keeping looks subtle. When I go back (hopefully sometime this weekend) I’ll see if I can snag a sample to test out.

    Have a great night!

  3. Chess says:

Lucky girl, getting a sneak peek! You look fantastic! I’m amazed at how wearable you make a colour like Sharp. Oh, and you’re right about Tempting – stunning! Is it available on its own? Otherwise, I may have to grab the quad just for that.

Any insider info on the Mattenes? :) I’m dying to know if they’re as dark as the promo pics.

Give Tabs a squeeze for me! I hope he’s happy and worm-free. Have you officially adopted him yet?

  4. Karen says:

    Hi Chess,

I tested one of the Mattenes, Kirsch (will post a pic soon). It’s *dark*. Like, vampire lips dark! AYYYE!

The MAC site says Tempting is available on its own, yay. I can’t believe I’ve lived without it for this long. *tears* You will love it (I hope).

Right now Tabs has his paws draped over my shoulder and I’m carrying him around the house like a baby. I’ll give him an extra good squeeze for you.

We have to take him back to the vet on Sunday. Hopefully it’ll work out this time (SIGH). We haven’t really adopted him… but he does keep coming to the house every morning and every evening, and he has yet to turn away any meals or treats. :)

Have a good evening. Any plans for the weekend yet?

  5. Jeanne says:

Oh man, I have been waiting for Cult of Cherry since I first read about it on Specktra so many months ago. I love cherries (and quads), and with a lip gloss called “Cherry Blossom”, I just have to! This must be this year’s Smoke Signals (which I loooved), so I’m glad to get a sneak peek! I wasn’t even thinking about the blush (because hi, quads and lip products, omg), but that’s reallyreally pretty…

  6. Marisol says:

OMG…. I love that quad. Now I am going to have sweet dreams about it.

I was so disappointed at who got eliminated from ABDC. Did you watch So You Think You Can Dance? I was sooooo happy at the dancer who won. Yay!

  7. Christina says:

I have to say I love that color on your lips! Is it from this collection? I’m crossing my fingers and hoping it’s pencil and gloss, since lipstick and I do NOT get along.

That eye look is gorgeous. I’m having so much trouble getting my shadows to show up more true to color, not sure what the problem is.

  8. Tiera says:

I heart Tempting! But I’m definitely in line to get this quad anyway! Sharp looks divine! I wish I could get sneaks like you!

  9. Miss QQ says:

Hi Karen. Really, Sharp doesn’t look garish at all on you and Next to Nothing looks pink. Hopefully Sharp won’t look too loud on me too. I’m eyeing the Tempting Quad because although it has a nice mix of colours to work around. I like quads where I can use all four colours in a look. I like Spiced Chocolate Quad too but I don’t know if the colours are too red for me.

  10. Asta says:

I’m really impressed by the eyes, too. When I first saw these quads my wallet made a death wail, because I don’t think I can not buy all three. I’m a pale girl but I love shimmery neutrals and browns and can usually pull them off. Love this pink and of course the green is amazing. I’ve been doing smoky neutral eyes lately with a pop of color on the lower lashline (teal, mostly, or plum). I really want to try that with Sharp.

And by the way, how far in BD are you? =D

  11. Hey darling! Ok, so here’s the scoop. You are a MAC addict, I know…but….

Most of my eyeshadows over the years have been exclusively MAC because of their high pigmentation and their range of colors. But I went down to Sephora and bought myself the Beethoven palette by Kat Von D for Sephora and it is SO. MUCH. FUN. If you like smoky eyes, you will love this. And it’s 8 shadows (black, brown, blue, 3 shades of purple, a pearly mint color, and a gold color). For $34. I’ve been rocking these dark sultry eyes for over a week now and I feel like a true diva.

I would LOVE to see you do a little blurb on this and see your take on how to use the colors…I tried to search your blog to see if you already did…did I miss it?

    Karen,

Looks gorgeous! Did you get a sneak peek at the Spiced Chocolates quad? I really want it, but am concerned it’s too warm for this cool-toned girl. I would love your thoughts about it!

  14. gio says:

Lucky you, getting a sneak peek! You look gorgeous! I love this quad, actually I love all the quads from this collection. Did you get a sneek peek at the others too?

Are you wearing that lipglass in the photo? I absolutely love the color! I’m digging the deeper hues – I’ve always been able to pull those off pretty well with my complexion.

Thanks for the sneak peek! Any chance you saw Shadowy Lady?

Karen that quad looks boootiful on you !! You’ve definately sold me on this quad !

  17. Dao says:

Wow, this is not just makeup, it’s orgasm-worthy makeup! How did you get the products before everybody else? I can feel my money slowly want to run away to MAC already.

  18. Elle says:

As if I needed more motivation to want to buy everything in this MAC collection. ;) I made an appointment with my favorite MAC MA already for the 24th to see the collection…eeesh I can’t wait! Looks beautiful on you, Karen!

  19. Laura B says:

Jampacked sounds totally delicious. Shame us Brits will have to wait an AGE! Crushing on Sharp too – is it similar to the mono side of Fresh Green Mix?

Hope you and all the girlies have a cracking weekend – I’m going camping at the beach with Hub and some friends (in the rain probably!). But budget weekend fun does leave more money for products – woohoo!

  20. Vanessa says:

Karen you look gorgeous as always! I haven’t commented in awhile but just wanted to say hello! I love that lippie! Is that from this collection too?

  21. V says:

I just saw these yesterday when I stopped by the MAC counter to indulge in some Starflash. I think the MA could tell I was a makeup freak and an easy sell because he pulled out all the Cult of Cherry products for me to play with. Everything was absolutely gorgeous. . .I preordered probably waaay more than I should, but I really couldn’t help it. They are that freakin’ beautiful.
Karen, I have been reading for a while, but was shy to comment. . .but I love your blog!

  22. Karen says:

    Hi Jeanne,

Me too! It would be wrong to pass up a lipgloss named “Cherry Blossom.” What’s your favorite type of cherry? Mine is Bing. :)

I loved last year’s Smoke Signals, too!

  23. Karen says:

    Hi Marisol,

I don’t watch SYTYCD. My friend, who is a total reality TV hater, loves it though, and is into it.

I was extremely disappointed at the end of ABDC. Seriously… that decision came out of nowhere!

  24. Karen says:

    Hi Christina,

That’s Jampacked on top of Creme Cerise. Jampacked is super pretty in person and what’s neat about the color is that it seems to change with the light.

Hmm, regarding your shadow trubs, are you using a primer? Perhaps a Paint Pot that matches your lid shade would help bring out the color. MAC Cream Color Base in Pearl is also a good product that also brings out color intensity. Here’s a review.

  25. Karen says:

    Hi Tiera,

Sharp was a nice surprise. You’ll lurrrrve it!

  26. Karen says:

    Hi Miss QQ,

I hope Sharp works for ya… if it’s too bright you can always use a fluffier brush to apply it lightly, like the 217.

I, too, like quads where all four colors are useful, and this one is *very* wearable.

  27. Karen says:

    Hi Asta,

Oh boy! So last night I made it about half way into section three. I have about an eighth of the book to go. I’m really trying to make it last. When I’m done we’ll have to discuss. None of my friends IRL read the series and I’m DYING to talk to somebody about it.

  28. Karen says:

    Hi BernaDiva,

Yeah, I saw that at Sephora. I thought it was pretty but it wasn’t my fave.

You are the truest diva I know, girl! That’s a compliment, btw. ;) Hope you are well!

  29. Karen says:

    Hi Jaimie,

    Yay! It’s the best, yeah?

  30. Karen says:

    Hi Julia,

I haven’t had the chance to look at Spiced Chocolates but hopefully I’ll be able to this weekend. I’ll make a special note to myself seek it out how warm or cool the colors are. :)

  31. Karen says:

    Hi Gio,

Thanks my dear! Nope, not yet, but I’m hoping to this weekend! I have a feeling I’m going to fall more in love.

  32. Karen says:

    Hi Anna,

    Thank you. :) It’s a stunner… I can’t wait to play with it more!

  33. Megan says:

    The eyes are very pretty!

  34. Karen says:

    Hi Dao,

A friend at MAC sent me some stuff to preview. I’ve only seen about a third of the whole collection so far. I hope everything else is just as good.

  35. Karen says:

    Hi Elle,

WHHHHEEEE! After your visit we’ll have to trade notes. MAC junkies, unite!

  36. Karen says:

    Hi Laura B.,

It’s a bit more gold/yellow than Fresh Green Mix.

Have fun camping this weekend and stay dry. :)

  37. Karen says:

    Hi Vanessa,

Thanks, girlie! How have you been?

Yes, that’s both Creme Cerise and Jampacked together.

  38. Karen says:

    Hi V,

It’s nice to meet you. :) It sounds like you had a fun time at MAC. What were your faves from the collection?

  39. Karen says:

    Hi Megan,

Thanks! When I do this look again I’m going to work on the blending a bit more…

  40. lexi says:

Ugh I guess I’ll start saving up now! i wonder if there’ll be a month where I’ll actually NOT buy any make-up! I’m digging the Tempting Quad – if that green gold works for you then I can get away with it too!

  41. Daya says:

MAC junkie reporting in! LOL I was actually going to *pass* on the Cult of Cherry collection and await the Suite Array collection in September. Can’t do that anymore! :) Do let us know how you feel about the Spiced Chocolates. My eyes are on that and the So Scarlet lip. Looks BEAUTIFUL on you!! :)

  42. Michelle says:

I would never have looked twice at that quad because the greenish color would’ve scared me away. But after looking at your pics I can see that it totally is wearable and fun. I’m excited to see what the other quads look like.

  43. Karen says:

    Hi Michelle,

Me too! I can’t wait to see the other two. I hope they are just as fab. :)

  44. Karen says:

    Hi Daya,

Thanks! I will check out the Spiced Chocolates hopefully today at the MAC Studio Talk session I’m going to this afternoon.

  45. Karen says:

    Hi Lexi,

LOL, welcome to my world. Just when you think you don’t need another brown eyeshadow, something fabulous always seems to come along to tempt you!

  46. Steph says:

    Karen,
This quad looks great on you! I was hoping to pass on this because of the all dupes but, Sharp is just gorgeous! How do you think it compares to overgrown and bitten?
