Shhh… I have a secret beauty tip. If you ever wake up looking like an extra in Michael Jackson’s Thriller video, reach for MAC Woodwinked eyeshadow ($14). Its warm, golden shimmer restores life to dead tired eyes.

And good thing it does because I needed it this morning. I was CRANKY! I haven’t slept well this week and for the third day in a row woke up looking like a zombie. When it got time for me to get ready for work, I really wanted to just leave my ratty hair uncombed, throw on some sweats and skip my makeup altogether (gasp!).

But I knew that walking around like that all day long would have made me feel even worse, so I threw on a dress and picked up my pan of Woodwinked.

Fifteen minutes later, zombie girl had left the building. Woodwinked made my eyes look bright, alert and awake. Easy, and fewer calories than a latte.

Look at you, glamor girl! You look hawt! Not at all zombie-esque! When I’m feeling run-down I like to put Stila’s Kitten in the inner corners and use a cheery pink lip gloss like Chanel’s Astral or Imaginaire!

  2. KK says:

Girl! you look too fab! Is that wind in your hair? ;)
I love to put on a pink cheek like benefit dandelion and not wear any powder so I look kinda fresh!

    HooRaY…its almost friday!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. Karen says:

    Hi Glosslizard,

Thanks! Maybe I should’ve put a before picture to show the complete un-zombification. Then again, I try to avoid scaring unsuspecting beauty blog surfers, LOL.

Oh – and everybody looks hot when there’s a fan blowing on ‘em! Gawd, I love that thing.

I still don’t have my Astral. *pouts*

How was your day? I am about to watch a movie and then hopefully pass out.

  4. Karen says:

    Hi KK,

Thanks hon! Yeah, girl, that’s the fan in action. Talk about a miracle worker… I wish I could have that thing follow me throughout the day so I would never have a tow up moment, LOL!

My friend LOVES Dandelion and Dallas. When I use her bathroom I sneak some on my cheeks sometimes!

I am SO ready for Friday. Doing anything fun this weekend?

  5. Jennifer says:

    WOW
    You look SO smoking today

  6. Karen says:

    Hi Jennifer,

Aww, thanks! I owe it all to the magic o’ Woodwinked!

  7. Amanda P says:

Shut up! This is one of the best looks you’ve posted. You look like a diva! Where’d you get the funky-pattered dress?

I just got back from Vegas with some goodies from Sephora. I updated my makeup with Nars Orgasm blush and gloss and Benefit Bad Gal mascara, which are all classics. But my favorite purchase was Too Faced Emotionally Charged Lip Gloss. It appears clear when it comes out of the tube, but the moment it hits your lips it adjusts to your “perfect shade” based on your mood. On the side of the box is the interpretation of each shade, such as “Hot and Bothered.” The color comes out so bright and fun. Plus, it’s more like a stain so the color lasts a while. I think you’d love it, Karen!

  8. Karen says:

    Hi Amanda P.,

Thanks! I got that dress couple of years ago from some random store in Fillmore St in SF. :)

I’m intrigued by your gloss! I wonder what my shade would be if I tried it on right now (“Sleepy and Tired”? LOLOLOLOZ). I will make a note to try it on when I go to Sephora. (Hopefully this weekend!)

  9. Meaghan says:

Love Woodwinked! Do you have Soba? I love to use those two in combination! No kidding on the so glad its Friday :) Are you doing anything fun for the long weekend?

I use Chanel Biphase liquid eyeshadow in Cascade. It is slivery white, and the best thing is, it is water soluble but it does not slide or fade on my eyelids all day. Powder eyeshadow can be layered on it too!

  11. Marisol says:

Vavavoom! You look fantastic. I wish I looked like that when I was cranky.

Marisols last blog post..omg… I totally pumped my fist in the air.

  12. Bridget says:

I agree with everyone else. You look great! I love how rich the colors look on you. Sometimes I get mad when things look vibrant in the pan then I put it on and it’s barely there.

I wore the Rimmel Jungle green to the bar tonight and it totally stands out. When I went to the bathroom I was like “Oh yeahhhh.”haha

    Windblownnnn! :)

You look stunning, and suspiciously well-rested, given your post blurb! I may just have to grab me some Woodwinked and see what miracles it can perform for me after a sleepless night!

  16. Anna says:

Karen you look hot girl !!! No sign on zombieness at all !!!! I think you’re having us on !!!

If I’m having a zombie day, I reach for Naked lunch,Era, Bronze and Modest tone for a super nude look. Paired with lune blushcreme and I’m ready for my close-up.

Hope you sleep better soon ! messes up your day when you’ve had a crap nights sleep !

  17. Julia says:

You look fantastic! Nobody will ever know you had a bad night of sleep! Is woodwinked good for cool toned gals? I’m just hopping on the MAC train and need some good staples!

  18. Terre says:

You look amazing! I agree, no one could tell you were having a zombie morning.

  19. Christine says:

Make funny faces in the mirror :D

Skip around the house, bug the boy, maybe pout at him.

Oh, and of course, Starbucks is a good pick-me-up, but that has calories.

  21. Karen says:

    Hi Meaghan,

Yup, I have Soba, and have done that combo many a time. Great minds think alike! I sing Soba’s praises quite often on this site. :)

HOPEFULLY I’ll get this story that I have to write done today so that I can fool around a lil’ bit this weekend. There’s no rest for the weary, unfortunately!

    How about you?

  22. Karen says:

    Hi Miss QQ!

I’ve played with those eyeshadows before and they are fun. How do you apply it? With fingers, or with a brush?

    Happy, happy, FRIDAY!

  23. Karen says:

    Hi Marisol,

LOL, you don’t know how cranky I was in that picture! I swear, it’s all about the fan. I need one of those to follow me around all day.

Are you ready for the weekend?

  24. Karen says:

    Hi Bridget!

That is one of the things that bugs me, too. I bought a quad from L’oreal a few months ago called “Aishwarya Greens” and when I applied the shadows they weren’t as vibrant as they were in the pan. What helped for me was to put a base underneath it. like MAC Pearl. Another thing that is easy (and cheap) that I like to do is wet my brush with water before I swipe the brush across the pan. This seems to intensify the color a lot!

Ohhhh you took Rimmel Jungle Green out for a spin! It is a HOT color for nights out, right? What did you pair it with?

  25. Karen says:

    Hi Joey,

Woodwinked is a miracle worker! I dunno what I’d do without it… well, I suppose I’d just embrace my zombie-ness and walk around scaring poor, unsuspecting folks in the vicinity!

Happy Friday! Doing anything fun this weekend?

  26. Karen says:

    Hi Karen B.,

OMG! Not only am I glad just taught me some Dutch, but I’m also glad that the word was ZOMBIE! LOLOL! I don’t know when that will come in handy but someday I think it will, call me crazy.

    How do you say “vampire”?

  27. Karen says:

    Hi Chess,

Fo’ reals! I love that fan!

Woodwinked is such an amazing shade. You don’t really need those other colors, either, if you’re feeling too lazy. Sometimes I just put it on my lid and underneath my lower lash line, and then tightline the upper and lower water line with Graphblack and I’m out the door. It’s easy and will make you look easily undead, LOLOLOL!

Do you have a fave product that you use after sleepless nights?

  28. Karen says:

    Hi Anna,

When I was at the Pro store last Friday I was admiring Naked Lunch AND Era. Now Imma have to pick them up to complete my un-zombification. :)

I don’t have any Blushcremes (yet). What else do you like besides Lune?

  29. Karen says:

    Hi Julia,

Hmmm, I think it might be neutral enough for cooler-toned gals to pull off… try it! You never know if it’ll be your next favorite thing.

Oh! You gotta get Shroom eyeshadow, for sure. I just read in Allure that it one of their Beauty awards. :)

  30. Karen says:

    Hi Terre,

Awww, thanks! Little do you know how ready I was to join the other zombies at that moment. :)

Happy Friday! Doing anything fun this weekend?

  31. Karen says:

    Hi Christine,

I have my Starbucks with me this morning. I’m armed and ready for danger!

Give your puppy a big hug and kiss for me!

  36. Dao says:

Girl, you look radiant! I totally dig this look of yours! My all-time favorite is Amber Lights because it can brighten up anything. I use it as a lid color and sometimes as a contour color (weird but it does work!) Do you have it? I need to check out Woodwink on my next field trip to MAC hehe.

  37. Karen says:

    Thanks Dao!

I don’t have Amber Lights yet! If you like it I think I could probably wear it too… I’ll put it on my list for my net MAC field trip too. :)

  38. Eru says:

    Woah Karen! You look stunning~~
I love golden looks on tanned skins <3 I’m adfraid gold dosen’t look that good on me. :(
By the way,I bought an Aqualumiere Gloss! when I saw them today for the first time I inmediately thought about you and your Aqualumiere post. Hehehe.

The result is nowhere near a zombie or anything else tired/dead for that matter! Make up sure does seem to help at days when you feel absolutely awful. Wonderful job, Karen!

Yeah, I really enjoyed my little break from being online. You get more time to yourself, it’s surprising how fast time flies when online.

Yup, had fun at my aunt’s! We have a 30-year age difference but it doesn’t feel that big at all. Most of the time we get along really well. :)

Yeah, the shoes are the highest I can go. I still feel a lil’ wobbly when walking in them, but I guess that’s the name of the game, lol. Still got one week time to learn, the party is May 31.

What do you have planned for the weekend? Have a good one!

  40. Abby says:

    Hi Karen!
First things first, girl your blog ROCKS! I am addicted.

Okay, this post was perfect–I JJJJJUSTTTTT reordered another Woodwinked (in the pan, cuz I have the big ole palette and have 3 more spaces to fill) bc, get this….I *had* one, but lost it! How can I lose an eyeshadow? I mean that sucka is gone. I searched and searched. So now it’s on it’s woodywinky way back to me and I’m going to be a zombie no more!!

I also love MAC Nylon, for the inner corners— instant pulse for me on those mornings when I wake up looking like the undead.

Keep up the beautiful work, I really do truly love the HECK outta your blog, I visit it every single day from down here in San Diego.

    Abby

  41. Lehea says:

I can’t even tell that you barely had any sleep. Woodwinked is awesome! I think I’ll try that next time I lose a few hours of Zs. Normally I just curl my eyelashes and put 1 coat of mascara. That usually does it for me.

  42. Miss QQ says:

    Hi Karen

I apply the Chanel liquid eyeshadow with my fingers. It’s easy to apply and can be on its own or as a base, layering on it powder eyeshadow. I like to add powder eyeshadow and depending on the shade of the liquid eyeshadow, the final outcome becomes more intense/brighter.

The best part is that it washes almost completely off with water (together with the powder that you layer on top). I can just use a little makeup remover to remove the left over shiny speckles.

  43. Karen says:

    Hi Eru,

YAY! Which shade did you get?!?

  44. Karen says:

    Hi Aleks,

You’ll be fine on the heels after some practice. Just wear them around the house for a few hours each day and then soon you’ll be running in those bad boys. :)

Your graduation party is the same day that my younger brother has his graduation ceremony!

This weekend I am working on a story. We have a long holiday weekend, which is nice, because then I’ll hopefully be able to sneak in some fun time. It’s very gloomy and overcast today so I don’t feel so bad about staying in. How about you?

  45. Karen says:

    Hi Abby,

WOW! Thanks! :) I’ve often wondered how eyeshadows can get lost, too. Trax was MIA for about six months and then I found it underneath the dresser drawer. I’m glad Woodwinked is on its way back to you! I dunno how I ever survived without that color.

OH! I don’t have Nylon. Must put that on the list. :)

BTW, I love San Diego. I learned to surf there so it always has a special place in my heart.

Have a great weekend and talk soon, yah?

  46. Karen says:

    Hi Lehea,

Woodwinked is a miracle worker. It should win an award or something!

BTW, which mascara do you like? I’m always on the hunt for a new one.

  47. Karen says:

    Hi Miss QQ,

I will have to play with those again when I go back to the Chanel counter. I’ve seen ‘em and wasn’t quite sure what to make of them. It’s good to know that it’s very easy to use and it’s versatile (both HUGE plusses in my book).

  48. Lehea says:

I’m seriously hooked on L’oreal Voluminous in Black. I use the waterproof kind.

  49. Karen says:

I love that stuff too, Lehea! Do you use the Carbon Black version? It’s awesome…

  50. Abby says:

Karen, you MUST get Nylon!! It’s so perfect for the inner corners and a lil’ brow highlight.

WOOT! I got my Woodwinked (oh, and an Oh Baby l/g and a Lychee Luxe l/g) and I’ve been playing around with them all weekend. Meh, I’m sure I’ll find that other pan of WW now that I bought its replacement, right??

Yah, Trax is great!! It was one of the first shades to fill my palette. It goes great with Sketch. Esp. for us brown-eyed galz.

Awwww…San Diego surfing….mmmm, that has been on my list of things to do since I moved here ten years ago LOLZ! I need to get motor-vated on that now that it’s full on beach season. But you’re up in SF, my 2nd fave city in CA. SF is so wonderrrrfullllll…… :D

U have a fabulous holiday weekend and thanks for helping us all stay gaw-geous!
