MAC Cosmetics Blue and Green Face of the Day

We’ve had a stretch of unseasonably warm weather here in the Bay Area, but this morning started off overcast and gloomy. To brighten up my Monday, I did this blue and green eye with MAC Parrot and Sprout.

mac-cosmetics-parrot-fotd-sprout-eye-2

I didn’t feel like going all crazy with the blending, so to keep it simple I limited myself to just three eyeshadow colors. If you’re new to makeup, this would be a super easy look to try! Please ask if you have any questions about reproducing it yourself. If I don’t know the answer, I’ll track down someone who does.

Color map…

  1. MAC Ochre Style on the browbone
  2. MAC Sprout on the inner half of the eyelid and just barely into the crease
  3. MAC Parrot on the outer half of the eyelid and slightly into the crease
  4. MAC Indigo Eye Pencil on the outer 2/3 of the lid and on the upper waterline
  5. MAC Powersurge Eye Pencil on the lower waterline

If the blue and green together are a lil’ too much color for you, you can try the look using neutral pairs. I have a feeling gold and brown or pink and brown on the lid and a neutral shade like MAC Shroom on the browbone would look awfully pretty.

To complete the look…

Over the entire eyelid

Brows

  • MAC Concrete eyeshadow

Lashes

  • Stila Multi-Effect Mascara in Black

To banish those nasty undereye circles

Face

  • Laura Mercier Oil-free Tinted Moisturizer in Almond
  • Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Powder

Cheeks

Lips

I realize the cheese factor is pretty high in the above pic, but it makes me laugh. It looks like I should be selling toothpaste or something equally corny.

Did you rock the brights today? What kind of eye look did you wear?

    Hi Indian Girl,

Thank you! Do you have Sprout? I think it might be discontinued, but I’m guessing you could easily find a similar replacement green.

  3. Alexa says:

    hello!
    what line was sprout from?
its really pretty, but i don’t remember it!
i did a lavander eye that was smokey on the outer corners

  4. Karen says:

    Hi Alexa,

It’s a few years old and when I bought I am pretty sure it was from the permanent color collection. I think it might be discontinued, though (boo hoo). I forgot I had it! It was like finding buried treasure. :)

Pretty! Did you use MAC colors?

  5. Louisa says:

Is that vineyard vines polo? I love your eyeshadow coordinating with your outfit!

  6. Chess says:

Love it! And I love the full-face shot, too. Heehee! Very cute. You could totally be a Colgate spokesgirl. Check out those pearly-whites! You have incredibe teeth.

  7. tania says:

Alas Karen I have a cold so no eyes for me! However I went to work and rocked some studio fix fluid, mineralize skinfinish powder, smooth harmony heatherette bp on cheeks, coconutty lipstick, and softnote tendertones. If I weren’t sick I would have worn some steamy with some bang on blue mixed in.Soft brown on lid and claire de lune on the browbone.

  8. Karen says:

    Hi Louisa,

It got that shirt at Old Navy about a year ago. :) And thanks for the compliment! Did you wear bright colors today, or did ya go neutral?

  9. Karen says:

    Hi Chess,

Aww, thanks! I know, it’s such a super cheesy shot… I should be holding a tube of Crest or somethin’.

    Thank goodness for braces, LOL!

  10. Karen says:

    Hi Tania,

Oh no, you poor thing. I hope you feel better soon. You do a lot better than I do when I’m sick… I fill in my brows and that’s all I can muster.

Take care of yourself! *passes tissue*

  11. Marisol says:

Your full face picture reminds me of a model in the Land’s End catalog trying to sell me some logo wear for work. LOL.

I really like the color combo. I always find it hard to use Parrot at work because it can be so bright and that is a no no at my job.

  12. Indian Girl says:

    Hey Karen,
I dont have sprout but I have an ULTA shadow which I guess I could use for this look…

  13. Karen says:

    Hi Marisol,

LOLOL… I know it’s so totally corny! “Buy this polo.”

I know what you mean about Parrot’s brightness. I’ve toned it down for work by wearing it just on the lid, Soft Brown in the crease and Shroom on the browbone. I’ve found that keeping it to the lid area gives just a slight flash of color.

Another way I’ve used it in the past was by applying it as a liner on the upper lash line with a wet 266 brush while keeping the rest of the eye neutral. That too, gives just a hint of color without being too in yo’ face.

  14. Karen says:

    Hi Indian Girl,

My homegirl *loves* those Ulta shadows! I don’t have any (yet) but one day will get around to it. Any green with gold hints will work, I’m guessing.

  15. Mariah says:

OMG!! This is SO PRETTY! Honestly, I think this may be the best look you’ve done this month!! Ooh! It’s so pretty, pretty!!! I totally want to try this now! I never have seen Sprout, and it looks so adorable! Is it always that shimmery and jewel-toned? OMG!

And DAAAHMN! You got the blending skills lady! So fantastic!! :D

  16. Joanna says:

    Karen,

I love this look! I find that greens compliment my brown eyes more than any other color.

I tried the Violet mascara on top of Covergirl Lashblast. More people noticed it was violet mascara :P

  17. Karen says:

    Hi Mariah,

Yup, Sprout is always that shimmery! :) It’s a very pretty green that I picked up a few years ago purely by accident. I was deep in my brown phase and decided to just try something different. I think it might be discontinued, though…

Aww, thanks my dear! I was so lazy this morning and this was the most I could muster. :) I used the 224 like crazy! Do you have it? I hate it as a crease brush but as a blending brush it’s the shizzzz!

  18. Karen says:

    Hi Joanna,

Me too! I only discovered that recently, LOL. I was slow to get on that train.

Oh, I bet your lashes looked really beautiful and contrasted your eyes nicely!

Now I want violet mascara, too. :)

  19. vivien says:

OMGAHH this is SOO gorgeous on you! Glad I have Parrot eyeshadow, now I need Sprout!! Love that shirt on you, green is most definitely your color!

  20. Lehea says:

Love the look and the smile! :P Not too familiar with Sprout e/s. What’s a good substitute for that?

  21. I’m loving blue and green on you.

    You’re so pretty sweets!!

    Hi Vivien,

Hooray for Parrot! I’m glad you have it, too. :) If you find Sprout let me know — last time I heard it was discontinued.

Did you have a good day?

  23. Karen says:

    Hi Lehea,

Hmmm, I’m guessing that Swimming would be a good sub…Sprout is pretty old school, LOL. I dunno what possessed me to take it out this morning, but I’m glad I did. :)

    How was your Monday?

  24. Karen says:

    Iheartmakeup!!!

Thank you, hon! How was work today?

I am looking forward to playing with a few colors for the Ash at Cannes look. When I finish the story I’m writing I am sooo spending a good chunk of time playing. Can’t wait!

  25. Mariah says:

    Karen,

Yeah, I do have a brush just like that one, that I picked up from Sephora! I love it to bits!! I’m so gonna have to try this now! I actually have been using the brush on my outer v lately, because it totally does blend better than other brushes!

Mariahs last blog post..Finally got a book I ordered.

  26. Laura says:

OOoh ooh! I love viva glam v lipstick! You wear it very well. And I love your teeth and smile. It’s goorgeous =)

  27. Karen says:

    Hi Mariah,

Sometimes I use mine in my outer V too; I use small, circular motions… a friend at MAC friend taught me that! I like it, but the results aren’t always consistent for me. I think I just need to practice more.

LOVE those Sephora brushes, BTW! :)

  28. Karen says:

    Hi Laura,

Viva Glam V rules! Do you have the lipgloss? What do you think of it?

  29. Ping. says:

oh i love the colour on you! look so fresh and effortless hehe

  30. Mukho says:

Aww… there I was, gazing dreamily at your pearly whites and thinking how nice it would be to own a set of that, and you go and call it cheesy. Nopes, nothing of that sort, just a cheery, pretty pic in my favourite jewelled blue-greens! :)

  31. Anna says:

Awww, Karen that look is soooo pretty !!

As my dad says “Thats a mightly fine toothpaste advert !!

I’ve been rocking the neutrals mostly, not ventured into the rest of the color chart yet. But this has definately inspired me to be more adverturous !!

  32. Glosslizard says:

I love the look (you know I’m a blues and greens kinda girl)! I totally see you holding a pack of Orbit gum and saying “Fabulous!” ;)

Strangely enough, I ended up going very neutral yesterday! I did a blended brown eye with Mulch and Stila’s Kitten, and Brule on the browbone. Shu eyeliner in matte brown and black mascara finished the eyes. I used Gazelle glossimer and added a pop of color to my cheeks with beauty powder blush in uber-scary Sweetness! It was sort of an experiment, I actually meant to punch up the look later and never got the time! It was nice though!

  33. Dao says:

That is so hawt! I love Viva Glam V, definitely going to exchange Prrr for it. Thanks Karen.

  34. Karen B says:

Love it! That is so a look I’ll try out.
I totally rocked the Mutiny pigment today :):) In a slightly washed out way though, I had piano exam at school so no bright bright Mutiny, but it still rocked :)

  35. Karen says:

    Hi Ping,

Thanks, my friend! I hope you try this look. :) It’s fun and more importantly, easy!

  36. Karen says:

    Hiya Anna,

LOL, somebody hand me some Crest!

I hear ya about rocking the neutrals. Neutrals are like, my middle name. I don’t always feel this adventurous but it’s a good excuse to try new combos. :) Maybe you could start with a violet… I’ve been really liking MAC Star Violet lately, ’cause it’s not an in-your-face purple, but a purple that almost looks like it could be a neutral brown.

  37. Karen says:

    Hi Glosslizard,

LOL, true! Or maybe I should be holding some fruit, or something!

Wow, girl… I think this is the first time I’ve ever heard of you doing a brown eye. :) How are you liking the Mulch?

  38. Karen says:

    Hi Dao,

Girl! Get thee some Viva Glam V, asap! Honestly, I never understood the hype surrounding Prrr. I think it’s vastly over-rated, much like Maybelline Great Lash.

  39. Karen says:

    Hi Karen B.,

Oh, I like looks that offer just a suggestion of color on the eyes. I have been really into eye washes and lip stains lately. What did you pair it with? And how did the exam go?

  40. Karen says:

    Heya Mukho,

Aww, thanks. Okay, I mean cheesy in a good way!

  41. Anastasia says:

I would look like a drag queen if I rocked that look – but it looks cute on you! Maybe tomorrow I will try it with some violets or pinks instead. I’m an ivory skinned girl so those colour palettes may be easier to pull off.

  42. Glosslizard says:

It’s great! A fantastic crease shade, and a nice brown without being too boring! I don’t think I’ll do browns without a pop of something very often, but Mulch will work beautifully with deep purples, blues, or dark greens so it’s just what I need! It can be warmed up with golds or cooled down with pinks! An excellent addition to my collection! :D

  43. Bridget says:

I tried to comment last night but it wouldn’t let me and now I don’t remember what I said.haha

I do really love those colors though. They are so fun! I was reading some of your older posts and saw you had Rimmel green eye liner. I can’t remember the name but it’s a deeper green. I went out and bought and loooove it. Can’t wait to do something similiar to your look here. I love using colors!

  44. grace says:

    Hey Karen,
Today I just had shroom, vanilla and NYC Sparkle Eye dust in Champagne. A very light eye look. On my cheeks I had the balm hot mama, warmed msf & rimmel bronzer.
i had viva glam vi on my lips!

  45. Megan says:

Yesterday I was almost bare eyed…which is a never for me… but Sunday I was cleaning my car out and chasing my nephew around the yard at my dad’s house. I really wasn’t planning to be outside and only had on SPF…it was supposed to rain and never did, so I ended up getting a little sun…so yesterday I did a light pink (barely there) wash and a little brown eyeliner with mascara and lip gloss. :-) I’m pretty low key today too…

  46. Karen says:

    Hi Anastasia,

LOL, yeah, I’ve been known to rock the drag look… but only around the house for fun. I don’t really go out with crazy makeup during the day!

I bet violets and pinks would look pretty on your skin tone. Hmm, maybe some light, shimmery pastels with a pearl highlight on the browbone. :)

Are you a MAC girl, too?

  47. Karen says:

    Hi Glosslizard,

I’ve been wanting to use a few dark matte purples in my stash so I think I will try that with Mulch. It’s probably more of a fall look, but since the weather’s been cooler (I’m swearing a long sleeved shirt and a sweater today, gasp!) I think I might be able to pull it off.

Do you have Woodwinked yet? I don’t remember if you do…

  48. Karen says:

    Hi Bridget,

Hmm, I wonder what happened. Oh well, at least you can comment today and I can talk to ya!

I think you’re talking about Rimmel Jungle Green. Isn’t it great? It’s so cheap and is such a pretty color. I do wish it lasted a bit longer on the waterline, but for that bargain price I don’t have a problem with that because the pencil is at least soft.

I’ve tried other Rimmel pencils but Jungle green is my favorite by far.

Anyhoo, that’s cool that you love colors. I’m slowly getting into them more. Do you have faves that I should know about? :)

  49. Karen says:

    Hi Grace,

You sound like you’re ready for summer. I’ve never tried the Sparkle Eye Dust but I like the sound of it. :)

I just re-discovered my Viva Glam stash the other day. They are *great* colors, yah? Do you have a favorite?

  50. Karen says:

    Hi Megan,

Is this the nephew that eats your Morning Star patties? ;)

I woke up really early today and spent most of the morning working. By the time I realized I had to get to work I barely had time to curl my lashes (the blue/green look in this post was from yesterday), so today I’m looking really tow’ up. My dark circles are way out of control! At least I managed to get some Fireberry lipgloss on.

  51. Glosslizard says:

    Nope, not yet…..

  52. Karen says:

Ohh! It’s a very pretty gold. It’s on the warm side so I dunno if you’ll like it, but it’s worth checking out. It looks kinda blah in the ban, but is very pretty once ya get it on.

  53. Megan says:

LOL…no this is his little brother. The patty stealer is 7…the one I was chasing is one and a half…so he’s into everything…

I feel you on the tow up look… I’ve been really busy lately…so i’ve been trying to save as much time as possible. The little bit of tan I got actually makes a minimal look pretty though… :-) so it works for me. Fireberry is still on my list… but I think i’m waiting until next week to go pick it up. Too busy :-(

  54. Karen says:

    Hey Megan,

Yah, when kids are that age you can’t keep em from nothin’. I remember when my brother was that young, I swear you’d just set him down and then the next thing you knew he’d be somewhere where he wasn’t supposed to be making trouble. It was like he had internal baby radar or something.

I hear ya on having to save time. That’s what gloss and eyelash curlers are for! I hope you get your Fireberry soon. It better be there when you hit the counter.

  55. Glosslizard says:

I’ll definitely swatch it the next time I’m at MAC. Prob’ly this Thursday! ;)

  56. Karen says:

Sweet! It’s a Veluxe Pearl formula, which for means “it’s like buttah!”

Woodwinked was meant for your 217, LOL.

  57. Lehea says:

Awesome! I have Parrot, Swimming and Viva Glam V lipstick, so I think I’ll try out that look this weekend. Going to Carmel on Sunday. Gawd I hope it’s sunny that day! Monday is my day for errands, so it helps me get stuff out of the way before I go to work on Tuesday. :)

  58. Glosslizard says:

Oh yeah, I loves me some veluxe pearl!

  59. Karen says:

    Hi Lehea,

Sweeeet! Let me know how it turns out. Get your 224/217 ready to blend. :) What will you use on the browbone?

I love Carmel. It’s kind of far from me so I like to go down there and stay for the weekend. Last time I was there I saw Jennie Garth in a clothing store… so random!

Have fun at work tomorrow. What do you do?

  60. Karen says:

    Heya Glosslizard,

I know, VP totally frickin’ rules! I want the three VP shades from the Neo Sci Fi collection. HAWT!

  61. Glosslizard says:

And the VP’s from Cool Heat? I can’t wait!

  62. Karen says:

Yah, those are pretty too! GET THAT 217 READY!

  63. Glosslizard says:

    Ready, locked and loaded!

  64. Karen B says:

With my paintpot barestudy, ricepaper and a beigey colour i had lying around.

The exam went well :) I was so relieved!

soooo pretty…love the color combo, tried it out with similar colors, sad to say not the same effect i look more on the clownish side, but u look stunning….its a good look, maybe i’ll try it with diff colors….any suggestions?

  66. Karen says:

LOL, Glosslizard! I can so see you in front of your mirror all ready to blend!

  67. Karen says:

    Hi Karen B.,

Oh, you’re look sounds pretty. :)

Good job on your test, girl. Don’t you love it when you take an exam and do well? It feels good inside, from what I remember.
