The lion’s share of the MAC Brooke Candy collection are definitely the amazing lippies, but the other items that sparked my interest were the eye glosses. I’d never used an eye gloss before, but I’d seen them floating around the YouTube-o-sphere, and they always looked so interesting to me.
There are two in this collection — White-Yin and Black-Yang.
Not gonna lie, I’m not quite sure what to think of these… I think they’re made for a very specific kind of look and a very specific kind of person.
I love what Jessica did with some of the other MAC Eye Glosses to create a cool, editiorial, grunge-y look, but no matter what you do, you’ll end up with creased, oily-looking eye makeup, which, obviously, isn’t everyone’s cup o’ tea.
They are also crazy sticky, which I guess makes sense for what they are, but they feel so weird on my eyelids. I just can’t deal with it. As you open your eyes and blink, things just stick together.
I wanted to do a more wearable look using White-Yin, but I think I kind of failed. I had this vision of myself using a shimmery champagne eye shadow all over my lid, then putting the clear gloss on top, and I thought I’d end up with this lovely, angelic eye look, but instead I got… Well, I don’t really know what I got, but I didn’t get that. I don’t hate it, but I definitely don’t love it either.
While I got the shine I was looking for, the eye shadow I put underneath chunked up and got nasty. I just wasn’t a huge fan of how it looked. I might try using it completely on its own without anything under it to see if that gives me a better result.
You couldn’t have any foundation or anything on underneath it, though, ’cause that would get nasty too.
All in all, these eye glosses do exactly what they’re supposed to do, so they’re not bad by any means! But they create a very specific look that isn’t for everyone.
What do you think? Have you ever worn eye gloss before?

If they didn’t crease, it would be another story, but I don’t know what I would do with something sticky that I know will crease fast on my eyes…

Seriously! If they didn’t crease they would be amazing! Pretty sure that’s impossible though 🙁

Why are your eyebrows so perfect?! No fair!
Jen Clark says
Haha you’re so nice! Thank you!

Could it work as a lip gloss, though??
Jen Clark says
Hm i’m not sure if they would or not! They’re pretty firm and REALLY sticky, so i’m not sure they would work very well.

I haven’t worn eye gloss myself, but I have styled people for ads (I sold handmade purses for years), and yes I would put eyegloss on my models for those shoots, because it looks so pretty in photos. And then they’d wash off before doing real things. These products would be easier than mixing gloss medium with pigment, which is what I did at the time.

That’s so cool you had your own business! They do look so beautiful in photos!

like the clear one, it would def be my cup of tea
Jen Clark says
Awesome! How would you wear it? I really want to make it work so any input is much appreciated 🙂

I never have tried these but like I see in the comment section they can be sticky.
If they had a nice formula O would love to use it on my eyelid as you did , but also on the high bone of my cheeks as a kind of highlighter . Only the clear one .

I’m not into sticky glosses and creasing on my lids. I think glosses can look pretty, but these seem more of an editorial product for professional MUAs to me.
Jen Clark says
That’s what I think too! Props to the people that can make these work haha!

It looks gorgeous on you.

I was checking out one of the MAC eye glosses a few weeks ago, but not from this collection; it was a shimmery deep purple in the pan, but when I swatched it came off a little darker than it initially appeared, sort of like it would be good for a glossy+smoky eye, if that can be a thing, lol.
anyway, it was gorgeous on the back of my hand, like an extra shiny paint pot, but it was really sticky. I forgot to grab a makeup wipe to remove it and it left me feeling tacky for quite some time! (but I guess that means the product lasts at least… even if not in the most ideal fashion! 🙂 )
when one of the MAC girls came over to check in on me, she was really quick to tell me that I should steer clear– not because the product was bad in itself, but because I have hooded eyes and the gloss would basically glue my lids together… not a good look, lol.
So I see where you’re coming from, it’s not for everyone, but for those that can pull it off, it’s kind of neat. I wouldn’t mix it with powder either, though. seems like an oil and water kind of thing! 🙂

I tried one of these but ack, no, not a fan of that texture on my eyelids! So no, not my thing.

I’ve used lip gloss before on the lids to try the wet look. Lena, the gloss from MAC X Giambattista Valli a couple years ago (has it been that long?!) would work. I think the key is to just take a tiny, tiny bit. Sort of wet your finger, then pat. It did feel tacky but not insufferably so, as I remember.
Perhaps to get the look you’re aiming for, you need to mix the eye shadow with a little of the gloss?
