Please ignore the Christmas decorations behind my shoulder, LOL! I filmed this back in December before Christmas but then got too carried away with the holidays to prepare it.
I still wanted to finish it, though, because it’s a staple look of mine that I wear all year round, perfect for just about any occasion from work things to movie dates to running errands around town.
I make little tweaks to it all the time, but this time I paired the eyes with nude cheeks and lips. You could always opt for more dramatic colors to brighten it up.
Here’s the final look…
There are some steps and layering involved, but I’m sure you can do it. If you haven’t tried something like this before, it just takes a little practice.

Somebody needs to feed the tabby. 😛 Love this look Karen. Very glamorous.
Karen says
Hi Arianne,
Okay, you want to know something funny? He always has this weird knack of making a fuss the moment a video camera or a mic gets turned on. It’s like he has a sixth sense for grabbing attention. He’s divalicious that way. 🙂
How are you and Scherbs doing?
Erin says
Lookin’ good!
Karen says
Thank you, Erin!
Bella says

Lovely look and awesome tutorial. I’m also digging the nail polish you’re wearing!
Karen says
Thank you, Tigerlily. 🙂
Oh — the polish is Zoya Giovanna. One of my fave greens!
How’s your Monday going, btw?
Chaitra says
Oh i love the look! I am a fan of brown smoky eyes, makes it a lot more natural than black sometimes! 🙂
Karen says
Yay! Glad you liked this video, Chaitra.
Have a great week!

IMO, once a makeup wearer gets their own customized smokey brown eye look on point, they’re ready for anything, dressed up or down. Nars Galapagos e/s is my first Nars e/s and still my Nars favorite (tied with Taj Mahal).
Karen says
Hi Erica,
Gotta love Galapagos. Do you ever wear it wet? It’s super pretty, especially as a liner.
Happy Monday, btw!
Sylirael says
Thank you so much for both of these videos! I used the brow one today to try doing my brows for the very first time 🙂 Came out looking good!
The smoky eye is lovely – I really like brown smokey eyes, as you can kind of get away with them during the day as well! Well, maybe not on my vampire skintone, but I like them anyway 🙂
Karen says
Hi Sylirael,
Glad to hear your brows turned out nice. What products did you end up using?
Jacklyn says
Great video, Karen! I loved the little Tabs info bubbles, like a cat lady version of VH1 Pop-Up Video
Karen says
Thanks, Jacklyn. You know Tabs…he always has to get in on the action. 🙂
BTW, isn’t Pop-Up Video so fun?! I love that show.
Amanda says
I recently splurged on the NARS And God Created Woman set. It’s my first time playing with Galapagos and Coconut Grove. My face can’t handle the intensity that you can pull off, but with those two colors, I can create a smoky eye “light.”
jenna says
Great look! I love brown smokey eyes! Check out my youtube channel at youtube.com/user/biglbabyj/videos…….you are gorgeous!! Thanks!!
Lena says
so that is how to get your super blended, amazeballs eye looks. i will have to try this sometimes. i will probably need a whole hour to do this but if i can get half the look that you got, it’d be worth it.
Cindy says
you crack me up! I swear. Great tutorial for smokey eyes, I have small eyes so I love these kinds of tutorials.

Hello, i’m a french girl so my english isn’t very well but i love your makeup. It is simple and glamour too.
I’m in love of your tee-shirt.. What is the brand of this? Thanks you 🙂

your sound and the way you say things is sooo cute..I was enjoying the way you “sang” rather than looking what you did… 😀
futuralon says
I appreciate the video but the thing that struck me the most was how long it was and how long you must be spending on your look. A blended brown eyeshadow is also my go-to look for daytime (if I wear makeup) and… I see you blending, and blending, and blending. I do my best but I can tell if something looks bad on me, it’s because I didn’t blend enough. This proves it. You look good because you blend. I am also astonished by the number of products you use (makeup and brushes). I acknowledge that you look perfect afterwards, but there’s no way in hell I’m ever going to use blush, bronzer, and highlighter on a normal day. I am not that glamorous I guess. Don’t get me wrong Karen, your beauty blog is my favorite. You’re relatable, you live in the bay (I used to), you have brown hair and eyes like me. But this video was a real eye opener. I will never be glamorous during the day if this performance indicates what it takes… cause I don’t got it.
hanna says
I love the video!

Hi Karen – just wanted to say how much I loved your tutorial. I have tried, unsuccessfully the smokey eyed look and ended up looking like I had done a couple of rounds with Mike Tyson! I’m looking forward to trying this one and the effect looks beautiful on you.
